  • Properly equalizing dialogue is crucial to making a good mix. In this video I will talk through and demonstrate how I approach EQ for dialogue in my projects.
    For a demonstration, with audio, of both my Dialogue EQ and Dialogue Compression techniques, take a look at my video on Voice-over Processing.

    Really appreciate your work here. Sound mixing insight for film and TV and dialogue mixing is almost nonexistent on UA-cam.

    bizarre that we don't hear the changes or the original audio

      Yes, I realize I need to do that. I'll make a video to demo the sound on DIA EQ and COMP soon.

    A nice, clear explanation of how to create a starting place for setting an EQ for voice, however… as others have mentioned here, it would’ve been much more meaningful to actually hear a sample voice recording with and without your settings as well as when you were sweeping the frequency node around.

    As with your Compression video this was great. So easy to understand. I'm new to vocal audio processing (recording my own audiobook narrations) and would really be grateful for your 'How to use' the Protools De-essing and Expander Gate plug-ins. Thanks so far!

    Thank you for the clear explanation Tom. In various media including radio, I've noticed that for the 'main' speaker they are sometimes applying a HPF at around 120kHz. It's an interesting way to make the main speaker stand out from the other speakers. A little test that I use is to simply turn up the volume when listening. If it is uncomfortable to listen to then I usually use a low shelf like you demonstrated to adjust. By the way, I'm an enthusiast, not a pro.

    interesting but you dont play the result of your eq changes on the dialogue clip - which I find strange -

    Thanks for the video Tom, this was very helpful. Do you ever use multi band compressors for dialogue?

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger  2 дні тому

      Good question! Yes, I do use a multi band compressor in my dialogue chain. I like to set it for a very mild amount of compression, with the most active compression on the high midrange. I find this helps to keep the harsh bits of dialogue tucked in.

    Great video thanks. Does your approach to EQ change if it’s voiceover versus dialogue?

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger  Рік тому +2

      No. But if the VO is very well recorded I might allow for a bit more low end.

    • @colindayo
      @colindayo Рік тому

      @@tomefinger so if there are no thumps or pops possibly set the high pass a little lower, perhaps?

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger  Рік тому +1

      @@colindayo Yes, if you feel like the VO sounds better. So maybe like 65hz.

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger  Рік тому +1

      It mostly stays the same, except that with VO I try to see if a little more bass helps, but it doesn't always.

  • @PROJECT-de9pd
    @PROJECT-de9pd 6 місяців тому

    well, you need to knock a bit of 80hz out - it's like a constant hum on your voice.

    I have a question.
    I want to restore the vocals to some of the songs in Wario Land 4. Mainly the ending song. They are old, compressed, and crushed for the System. The original recordings are behind Nintendos closed doors. I've tried many ways, including.. Gulp.. Ai... But nothing really works.
    How would you go about restoring 8bit/16bit compressed audio / vocals?
