    Agree that something needs to be done to alter rookie compensation for rbs. Its just a reality that rbs have short careers, so its hard to pay them a lot on a 2nd deal. But its kind of a fucked situation because its bad to pay rbs a lot on a 2nd deal, but then theres also a narrative that you shouldn’t spend top draft picks on rbs, so they miss out on more lucrative rookie deals as well. They’re getting devalued at every end of the spectrum

      I disagree. Due to how contracts are completed it makes ABSOLUTE sense for a franchise to draft a running back high (especially in round 1) keep them for 5 years (4+1 player option) and then franchise tag them and let them walk. At this point you'll have gotten 6-7 prime years of a talented running backs career. Easy. And it sucks cause there's no longevity.

    It's not about hate, offenses are changing to be pass heavy so defenses are becoming more focused on stopping the pass. Which in turn means you can get adequate performance out of less talented RBs, you don't need highly talented (thus more rare) RBs anymore.
    When I was younger nose tackle was more important than edge, fullback was still a critical position and RB was almost on the same level as QB. None of this is true anymore though. Games are not won and lost based on short yardage, the battle in the trenches. Now it's all about long passes and stopping long passes. Fullback has disappeared and nose tackle and RB have become secondary concerns.

    • @flyingblind5677
      @flyingblind5677 Рік тому +14

      Definitely true, but we have already seen teams start going against the grain and back to focusing on short yardage, like the eagles. Except the eagles have done it with the QB run. It’s fun to watch the sport evolve

    • @hunteranfinsen6655
      @hunteranfinsen6655 Рік тому +8

      I agree with most of this but I would disagree in the sense that it is now starting to turn back to a good running attack wins games. With teams like KC being able to score with 13 seconds left it is now putting a very big emphasis on ball control for the opposite offense. The game will never go fully back to what it was but I believe it’s going to get more balanced with some teams choosing to have a run heavy approach in order to counter teams that prepare against the pass and vice versa.
      I actually think it has more to do with how talented a lot of the young guys are, it’s cheaper and easier to just draft a 1st/2nd round RB to be the main ball carrier than it is to sign a vet who has more miles on him and wants more money.

    • @WhiteG60
      @WhiteG60 Рік тому +7

      Agree. It should be QB franchise money, too. If you truly think they're a franchise player, they get paid like a QB. I also think you should be able to designate one player per year to have their salary exempt from the cap. It can't be the same player more than once per contract or never the same player in a row, and the pay the year after can't be more than 20% less than the previous year. That way you can save on some cap casualties, everyone gets paid more, and it's tough to take advantage of it since it cant be the same guy year after year and it also can't be $100M exempt one year and then $5M for the next 5 years for a QB.

    Pretty simple about RBs: Teams love them when they're cheap. They give the good ones the ball 300+ carries a season, wear their butts down to the nub over their rookie deals, and then move on to the next draft pick (that they probably got in the 2nd round at the earliest). Teams are also paying QBs $50 million a year to throw the ball down field, not to hand off. Defenses have to back off receivers more and more as the rules keep changing, which makes passing even more desirable. It's just the way it is right now. Until the rules change again in RBs favor, it will stay that way. Teams don't want bruisers anymore. They want guys that can catch wheel routes and make 8 guys miss on dump offs in the flat. Switch positions and get paid more.

    The way the game has evolved has killed the value of RBs. Now a majority of teams have an RB by committee approach with a few exceptions. In addition to that there’s a constant replenishment at the position each year between the draft and free agency so you don’t have to look very hard to replace one of the three or four your team is likely carrying. It also doesn’t help that most recent instances where an RB gets a big contract it usually results in the team likely regretting it after a couple years.

    The RB market collapse has to do with analytics figuring out that a running backs production is often largely dependent on the blocking around them. On perfectly blocked plays suddenly every running back is a superstar and when the blocking is shit suddenly no running back is worth a damn. There are baselime differences in running back production, it's just that often they are smaller than it appears. It's a tough spot to be in as a player looking for a contract; when you go to find evidence for why you should be paid more and people say actually the evidence says you're not as viable as you think you are and and actually the running game in general isn't as productive as the passing game. The myth around game momentum was just so strong in the past that no one really thought to measure this kind of thing and now the salary market is adjusting.

