Ok so I am a nuclear professional 43 years and still working. My profession has primarily been in radiation protection. All things radiation protection. Situations and conditions of my experiences include processing nuclear weapon source materials. And spent nuclear fuels from breeding reactors to commercial. All these positions deal with far higher dose than the aftermath of a detonation. I say this because you would be dead from the nuclear event otherwise. The only 2 events of record in Japan do not represent today's nuclear weapons. Health Physics is the science of radiation protection. A field born out of WWII and nuclear science. We do know what exposure does to all parts of the human body and unborn. We have training for wearing protective clothing and what is needed. Time , distance and shielding isn't well explained. The kinds of modern nuclear weapons are more threatening and bring 6 physical threats. I have long realized the public is unprepared. We abandoned civil defense training and nothing is updated.
Question: For my Emergency Decon Plan - I’m looking at an Airex Air Shower step 1, then a mist shower step 2 fully clothed, then disrobe, throw clothes in designated washing machine, than take a shower. Leave room with a sealed door. How does this sound?
@@Roastar2 i buy Kirkland baby wipes by the case. I would buy a lot of their leaf bags and kitchen trash bags. Drop your shoes outside. Step inside the largest bag. Clean your hands with wipes. Place those is its own zip lock. If you have latex gloves put a pair on. Then carefully wipe your face. Eyes and mouth or entry points inside the body. Wipe carefully there and pull wipe away from and fold it before wiping again. Clean spot only touching. You can use the wipes to clean exposed skin, hair, arms. Wipe and fold and go in an away direction. I recommend working over a trash bag and put wipes inside as ziplock. There is a roll method of removing clothing. Consider your gloves or hands. Clothing protects skin but outside has greatest likelihood of being contaminated. So clean hands and roll from inside clothes outward. Put those inside a laundry bag. Then go shower with water rinsing from head down. Non abrasive washing and soaps normal ones. Separate bath towels in a separate laundry bag. I would wash those in washer. But until you know via a rad meter, let the other outside clothes decay off. Please date with time and seal up bags. Just set them aside. Put air dry if wet. No need to assume contamination or not. Its a question unless you can survey the clothes.
@@Roastar2 I am well trained for personnel decon. Familiar with full scale whole body contamination from process of decon to facility design and water management. Tempid water on shower so pores are not opened or closed. Rinsing an open wound is more important than worrying on contamination going down a drain. We capture that water and manage it. Emergency at home and it matters to you conside making a lined sand trap with overhead shower with a pull switch. Put a wood hand made grate over sand pit or metal if you have something. Sand is a great water filter. Pond liners can be bought. Off grid project book could have the water tank/shower setups to follow. I know I have one. But after a nuclear event modern designs will have less fallout. But not having surveyed following such an event I will be cautious myself until I know. I have an emergency rad kit personally owned. I have to know what it happening and changes as it migrates in atmosphere and short halflife isotopes decay off.

Don’t forget that a basement can flood very quickly if the sump pump is not working due to loss of power. So either prepare with a battery back up or some sort of manual pump to remove water in the event of heavy rains. Thanks for the video guys.

This video is, as usual, a timely reminder. I was able to find potassium iodide (KI) in a 2 bottle set at WalMart, oddly enough, for a not-crazy price. I expect to see a small nuclear "solution" used in the Ukraine conflict any day now. I continue to top off the preps as efficiently as possible.
What section of the store is it in ?
Ann, IF there is a small tactical nuke being used, please, do yourself a favor and do NOT use the potassium. By the time it has circled the planet and reaches you it will have degraded so much.
By the way, you need K2, not K1. The key is not to get exposed to nuclear dust. Make sure you have plenty of food and water to be able to stay inside for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Can you provide a link to the potassium iodine from Walmart you purchased. Not sure which is the right stuff so many come up when I search

I have degrees in chemistry and biology, and I am new to prepping. This video was the MOST informative I have found on UA-cam! Thank you for Mr. Whimpey taking the time to explain everything.
It never ceases to amuse me, how people feel the need to declare their DEGREES, as if that means anything.
This was very informative but unfotunately did nothing to change my plan of running towards the blast. I live on the east coast surrounded by 1st and 2nd strike targets. At least a couple of which are within ten miles. My wife and I along with our grown daughter have discussed this and all agree that even though we might possibly escape the blast and heat wave we would rather die quickly than go through a lingering painfull death a couple of months later of radiation poisoning. However, I wish the rest of you good luck and you are welcome to stop by my place and help yourselves to what ever supplies are left in the crushed and smoldering ruins of my home...

