I buried my wife a week ago. She was 21 years my senior, people made us feel like our love was a crime. I know the original was about something else, but this cover hit us like a gut punch in a god way, it made us realize that everyone else was wrong and that love is always right. We loved each other like mad. I gave up the thought of my own children because I was, and still am, madly in love. I listen to this on repeat to try to muster some lust for life after her. Thank you Bare Naked Ladies for defending our love, even if that was not your intent.
Thank you for leaving me in tears. My wife loved hat song, with you guys driving through Scarborough in the back of the pickup. Three nights ago, was the anniversary of your show in Oshawa that she was supposed to have gone to, but she wound up in St. Mike’s due to her dialysis fistula causing problems. I told the guys about it and they sent her their well wishes to her. I told Ed how his neighbour at the cottage, Kkan and Chris were my wife’s godparents. With the help of a friend of ours from New York, they sent her an autographed picture of them all. Well, the reason that this sign brings tears to my eyes, is that we lost her this past August at 46 years old and both our girls have the same genetic kidney disease that their mother had. 😔 But we raised them right and they are both BNL fanatics like their mom and me. Rest in pease my angel Nancy. 😢
i'm sorry for your loss and i pray they don't end up in going away far to young like sadly your wife did. but that was very kind of the guys that they did that
My condolences on the loss of your wife, IamTedV. My husband, too, has genetic kidney disease, but is tremendously fortunate to have had a transplant. Unfortunately, and both of our kids have also inherited it. Also unfortunately, they are not BNL fans.
I still get shivers from this song when I hear the lyric "gotta kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight" Words that can help us fight for change. Thank you #barenakedladies
Jonathan Goodman I saw him live accidentally at a folk festival because he was on before Ani DiFranco and it remains one of the best shows I’ve ever been privileged to see
Jonathan Goodman When 2 lovers really love, there’s nothing there but the suddenly compact universe of skin and breath and hair... priceless and equally timeless imho., peace to this interdependent world of humanity
Thank you Bruce Cockburn for writing an incredibly timeless song! Thank you BNL for that first amazing video many years ago! Thanks for this latest uplifting version guys! Big respect to Jim from the Freestyle Frisbee guys on the hill🤙
"Nothin worth having comes without some kind of fight... Gotta kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight". Thank you BNL and Bruce Cockburn. Prophetic lyrics in these strange and scary times. Stay Home, people. We can all contribute by staying apart. For the sake of those you love and to keep our Frontline Workers Safe...Stay Home ! 👍👏👏❤️🇨🇦
Thanks guys for bringing some brightness into the world right now! Love how Tyler’s whole family got into it. Let’s have more of this! Be safe and keep on keeping on!
BNL- I discovered you in 1991, just when my family broke up and moved from Canada to the US. You have been and will always be a big part of my life and my identity. Thank you for continuing to provide inspiration and clarity. Much love.
A song that passes the test of time, whether played by 5 guys crammed in the back of a pickup, or 4 guys spread out and brought together by the magic of the internet.
This song bring me back 25 years easily, BNL....you guys are simply amazing. One of the best Canadian groups, and a lifetime of memories with your music. Thank you.
I remember driving around in the summer of 1991 listening to a free cassette of Million dollars mailed to my school's student's union. Booked The BNL a few months later for $500 for frosh week. 😄 its been true love ever since. Thanks fellas.
What an incredible performance! Digging everyone's parts, but special respect for Ed's isolation look and Tyler's "MY HOUSE IS MY INSTRUMENT" improvised percussion!
Early in their career they performed at the World Scout Jamboree in Thunder Bay. I loved telling Scouters from out of nation how excited I was to see the Barenaked Ladies live on stage and watch them try to process that in their head
I have to say that you never stop amazing us. The first time was in Portland Me. promoting the first album. You all didn’t want to leave the stage until you thanked everyone for coming and you all stood at the front of the stage shaking hands with everyone who wanted to shake hands with you. I knew at that point that you were going to change the world and you did. Thank you for your fantastic love and energy on and off your stage. 👍😎🙏🍻🎼🎶☃️🎉
Canadians at their best! Amazing and timely song by Bruce Cockburn and soulfully submitted by the Ladies...how profoundly relevant and welcome at this time!
