Somalia is quite underrated on the scale of the most dangerous destinations in the world. When I was about 10 back in the late 80s at school in New Zealand a teacher there had her husband taken hostage and was held captive for years also. It was big news at the time and nobody knew what the outcome would be. Amazingly she tried to keep her spirits high and just continued on with her job as in those days there wasn't really any other option. It was amazing when we learnt he had been released. That was one of the biggest news stories of that era in my homeland
Tim O'donnell Underrated in dangerous places? I live here buddy and I’ve never came across any “danger” or “terrorist attack” these type of stuff are very rare and when it does happen it’s usually only a few who are killed.
Tim O’donnell What a lie you told here. Somalia failed as a state between 1990 and 1991. In the 1970’s to 1980’s Somalia was the place to go to vacation in Africa. It was peaceful with a functioning government back then. My parents took me from DC to Mogadishu in 1988. I have pictures of my childhood at the Lido Beach and Urubo Hotel. There were alcoholic beverages and amazing seafood. I remember the incredible taste of tropical fruits as a kid.
My brother had a friend he worked with for the better part of 20 years, they were both master mechanics for Mack. they were both presented with a lucrative opportunity to go into the DRC and work there on and off for a company. Thankfully my brother did not take it…his friend did and was captured by one of those groups and was forced to take care of a runway that they held for 7 years! He finally was released when this particular group was over run by another and was able to come home.
I am Somali and the thing about pirates caused is like drug dealers, if u see chance for making millions there is definitely people who will do like cartels.
@@madmullah242 of course but , generally somalis are more respectful toward foreigners, thier are curious about them , and they don't even expect them to do any thing stupid.
Fact, Somali pirates came about when foreign fishing vessels would invade Somali national waters and illegally catch fish and basically ran the locals main food source dry. It was pretty justified at the beginning but then they realized stealing shit is a lot more productive than catching fish.
Nope, they didn't even have nets before westerners gave them that tech. No way did they have this fishing paradise full of peace and love and freedom. If not for forigners stopping them they would still be enslaving each other and without forigners sending aid a good portion of the population would starve and die.
Great interview. Joe is probably one of my favorite interviewers. The questions are very well articulated. I always enjoy where he takes the narrative. Awesome guests. I could watch his channel all day, but I have to work. 🙄
What type of cars? What cell phones? What examples of conversations give away the difference in life perspectives between Bev Hill resident and a Somalian? Joe was fishing for the details but may be this man resented his time there too much to dig into his memory for those. Maybe he didn't want to product place.
They failed to address how this piracy started in Somalia 🇸🇴. It is because of overfishing by both European and Asian trawlers that pissed off a lot of ordinary Somali fishermen who started this whole thing as protection of their fisheries but it soon evolved into something else. The story of the Somali pirates reminds me that quote from THE DARK KNIGHT “ You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the Villain”. It definitely started with good intentions but greed took over and it became messy. Still same issues that started this is yet to be addressed
Who cares how it started? The individual decisions that people make to actively steal/kill and intimidate anyone in or near those waters count 100 times more than historical things you want to blame them on. People - pirates - are making ridiculously selfish decisions because they don't care about others at all; they deserve a .58 cent death.
@@rogue254 the Cubans and Russian saved them. There is a area where more than 300 cuban commandos got killed by Somalis and till today they go to pay their respect. Somalia would of won the war if Cuba and Russia never intervied
the reason Somalis don't have government is that they don't believe in hierarchy. So, no princes or kings or presidents in Somalia. where are my libertarians?
🙄 the US refused to allow government in Somalia since 1991 what you are calling government are few installed puppets who just rubber stamp what the US dictates including telling them they can’t talk to their opponents even if that were to produce peace and who are forced the debt of money they haven’t take from IMF and are expected to pay that money with interest
The problems begun with Britain, France and Italy dividing up Somalia then playing tribes off against each other to protect their ships. Later, Italian trawlers using massive drift gillnets fucked the Somali fishing industry which was to be the countries main source of international trade. Other Italian vessels dumped huge amounts of toxic waste offshore for the cost of $1.25 per ton where it costs $125.00 per ton to dispose of in their own country, hit local small fishing villages. Somalia could have prospered if they'd been 'allowed' to control their tuna fishing industry or even had their pleas listened to regarding their waters and fishing laws, but all we focus on is some Jimi Hendrix looking dudes wearing welding goggles trying to survive in a post colonial nightmare. Look into their fascinating history, ancient Egypt called Punt 'the land of the gods'.
10:13 Same for my parents that grew up in Hungary when it became an Eastern Block country. My mom DESPISED being forced to learn Russian. In fact, she said that the Russians were worse than the Nazis were. Not sure the context of that statement, but that was her viewpoint.
Piratism in Somalia from my understanding emerged because there were Europe trade ship dumping toxic waste along the coast of Somalia. The waste dumping caused a bunch of sea life death along the Somalia coast and a lot of fishermen to not be able to feed their families. Eventually a bunch pissed off fisherman started raiding European trade ships and acting as a de fact coast guard for their fishing communities and that evolved into the modern piracy there.