Even at that distance if you have a cellar, cover the windows with dirt 2-3 ft deep. Along with sealing your doorway down low & filtering the upper part with say vacume cleaner bag which allows oxygen flow but filters out radioactive dust. You'll survive. Yes you'll need water & some food along with a bucket & plastic bags. You'll be ok for 2-3 weeks.
Even if you don't have a cellar you can shelter inside, building up a shield with as much mass as you can. A mattress on the ground with a kitchen table stacked with another mattress, books, clothing, anything else. Use tape first then towels around the base of doors. Use tape around all doors & windows initially allowing only filtered air in through one doorway.
You can survive this. You'll oy need to shelter for 2-3 weeks. Please don't give up.

Assuming we could bunker in long enough ( did anyone else notice the everytime Jay mentioned the required bunker in time it got longer, ending in 2 months?) I'm liable to be facing fallout from multiple warheads. Exposure to that accumulation even after the bunker in time will be hard to avoid, resulting in a long slow painfull death. Not pnly my own but also having to watch my loved ones going through the same agony, no thanks. If I get to choose my cause of death, I'll take a fast one thank you very much. In addition Jay mentions nothing about the nuclear winter that will engulf the planet during which crops will fail and livestock die off resulting in worldwide starvation, again ,no thanks. No one can prep for that...
A few quick notes about taking iodine (potassium iodide, KI for short) against radiation poisoning:
-Do not "wing it" when it comes to dosage because KI will mess up your body if you don't know what you're doing. Age etc. affects dosage, and this is tricky because the dosages needed to combat radiation poisoning are huge, so there isn't as much margin for error as you might think. This isn't like your average supplement.
-Do not take KI intended to combat radiation poisoning as a regular supplement or "just in case" because it is a different product from the iodine intended for use as a regular supplement. Only take it if the nukes really do start landing and take it only as instructed. The KI intended to combat radiation is about a thousand times stronger than the KI you find it multivitamins and vegan iodine products. The latter two are NOT fit for purpose (if your purpose is to combat radiation poisoning).
-There are limits to who should use KI and how much it can help. It only protects the thyroid from radioactive iodine (I-131) and does not protect other parts of the body from other types of radiation. It's not some magic pill, so use it only as one of many ways to protect yourself and your family from radiation poisoning.
-KI is usually recommended only for people under 40 years old as well as for women who are pregnant/breastfeeding. Doses recommended by the FDA depend on age, so make sure you check and double and triple check the correct dosage for each person under your care.
-One last time and I cannot stress this enough: KI can seriously mess you up if taken incorrectly. If you are instructed to take KI, only use KI products that are approved for the intended purpose of combating radiation.

I often think of how to quickly turn off the HVAC. Those noisy big things outside with the fan blades. Great video with an important action item - shielding to pile up at the basement walkout and windows. This is a long but much appreciated, informative video. Thank you.
The thing outside with the fan blades is just moving air across the coil, it’s not bringing air in or out of your house. Most homes don’t have outside air ducted into them unless they are pretty new and tightly sealed. In that case they typically use an energy recovery ventilator.
I won't be an issue bc the emp from the detonation will kill the power.

The fan blades and the fan on a HVAC unit on the outside are not connected directly to the inside that's just to cool the outside condenser

When I was a teenager in the 1960s, I took training in fallout shelter management, emergency medical care, radiation monitoring, etc. offered by our local Civil Defense agency. Classes were taught in a big fallout shelter in the sub-basement of our courthouse. It was stocked with everything imaginable - even a small infirmary. But in the intervening years, our government stopped preparing Americans for nuclear attack. Shelters were stripped of equipment and supplies and turned to other uses. I don't think most people would recognize the siren warning for such attacks (the warble is different from the tornado warning). I see no fallout shelter signs posted in my town. I live in the capitol of my state. The former Air Force base here was once a prime target because it had very long runways, so it still might be a target. There were many missile sites scattered across my state. I don't know which are still active, but assume some are. All that leads me to believe it is likely my city would be targeted. Frankly, like another person posted here, I don't think I'd want to survive in a shelter and then come out to face what was left of our world.

