I was fortunate enough to see them in 2009, amazing performance, glad to see they seem to be getting the recognition they deserve over the last few years.
Nero's fiddle is my favorite, real - aggressive song. Love it! So much great variety amongst their catalog now though....They can be bluesy, slow, fast, just great, storytelling rock and roll. They do strive for excellence! See them live if you get a chance.
Brother. Those songs are amazing. No regrets man! Our band only covered one song in the early 90s and that was binge and purge. Whenever those first dirge like notes started the mosh began to churn..,pure passion bro and so apropos in 2017. Clutch is and always be my desert island music.
I'd like to tell my Binge and Purge story. This goes back about seventeen (or more) years. Even that long ago, Clutch was known to never play Binge and Purge anymore, because as Neil had said, people in the crowd would just get too damn violent - and I remember reading several posts on the pro-rock message board that alluded to this. Anyway, rewind to ~17 years ago in New Jersey at a place called the Birch Hill (long closed down). In the 90's and early 00's Clutch still attracted some racist bonehead types to their shows who would kind of just cause problems, especially in the pit. I distinctly remember some Nazi dudes in the mosh pit taking their shirts off after a few songs and prominently displaying their Aryan nation and swastika tattoos for all to see. One dude was about six and a half feet tall and had a giant black swastika on his chest. So these Nazis go to work kind of picking on people and starting fights for a few songs, and soon after no one is able to enjoy themselves anymore. At some point Neil says something to the effect of, "Well New Jersey, I have heard that you guys have some pretty hardcore moshpits in this state... So let's see what you can do," and the beginning notes of Binge and Purge start. The first three or so minutes of the song go without incidence. It was obvious that everyone was waiting for the heavy part. Once it kicked in the crowd erupted, and like telepathy, we all turned on the Nazi dudes at the same time. It was a total blur but by the end of the song the Nazis were on the ground and bloodied red. I distinctly remember the visual of the now-unconscious six and a half foot tall swastika dude being carried out by like three bouncers with a trail of blood leaking onto the floor from his face. Done and done. To this day I like to think that Clutch saw these Nazis bullying everyone and played B&P on purpose to amp the crowd up and give us a chance to retake the pit. A historic moment in my show-going career. Thanks for reading.
Thank you my CLUTCH ELDER. That kind sir was beautiful & glad they got what they deserved. I’m totally copying pasting this to my clutch groups on Facebook
Transnational is something special to alot of us 49 to 50ish adults. Still gets me pumped when playing it. I think the first 3 Clutch albums are my favorites hands down. It was a crazy fun time being in your early 20's then and catching Clutch shows in the mid 90's. If i had a time machine.....
Well said Neil, although I still enjoy listening to that album. I totally get it, I'm just so grateful to have been a fan of Clutch since 1994 and was lucky enough to see you live then. And blessed to see you evolve into one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Thank you to Clutch for staying honest and true to the fans and to themselves 🤘🙏🤘
The song isn't anywhere near the top of my list for Clutch songs. I've heard them play it a half dozen times in the '90s and it was obnoxious only because of people like you.
All my friends were huge clutch fans after listening to "Transnational..." and "Clutch". You could tell "Clutch" was bluesier but we were all still on board. When "Elephant Riders" came out, we all had to come to terms with the fact that Clutch was evolving. "The Soapmakers" and "Rites Of Spring" still felt like what we were used to but, it really did feel like a different band. It broke some of our hearts that they lost that angst. "Juggernaut" is still one of my favorite angry Clutch songs.
I saw them play Binge and Purge in '94. At 150 lbs, I noped my way out of that mosh pit for that song....came back for the rest and then for Sepultura.
@@labproductions I actually have ripped all my hi-8 tapes to digital. Bunch of old home movies from the 90s and early aughts. I still have 2 cameras that play rhose tapes. I live outside of Tampa now.
It’s still one of my favorite songs ever, but I’m never upset when I don’t hear it because I can understand why, and besides, songs about crab cakes and Mr. Givens’ angst are much more entertaining.
I love that song, and the whole album, but I get why they don't play it. People grow and change and the emotions that help create something fade away. We have the album, the emotion is there, now we have new emotions and new songs. Keep up the good work!
I respect that but,😅 binge and purge is the $hit brother😊.❤ Love ya Neil, hell i love everyone one of you guys. As a band you are the binge and the purge to rock n roll❤😊
And right there is the difference of REAL metal and that stuff which he refers to as showbiz (you know, the bands which are made and labeled to fit the taste of the mainstream to generate and provide financial liquidity mainly for the others but not the artists). I think that is also the thing, which holds the metal community together. Its always heart blood in the work and you do not sell yourself to a trend.
I'm glad I got to enjoy the early ride with these guys (60 shows or so over a 15 year period), but their last 3 albums are just not the same band I enjoyed when I was a younger man. They were just better then compared to the same sounding/redundant stuff they are releasing now. Never thought I's say it, but Clutch these days just bores me. Wish them all the best, but I moved on several years ago...
