  • Welcome back to Fret Not! What a special episode I have for you today, the Brian May interview(!) which took place at the end of this summer (2023). We talked about AI and its potentially dangerous applications, Brian's childhood and how he found his way to the guitar, being famous as a shy person and how that fame has changed with the internet and social media, we talk about Brian's role in the scientific community, his experiences with imposter syndrome, parenting and a load more!
I couldn't not leave in playing a small part of Barrios' confesion for Bri, and his playing Love of my Life for me, I'm sure there will be at least some copyright issues, but it was such an incredible moment, just sat there on his carpet listening to the man himself playing a song I grew up listening to on the radio!

I know, right? He seems especially vulnerable in this interview. Not fully "present" throughout, but there are also moments when he comes back into himself, and you can see his joy then. He was ashamed of not having friends or a girlfriend.... omg 😢❤ I can't with this conformity-obsessed culture, lonely people used to be seen as unique and in touch with God, now loneliness is a so-called "disease" that needs its own government strategy. How about the better strategy of not demonising it in the first place, allowing people to make the connections they feel attuned with?
I knew there must be a reason behind his constant mentioning of how he is "pals" with people, of how he knows everyone, 6 degrees of separation lol...

This is possibly the best interview featuring a famous artist I ever saw. Brian is such a unique, humble and intelligent human being. And then they pull his guitar out, this legendary piece of knitting needle and fireplace that played on the most famous records and concerts, and they do not even mention it. I could cry....

This video has moved me like no other. I've not heard of Rosie prior to watching this- she is very intelligent, thoughtful and communicative as an interviewer which lead to the most insightful, honest and wholly relaxed interview I've seen with Brian. He is a Gentleman of the old school with a high emphasis on compassion and respect to all (excepting trolls which I back him 100%) and Rosie seems to be cast in the same mould- which totally delights me. Rosie your interview was a delight; as was your guitar playing. My deepest thanks and appreciation to you both.

What blows me away about this interview is not just how incredible and fascinating Brian May is, but that these two people from different countries and different generations could meet and form such a friendship over their mutual love of music through the Internet. They spent some time at the beginning talking the doom and gloom of certain technologies, but here's an example of a friendship that likely wouldn't have happened even 10 years ago. I'm 55 now and hindsight says that without the music of Queen life would have been so much harder to navigate - this magnificent group helped with the down times and celebrate the good times. I wish you every happiness and can assure you that in your music choice at least... you're on the right track! 😀

This was wonderful. I was in my teens when Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" came out.. I remember how both the song and the band had people talking... They really were sooo completely different. This interview had me feeling so many emotions, envy of Rosie's youth, the optimism that she exudes and the zest for the road ahead, plus that wonderful happy smile. I could almost feel that Brian was feeling the same way, and that he would miss her when she left. No I don't mean anything untoward.. I simply mean a reminder of how I once was full of optimism and full of hope, but also it evoked a feeling of what time I wasted on nonsense. The internet gets a bad rap at times and rightly in some cases, but it also gives lovely people like Rosie and many more young people, the platform to dispel the notion that the young are all wrapped up in themselves. "Just call me Bri" I love it.. He is a class human and not a bad guitarist either :-)

His passion for music, his honesty about the loneliness of being an only child, his self-doubt in the face of being widely regarded with such esteem continues to give a template on how to deal with life and even after almost 40 years of his music being in my life I still learn something new..and one of those things this time is your music which I will be diving 'headlong' into (forgive the totally intended pun).

Brian May has always been a role model for me. Awesome guitarist and songwriter - most of my favourite Queen songs were written by him - but also super intelligent and kind to animals. I was lucky enough to talk to him in email about our mutual disdain for foxhunting, and he was lovely.

Brilliant and caring!
I could sit and chat with him for hours without being the slobbering idiot fan that is so annoying!
Love this!! Definitely one of the best interviews ever.

Wonderful conversation with a Rock Legend and yet an ordinary and humble person. I just cannot understand (when he talks about his social media) who would insult and disrespect Brian May?. A man that all he’s done in his professional career as a musician is to bring joy to millions of people through his music.
But there are so many individuals out there looking for attention and saying things they wouldn’t dare to say in person. Yes, don’t ever waste your time and energy on these trolls, my dear Brian.
Thank you for this interview!, Rosie!. 🙏🏼🤗

What a marvelous interview. How lucky are you to have that kind of time with one of the greats. I'm always struck by Brian's attitude about everything. He has an innocence about his curiosities. He reminds me of a child that wants to learn about everything he sees and explores things he does not know but wants to know. Just marvelous. And, I would be a fool to not mention your playing. Just, beautiful. Your song took me on a little journey. Thank you for that.

Bravi! This was such a fantastic, deep, heartfelt conversation. Truly, Dr. Sir Bri is such a sweetheart, a tremendous, deep, wise, funny, down to earth, and relatable gentleman! Of all the words in any language that can be used to describe him, "boring" never has, nor ever will be one of them! Oftentimes, I think that my overall admiration and respect for him is as high as it can possibly get for someone. Yet, occasionally I surprisingly find myself upgrading my overall opinion and respect for him! This was especially one of those times! There were a lot of moments where I wanted to jump in and give him a hug!

Great interview with all the right space thank you. I wasn't a serious Queen fan until my 1 year old son (in 1980) saw Queen on the TV and began his musical career by building mic stands out of stickle bricks ( poor mans lego) and strutting around like Freddie, As a guitarist he made me learn Brians bits🙂. The first one was Love of my life so it was a trip down memory lane for me to see Brian play it at the end. I like Brians humanity he seems to me to be a real person. This is the first time I have seen you (old and out of touch you see) but I loved your playing and your interview so Thanks👍

That was a very enjoyable interview. I’ve been following Brian‘s career for years pretty much since I was 12 years old and I’m 52 now. In 2017 I interviewed Brian for a radio show in Montreal that came out of McGill University that was dedicatedI to the environment and animals. And I proposed to his business contact that I do an interview that was just about animals and he said yes. And it turned out great and he was such a gracious and kind man. And I can see that he really appreciates your approach to this podcast beyond being admirer of your playing. I I was touched listening to him talk about how he still has imposter syndrome today. I cannot think of another rockstar out there who is as honest and comfortable with being vulnerable as Brian May. He is a one of a kind. Being a dad of two daughters I also really could relate to his comments about parenting and how they don’t teach you anything about parenting in school. So your questions were great and I think you should be very proud of this interview and this exchange! All the best!

It's so refreshing to see someone as respected as Brian May being interviewed as a real person. 99% of musicians interviewed are asked about their guitars, amps, pedals, set up, etc., but you, Rosie, have shown Sir Brian / Dr. May as a person, & as such we have seen a very interesting insight into his character. And what an exceptionally nice chap he is. Well done, Rosie, & thank you!
PS - your playing is beautiful, by the way.
