To remove the hiss I had to go to the "EQ" and turn the "High" dial all the way off. The loop tool was a cool trick though.
thank you! lowering the "high" dial is the only thing that has worked!
thank you!!! it worked!
did you guys lower it to 0 or to negatives? and in the middle or the right?
Thank you so much this helped me!
It worked 👍
Jen... You are an absolute legend. You're going to make my content sound 100 times better! Just what I was looking for! Thanks!
I'm a DIY animator and i've been struggling with figuring out how to get air off my vocal recordings on GB. Stumbled onto your vid, so simple yet totally fixes it, THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this!
You, miss, really helped me out. What also helped, was the other comment where you linked to how to activate the plugin. Thank you!
Thanks a million for this tutorial, my podcast product has been very bad but I’m sure with this fix I’m good to go. 💯💯💯
thank you lady from the internet , this was very helpful :)
when I do this it removes the background noise but makes the audio jumpy when I speak
Jen Edds yes it was either removing the background noise really well but making it jumpy or not removing the backgroumd noise
This didn't answer the question about the audio being jumpy. I'm having the same problem. I have it on -27dB.
Than you for responding so quickly Jen. It was set to the default setting Noise Gate. I tried Background Vocals and now my voice comes in and out. I'm really confused to why this is happening. The Noise Gate takes it out but then you have this problem. I have Audacity also which was able to eliminate the hissing noise with no problem and the recording sounds good. I wanted to record it on GB since I have it. But I don't want to waste any more time trying to correct this. The only thing that seems to work is adding background music.
The thing is, turning down the noise gate doesn't seem to eliminate the background noise for me. It all comes back in as soon as I make a noise. It also cuts off my voice/instrument too early if I even go below 60. Now, for someone reason, the white noise/fuzz is especially prominent, and wasn't as bad as before, but now every time I try to even make a new audio track the fuzz remains.
yes the reason is, it doesn't cut background noise, it cuts desibels so anything above a certain volume will come through, hence the music or vocals being "jumpy". i dont have a solution, I'm afraid, even though there was this one "Plug-in" you can buy that does this for you. But its bit pricey. 100$ or something..
Thaaank you for that short and on point video. Sending you sooo much love.
Rarely do I comment on UA-cam videos out of sheer laziness, HOWEVER, your tutorial is impeccable. Thank you for clearly explaining it. You've helped me tremendously with my Voice Over auditions!
Thank you! This is so nice to hear.
Good luck with your auditions!
Hey Jen thanks for this video, very helpful. I hope my podcast will sound better now. 👍
Solid, short and sweet. Thank you!
Thank you!!! this is so nice and easy and I really appreciate your help.
Great video. Thx for the tip, the background noise was driving me crazy. Cheers.
Thank you so much about this video ! I was about to buy a specific software in order to remove this kind of noise, but I never thought Garage Band would have done it for me :)
The noise gate is a great place to start. Unfortunately, it doesn't always get it all. Which software are you looking at for noise removal?
OMG thank you so much! its super easy and it just change my life :* thank you from my hearth
Thanks for the simple tutorial. Much appreciated.
This worked! Thank you so much :) Your tutorial was straight to the point.
Thanks!
Hugely helpful! Thank you SOOOO much!
Thank you -- that solved my problem straight away!
Thank you very much! This helped me a lot.

You're welcome!

Thanks for this! Simple, quick fix :-)
Really helpful. Thanks a lot
When I try to click on the Noise Gate button it doesn't allow me to activate it. What can I do to activate it?
Amazing, clear, and helpful vid
Thanks!
Thank you Jen! Great tutorial
Thanks!
Thank you, You're helpful
Thanks a lot! You did help me.
Thank you for the help!!
do you know how to remove computer fan noise? I have a mic and for some reason when recording it picked up the computer built in mic still
Brilliant, at least for a novice like me this helps a lot. thanks for sharing!
Brilliant! thank you :)
Lovely, thx 🙏🏾
Thank you Jen x
How do I get that panel up in the latest version of Garageband?
THANK YOU JEN!!!!
What are u using? You never said what ir using and I need to know so I can get it. I need the hissing sound gone
straight to the point! THANK YOU!!!
You're welcome!
Thanks, that really helps
Thank you for this!!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much!
I dont have those things you click om onder the tfree coulor dots,,
where dan I find these?
Actually helps! Even better if you adjust the EQ and other settings. Doesn't entirely work, but I think it's because my recordings are just bad. I'm using a cheap microphone and using my bathroom as my studio. Still better than nothing. And I'm thankful I found this video!
