"Tikkie" is also a word used as a word you say when you tag someone playing the game "tag", in that sense its quite funny cause when your sending a "tikkie" request to someone your essentially tagging him to pay you money 😂

Something about the language topic; my mother is 71 and was never good at english as far as we knew. There were many words she didn't know and her accent was very thick. Then we went on holiday in Britain and she was suddenly fluent when she had no choice but to talk with someone there and lost her accent. Turns out she had been faking being bad at english all this time just to get the kids to do all of the translating.
Back in the netherlands she's pretending to be bad at english again as if I'd just forget about what I witnessed in GB.

The dude tjat says Dutch dont speak English that well... Pure anecdotal, and not based on numbers. The Dutch are the best non-native, second language English speakers. I think this should be clear and other countries should try harder to make this a priority too. It just makes globalization that much easier and more efficient. Yes, all you French, Germans and Russians - you especially.

I think maybe he's saying that because there are a lot of older Dutch people who have a bad accent (at least, compared to the younger people who grow up hearing English every day on tv/youtube). There's quite a difference between how good my English is compared to my father, for instance.
And from an outside perspective, I think there's also kind of an uncanny valley problem, in that the typical Dutch accent is both too similar and still too different at the same time, and it just makes me cringe to hear it. Whereas for example a French or Italian accent is very clearly it's own thing, the Dutch accent is close enough that it's more annoying to hear the differences, maybe...

I myself don't really help fight the stereotype of Dutch people and there weed related endeavours but I feel that the people who smoke a lot get into it because they like it, not because it's cool and edgy.

About the rudeness thing: I for example hate it when people waste my time by beating around the bush. Just tell me what you want straight away. Doesn't matter how you wrap your message, it's about the content. Don't be afraid to step on toes, but don't do it intentionally. My politeness towards others would be: striving to not waste more of their time then strictly necessary.
About the bike thing: if you come here you'll be handicapped without one. No parking anywhere near where you want to be/very expensive parking fees. But bike parking everywhere and anywhere. City centres are mostly pedestrianised/for bikes. A car would be a nuisance in my daily life. (And I love 💘 cars).

i life near a city(Amersfoort) in small town and i can go there by bike but it would take 45 minutes at least without an electric bike and its exhausting in the summerheat and icecold in the winter, and the public transport is time bonded although the bus comes every 20 min but it would still take 15 minutes to get to the city. Meanwhile with a car and in a 15 minute drive you are there, although fuel prices are going up, probably the bus prices because of that too and the same is with electricity

There are 22 million bikes here and 17 million people. It is common to have at least 3 bikes. A good quality (E-)bike for commuting as most employers provide secure parking facilities for bicycles and a scrappy one for shopping and other local activities. Sometimes also a 'bakfiets' for transporting small kids or large goods. Then for leisure a sporting- and or mountainbike.

I spend a lot of my time in the Netherlands, sailing, shopping and visiting friends. I just love dutch people mainly because of their blunt directness and their attitude.
Very different from Belgian habits whereas Belgians keep much to themselves. It can be because I've got ASD that I prefer this kind of communication. Clear, honest and simple. :D
You can go anywhere in The Netherlands and start a conversation about anything. If you have troubles with fi public transportation or finding your way around a city, they are the most helpful!
And what the drug stereotype concerns is not an issue at all. Yeah, I smoke some pot from time to time(maybe 3 or 4 times per year) just to relax while watching a funny movie with some snacks ;)

Dutch guy here about the whole going Dutch thing. Yes, when you go out and spend some money here, almost everybody expects that everybody pays for their own meals/entrance/whatever. I don't do that with closer friends though. Then it's more like, you pay sometimes, the other times the other friend pays. I do think that's uncommon here though.
Ooh and the whole Dutch smoke weed all the time: Those answers really depend on who you ask to be on your show. A lot of Dutch people smoke weed all day long, but I don't know how that compares to other countries.
I'm glad I don't have a bike anymore. I'd rather walk or take the car if it's more than 5 minutes walking. Also, I think cops can get you a sort of DUI if they think you are too drunk to ride your bike (as you are on a vehicle participating in traffic). Never heard of that happening though.
Oh and older people tend to not know English well. Like 60+. The rest just have a ridiculous accent.

71,5 % of dutch native speakers speak english as a second language fluently, which makes us best non native english speaking coutry.
Our accademic english skills are actually rated higher (on avagare) than those of some native english countries, including amusingly enough, the united states of america, though not by much.

Yea the thing with weed in the Netherlands is that we don't really have the naughty vibe to it. It's normal to smell weed nobody bats an eye some people like the smell a bit less than others perhaps but whatever. It's something you do at home or in your backyard on a nice day have a drink with it or some shit but it's really casual because we've grown up with it being normal. I'd say it's a bit like whiskey, if you like it you do it and you'll just have a nice time with it for a bit and move on with your day.

I live in Amsterdam and call tell you that what the guys said about the smoking thing is definitely true: you try it maybe a couple of times when you're a teenager, because it's cool (or you think it's cool) and then by the time you're 17-ish, you're just like...meh. 90% of the people you find in coffee shops are actually tourists.

Texans are also pretty direct upfront and blunt compared to the american average, at least in my experience, and generally the US bar some specific cities is pretty blunt, the juxtaposition is especially there with asians and south europeans, the caucasian part of north america are decendant from north western europeans so we share a lot of evolutionary traits such as directness styles of organisation and to some extend preferences

Tikkie is basically a payment request app, where you can pay each other really easily, this way one person can advance the payment in the restaurant to speed things up, and then we split the bill up afterwards.
But most dutch banking apps have something simmilair build in these days anyways so i don't use tikkie,.
