I bought a P2 Volvo XC90 for Overlanding and Here's Why

  • Most people wouldn't dare buy an AWD vehicle to go off roading. I bought my 2010 Volvo XC90 V8 just for that reason!! It does almost everything I need, and I think it'll be better at off road trails once I lift it and put All Terrains on it! I can't wait for all the adventures to come.

    I’ve gotten a few questions about the 2.9 T6 & 2.5T. I definitely wouldn’t trust that 4 Speed GM Transmission in the T6 for anything that’s not the road 😂. The 2.5T engine & transmission are a decent pair!! Same powertrain in the P2 XC70. If I wasn’t driving a V8 XC90, I’d say I’d probably rocking a 2.5T over a 3.2
Edit: I also forgot to mention that the XC90 can ford up to 16 inches of water stock. Read my owners manual!

I agree on the T6, it should be avoided for the XC90. The GM transmission just isn't robust enough to handle the power of the engine and early failures are common. It's not as bad in the S80 T6 due to the lighter weight, but the XC90 really puts the GM transmission to work. I have no experience with the XC90 T6 (we have a 2.5T) but I do have a 2000 S80 T6 with the GM transmission. Oddly enough, it has 270,000 miles with the original transmission and it runs like new. So your miles may vary haha.

I have had a lot of experience with both 3.2L and whiteblocks. I have to say the 3.2L I believe is better. About the same power, but better fuel economy and much better ease of service. PCV system and timing belt are basically non-issues on the 3.2L.

    Hi from France ;)
Well done for this comprehensive and informative video. And I can't agree more about the lack of official or aftermarket offroading upgrades for XCs. So much vulnerable parts under there.... Sad example : the HALDEX connector is right at the lowest part of overall ground clearance ^^'
Too bad because it's indeed a somewhat capable offroader, it's so automated that you barely notice any difficulty or lack of traction. It just do it's thing and it goes. It works and feel safe in the way it works.
Comfort is also completely at the top of the automotive world, especially in an Executive like yours.

This is great video, well made and providing lots of information I needed! I'm searching for 3-row SUV which would be nearly impervious to heavy snow, but still comfortable for ultra long road trips. I have ignored XC90s because, well, they're Volvos and I always considered the AWD system being just for show. I live in a wrong continent because we don't get Pilots, Highlanders or Ascents here, the Mk1 XC90 woud at least offer a nice petrol engine (I'm eyeing 2.5T, because price of diesel fuel has exploded sky high here recently) at reasonably budget price. Just need to get past the dreary interior, LOL!

Good video Bern! Well, you might know my story, I use to drive a FJ cruiser, then a Subaru. I didn’t want to go back to a truck but wanted an AWD on the more capable side. The New midsized Hondas are pretty dang amazing. Was the first of the newer breed of twin clutch rear differential AWD. 20.4:1 crawl ratio. The V6 VW Atlas and Jeep Renegade/compass trailhawk are at 20:1 as well. The new Honda 10 speed is geared 22:1. Honda ain’t messing around with crawl ratio anymore.
The 1st Gen Touareg is a really good option. So beastly! I think it’s even triple locked

You have inspired me. My wife is giving me her old 2013 as a project car and I am considering doing this. We are going full electric for the next car but it would be nice to have something like this in case we need gas or I want to fill it up with Home Depot crap And still get through the snow. The car will be worth almost nothing on trade in at least compared to the value that I see in it as a third car. And it will be a good car for my son for his first car. Big, safe and slow. I have a 3.2