For combating cabin fever, get mood enhancing herbs and supplements. St. John's wart, chamomile, phosphatydle serine, melatonin and others. Have coloring supplies, books, whatever for keeping busy.
Fallout that is the size of sand or small gravel looks like little glass beads of weird irregular shape. It is basically melted glass, so it looks brown if from brown dirt, reddish if from red dirt. Fallout can later be in the form of tiny tiny invisible nanoparticles, so special air filters or masks are needed to keep from breathing nanoparticles into your lungs.

We learned about radiation early as some schools in our area closed during a nuclear accident from the Atomic Energy Commission in Idaho. I was in second grade. By third grade we were issued dog tags which was required for every school day due to the Cuban crisis. We had drills which put us sitting below our lockers with our heads down. It was a serious time but we we're young enough to think it was a fun break from classwork. If we forgot our dog tags our parents had to bring them to school. Shower twice if exposed and wash hair three times. A slight acid body wash such as orange juice is optimal if contaminated. My sister told me this after being trained to handle radiation accidents at the INEL as a paramedic. Don't use cream rinse in your hair as it hangs on to radiation. Applesauce was given to children exposed after Chernobyl I read. I would have enough for a month or two.

🙏🙏🙏Thank you for all the information. No one can guarantee survival but being prepared with the knowledge available is the wisest thing to do. The radiation sickness would be horrible and I'm anxious to do everything we can to minimize the exposure. We would hunker down in the basement and will get busy putting our stacks of storage bins along outside walls to help shield. Glad to know the stored canned goods will be safe to eat and will have our water filtering available. Can't have enough water but will store as much as possible down there. We have buckets and port-a-potty with bags for sanitation and will set up a washing, hand sanitizing station and have large wet wipes. Food will probably not be heated up because even indoor safe cooking methods won't be ideal in such a non-ventilated space. Have hand can openers etc for opening food. Actually, setting up the basement area as a campsite with everything you need ahead of time would be best. With food, water, utensils, sanitation items to use and store waste (garbage cans with tight lids for waste bags), sleeping bags/cots & pillows, blankets, cards, games, battery fans & lights and lots of batteries, transistor radio, mild air fresheners, coolers with frozen water bottles, meds, otc meds, first aid, etc. I guess your regular preps need to be stored where you could also hunker down for other events. Although not everything in basement in case of flooding. Wow, so much to think about but thinking ahead will be what helps us later. 🙏🙏🙏
You can connect your drying machine vent with a squirrel cage coming from a car fan and driven by hand or from a bicycle. You would have air replacement and you could cook near the cage. To have fresh air in your basement bunker, use the attic (slow moving air) get pipes up-there and connect to the basement, use large air entry with screens (you don't want tons of flies), same fan car vent system to get the air coming down.

Thank you for all the great info. But even more than the nuclear blast, I am more afraid of what survivors will do after society has collapsed following an all out nuclear war.

The blast wave lasts about 3 seconds. There is next maybe a second of calm, then comes three seconds (approximately) of vacuum sucking backwards the other way. The vacuum wave can be worse than the original blast wave, so buildings get pushed north then sucked south.
If you're close enough to experience atmospheric shift caused by the blast you won't survive, they say you want to be far enough away that you can barely see the mushroom cloud, if you're any closer you risk radiation poisoning

Interesting topic, and I hope the follow-up videos address the following logistics:
- How could you constantly stay in the pictured 15 sq ft basement lean-to for 2 weeks or more? How would you go about everyday needs? Is it just about minimizing the time you go outside to cook on a gas stove, fuel a generator, or use a latrine?
- If summer, and you have a generator to keep fridges/freezers running a few hours a day, do you just minimize your time outside and decontaminate each time you come back inside?
- If winter, is there a point to turning off your furnace (assuming gas/power is available) or avoiding the draft of a wood stove, both of which pull in combustion air into the home from outside? Or do our houses leak so much air anyways to make those precautions worthless?

