The thing is when you lower down in chaturanga and you bend your elbows as you lower down your shoulders have to move. So if you keep pushing your shoulder blades apart as you lower the heads of the shoulder blades will start to point downward which is unhealthy for your shoulders. If you let the shoulder blades come closer to each other, the heads of the shoulder blades will stay more lifted and not round forward as much. So I feel like it is safer to let the shoulder blades move closer together while still keeping strong action pushing the floor away and engaging the shoulders. I have filmed myself lowering down trying to keep the shoulder blades apart and seeing the head of the shoulder start to drop forward and down compared to letting the shoulder blades come closer together as you lower so the heads of the shoulders stay lifted. It seems there is a lot of controversy about this.
Hi Gayle, thanks for your comment. I agree, for a healthy chaturanga or push up, the shoulders do need to retract when lowering down. I like to sometimes teach a 1/2 chaturanga where we focus on scapular stability by keeping them apart and only bending the elbows slightly so you're not going very far at all into the pose. But doing the full pose, you need to get those shoulder blades to move together. So yes, you are correct :)
All of the movements in this lesson are helpful even if you don't ever do Chaturanga pose. Try them out and share in the comments which movement was your favourite!
