Apparently the black smoke is supposed to represent the society or like the media and public. It represents how the public has a particular vision about Kpop and the Kpop idols, and how the Kpop industry sometimes brings down upcoming artists and engulfs them in darkness and hardships at a young age. So the smoke pulling down on Heeseung in the beginning of the MV is basically representing the hardships Kpop idols have to go through. They try their best to pull themselves up and come out of the darkness being new and young, upcoming idols. Well this is what I think about the black smoke. Not sure 'bout the other theories out there.
I thought it was related to the storyline rather than social criticism but like I have no clue what’s going on, I got left behind mentally like 3 mvs ago with the ENHYPEN storyline 😂

The way i started watching you back when i was really into why don't we (still like them but not that hardcore stan if you know what i mean) and i watched like all of your videos of them, and then when you reacted to mic drop by bts i just thought "why not" and clicked cause at that time i was probably bored or smth and wanted to watch something, and since that day i'm a fulltime kpop stan and i don't think i'd be that without your video, also we kinda became kpop stans around the same time so that's also kinda cool, limelights together, armys together, kpop multistans together, sounds kinda cheesy saying it but y'know🤣
If you see it then, whole album itself follows the concept of vampire. On this vedio too they used that. The light shining above niki and him suffering represents the vampire's struggle in light. And of course the dark smoke represents the society and their struggles which they have to face being a vampire. That smoke is swallowing them however they are running to escape from it. They r running for their own survival. And the old mansion is the place where they hide in as an ordinary student and the modern places, those show the passage of time as they being vampire never aged. This concepts are all interconnected thus its difficult to identify and understand. Have u seen the bts MTV from hyyh era ? There u can see music vedio portraying story however everything is related! And at the end one full version of story comes up called as # save me( hope u all have read it in webtoon). Yes, so this album of enha too is an story, everything is related and there is their webtoon as well which shows their struggles as a vampire.
7:00 I actually can relate, when I was around 10 years old I had a phobia like this...it wasn’t like this just to get anxiety, I would easily faint and cry if I saw how an organ works..but by passing time fortunately I’m ok with that
They mixed the old fashion style and modern style because of the story line that they follow just like in Given-Taken and Drunk Dazed. Because they are vampires, they lived trough different eras in time.

Rewatching your ENHYPEN reactions (just because) and I've seen this MV so many times but just a thought (since you're a Brit) - do you get Brighton vibes from the architecture? Brighton seems to fit the mix of old Victorian (the Doric columns) + the neon lights (which are so 80s) - it gives the background that tired/faded look (not sure why they would want that concept as the set background). All of the sets for this MV were built, including the pool. I give a lot of credit to the costume designer for putting together the various Austro-Hungarian Napoleonic military outfits for the UP concepts that were also used in the 'Drunk-Dazed' and 'Fever' MVs. I do agree the cinematography is just gorgeous with the background lighting, the sparklers, the gold confetti, the specific lens used to shoot the face glitter (so Bowie-esque).
Basically Sammy, we still dunno what's going on with enhypen either, but HYBE is creating a storyline with them ad it's Called "DARK MOON with ENHYPEN" . What we got so far is that they were invited to a CARNIVAL and got involved with some kind of ritual that transformed them into vampires. Based on the MV from Drunk-dazed I'm personally theorizing that the Black Smoke is the magic that turns them into vampires (but that could be wrong, we'll be making sense of it as more MVS and content for DARK MOON pops up! :3) HYBE started creating storylines with BTS (The NOTES), they also connected TXT's stories under the title of "STAR SEEKERS with TXT", there was one with the girl group GFRIEND too (that I don't follow so I can't comment), and of course now ENHYPEN has their own storyline, right off the bat with the first INTRO video. Those storyline also always have one foot in reality, incorporating real world events, or situations that the members of the group are going through, and of course adding in some social criticism but all in the form of a fantastical story!