Thanks! Have you tried running your recordings through auphonic.com? It's a fantastic tool for leveling and also has noise reduction. That might also be helpful. Are you recording music or a podcast? I love the reverb in my bathroom for music, but my podcast would sound horrible if I was recording it there. Even with an inexpensive microphone, if you're in a good room, I've found it is still possible to get a decent recording. Let me know if you have more questions.
@@BrassyBroadJen Heyyy, thanks for recommending auphonic. I've not heard of it before. Actually, I use my bathroom for both music and podcast. Sadly, I don't have any place else. I'll try auphonic.com and I'll give an update about how it goes!
Pickle Piper try making a pillow fort! Sounds silly, but it will help with the reverb. If you have to record in the bathroom, try throwing blankets or towels over the shower curtain rod to help deaden the sound in the room. That can also be helpful.
@@BrassyBroadJen Oh wow, that's a great idea! I'm a silly little noob, your suggestions are such great help! Thank you!
Pickle Piper Happy I could help!
thanks for this helped my podcast sound out today with all background noise
That's great! So happy it helped.
Thank you! That was exactly what I was looking for!
You're welcome! Are you new to podcasting or have you been podcasting for awhile?
@@BrassyBroadJen Actually, I am creating an animated short, and I am splicing together all the voice actor's lines in Garage Band, then importing it all into Adobe Animate. Then when the animation is done, I'll import that into iMovie for the final edit.
@@NikiGaliano Wow! That sounds like a cool project.
Thank you!
thanks for the pointers.
You're welcome!
thanks for the tip
What version of Garage Band are you using?
Thanks!!
THANK YOU.
Is there a way you can do this on iOS ?
Very helpful! Thank you
Thanks!
Thanks so much for making tNice tutorials video! You really broke it down well.
Thank you!
helpful. thanks
All the reviews on the App Store are complaining about the newest version of GarageBand. Everyone is saying it is super glitchy and laggy. Anybody else experience this with the newest update?
Woohoo. Thanks Jen
You’re welcome!
thank you! so helpful!
You're welcome!
I’m using GarageBand on my phone and Noise Gate doesn’t remove any background noise at all. Parts of the audio just cut out when I turn it up.
How about for iPad?
Hey quick question how did you get your waveform so pronounced ? I’ve seen a lot of people struggling like me with a small sound profile . Is it merely your input is that much higher or is there another trick ? I’m using a helix interface and levels should be where they are supposed to be on the helix .. but idk still at a loss . I have hiss and a small sound profile at the same time which sucks I can’t just add gain cuz I’m sure I’d get more hiss
Corey, I'm sure I had the gain cranked up on the mic so that I could get the noise at a level where it could be heard clearly for this video. What kind of mic are you using? I know some mics, like the Shure SM7B are going to need some additional boost. I recently upgraded my mic to the Shure MV7 so I have the flexibility of recording straight USB into my mic or connecting to my audio interface with XLR connection. I've been super happy with the upgrade.
@@BrassyBroadJen I’m actually using the sm7b ! I’ve dug in a lot after asking this and I realized I was over analyzing and not realizing that in GarageBand you will have smaller waveforms in general compared to logic. I do use a phantom powered mixer plus the cloud lifter so it was just about me gain staging properly and learning where the input range is normally acceptable. From what I read anywhere from -20 to around - 12 should be decent range . I just wish GB and even logic automatically zoomed in on the waveform for easier editing . I wanna say older versions of GB had larger WF’s but I could be wrong . Anyways thanks for the response and content !
My mic started making a flapping fart noise after recording about an hour. Any ideas?
THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
When I’m in GarageBand I don’t experience any hiss sound it’s only when I export to my phone I start to hear it
Your name should be BrassyBroadBOSSJen ! This helped a lot. Thanks :)
Haha! Thanks. I love it.
I just downloaded the app and I’m completely confused. How do you even get to this screen? I have a video on my iPhone with lots of hissing that I’d like to remove but all this technical stuff is just too much for me. I need help. 😞
Hi, I'm looking for software to start a podcast. Do you consider GarageBand friendly for beginners?
Any recommendations?
@@BrassyBroadJen thank you!
Freeken hate that noise. It's weird because some of my tracks have it and some don't. It's got to be another solution
Graciasssss😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Noise gate only removes the background noise when I am not talking. Any ideas?
Hmm okay thanks. I'll let you know if I figure it out!
When I cycle recorded and changed noise gate to get rid of it, it got rid of the noise for the pure background noise segment, but the background noise was just as loud as before in the segments where I was speaking.
Meredyth, another option to look at is auphonic.com. They have a de-noiser that you can use. It's easy to drag and drop your file and you get 2 hours of processing time with their free version. Use it on files with dialogue only, before you mix with any music.