You CAN NOT GO OUTSIDE WHATSOEVER., for days, weeks or a month or two. According to what they said you need to live in an inner room of your house, basement or bomb shelter for this peroid. Im going to store ready food in 5 galon buckets in my master closet with food, water, radio, batteries, lights etc. Then use the buckets for toilet and waste. It would be horible, i have a 4yr old on top of it
I think you turn furnace off to prevent circulation of fallout and conserve the oxygen.

You can get a toilet seat for a5 gallon bucket. Line it with a garbage bag and if you have it cat litter
Remember Japan, at those targeted cities people survived and where totally unprepared (luck). There is the chance that depending on the type of device used very little or no radiation or fallout will be present where you are. There will not be any electricity and very little working electrical stuff. Think like you just started living an Amish lifestyle. Prepare accordingly.
Who would want to live in a post apocalyptic civilization?. Water alone you need 1 gallon a day, and if you build a sand bag shelter, for even 1 person would have to be huge? 4 sand bags deep all around and roof. I don't see many left after a year.

It is quite simple. There is no post apocalyptic world because there will be no apocalypse. There will be challenges, people will die,... But the earth will continue to rotate. Farmers will harvest, people will get children.

nope, basically you're just prolonging your death a little bit. Everything on the surface will have radiation particles and will eventually die.
@@hannahhepworth1401 Don't Panic. Yes, animals will be alive, just as most people will; unless you are within about 5 miles of the blast and very unlucky.

If there was a nuclear accident or terrorist attack...
1. Have duct tape on hand and seal all doors and windows. Roll of plastic for double up protection.
2. Maintain a supply of food and clean, sealed water. Purification system
3. Drink beer. half kidding and half not. The beer can flush bad things from your system.
4. If indoors, stay indoors. If outdoors, get indoors. If exposed, gently shower with soap, but be sure not to break the skin by rubbing too hard.
5. Maintain a supply of Potassium Iodide Tablets, which can protect your thyroid from radiation. If you don't have them, iodized table salt is better than nothing, but better to have the tablets. Last many years beyond the expiration date. Good to have if shtf.
I have been studying this for quite a few years now. The shielding from the gamma rays. Food water, dirt, books, bricks. . This world is going crazy now.
Two years ago, my friend and I put together a Chinese-made portable trencher I purchased from a tool catalog. I tell people it's for digging out stumps and that's true. What I don't tell people is it also could be used to dig an "L"-shaped trench in my back yard, a slit trench, that when properly covered, may be used for fallout protection. Lord willing, my trencher won't be used for that purpose. For now, it just sits waiting for the next stump challenge. The biggest one we got out of neighbor's yard this summer was a white oak, with an age of 123.
Could you post a picture of it or where to get one if that's even possible now.
Might want to dig that trench now and be ready. Waiting until launch is not the time to 'try' something new.
Maybe make a dual purpose root cellar/ fallout shelter? You won't regret that...
Swimming pools. Indoor, municipal pools, that is...
1. Usually have a roof high above them giving you distance
2. Source of drinking water
3. Often have basements where the equipment is that get you even further underneath
Commercial buildings. Think creatively, anything more than one story should be an option, as long as you can bring food and water.
1. Malls
2. Some churches
3. Sporting good stores
4. Grocery stores. This has the added advantage of having food and water, assuming people aren't rushing it to loot it.
5. Jiffy lube type places. They usually have a tall roof and the pits in the floor give you more protection.
6. Any multi-story business is a candidate. Many people will not be thinking of these as shelter.
Creative options:
1. Parking garages underneath buildings. This is a real hit/miss thing depending on how much air flow. Too much and that dust will get in.
2. Tunnels. Again, airflow and dust but if you are in a car and have no other option...

