- This Video is about the ICOM M94D, a VHF handheld Marine radio with the AIS capability, also GPS and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) via Marine Mobile Service Identity (MMSI).
Amazing technology on the Ocean in a small handheld package, great safety device for active boaters, fishermen, jet skiers, personal watercraft users and even Scuba Divers and Free divers using a Personal Locator Beacon such as the Nautilus Marine GPS Rescue device.
Since most of the smaller boats we dive from do not have AIS technology on board, and we so many divers seeming to be "lost at sea" for many varied reasons, this handheld AIS Receiver in a VHF radio is welcome device. It can be carried in your dive bag and left with the captain, should you surface and the boat not be there, if you carry the Nautilus Lifeline Marine GPS Rescue unit (good to 130 feet and deeper) you can now use this Personal Locator Beacon to signal for help via the AIS system.
This is the default operating mode of the Nautilus Lifeline and therefore works with this VHF M94D Handheld radio with AIS made by ICOM.
What a very welcome device.

Great review, very helpful. Thanks for posting.
Thank you and you are very welcome!
Very impressive breakdown. It aided me in choosing this as my personal work radio for use on towboats on inland waterways in the United States. Very excited to have these safety features on me at all times. Can’t wait to start using it.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, I enjoyed putting in the effort and doing the video more pleased that it was appreciated, sharing is caring for us seafarers. Stay safe.
Great video Ron! Keep up the good work!
Your comment is much appreciated, Thanks Rob :)

Thank you Ron, a very thorough breakdown of the Icom M94D, ive been using this VHF for a while and Iam more than happy with it and the features it provides. Stay safe out there.
Thank you kindly Rob, I always carry mine in my bag, charged and ready to go, it really is a good backup device, I especially use mine for the SCUBA Diving out here close to that Gulf Stream Current. Stay safe also Rob
Thanks Ron. You Sir certainly have a really good way of explaining things nice and clearly.
Thank you kindly David for your time and, I appreciate your comment.

Thank you
Hi Ron, thanks for the great review. I'd like to suggest an edit regarding the distress button. Activating that button (by pushing and holding for 3-5 secs) is akin to making a distress call on ch 16 (Mayday, Mayday, Mayday). That differentiates it from a MOB, in that a MOB gives a location but not necessarily the status of the person(s) involved.
Thanks for this Tech info Scott, much appreciated, I shall review and amend my info, thanks so much for this feedback, I very much appreciate your comment.
I also carry a Magnum 1012 am/fm/ssb handheld radio
Checked it out, looks interesting.
Great video ,but when I go to boat us to get mmsi # they say I need to go to fcc for a license also because of DSC. Is this true if I'm just offshore in US waters ?
Ron, looking to buy this. Is there a way to program my MMSI number in the radio once I receive it or does it have to be done at ICOM? Loved the video
Thanks for your good question, and I appreciate your comments about the video, thank you. The MMSI number can be set "ONCE" by the user, after that it can only be changed by the factory as per the manual for this radio. The instructions to enter your MMSI number is quite simple (as evidenced by the fact that I entered mine :) ! I just referenced this info and it is on page 11 of the manual. The manual is available for download via the ICOM website, hope this helps. Best regards Ron

The Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI: DSC self ID) code consists of 9 digits. You can only enter the code when turning ON the transceiver for the first time.
1. Hold down [ ] to turn ON the transceiver.
• Three short beeps sound, and “Push [ENT] to register your
MMSI” is displayed.
2. Push [ENT] to start entering the MMSI code.
• The “MMSI Input” screen is displayed. L To skip the entry, push [CLR] twice.
If you skip the entry, you cannot make a DSC call. To enter the code after skipping, turn OFF the power, and then turn it ON again.
3. Enter the MMSI code.
4. Repeat step 3 to enter all 9 digits.
5. Select “Finish,” and then push [ENT] to set the entered
code.
• The “Confirmation” screen is displayed.
6. Enter your MMSI code again to confirm.
• When a different code is entered from the “MMSI Input” screen, “MMSI does not match.” is displayed. Enter a code again in step 2.
7. Select “Finish,” and then push [ENT] to set the entered code.
• When your MMSI code is successfully entered, “MMSI registered successfully.” is briefly displayed, and then enters the operating screen.
L Your MMSI code is also displayed on the operating screen.
This initial code entry can be done only once.
After entering, it can be changed only by your dealer or distributor. If your MMSI code has already been entered, this entry is not necessary.
Most important step is missing - registration. Has to be done when the radio is first turn on. Did you ignore that on purpose?
Thanks for the review. My M94D screams Collison alarm every 30 second. How do you set it so it doesn't alarm? Thanks.
I have the same issue, I guess I need to read booklet. Hopefully it explains.
What is the model # of the radio with Bluetooth model you showed on screen @9:54?
Great video. Looking for a handheld radio for working (I'm seaman). I'm thinking about this one or the cobra HH500 (or 600). Which one would you choose? Thanks a lot
I have an Icom and have had Icom as a trusted brand in ham radio since the 1980’s (icom 720a), i also own a cobra handheld (hh500) as a back up on a boat in Trinidad, but based on features, battery life and dependability, my choice will be the ICOM brand again … not knocking the Cobra brand in any way. The HH600 looks good and price is very attractive.
I chose the ICOM based on dsc / ais based on some solo dive locations i do and the fact that i have the nautilus lifeline. Hope i offered some help :) tough call !
Thanks for messaging Mr. Victor
Thanks for sharing. For Kayaker, do I still need MMSI?
Hi, good day, it is not a must to be able to use the radio, but the feature is great for safety if you own a Kayak. If you are in the USA you can now register through Boat US to get your MMSI number, in other countries probably call the Telecom arm of Government and inquire; it's fairly quick and easy, you can then put this number into your VHF radio so if you ever had to use the distress / mayday red emergency call button, it will give the Coast Guard an idea of who you are and what vessel they should be looking for with the coordinates broadcast from the VHF radio, in the past three weeks here where I am located there have been two Kayaks sighted with Kayaker missing. I have photos and details, but the important thing is you should wear it attached to you or very close by in a "grab bag" perhaps for safety. I keep the Nautilus Lifeline attached to me and that also sends out a distress call and it shows on this VHF handheld I have. Happy to offer any further suggestions or explanations as needed. You have an interesting video channel, will check it out. Stay safe.
@@rontiah Hi Ron, thanks for taking time to explain. I am living in Singapore and hope to do more water activities solo that’s why I am
Considering such ration for personal safety . I will check on the procedure to get MMSI locally. Thanks again
I do a bit of adventurous Kayaking and free diving and fishing, and I am often alone, but not as remote as you seem to be. I do recommend the following product, i literally attach to me in a pocket once at sea 90% of the times I am alone or have in a grab bag, not trying to sell you anything, jus recommend ... no registration is required for this device also, can I invite you to take a look at this video : ua-cam.com/video/cbIJdHO793k/v-deo.html
Does the radio show your speed over ground?
any way to charge spare batteries out of the handset so they are ready to go Captain Q asks
Hi Alan / Captain Q, thanks for your question, included in the box was a "rapid charger" - Part number BC251 which can only charge the included Li-ION Battery when it is in the ICOM Handheld radio, I did get a spare battery (BP-306) but could not find a charger to charge this battery as a standalone, so I must insert it into the M94D radio to charge. It is very inconvenient but this is the only way I can do it until they bring out a stand alone charger. Hope this helped, regards Ron
What is the range on these device overall?
Hi Jay, thanks for this good question. VHF radios first operate on line of sight, so the signal with most power (Wattage) and the highest antenna mount on a vessel (for example) will have the furthest reach. For the average 4 watt VHF Handheld with good atmospheric conditions one can expect maybe 3-5 miles range, and some might suggest even 4-6 under perfect conditions. Hope this helps.
How to order Sir ?
ميشه يگويي كه برد اين دستگاه چند كيلومتر است ؟
VHF Is line of sight, the other part range gauge approximately is the antenna height and transmission power of radio e.g 4watts vs low power 1 watt.