I see this song as making fun of the guy who wants to fight everybody instead of trying to get laid. Maybe that wasnt the intended meaning, but its still a badass song.
Imagine yourself laying on the slab and you cant move because your completely parylized so these guys are all basically torturibg you on this slab but instead of being fearful and screaming for mercy to god your singing this song to egg them on lol
Saw them play it April 27, 2024. Earthworm as well. Probably the 20th show I've attended, and never heard either one live. It was good to hear them, but yeah, anticlimactic.
I get what you're saying Neil. However, that song and album are awesome and you shouldn't be ashamed of or despise a body of work that set the standard for alot of bands.
I get what he is saying... its hard to fake anger.. like Corey Taylor does or whatever.. some millionaire up there singing songs he wrote when he was 21 and blacked out drunk.. still. They need to play more of their old hits. Its really annoying.. its like going to see Metallica and they don't play anything of their first few albums.
This is a rock star. That is how you do an interview and formulate a true answer from the heart. These guys are smart. But I'm still angry and I'm 39 lol! Lucky fucks made millions and it cooled their jets. I suppose it happens.
However it reflects our hearts...especially now...we need a release dude....rather release in the pit with B&P....rats and passive restraints recent sounds not too angry...what gives man....play the song make us happy...its not about you
I can't speak for anyone else but I wanna hear a mix of old and new I don't care if you wrote it when you were 19 or not I was 19 when I bought it and I'm not talking about just Binge and purge.
+Brian Chicano you may not have understood the question. For almost two decades, fans have relentlessly screamed to hear this song from the crowd. It was more of what made this phenomenon occur and what was their take on it. If you listen to transnational then psychic back to back, the evolution of the sound is clearly evident. They haven't made any additional pummeling, frat rock fist fight anthems since. It only makes sense they don't want to continue to play them.
I dig and understand 100%. We stopped playing songs off our earlier stuff too. I understand bands change and evolve good for Clutch and the fans of there new stuff I don't want no problems
+Brian Chicano on the other side, I would love to hear some of the early stuff again. ER, jam room, those records are packed with gems. Would love to see them kinda pull out an oldie every now and then. One where they wouldn't have to pretend their pissed off. There's plenty of them!
And that is why they are one of the greatest bands around. It isn't about show business, it's about the music and playing it with feeling.
Kat Harmon is everyone a sociopath now?
I was fortunate enough to see them in 2009, amazing performance, glad to see they seem to be getting the recognition they deserve over the last few years.
@@leomccloskey I saw them in 2009 also. They were great!
Transnational is an aggressive album. They mellowed out after Elephant Riders. Bands evolve... music and message evolves. I'm good with it.
I'm good with it too, just don't be ashamed of or afraid to- play songs from your past that fans want to hear.
Who’s here after they played it live
I was not expecting it at Richmond but holy hell, it was a damn cool surprise!!
I saw them play it in wilmington de 2 weeks ago and it was awesome
They just played it last night in Pensacola (May 13,2024)
I've seen them play it back in the day. They used to be regulars at the Machine Shop in Flint Michigan. They made an underrated double album there.
The song that got me into Clutch.
My "Binge and Purge" Clutch song that I'm chasing for a live version someday is Bottoms Up, Socrates.
my fave band forever in my soul
I saw them play this song in around 93 or 94 in Tulsa, OK. They opened up for Prong.
Nero's fiddle is my favorite, real - aggressive song. Love it! So much great variety amongst their catalog now though....They can be bluesy, slow, fast, just great, storytelling rock and roll. They do strive for excellence! See them live if you get a chance.
Love this response. Love that they care enough to tell us the truth about it. Clutch rules, screw the haters.

And in the jungle, retched jungle
They say the lion eats tonight
And all around it is a coliseum
Dripping with a voracious appetite !
I got to see it with pantera at mi state fairgrounds and pantera played domination all the way through
Saw em on the Transnational Speedway tour- they were great- and have only gotten better.....

I like a band that wears Weyland Yutani badges in a video about horseshoe crabs.
Some of the best shows were at studio 1 in Newark NJ in the early 90s also saw them at the limelight in NYC opening up for Skidrow
I want to hear them play Piledriver or Impetus live if Neil is up for it.
They still play Impetus quite often
I know Transnational came out in 93, but in retrospect, Binge & Purge seems like a prescient satire of the nu metal genre.
Wow now that I think of it that makes no sense at all
The song that got me into you guys. Still imo the greatest
Guild of Mute Assassins, Please.

Great song, and I LOVE Transnational Speedway League, but they've gotten so much better musically since that album.
Greatest band on earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Id like to know how Clutch deals with groupies.
Needs an update as they're playing it at every show now, haha!
Can we at least get Transnational on vinyl 👌
I saw b&p live ... twice. The second time, I was well into my 30s, and while fun, not the same as when you’re 21 years old and drunk.
True Rockstar!
