Happy New Years! Looks like a great partnership going with AFCO! Man, those turned out beautifully!! (Even the one you had to fudge around looks perfect!) Can't wait to see the railings go up!
You never fail to amaze me: 1) your research before making major decisions, 2) rounding up vendors with outstanding and visionary products, 3) finding sub-contractors that are highly skilled and are proud of their work, 4) your self discipline on focus, focus, 5) your wife/life partner - who matches you in smartness & hard work and finally, your reality insight. Enjoy your mountain high quality homestead. Your family created it! We got to watch!
You could make some really cool candle lanterns from the cutoffs for citronella candles or the like. Some for setting on tables and others for hanging. Those came out so nice! They look really good and are a perfect color match. Great job!
Another thing the ends can be used for is to hide the pots of plants, or they could be used as planters if they had a bottom installed. Best wishes for the new year.
I was just thinking about children and the height of the porch when you mentioned not using the horizontal railing. Smart to think of that and prevent accidents.
Looks like a million bucks! Water will find its way inside the aluminium cover and probably there will also be condensation, so if I were you, I'd leave at least one side of the bottom uncaulked, so that it can run out.
Thanks for the heads up on the cable railing. Have a friend with toddler grandkids that visit quite often and he has that type of railing and I'll bet he never thought of that.
Wow, that is looking some kind of good! The idea you used to fix the "twisted post" worked perfect and they all look as straight as can be (despite the twist inside). I absolutely love the way the color looks and you can't tell it is aluminum. Great product to investigate, thanks for sharing the info and the install! Great work and craftsmanship as usual!
The Afco post wrap looks like a very good solution to ugly wood. Question, do you think the aluminum when warm to cold will condensate on the inside ? If so sealing the bottom might not be a good idea.
We have enjoyed watching your journey. You saved us money and time on our homestead by watching things you changed. Thanks for sharing your journey. Wish you and your family the very best..
What a great blessing, your new home! Those neighbors did you a huge favor by pushing you out of your comfort zone. You are better off with the new start. When life gives you lemons 💪👏
I have no idea why I thought the porch railings were going to stay the same I love them they are the topping of the porch but the color is what I love on it and the house I'm here waiting no more anxious then you guys lol
Wow.. massive difference.. it's really looking so good guys!! Happy New Year.. 2022 is going to be your year.. you will be moved into your new home !! YAY guys!!! I can't even imagine what the video's will be the end of 2022.. maybe even have some grass in the front yard.. :))
Hi guys Ooo wee now that's a house!! I can't wait to see it when you all make it a home with lots of love cooking !! What time is dinner?? It's so hard to remember that you guys move and started over what a build man!! Wonderful the love and care put in to a house to build your home!!! I just to that you guys for sharing and teaching along the way it's been so great seeing it come to life!!
Wow that came out looking amazing. Better than I thought possible with such a product. Hmmm, guess I know what to look into now. Thanks for sharing the install. Happy New Year!
Looks awesome! Glad to see you use a buffer on that Treated to aluminum contact. Have seen boat transoms if someone uses regular pressure treated and not marine plywood totally destroy aluminum transom. Holes everywhere.
Here in Canada, the temperature gets much lower and has a wider range than where you are, so aluminum is not as popular due to the expansion and contraction that sometimes reveals seams and gaps ;) Your application looks great :)
Yep. I've seen covering wood posts with aluminum turn into a disaster some years down the road. I think even Mike Holmes show had an entire sub division that all had that issue with relatively new homes. Metal with the different expansion rates than concrete water gets in it can't get out and then there will be hidden rot at the base.
Ohhh that looks good, I like it... another one to check off the list. The house is looking beautiful 🤎 and it was nice to see Jaime even for a bit.. in the background 😉😊
I know the railings you are about to install will be around the porch but do you intend to also put a banister (or whatever it is called) next to those beautiful stairs? As an elderly person I could not possibly make those stairs without holding on to something. Believe me when you are old you will want to hold on to something going up the stairs.
Historically the only type of wood preservative you could get for construction lumber was a cupperic-oxide solution (copper), either painted on the surfaces or infused via pressure treating. Now with all these "safer" chemicals, copper can't even touch our pressure treated boards? Crazy. Great video as always.
A suggestion, drill a weep hole in the bottom of your post trims… I would not have sealed the bottoms, any water that make it’s way in the top of the posts will now fill up the post trims.
The bases you can glue on with urethane sealant. You don't need the JB Weld. OSI works well and comes in bronze. Caulk behind it, at the joint, then across the top and the bottom. Put masking tape on it until it sets up and it's good to go.
Nice job, the material looks solid. I would suggest leaving a weep hole at the base so any water from condensation has an escape route. That aluminum will probably condensate in the sunny areas and the water needs an escape route.
Interesting product. Two questions... 1) are you going to drill a drain hole at the base of each post? You can be 100% certain that water will eventually get in, the trick is to ensure it can get out. 2) Did you consider fitting only three sides of the post cladding before putting the handrails on to allow access for packing and general adjustment?
You exhaust me. Like no joke. I feel like a bum everytime y'all upload🤣 I'm stuffing my face while you're gettin' it...but man! The house is a beast!!!
I am about to install these and I thought hte JB weld was a good idea. Wouldn't you want to JB weld the top caps while they rest on the bottom ones, then slide them up into positions to screw them as a surround to top of column? Seems like it would be hard to get the mitered corners aligned with screwing them two pieces separately. Do you think that is reasonable approach?
Just curious why didn't you go with aluminum soffit and ceiling on porch, dollars or availability, j b weld on bases something new, where did you get that idea
Posts look good, have to agree on those doors, I think they will really look fine when Jaimie is done with them! getting close to done I'm thinking! can't wait to see you moved in! still waiting on Kitchen counters? or did I miss that?
I want to do this but I’m trying to decide if just priming & and a good exterior paint for the post is a better option than using aluminum wrap. Do u have a suggestion?
Hi, I have a question about porch posts. I need to replace my porch floor (w/pvc boards) and posts (w/cedar). Do the post rest on top of the TnG boards with solid blocking underneath or do they need to go through the floor and rest on the brick pillars? Thanks so much! Btw, you are a fantastic teacher!
@@Guildbrookfarm thank you for your reply! So in my case, with the brick pillars coming up few feet - I would just drill and install post brackets and fasten the cedar posts on to the brackets, correct? Should I wrap the bottom of the cedar posts with any flashing tape to protect them from moisture or just seal the bottoms of the posts?
Porch posts/columns that hold up a roof need to be on footings. Railing posts bolt to the decking with blocking beneath. No need to treat cedar but I would use a good oil based penetrating stain.
so glad you did not go with the wire railing. I think it is ugly as I don't like the modern look. love this look as it matches the rest of the house. have a Happy New Year and stay safe and warm.
Happy New Years! Looks like a great partnership going with AFCO! Man, those turned out beautifully!! (Even the one you had to fudge around looks perfect!) Can't wait to see the railings go up!
I wish we lived in a world where you could invite us over to have a beverage with you and Jamie on your new front porch!
Now that is a house well put together!! Happy New Years to Y'all. May your next years in your beautiful home be filled with Joy, Peace and Love.