I just remembered, after the Fukushima accident in Japan, radiation material was found in cows grazing in the USA, then in their milk. Man, it's a small world. ETA: this was in the mainland, not just Hawaii.
Some critical issues:
1. The area you are sheltering needs to near air tight as dust & contaminated smoke would cause a problem. Ideally shelters need to have an air-filtration system & maintain a positive air pressure inside to prevent dust & smoke from getting inside your shelter
2. Nuclear power plants are a major problem, as they will likely meltdown and release radioactive fallout for months, if not for years. After a nuclear war, there will be no one coming to contain & clean up a nuclear power plant meltdown. They continue to release fresh fissile materials for years, as well as long duration radioactive isotopes.
3. Issue is that rebuilding isn't going to be that easy. Most of the items we use come from thousands of miles away. I don't see how fuel will be readily available to support the food supply chain. Consider that farms use a lot of diesel to plant, harvest, process, & transport & it will be nearly impossible for AG equipment to get resupplies of consumables, & replacement parts.
4. We really don't know what biological weapons will be deployed, as these could be far deadlier that nuclear weapons.
I recommend watching the 1983 move "Threads" (Available on YT) which does show how society will live on after a nuclear war. At best the first year, AG equipment would be able to do some of the farming worth by using locally available fuel & salvaging parts. But Once the local fuel is gone, It will likely be all manual labor. Food will need to be sourced locally since its unlikely there will be any means to transport food over long distances. A drought, early\late frosts could trigger a famine. Also not sure about seed production as most farms rely on non-heirloom seeds. Seeds reused from hybrid plants usually do not grow well and are less tolerate to the environment (ie bad weather, bugs, disease) & usually have a significant reduction in crop yields.
Post Nuclear war Society would likely resemble medieval times with most of the population living in abject poverty and short lifespans (from rising cancer cause by contamination - no just radiation, but from chemical contamination from destroyed industrial plants and burning plastics from urban regions) as well as the loss of access to modern living standards: Clean water, high grade foods, access to healthcare, etc). My guess Post War, the median lifespan falls back to at least the 19th century level , which most people died before they reached 40.
That movie was so scary! But I highly recommend it as well.

You asked what our plans were: I purchased a nuclear hardened missile silo. As a life long student of survival, I highly recommend everyone get a copy of the Nuclear War Survival Skills book and a calibrated Victoreen 717 radiation detector. KI4U has calibrated ones, dosimeters and hard copies of the Nuclear War Survival Skills book. We have insurance for everything else. Why not disaster preparedness, too? That and my faith in God is my disaster insurance!

Thanks so much for sharing this information. In your follow up video, some questions that I'm left with are when to use iodide tablets or liquid and should I cover vents and try to create a sealed space in my home using sheathing and tape. I will look to see if these are addressed in the survival guide you provided, which I'm sure will be incredibly helpful. Thanks again so much for sharing it!

I was excited to watch this video, but was disappointed in the presentation. Mr. Whimpey obviously knew his stuff, but had a difficult time "dumbing it down" to where it was usable information for the average person. Kylene's take-aways were wonderful. I just gave my daughter some more iosat yesterday because she moved recently and didn't know where they were when I asked her if she remembered what I told her to do if something like that happens.

If they tend to be forgetful you can get those little capsules for medicine that attach to your keys. I always carry aspirins in mine. (I've had experience with heart attack victims & you'd be surprised what difference a couple of asprin placed under the tongue can make to a positive outcome)
I bought my family liquid Povidone Iodide when north Korea was playing up couple years ago. Yes they think I'm nuts but who cares! They will thank us later. As well as apologies. 😂

in Hawaii most people did not panic, what they did do was say goodbye to their families and a lot of them were outside looking at the sky, waiting for the bombs to fall. No one knew what to do. The worst panic was mothers the children were at school. We knew if it came from Korea, but they did not say where the bombs were coming from we had fifteen minutes before impact. It will be time although zero of us will ever forget it. We were asking neighbors what can you do?? everyone thought that there was zero you can do and you were dead. This is not true. Another great book is a history book by a doctor who lived through strike zero, it will tell you how these people who made it what it was like. Called Hiroshima Diary was written by a doctor and it was noted at that time they had no idea what hit them. Noted in Japan both bombs seventy-five percent of the people lived. Wind direction also makes difference in who gets hit and who does not.
I had neighbors who got the lawn chairs out and sat outside looking at the sky. There was an acceptance that this was your final day on earth. The feeling of acceptance was everywhere....I knew me, my children and grandchildren would not make it if we were near the strike zone. Hawaii was bombed in world war two so we know a kind of war that no one on the mainland has lived through. Of course when we found out it was a so-called mistake people were angry beyond belief. Today I have tons of information and research and knowledge on the subject.
I do think there are things to do. Yes I have preps and water. Masks. I have heavy plastic and tape and 2 grown son's. We will do the best we can. No we would not be sitting out in lawn chairs.
The heavy plastic is also to cover ground area outside. Cover gardens etc...it only takes a few minutes to do that.

