This scene explains SO MUCH about the characters! Marie and Frank's night of passion unintentionally led to Robert's conception, and they were forced into marriage without being able to fall in love first. This is why Marie neglects Robert and favors Ray so much. Every time she looks at Robert, she sees the reason why she's stuck with a man like Frank, while Ray was the child she always wanted.