WOW! Those post wraps worked out really well and match color scheme perfectly! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Loving the color choices. It looks so much more like your completing the house, although the I know you still have a lot to do.
Wow! It looks amazing! Love the color.
Since you sealed the bottoms, how did you(will you) seal the tops of the posts in case any rain drives in and hits the tops?
Looks awesome! Glad to see you use a buffer on that Treated to aluminum contact. Have seen boat transoms if someone uses regular pressure treated and not marine plywood totally destroy aluminum transom. Holes everywhere.
Looking really great -- nice job. 3M VHB double sided acrylic foam tape also works great sticking things together.
Looks great! Your almost ready to move in.. huh! Can't wait to see how things go once you've been able to start living in side.

Yes

Of course. Its required by building codes also.
Wow your house is looking great and a beautiful view.
Your place looks fab and you guys are rockin this. I love the color of the trim and posts . Everything looks so good. Such great taste

I think it’s more about the copper in the board reacting with aluminium. Aluminium can be pretty reactive

Yes a drain hole will be hidden behind the base trim. I hadn't thought about only doing 3 sides and then fitting the railing. That's a great idea.
The house is looking good. If you want to see something really badly twisted look up Chesterfield Crooked Spire.
Looks really good so far cant wait to see next part Happy New Year from UK.

Hardie board

How much does the 6x6x8 wrap labor cost approximately ?

I used aluminum so I never have to repaint or replace rotted wood, and the color doesn't fade.

Happy New Year V!
What if the post twists?
Why didn’t you wrap the blocking isn’t that aluminum touching wood there ?
I don't think that the blocking has been chemically treated so it should be fine.
The blocking isn’t pressure treated.
Classy!
How much are these post? I went to their website but can’t find a pricing
You'll probably have to get a quote from a dealer.
🇳🇱Happy New Year 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍀
Same to you!
Do you plan on building houses for your children on site?
Possibly. Planning on building quite a few things here.
How many sq ft is the home? TIA
About 2k
Good Choice just saying
Looks great, less talky talky, more worky worky..
It's not easy building a home and he runs a channel...he's supposed to talk.
Bet this guy does more worky worky than 10 of the commenters in this thread put together.
You outdo yourself every video.
👍👍👍👍👍
Wouldn't it be less expensive to just buy aluminum columns originally.
Would not have the strength to hold up porch roofs.
They actually would. These are rated for 20,000lbs of structural load each when used with a top and bottom plate.
😎🤙🦅
