These types of videos on what not to do and decorating 101 are precisely what I need. I like how you simplify the concepts as it is easy to digest and remember.
Your idea to create a series of videos about common design mistakes is a really great idea! I'd love to see those as I'm learning so much from you. Thank you so much, Julie.
Hi Julie, I would love to see a video of decorating mistakes in an open area where the kitchen, island, dining table and family room are all connected.
Yes do the series. It’s very helpful. I have an extra long living room that needs to be divided into two living areas and I now know to buy a large area rug 🤗 and I had no clue about the tv placement
Yes I would like a series of breakdown of each room . Thank you for helping with all this information. This info is very helpful in deciding how to decorate my home. 👍🏻
Yes, break down the many design mistakes into rooms and even further than that, like a particular section of that room, i.e., accessories for a fireplace/mantel or bookcase or layout. You are of the few hosts/hostesses of this type of program whose delivery is calm, confident, and to-the-point. No rambling or extraneous chatter. No ego. Thanks.
Thank you for watching Judith! All of the above is currently on my channel. Simply search the exact terms and you should be directed. Check out my common design mistakes playlist for all the different rooms.
I’m so happy I did some stuff right ! I knew about the curtains and the area rug. Everyone told me I was crazy for getting such a big rug but I’m so happy I did !
Absolutely! Your approach is informative, clear, practical and clarifying - Oh! That's what this room needs or that's what doesn't work and why! You're building a great channel!
I have watched 100s of videos on design and have taken many design classes however I find Julie to be the best in explanation . Love her style. Your never to old to learn. 💕
Some very good tips. I heard the one about hanging curtains on another channel, as it happens, but it’s an excellent tip and one I shall use next time I redecorate. I also like the idea of choosing the wall colour to match furniture, instead of the other way around. Not pushing furniture against the walls is only appropriate if you have a very large room; believe me, if you saw the size of my living room you’d understand why the furniture is against the walls! Make sure a room has a focal point? - definitely. Size of area rug? Hmm. Again, I think this depends on the size of the room. My house is old and the rooms are tiny, but it does have very nice hardwood floors. I just have a living room rug to add some colour and for a cosy place to rest my feet when I’m watching TV. If it was as large as you suggest it would cover up one of the most attractive features in the room.
Thanks so much for watching Kat! Of course take these tips in stride as everyone’s home has specific conditions. Glad you were able to get something out of it though!
I agree about the area rugs - what if you have beautiful hardwood floors? personally I use bamboo tatami mats - can't really see them - but they protect the hardwood - but blend in seamlessly
I love that you’ve made a video addressing common mistakes and I do look forward to more! I have a large pit style couch in my living room and I’m sure that it’s improper for the room setup 😕
Design mistakes series is now up on the channel! Check it out in the playlist! In regards to TV height, if you have a smaller space always start at 50” a.f.f. on center and raise the TV up from there. 65” may still be too high for some if your viewing point is only a few feet away. My sweet spot is around the 50” mark because my ceiling height is only 7ft at the lowest point in my ranch-style home.
YESSS My comment also! I often assisted coworkers in the office who had their monitors set up at TOO HIGH a level, then complained of headaches, and shoulder strains. They had not understood what an easy fix changing the monitor’s level (plus breaks) would make for them!
Yesss, please make this a series!!! I've already learned so much, just from this one video. I just recently moved into my first apartment, but my Mom lives out of state now :( So, I'm learning all of my design tips from you! Great channel, & great content!!!
Just subbed so I can watch more. This was so helpful. I moved into my husband's house and it's a design nightmare and would love to see you talk about design challenges you may have come across and how you fixed them. Example for me: The backs of his upper and lower kitchen cabinets form one of the walls to the dining room. It's hideous and I've yet to figure out what to do with it shy of knocking out the upper cabinets (which is not feasible for us to do right now).
Thank you for your support 🙏🏻 Try drawing your eye away from the kitchen and creating a focal point in the dining space with a beautiful pendant light, art in the walls. Treat each space separately and even if they’re adjacent. You can also finish the back of the cabs with nicer materials since you have to look at them
I have a kitchen counter backed by a counter a few inches higher on the dining room side. Only 22” space to see through. Dark oak cabinets and just ugly and depressing. So I had the cabinets above removed and knocked out the (also 22” hi wall... 7’ across) out. Had a Taj Mahal shaped arch dry walled in. Huge open space now. (I’ve had other arches built in here and there as well). The cabinets below the dining counter and all kitchen cabinets are now white inside and out (I’m the painter) and I am refinishing new filigree hardware handles in a soft Matt gold. So the point is, can you open the space?
