I think all along she knew deep down that she couldn’t play the FBI, she just wanted to see the dragon in its lair for herself. She just did what she does best; manipulate and sabotage under a guise of kindness and doting. She initially was constantly trying to hurt Robert’s chances while looking like she wanted to help. It was only in the end when she realized the schadenfreude of her efforts and had a change of heart at the last minute.
@@WULDORI Marie is a true narcissist. A wolf in sheeps clothing if you will... the only thing that matters to Marie, is what _she_ wants. It was only until the FBI agent was going to truly turn down Robbie for reasons that had nothing to do with her, did she change her tune because she took it as an affront to her as a mother. Not really because of Robert.
I love this episode because it shows despite her meddling ways, deep down Marie really did care about the well-being of her family. She was just too much of a control freak and thought sabotaging them was a form of love. I also think it's hilarious that it took a literal FBI agent to crack Marie and get her to admit her to her faults. That's some great writing right there.
3:00 - 3:46 She should have told her son this from the start instead of all the BS she did with his suit, the letter and going to the FBI. She could have sat Robert down after the interview without interfering in anyway with his suit, sending the letter, any of it. Thanks for uploading.
@@Nicole_B.Ella-Ella I would change the ending too "..... overbearing, meddling, controlling, manipulative, passive aggressive Marie we all know and love to hate and despise."
When her default manipulative and gaslighting persona gets seen through by a professional, all you get is a caring mother who wants her family safe and being taken care of. Very good and funny episode 👍
Marie is a narcissist, she may say she is doing it out of "love", which is true. Marie is indeed doing it out of love - of herself! This is more about controlling Robert than anything else.
I don’t think Marie realizes that the FBI investigates handwriting analyses so he knew that she was sabotaging her son. There have been plenty of murder cases where people have tried to make murders look like suicides. If she had hastily scribbled that letter, the handwriting would’ve been sloppy. The fact that it wasn’t shows she knew what she was doing and had planned it meticulously.
Everyone should remember that this episode aired a few months (early 2002) right after 9/11. It was a poignant episode after we lost so many NYPD and NYFD.
The problem with Marie is that she always interfer with her family's personal live that she she never really think about the serious conseques to her own action like she did to Robert.
People forget that this wasn't the first time she showed she worried about Robert's job. When ray finally saw how brave his brother is and giving everyone crap for not acknowledging it, Marie (and Frank) didn't want to talk about it because they worried about it, as a coping mechanism.
Marie's comment is exceptionally moving if you consider the fact that this was early 2002, right after 9-11. They live in Long Island, so in reality, Robert would have likely been at Ground Zero.
Annnnd of course she throws a tantrum and gets all butthurt all because it didn’t go her way and she was told no. And when she said “I wanted to fix what I did. Translation: This guilt is bad for my ego, so I need to manipulate as much as possible so my ego is restored, I can’t stand being wrong.
Marie met her match. She seriously thought she could lie and manipulate the FBI. 😂
Too bad she didn’t meet the agents from Criminal Minds.
Nor from watching Forensic Files

the fbi lies for a living lol cant out lie someone whos job it is to lie
“Alright if that’s what u want” “I really think the fbi can use my son”😂

Doris was an incredible talent. R.I.P. Doris Roberts 🙏
What an amazing actress.
Marie: thank you, have a cookie at 2:41 LOL
A mother’s love is the most precious gift.
This episode was one of the most epic in the whole series.
We need more bosses like this...he seems to have a lot of people skills.
This scene proves that even though she very rarely showed it and always favored Ray, Marie still did love Robert and cared for his safety.
That's exactly what I got from this episode. Also the episode when Robert got attacked by the bull.
FBI Director: bastards at 0:58 LOL
gets me every time.🤣
This ep was Emmy worthy that Brad and Doris both won their Emmy’s for Best Supporting Roles.
The fact that you can hear one of the audience members say “Uh-Oh” somewhere between “Better qualified than my Robbie?” and “Yes.” 😂😅
Amazing acting from Doris Roberts. You could just see her crumble.

Then she wouldn't be the intrusive, over bearing, meddling, controlling , manipulative, passive aggressive Marie we all know and love 😂

I always loved when Marie would get serious about Robert, it showed that she really cares for and loves him.
If only she'd shown that side of herself to him more often. Maybe he wouldn't have always felt like second best to Ray all the time.
"He was supposed to retire!"
Every interstate truck driver's mother/wife/sister 💔
4:39 You can see a storm coming with that look

If only this was who she was all the time, then Robert would be a lot happier
She’s a manipulative control freak. When her bs doesn’t work she came up with a new angle

"My Robbie's TOO GOOD for you!"

I know that she would drive me up a wall, but I can’t imagine a better mother than this fine lady! ❤
Kitty Forman from That 70's Show, easy.
Lmao the way he says "bastards" kills me every time like he knew the workers at the entrance of the building just wanted to fxck w/ him🤣
This episode had more character arcs and better pacing than most modern day movies
This scene and the one where she tried to get Robert to admit that he was “gay” were some of Doris Roberts’ best acting. A truly iconic actress.
The way she went in the office like if she was speaking to a principal
You have to wonder how many agents have pissed off the guards at the front entrance. 🤔
This episode should have gotten the series an Emmy, Marie, and Robert awards alone on their performances.
Everyone should remember that this episode aired a few months (early 2002) right after 9/11. It was a poignant episode after we lost so many NYPD and NYFD.
They live on Long Island, don't they. In reality, Robert would have probably been at Ground Zero. 😭
All the colors of the dysfunction rainbow.... 😅
The problem with Marie is that she always interfer with her family's personal live that she she never really think about the serious conseques to her own action like she did to Robert.
So many people hate Marie. She definitely had her faults, but she was also one heck of a Mom!
Mrs. Barone was profiled by the FBI😂
This was released in 2002 and this is set in a suburb of NYC.
People forget that this wasn't the first time she showed she worried about Robert's job. When ray finally saw how brave his brother is and giving everyone crap for not acknowledging it, Marie (and Frank) didn't want to talk about it because they worried about it, as a coping mechanism.
He don't want Marie cookies
She did it out of love. A mother's love can be force of nature.
I dont always agree with her bu Marie's clapback at the end was too good
I love it😂
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is the FBI man the man from Forrest Gump? "Is there a Mr Gump, Mrs Gump?"
Marie's comment is exceptionally moving if you consider the fact that this was early 2002, right after 9-11. They live in Long Island, so in reality, Robert would have likely been at Ground Zero.
Every once in a while u see marie's shield's drop and then she is enough is enough and u can see it on her face when all the jokes are put aside...

Its. A. TV. Show.. jeezus, some of you really need to relax.
@1:30 .....that is my wife. We miss you Doris
This cut out the best part: And your wife DOES look like your mother!
& Robert thought Marie didn’t love or care enough about him
This is my mom 💯
😂😂😂
How did u get in
It reminds me of my Aunt Vicki.😏😏
Sadly Marie didn't get the waterboarding she so richly deserved rom the FBI.
i want a cookie
Marie is making it worse
No she didn't.
Robert you make good money why are you living with her?