Many thanks to Bruce Cockburn for the lyrics and music. Thanks to BNL for Kick at the Darkness, my happy introduction to BNL way back in 1991. Can't wait to see you guys back on tour some time in the future; when I do it'll be my twelfth time seeing you guys live here on the West Coast. What a ride its been! And thanks Stephen, wherever you are, for your unforgettable lead vocal on this great BNL hit, and so many others, back in the day. God I love this song. A big thanks to all the essential workers in Canada and elsewhere. The governments at all levels, the military, police, firemen, EMT s, security guards, the doctors and nurses, care home workers, pharmacists, grocery store clerks, home care workers, bus drivers and the business leaders who've shifted their manufacturing focus to make more respirators or PPEs. Those brave people who have held their communities together this last month and will continue to keep us safe, warm and fed. And than ks to the vast majority of Canadians who have heeded the stay in place orders and did their social distancing and hand washing. Now if only we could get the last few percent, the most ignorant Gen Zers, to do the same ... And a special thanks to all the artists and entertainers who have made this enforced isolation more bearable, by donating their time and posting videos such as this. Hopefully when we come out the back side of this deadly pandemic, we'll forever be less selfish, and more grateful for all the many blessings we enjoy. And remember to appreciate all the little things in life which add colour to our often sad world. Hang in there everybody. It's gonna be a long slog.
Jesus guys, this has me also in tears. This was the song that had me discover your music. I hate to bring up a thorn (as I know he was a thorn and some poison) but what about Stephen Page? Time tends to heal "most" wounds. It was great to see you all on the Junos. But hasn't enough years gone by? I know what it is like to be asked to swallow pains from the past. But time also tends to make us appreciate things more. Just thought I would throw my sentiments into the void. I am a Scarborough boy, born and raised and still remember many of the locations you shot this video.
This is the first time I've smiled or laughed in a week; thank you so much Ed, Kev, Ty and Jim! Please do more of these so you can stay safe and we can stay sane during quarantine. I think you've found the cure for the blockade blues! I love you guys for thinking of us.
Totally made my day here in the UK, I fell in love with you while serving in Iraq back in 2003. I had tickets to see you guys in the Albert Hall next month, but I knew you wouldn’t let us down and leave us without some magic! Thank you guys xx
I'm from Scarborough, even went to Mowat for a year (not at the same time as Jim and Andy though). I love this song and always loved the video, too. I do have to say that I miss Stephen's voice being part of the group. Still a fan all these years later. 💜
This is 100% true. I got married during COVID. June 13th 2020. Small ceremony in my parents backyard. We both agreed that this would be our first dance song. Here I am, 3 and change years later, listening again, and just feeling the perfect love, and the best day of my life.
Who remembers, just before they became famous, Toronto city council banning the group from playing at festivities because their name was politically incorrect?
It was only the mayor, June Rowland (prompted by a staffer) and they were only banned from playing Nathan Phillips Square in front of city hall on NYE '91. The incident pushed their demo tape to outsell MJ, Genesis and U2 in Toronto record stores. The ban was overturned 2 months later.

so sorry for your loss - all the best from across the pond :)
Kevin plays piano, Ed plays guitar, Jim plays bass and Tyler plays house
As any good drummer does. Or any bad drummer, for that matter.

Props to Bruce Cockburn, who wrote this beautiful ditty.
(smiles) Now you just mindf**ked the millennials.
I was going to say something about him too, thanks for reminding everyone!
I looked for the credit, and it isn't here. Kind of disappointing.
There is a great live Coburn version out there too. I can’t find it anymore though.

I wish this composer needed no introduction, but he is criminally overlooked in the U.S..
The profound, inimitable Bruce Cockburn. Seek him out !!

Remember the kid show Franklin (the turtle)? That was my children's introduction to the talent of Bruce Cockburn and it didn't stop there!
One of my favorite singer songwriters. Agree is criminally underrated.
No time like the present to keep on kickin' at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.
This world needs more Bruce Cockburn protest songs, especially down south.
One of the greatest lines in any song, any where. Love that lyric.