@@marielucier7982 Thx for your response. That's exactly what i have going on! The problem is that the cabinets were just installed 2 or 3 years ago and my SO doesn't want any cabinets removed since "they just got installed". I gotta pick my battles and figure out how to somehow make that 22 inch gap work.
As a registered architect with 30 years experience and two RISD degrees, I have to say, YAY I agree with so many of your comments. Nice videos! Thanks.
Yes, I would like more of these videos. I would also add to this list: hanging wall art too high (especially in British homes), and scaling furniture and accessories incorrectly.
Yes, I am currently working on a HUGE scale and proportions video/ one of my fav design topics to break down and discuss! Thank you for watching and the feedback Kimberly 🙏🏻
I was real excited when she called out mounting TVs over the fireplace for being not ergonomic. Spot on! But then came the silly 65" AFF recommendation, which is NOT ergonomic- it's still too high. The middle of the screen should be at eye level, which is around 42" high. If you're sitting in a recliner with your head tilted back, then the TV can be mounted higher, but on a tilt mount so top of the screen can be moved forward.
Just re-read this! You’re absolutely right Ken! I meant 45” AFF! All my TV’s are hung at this height 🤦🏻♀️ Need to make a little cheat sheet to pin for viewers, thanks for calling this out!
Could you do a more detailed video on how to avoid mistake of choosing the same material (wood, metal) all the way in a space. I m struggling with how to choose ones that compliment each other . Also, if we have an tiny open space (living + dining together and the kitchen) how do I choose where to put the focal points? Do I do a focal points for each area? Would it be too busy for a small place?
Thanks for the video suggestion! Focal points are arbitrary, first decide on what’s important to highlight in your space and develop the adjacent rooms around that. If it’s a beautiful mirror in the dining room, let that be the star.
Yes. Please do make a series of design mistakes per room. I am well versed in design dos and don’ts, but I am setting up a playlist for a dear younger friend. I just love how awesome you are and how well you present these guidelines.
"I know what your saying but my room is small however" goes ahead and shows the biggest living rooms I've ever seen lol yeah mines a closet compared to those.
She has good intentions. But she is not speaking to the normal crowd. I almost laughed when she showed the examples. I clearly cannot see the idea applying to actual small houses 🙄
I appreciated the information on area rugs. I've been using them wrong. I have reallyn nice ones situated around funiture, but no focal point. Little tips like these at a time are very helpful if someone is just trying to "jazz up" or modify what they have already.
Julie Khuu yes. Please. I’m just subscribing to your videos, I’m glad I ran into them while. browsing on internet. My problem is I have a lot a nice pictures, decorative vases, it I think I’m arranging wrong, I don’t know how to utilize space. I have what you term as focal points all in one room
“Don’t push your furniture against the wall”. Lol! Clearly never been in a typical English three bed semi or terraced house! If it’s not against the wall, it literally wouldn’t fit! Although the other tips were great!
Lol! No, I get it 😂 Just not ALL your furniture. The main piece can be pushed against the wall, but you can float accent chairs to square out a seating group 👍🏻
Julie Khuu Wow! Thanks for the reply! It’s only because I’m jealous of those beautiful spacious American homes with their ‘great’ rooms, with multiple seating areas, and nothing against the walls! Here in the UK either the back of the sofa is going against the wall, or your knees are! 😂
Julie..this is a lovely informative vid..the first point ..I thought that since the walls are majority of area to cover..has the most mood evoking affect..Isnt it important to decide this first..maybe white is an excrption?? ♡Lis
I give every view in a room something beautiful to look at....not competing size focal points or types of objects or arrangements but the eye SEEKS so mething to rest upon always...signed, an artist.
Julie, you are adorable and have a sharp eye. Of course, I realized a major problem referencing paint: choosing it before it's decorated. As a property manager/Realtor, paint must be chosen for a home or space prior to selling. I'll check out your other vids to see if you've covered this.

I call it my solution-based series (less about mistakes, more about solving them). Currently up in the playlist now Spencer! We’re a few episodes in ☺️

Hi Julie,
I would love to see a video of decorating mistakes in an open area where the kitchen, island, dining table and family room are all connected.
I have that exact same situation in my own home, I’ll put this in the queue. Thanks for the suggestion Gloria!

100%. Painful to decorate
Yes do the series. It’s very helpful. I have an extra long living room that needs to be divided into two living areas and I now know to buy a large area rug 🤗 and I had no clue about the tv placement
Yes! Use that area rug to demarcate space. If you want to break the room up into two smaller seating areas- buy 2 rugs instead.
Yes, I have the same issue- a living room that is long and narrow, and is bisected by the door to the bedrooms. Please go room by room.