You would have to decontaminate everything after you come out of your shelter. This also includes the inside of your house, land (top soil) …gamma rays is my concern I’m in FL. No shelters or basements underground. I think the goal would be to survive but then find way to permanently leave to another location that was not exposed to nuclear fallout. Look at Ukraine some of those nuclear disaster areas still are not safe--30 years later.

blackout curtains. . put duct tape onfloor vents ,cover window a/ c units with thick plastic and secure with duct tape . make sure the weather stripping around exterior doors is good . . make.a safe room in your house . and access to your bathroom. . .

Radiation diminishes as the inverse square of the distance. Blast decreases as the inverse cube of the distance. If you are twice as far away, the radiation is one quarter and the blast is one-eighth.

Next time you talk to Jay WhimpeyPE, ask him for me: My friend had to have her Thyroid glands removed, will she be less affected by fallout radiation then you and me? Will she survive longer than us?
You can connect your drying machine vent with a squirrel cage coming from a car fan and driven by hand or from a bicycle. You would have air replacement and you could cook near the cage. To have fresh air in your basement bunker, use the attic (slow moving air) get pipes up-there and connect to the basement, use large air entry with screens (you don't want tons of flies), same fan car vent system to get the air coming down. The slow moving air will not pull air particles in the attic, big air entries will also reduce air speed and the risk of sucking particles. Use the deepest in the earth corner of your basement, reinforce the first level floor if you want to get dirt in the room above your bunker area.
While I like what you are saying, an attic during the day is constantly flowing air through convection. It is likely to have high levels of radiation because of that. I will look into it more, because I hadn't looked into that particular question.
@@rumdog117 It depends. if you have and old house with a few air entry points, then it could be an issue. But if you have vented soffite all around the perimeter of your house, air exchange rate is low and air velocity is also low. If you add large air entries to drop even more air the velocity, then you should be good to go. Worst case scenario would be to add a tube carbon filter(the same type those pot growers like to install to cut the smell of their production).

Simple instruction and good information ...CDC has put out good information, on what to do doing a nuclear emergency. Nuclear event if it is daylight most likely you will not be with family members, this is one event you may be on your own. I know people who carry nuclear kits in their cars to help them survive....here in Hawaii.
A few months ago NYC put out a nuclear Alert system and video to residents and what to do.

I also had an enjoyable interview with Jay Whimpey, some common topics, but we also talked about the state of the US nuclear arsenal and national civil defense.
Survivability of a massive nuclear war including EMP blast is more problematic. EMP'S destroy semi-conductors and create electrical overloads. Meaning the grid is gone with all its transformers but the most possible damage is nuclear meltdows from all the reactors. If safety equipment is depending over the grid or a computer, it will fail. Return to a ''normality'' is not in the cards after a year or two. The new normality will be like living in the year 1800. Another important issue that was overlooked is iodine protection. Iodine is a TRACE ELEMENT. You need about 125 to 140 micrograms (μg) /day. Tablets are at 135mg (milligram). Notice that milligrams are 1000X more than micrograms. That means that the emergency safety pills are too powerfull. Better use SENIOR VITAMINS that have already the correct 125microgram dosage in them. My hypothesis is that the mistake was made during the cold war when FEMA did the protection program for a nuclear war. At that time, US citizens had no clue about the metric system(most have no clue today!!!). And also because typewriter of the time did not have the microgram symbol available (μg), that is probably why milligrams and micrograms were confused since they use an abreviation: mg. Same thing happened with SPINACH and their iron content. A lab tech made a mistake with a point at the wrong place and suddenly spinach was the most potent iron contender of nature. By the time the government react to correct the mistake, POPEYE was already fighting the bad guys and the myth still persist for a lot of people.