I worked with Somalis in Minnesota for survey project. They’re incredibly smart people. Doesn’t make sense why their homeland remains failed state for more than 30years.
The diaspora of most African nations are often the best. In other words, the somali diaspora might be the best of Somalia thus the disparity between them and those in the homeland

The hijacked vessels are in Somali waters, therefor you can’t call those people “pirates”. You would be pissed to if your oceans was getting emptied by foreign fishing vessels and toxic being dumped in your water
X X that's part of the truth... However many hijacked vessels are not fishing boats, and if you woud see mogadishu... You woud know that they dont care that much of the enviroment either. ( many somalis turned pirates when there wasnt enough fish due to explosive population growth in africa and foreign fishing boats).
X X you cannot just blame the rest of the world for YOUR mistakes. If you are the pirate YOU ARE THE PIRATE. Ofcourse there might be reasons you're driven to that spot, some of them are somalias /somalians fault, some have to do with foreign fishing and stuff but the majority is YOUR OWN FAULT. Reaponsibility is something unheard of these days.
X X but I guess post modernists like you have to blame ALL the problems of the third world on the white man (and everyone /anyone other than the 3rd world).
I'm a Somali, Somalia is a shithole but not as shithole as people think, it is the most lawless country in the world but the moral code of the people is quite high and they're pretty civilized compared to other Sub Saharan African countries, hence why this guy didn't get killed, we have mercy and empathy, part of being tough gives you a soft side too. For example in humans the males are more fair and just than females and that's because males are tougher than females. So we are a edgy people but also reasonable and very merciful.
Well Somalia has one of the worlds largest oil reserves, so lets talk about why the west is scrambling to build bases there and keep the population of Somalia deprived from what belongs to them.
damn a few years ago a friend that was in army asked me if i want to come with him (im from croatia) to guard sam ships of some company from pirates for a real good money...i was thinking for i while but i said no after all.....and i seen him last year he told me it's good i didn't come cuz he almost died and was hostage.

Those who want to read good papers on how Somalia's economic welfare objectively improved from 1991 to 2006 under anarchy, should read papers by Benjamin Powell and Peter Leeson.
I've met many Somalians here in minnesota and one was really cool, the others very stand offish. I have met several Ethiopians and loved everyone of them, great people. Also Ethiopian coffee can't be beat.

Us Somalis will always protect our beautiful sea in any means. American/European need to stop exploiting our sea such as illegal fishing and cargoes going through our sea without paying taxes.
The closing statement is so true! I heard very good Italian rap, Algerian, French... even Chinese! There is good art from every corner of the earth, American just happens to be the one that gets most promotion.

What a lie you told here.

And not all of them were/are fishermen. Just Somalis seeing an income opportunity.
Nope, they didn't even have nets before westerners gave them that tech. No way did they have this fishing paradise full of peace and love and freedom. If not for forigners stopping them they would still be enslaving each other and without forigners sending aid a good portion of the population would starve and die.

No they didn't fail to discuss it. It's like a 3 hour podcast and was definitely covered, just not in this clip
Who cares how it started? The individual decisions that people make to actively steal/kill and intimidate anyone in or near those waters count 100 times more than historical things you want to blame them on. People - pirates - are making ridiculously selfish decisions because they don't care about others at all; they deserve a .58 cent death.
