Dude was captured by pirates and people are complaining about his speech pattern. It's a PTSD trigger when he is attempting to recall the story. I'm glad he was able to share his story. The ending could have been sadly different.

A lot of what you see is his ability to keep a conversation going. He makes his guests feel like they are just in a room with a couple of friends, not being watched by millions. He's very technical in his approach when it comes to getting people to talk more. He's a really good conversationalist. It's almost hard for me to believe he doesn't practice or rehearse in some kind of way. Not that that would make him any less of a fantastic interviewer, but he really is natural about it.

My brother had a friend he worked with for the better part of 20 years, they were both master mechanics for Mack. they were both presented with a lucrative opportunity to go into the DRC and work there on and off for a company. Thankfully my brother did not take it…his friend did and was captured by one of those groups and was forced to take care of a runway that they held for 7 years! He finally was released when this particular group was over run by another and was able to come home.

i'm somali, the country is a failed state. It doesn't mean there isn't a form of government as there has always been a system of clans with elder members at the top. There are 5 main clans with sup clans below them splitting off until it reaches local community level.
People have had to scrap and fight to survive for nearly 30 years so now you have 2 generations of somali men who have known that by using violence they can get whatever they want. Their power has got them so much fear that they have control over areas a whole clan used to run. Anyone who stands up to them gets murdered and when you can control the wages of the police then you have total dominance. On top of all this you have foreign agencies and militaries finically support whoever is willing to let them achieve there goals, leading to an all out shit show.
I miss my country, used to be so beautiful!

Somalia is quite underrated on the scale of the most dangerous destinations in the world. When I was about 10 back in the late 80s at school in New Zealand a teacher there had her husband taken hostage and was held captive for years also. It was big news at the time and nobody knew what the outcome would be. Amazingly she tried to keep her spirits high and just continued on with her job as in those days there wasn't really any other option. It was amazing when we learnt he had been released. What a lie you told here. Somalia failed as a state between 1990 and 1991. In the 1970’s to 1980’s Somalia was the place to go to vacation in Africa. It was peaceful with a functioning government back then. My parents took me from DC to Mogadishu in 1988. I have pictures of my childhood at the Lido Beach and Urubo Hotel. The problems begun with Britain, France and Italy dividing up Somalia then playing tribes off against each other to protect their ships.
Later, Italian trawlers using massive drift gillnets fucked the Somali fishing industry which was to be the countries main source of international trade. Other Italian vessels dumped huge amounts of toxic waste offshore for the cost of $1.25 per ton where it costs $125.00 per ton to dispose of in their own country, hit local small fishing villages.
Somalia could have prospered if they'd been 'allowed' to control their tuna fishing industry or even had their pleas listened to regarding their waters and fishing laws, but all we focus on is some Jimi Hendrix looking dudes wearing welding goggles trying to survive in a post colonial nightmare.
Look into their fascinating history, ancient Egypt called Punt 'the land of the gods'.
