Everyone tells me I need AIS so that tows can see me on the river. I never travel at night or bad weather. As for bends in the river, good old fashioned "Securite'" works for me.
I’m not sure if the normal boater NEEDS AIS. It might just be a nice to have thing. But we all know I’m not the normal boater. 😉
I decided to get AIS because we are on our way to the Mississippi River system and I wanted to make sure the tugs know I am there particularly when I am at anchor for the night. I also want to be able to see them coming in part so that I know when to weigh anchor in order to hitch a ride behind them so they can clear a path for me. At least that’s the plan. Of course, we all know about plans.