Question - What do we do to the windows to prevent effects of the dust? Can we use rain from outside, after an attack , to drink and bathe? Does a Berkey water system filter out the radiation ? How long Is it safe to drive a vehicle home after a radiation attack?
If you are home and Alert to nuclear coming...I would have Rolls of tape and plastic ready. Heavy blankets etc...I have plastic and I plan on taping around the window seals. Hanging plastic after that as well. Also the plastic will cover ground, plant area outside. You pretty much have to hunker inside for atleast a week. I just got 2 NOAA radios from local fire dept. They are electric or battery run and have an antenna. It will keep me in touch with news and government communications. About 30.00 to buy. I have one at my office and one at home
I would not use anything from outside. Have wipes and bottled water inside now. Pet food, and plenty of cat litter or pet pads for dog.

For SOIL PROTECTION of a garden space, this is what I have prepared...
I purchased LARGE TARPS and tied ropes at the 4 corners. This way, I can cover my garden area with the Tarps and lay the ropes outward, with stone on top of the tarps. If Fallout should come to my area, and after things settle down, especially if we get a rain or two... Then I could just grab the extended ROPES and pull the tape away from the protected soil, as a means to prevent fallout materials from covering the whole garden soil. This way, less damage to that portion of land.
I also have already present tarps as well to cover the Hand-dug Water wells too... this way, I would just PITCH TENT it over the area, and after a rain, it would wash away from the well and into the lower downslope ground.... and in time, once fallout is over again, pull the ropes and remove the tarps covering the hand dug water wells.

Ignored the nuclear winter topic that would last a decade making it impossible to grow crops anywhere outdoors. 95-99% of people won't survive the start of the nuclear war to the end of the nuclear winter in my opinion.

1.for those with a walkout basement that has windows or have no basement and sheltering in a ranch house,, do windows or doors need to be covered with plastic?
2. Should any vents on the roof be covered?
3. If we are stuck inside, and assuming grid is down, seems pretty hard to have energy to cook food indoors with windows/ doors having to remain shut so no ventilation. How do we handle this.?

1 & 2, yes plastic sheets are on many preppers' lists for just this reason.
3: You're going to need to use a bucket lined with a trash bag as a makeshift toilet. You'll want several bags for this. You're just going to tie it up and set it in another room. Yes, it's gross but that's survival for you. Other grid down situations allow much better options, but when waiting for radiation to clear you do need to stay inside unfortunately.
As to ventilation, you would need a way to filter outside air before it enters your shelter, and would need a way to remove stale, hot air from your shelter. Check out the instructions in the book Nuclear War Survival Skills on how to build a manual "Kearny Air Pump" for one way to do that :-) With proper ventilation, you could use a butane stove that is rated for indoor use. Even better, try to store foods that don't need to be cooked.

Waste: 5 gal buckets with toilet lid for toilet. Have a large brick or peat moss or pine shaved bedding for small animals. Cover waste with organic material every time bucket is used.
Have several lidded plastic trash bins (no holes) to dump waste into as needed, again, covering with a layer of organic material. If the waste stinks you do not have enough organic material covering it.
Walk out basement: board up glass from the outside with 1” plywood and sandbag over. Repeat same process inside.

QUESTION: I live in windy place in a house with a fairly steeply-pitched roof. Won't radioactive fallout/ dust be likely to slide to the bottom edges (gutters) of my roof and/or blow right away in the wind? Won' this affect the level of protection I have in various parts of my home?

I've heard sunflowers are used to remove radiation from the soil. Also, apple products have helped remove some forms of radiation from the body.
Pectin in apples basically fills glands in your body so that they are full of a chemical. Once they are filled, they don't accept anymore and that keeps the radiation from staying in your body. Just be sure if you go with apple products, they have pectin in it. If not go with potassium iodide which is still available and not to bad on price. We purchased enough for a family of three to be good for 2 months.

Admiral John Aquilano just gave the most grace warning about what we have coming in the near term and what's likely to happen in Ukraine and china. The government stance has changed from we are giving weapons to Ukraine to we are in this together for the long haul. He also warned that the US is not ready to take on china unless we go to a war footing with the country and start making more ships and the associated weapons that come with that build up. Basically we will have to do something close to what we did in WW2 and what we produced. Things are according to him get far worse than better. Think shortages are bad now, think about in the future when they use the banking system to limit what you can buy. There will be limits on fuel and products that will be going to the war effort like very few alive now have ever seen. It would not be crazy to think that this coming war will include limited nuclear strikes. If you don't believe it, that's ok. But it is generally better to be prepared than to need things in the future that won't be available. That includes potassium iodide and or pectin.
A couple things to remember; Carl Sagan made up “nuclear winter” think about all the above ground nuclear testing that went on for years before.
People are currently living and working in Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan. Although devastating, most will survive the initial blast / attack. Fallout has a half-life and doesn’t remain deadly forever, you can survive if you want to.

