  • Welcome back to the woodshop! Today we are continuing the progress in our soon-to-be retail space! There are a few exposed dimensional beams in this space that support the third story of our building. Because these beams are pretty ugly, I wanted to change the look of the space by wrapping them in white oak, making them larger and much classier. This also gave the beams a much more substantial appearance as well as brought us closer to the vision of the end result! Wrapping existing beams or creating faux beams for a space is an easy way to really change the look and style of any room! With a wide variety of lumber available you can also accomplish this project pretty inexpensively and on your own with simple tools. We chose to use white oak since we will have other finishing elements in the same material, however making a DIY faux beam in something at your local hardware store like pine, and staining it whatever color you desire is an awesome and cheap way to obtain a similar result! If this was helpful and inspiring in any way, please hit that Like and Subscribe button! We will continue to document the process of getting this whole retail store space transformed!

Great video, super useful. How do you blend in the joint in the beam above the post so its invisible? We have 15' spans on our ceiling- we want to do this, while avoiding having to buy the super long expensive dimensional lumber. Thanks again for the great video. Looks amazing.

Thank you for watching! Thankfully having the vertical seams where the but joints are on this above each post makes sense as far as how it would be for, however if your trying to blend long pieces of wood you might want to try scarf joining them before cutting the miters to assemble your box beams. This would allow you to get to the length you're looking for! I hope this answers your question!

Hi there! Can you tell me more about the odie's oil with pigment you're going to finish it with? Will that leave it looking its natural color, or will it deepen the color of the wood? Thanks!

Nice !that wall that is next to the beams needs to get a wood veneered pattern on it cause it is horrible but that's just my opinion. Cheers.

It has only been primed, It needs texture, more primer then it's final paint color. This wall will be significantly covered by art so I wanted it to remain very plain