  • @Mike__B

    Curious what RBs "should" be paid as a number. I mean Zeke got 15M APY in 2019 and 2 of those years overlapped with his rookie 4th & 5th year (since he was a 1st round pick), and people outside of Jerry Jones are pretty universal in saying that was a massive overpay but it was somewhat warranted in that he averaged more than 100 yards per game his first four years (counting receiving yards too), but a year later Derrick Henry got a big contract that was only 12.5M APY and he absolutely was his entire team's offense, but it was probably so low because he only had one really good season prior to his extension and then he absolutely continued to go off. Then you got guys like McCaffrey who got 16M APY which technically kicks in this year but 49ers are only paying 12M APY (less due to a restructure too) as that contract included signing bonus that stuck with Carolina, Kamara like Zeke was 15M, then you drop down to the 12M range with guys like Cook, Henry, Chubb, Mixon & Jones, then Barkley at 10M which is the franchise number. So what is that number that they should be paid? Same as McCaffrey @ 16M? More because unlike McCaffrey Barkley is most of that offense. Are they trying to push like WRs did a couple years ago and get 20M?

    I think the problem with Running Backs ultimately is how prolific the passing game has gotten, a good quarterback can give at least like 250-275 yards if not 300 yards consistently in a game, a running back would have to have a record breaking day to match that and even the best running backs can’t break records every single game. This and the fact that coaches have been getting more creative with blocking schemes and then you thrown in the short amount of time you get with a runningback, teams would rather draft a running back, run them hard during their rookie contract then repeat because they want to save the money for a potential franchise quarterback. You consider just how much much money a franchise quarterback will run you in the current market once their rookie contract is up, there just isn’t cap space to spare for many other positions they have to skim somewhere and unfortunately the running backs are the ones who are getting skimmed.

    There is a salary cap. How many of you would denote 15m+ a year on an RB ... or would you spend that cap space on 1-2 pro-bowl caliber OLs that make holes for cheaper, younger, fresh leg RBs while also providing your QB better protection in a pass-happy league? It's not like the reasons why it's happening don't make a ton of sense.

    When it comes to RBs they tend to do there best work on their rookie deals and most start to fall off right before or after their wondow for their second contract. Every now and then there are exceptions, like Adrian Peterson, but the NFL has seen tomany instances of Ezekiel Elliots and Leveon Bell paid to much and dont produce compared to cheaper options. NFL football is both a sport and a buiness and most teams want to be their best while being fincially safe. To that end certain positions suffer for how much they want, versus how much their talents are worth and if there are cheaper options available. At the end of the day it is what it is.

    Because when a running back is done with their 4/5 year rookie contract they are worn down from so many hits and injuries. Most teams that have paid their running backs have regretted it (ex. Zeke Elliott). This era of football is more about the star qb passing game so if you are a running back you either have to be a generational talent with minimal injury history or great at catching if you want the money.

    • @crater044

      You know what helps a star passing game? A RB taking a lot of focus off of the passing game and opening it up.
      I'm sorry but this is bullshit criteria. This has only been a popular opinion in the last 5 years because analytics deemed the RB position obsolete. The problem is that it doesn't factor in what having a game changing RB does for your team. You can't just replicate that with an average cheap RB with a decent O-Line.
      I'm not saying RBs need to be paid QB money or anything......but Lamar Jackson has 1 playoff win and look at the fat contract he got......Kyler Murray hasn't won a playoff game and he got a fat contract.
      Maybe instead of overpaying overrated QBs.......you actually pay RBs because whether people like it or not, RBs are still productive into their 30s as long as you don't go too ridiculous with their contract.
      And I'm sorry but that Zeke contract was blown out of proportion by fans everywhere. It certainly never hindered the Cowboys because they always had talent at multiple positions and it didn't stop them from throwing the bank at Dak.

    If you want to run him 25-30 times a game, you better pay up.

As the NFL got more popular, they made more money and wanted to grow the league's popularity. .So rules were changed over time to open up the passing game even more. This made games more exciting to the casual viewer, look at the Rams/Chiefs scorefest from a few years ago. Does anyone really think a game like that would have been possible in Lombardi's time? Now running backs are niche players. You have the occasional exception like Henry, but RB is no longer the engine that powers the offense. Since Frank Gore, the 49ers have not been able to start the same RB two seasons in a row due to injuries. Christian McCaffery did great last year, but will he be healthy next year? That hasn't been the case for the 49ers for the past several years. It's pointless to pay a ridiculous amount of money to a player who has a very high probability of not being able to play a full season, or maybe not at all. That being said, the 49ers seem to be able to plug in any different running back each year and still get good results.

    NFL RB pay works the same way as any other job. It’s a combination of supply, demand, and value added.
    They get what they are worth, same as any other worker. I’m not shedding any tears for them.

    Kids are going to stop playing that position, and then it’s going to change.

    It sucks because of supply and demand of running backs there’s only so many starting jobs and each running backs being drafted sometimes better then the last class. So why invest in a player when they’re production can be easily replaced for millions less. Then the money you would’ve payed a veteran running back could go to a long term superstar.

    I find it funny when football players demand more money. My guy you’re a guaranteed millionaire no matter what. That’s way more than the vast majority of people will ever be within sniffing distance of in their entire lives. Take a team friendly deal and let your front office put together a Super Bowl roster