@@BrassyBroadJen Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately, this also didn't do anything to reduce the noise.
Would this also be good when recording cassettes that have a lot of hiss?
I haven't tried it with that application. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
i cant press noise gate
thaankkk you
Good video but you know how y can reduce the voice eco?? thank very much
There isn't a way to get rid of the echo in Garageband. There are tools like Izotope Dialogue De-Reverb and other plug-ins. The best thing to do if possible is to treat your recording space to lessen the voice reflection.
thanks!!
You're welcome!
How would I get rid of echo/background noise if I have 2 voices? I did this and the audio would jump in and out
@@BrassyBroadJen Two different tracks. Both people have roughly the same volume level. The problem I'm having is that each individual mic is picking up both voices
When I do this it only eliminates noise when I'm not talking. As soon as I start speaking it sounds hissy again.
@@BrassyBroadJen Thank you!
My only issue with this is it doesn't remove the hiss during the speaking, which makes this wall of sound just come in every time there's audio which is sometimes worse than there being hiss all the time.
Darren, Here are a couple of things to try - Turn down the gain on your mic so you have less hiss during recording. Another option would be to turn off the noise gate while you record so you have a consistent noise level.
I am still getting hiss in the background using this feature
Try using the noise reduction at auphonic.com. That might help.
It remove noise from the background but doesn't remove background noise when you speak. WHY????
also having the same issue
If you want to remove the noise while you're speaking, you need to get a plugin can can analyze the noise signal on its own, the apply an EQ setting that reduces the frequencies represented in the noise, then applies it to the whole recording. The problem is that it can also effect the quality of your voice, but generally for low level room tone they work pretty well. The key to noise reduction is to deal with it at the recording stage. Microphone placement is crucial just as recording in a treated space is important.
Use a real-time threshold limiter for volume. You can also use threshold gates for frequencies.
excuse me what mic do you use??
I was most likely using the ATR2100 mic. I'm also a big fan of the Samson Q2U mic.
Is this possible in an iphone?
You can access the noise-gate plugin in the version of GarageBand that I have on my iPhone. I'm using iOS 13.1.3. I haven't updated GB in awhile. Go into Track Settings and scroll down until you see Plug-ins and EQ. Press on the arrow to expand the view and Noise gate should pop up so you can adjust it there.
Or use iMovie which has a far better noise reduction system than garageband, and is also free and probably inbuilt in your mac.
Cool. Thanks for the suggestion.
THANKS YOU SO FUCKEN MUCH
I have a problem. I connect my guitar with distortion effects and a noise sounds. When I reduce the noise gate, the guitar sounds without body and the sound is cut
What I can do?
It wouldnt allow me to check the noise gate box :( could you help me?
When you click on the drop-down arrow next to where it shows Plug-ins, do you see Noise Gate in the list of effects in the plug-in slots? If not, you might need to add it to one of the plug-in slots. You will find the Noise Gate under Dynamics.
@@BrassyBroadJen Thank you for the response! I do see it but it would not let me check the noise gate box : (
@@ekyung Go into your GB preferences > Audio/Midi and make sure that you have the box ticked for "Enable Audio Units" under Effects.
this didn't work for me :( it kept cutting out specific parts even having it on the whole track :(
It only sometimes fixes the problem. It depends on how noisy the track is. You might try running it through auphonic.com.
tysm
I do not see this option - iphone 2020 SE
If you're looking for the plug-in settings, this is how I find it on the version of Garageband I have on my iPhone. There is a gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. Press that and then press Track controls. There, you will see the track settings, and you can scroll down to see the plug-ins.
The noise goes away when I'm not speaking, but is there when I'm speaking. Anyone else?
David, Thanks for your comment. Depending on the recording, it can be challenging to get the noise gate adjusted just right. You might find Auphonic.com to be more helpful. It's a good tool for noise reduction.
when i did it it removed all the noise like i couldn’t hear anything
wait i turned it off haha but it still makes that noise no matter what i put noise gate on
@@leximorgan1022 Try running your file through Auphhonic.com. That is another option for removing noise if the noise gate isn't helping.
This is how you sound like a robot 🤙🏻
I can't find gain.. Its not in my options
Do you mean down in the Plug-ins section? If you put the cursor down under the last plug-in shown and click, it should pop up with more plug-ins you can add to the chain.
@@BrassyBroadJen found it under Utility thank you!
Thank you now I can make more rap music and sound better
There is no “I button”
your room sounds better then mine
I've got carpet and some acoustic panels to help with the sound reflection. Rugs and blankets can help a lot.