Big boy and little boy yields are probably more similar to today’s tactical weapons and not strategic weapons as they were used at the time. Using dirt in sacks is also very important for growing food in after an event.
Ideally it's best not to dig around after an event until a good strong storm washes most radioactive material away.
(Keep in mind rainwater will become polluted after an event as dust will fall on the roof & flow with water into your storage tanks.
If you can redirect the flow from your tank before the event would be ideal.
(Remember to cover & seal your tank from fallout)

My plan to prepare is food, ammo, seeds, buying a location naturally protective with water sources and good growing soil. Wild game plentiful. Fishing close by. First aid necessary. Instrumentation buying underway. I am confident in all my skills for detection and decontamination. I am capable of air, water soil etc sampling and determine nuclear presence and measurements as well as assessments for exposures and what those exposures mean to human health. I understand the types of radiation and isotopes found in fissioned source materials. Half life , why intensity of dose drops off and what are the long term exposures.

What is radiation ?
It's basically energy released from atomic nuclei to stabilize it's self or hit the magical number when the atom itself has the perfect ratio of protons,neutrons and ,electrons
Ionizing radiation is the same as radiation its just fancier I guess to say but Ionization is when you strip away electrons from atoms or molecules of such molecules again two or more different types of atoms bounded together by chemical bonds at the molecular scale of observation. Back to the correction
So for example if we had a radioactive source A emitting 1.8 millisieverts/hr
our inital distance from that radioactive source of we double it say we are 2 meters away
and double that
1/d^2
d = 2 m
1/2^2 = 1/4
we would take 1 quarter of the radiation in one hour from the radioactive source.
so 1 quarter of 1.8
1.8/4
you would be taking about
0.45mSv/hr
of course it also depends on where you get the radiation but to be safe assume you're getting a full body dose...
if you're 4 meters away from the radioactive source.

We decreased the radiation with distance by a factor of 4...
Note : Geiger counters tell you where radiation is or not but don't tell you what type and there is many types.
Alpha radiation - Helium atoms with two protons and two neutrons in the nucleus and overall positive charger no electrons. (g)
beta radiation - highly energized electrons negatively charged
gamma radiation - electromagnetic waves high energy light particles known as photons.
Neutron radiation - highly energized neutral charge particle
Fallout radiation - Alpha particles with debris basically and other material lifted up from the dirt if the Nuclear bomb went off in the ground or a ground burst.
X ray radiation a variation of electromagnetic waves
I don't have any interior rooms, what about windows? Would they need to be covered, from the inside or outside, what if you didnt have enough time or the materials to cover them?
If your windows are tight, then they don't need to be covered. The reason for covering with plastic is to stop air from coming in an carrying radioactive dust with it.
I'm just brainstorming here and I'm not sure of the terminology but you know that insulation foam board stuff? I'm wondering if you were to cut those to fit inside of your Windows snugly then taped around with duct tape and plastic if that would help fix leaky window problems? And as far as the warning and time thing, well if you are dead if you don't do anything, then isn't it best to At least try to do something no matter how much time you have? Meaning, tape those Windows up the moment you become aware. No time to worry just do your best. Also if you prepare cutouts for your Windows in advance and have plastic and duct tape on hand then you plug and go. If you have more than one able bodied person to help you then you all do it. First turn off your air conditioner then plug up those windows. Think I might do this myself. Doesn't hurt to try even if it isn't perfect right?

@@fayelinnartz3268Per an article I read in PubMed and other, similar, articles, apple pectin powder was reportedly used successfully to reduce the amount of 137Cs (radioactive Cesium) in children who had eaten contaminated food following the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. The apple pectin apparently binds with the radioactive Cesium isotope and then both the pectin and the isotope are excreted from the person's body through their bowels.
