    Their most underrated album imho.
    Fun fact: This was their first album without longtime drummer David Silveria. So they got other drummers on the record, most notably Terry Bozzio, which explains the different sounding percussion. Also this albums tour cycle was where they picked up their current drummer Ray Luzier who I think is a very worthy replacement.

    • @BewaretheCherryWaves
      @BewaretheCherryWaves Рік тому +4

      I think Ray majorly elevates their live show and brings that level of skill that they definitely needed after they got a bit stale since SYOTOS. But I agree this one is underrated thanks completely for being the experimental album. I personally loved this one from the start.

      @@BewaretheCherryWaves I personally love each and every Korn album, even my least favorites, getting better the more I listened to them. This one is my favorite of the albums without Head, it's experimental and creative as hell. Ever Be having a rock opera style, Killing having death metal influences, Bitch We Got a Problem, Love and Luxury, and Do What They Say having industrial vibes carried over from SYOTOS but done better, and Jonathan going all over the place moreso than ever before, arguably.
      Plus the cover is just awesome.

      @@verticalhamburger9517 David made 7 albums, SYOTOS being his last. Other things of note for how different this album is, Brooks Wackerman and JD also have drum credits. And Zac Baird, who they originally hired to tour for SYOTOS, wrote keyboard, synth, and organ parts. He also worked on the Kidnap the Sandy Claws (from The Nightmare Before Christmas) cover, JD's solo band The Simply Fucking Amazings, and Munly's Fear and The Nervous System.

    Oddly enough this was the album that got me into Korn back in the day. And I'm glad it did because it's their weirdest so from that point it was always a joy discovering their previous efforts as well as seeing them going forward. 15 years later I still think it's one of the best experiments they did. So I met Korn twice last Spring, back in 2021. (They remembered who I was when I met them for the second time which feels so surreal, being a big fan of someone who actually knows you exist) and I the first time meeting them I told them about my nephews who both love Korn (who are currently ages 9 and 6, but were 8 and 4 at the time of meeting them). They wanted to be there to meet them too, but since I weren’t I asked my nephews if there was anything they wanted me to tell ask them or tell them. So I ended up showing them a picture of both of them individually and told them their favorite Korn song + whatever it is they wanted me to specifically tell the band. They were amazed how they are fans at such a young age, and I think they were especially impressed by my younger nephew (again, age 6 now, but age 4 at the time) because the picture I showed them was him on his first day of school (4K, not kindergarten) and he was holding up a poster board consisting of stuff about him and the last part of it said “some things I love are:” and what he had beneath it was the Pokémon logo and the Korn logo. 😄 and getting to the reason why I’m sharing this story, it wasn’t anything anything major, but Jonathan had a little reaction of pleasant surprise when I told them that my younger nephew’s favorite Korn song was the song Evolution. You know because it’s really not a song you wouldn’t commonly hear someone say is their favorite.
    Obviously the reason I’m mentioning this is just because of the fact that the song comes from this album.

    I think the magic of these albums is that, in my opinion, by the time Mirror came out their sound felt a little tired and repetitive, but when See You and this album arrived they felt fresh and rejuvenated again. Especially with the help of Atticus from NIN. They took a lot more risks and didn’t really fall into the self parody that Mirror felt like. I personally believe this to be their creative peak. Not their best record (I think third best), but them at their most forward thinking.

    This is one of my favorite korn albums (typically referred to as Korn II btw)! the other one that i really really love is untouchables. and that album has a lot of hardass moments and great music writing, and it uses it's electronic elements really well. But untitled just has some of their most creative riffs and structural song writing, and i think a lot of that is because of the different drummer they had on the album, a session guy with a huge kit named terry bozzio, best known for drumming on a lot of frank zappa's albums. the drummer, david silvera's departure was a business/family decision and the electronics on this one were also done by atticus ross of NIN fame in case you were curious about why the similarity in sounds there.
    the best songs on the album IMO are ever be and love and luxury, which are both about guitarist head leaving the band because he found jesus and thought korn's material was blasphemous. head wrote a book about his life with korn, hence the opening to love and luxury, "i read your little book and, hahahahahahaha". a common theme of the album is the changes to the bands lineup of members (starting over), and they expand on that idea to be about survival in general (evolution, hold on, do what they say, i will protect you), as well as criticisms of people who live in negative codependent relationships (killing, hushabye).
    overall i think it's got great riffs, i think the moods on the album are more somber, more tragic, and maybe a little more sincere than previous albums? and i think it all really fits to korn's general repertoire. I do have heavy nostalgia though, this came out in 2007, which was the era of 12 year old me buying korn albums at the grocery store.

    I love this Album. not everyone's favorite but it came out at the right time in my life where I was going through a lot of things good and bad but a lot of change, Korn always seem to release an album exactly when I need it. This album in particular really helps me feel better.

    There were 3 still in the band. Jonathan, Munky, & Fieldy, but the Head had left after 04 tour & Drummer left after See You On The Other Side. So Munky had to do extra guitar work once again back to back albums. They got Terry Bozzio & Brooks Wackerman for drums so very different here. Terry is the 1 who plays on a huge drumset, that thing has like 50 some pieces on it lol. Next album is when u will hear the newer drummer Ray Luzier who is still there 2day after he won the audition the following year

    Contrary to some of the comments, Joey Jordison did not record any drums for this record. He only filled in on some live shows around this time period. There were a couple different session drummers as well as Jonathan Davis doing the drums on a few tracks. Ray Luzier was't in the band either until their next studio album.

    Ross Robinson comes back to produce his third album with Korn (hence the name, Korn III), he did bring back the old raw sound and squeeze out the misery in poor JD. Still, this one gets kinda buried in the discography somehow, looking forward to your opinion!

    @Molly Sanborn I have two questions if you’re reading this comment.
    *1.* Just based off the first listen, which album do you favor between this album and See You On The Other Side? With them being two back-to-back experimental albums?
    *2.* Have you ever seen any of Korn’s music videos from any of the albums you’ve made it through so far? If not you should check some out if you get a chance. And I’m not exactly suggesting that it be in the form of reaction videos, but more so just in your own free time. It might be interesting to get some visual representation of the music of theirs if you’ve made it this far without having seen any of it. Maybe not all of them because that might be a lot of videos to go through, but instead maybe take a look at their list of music videos and see if there’s any you’re most curious about.
    And adding to that one, when you review these albums, are you ever aware of which songs from the albums are the hit singles?

    “…wild fusion of stuff…” indeed. As mentioned the band was down two members at the time. Head left to find God, David left right after their previous record and for KoRn II (Untitled) they actually had a slew of session (I believe) and other famous drummers (such as Terry Bozzio) come in and fill David’s spot before finding their current drummer, Ray Luzier.

    This album was experimental for sure - not as much as Path of Totality but there’s so many different variation of sounds to this album. Only 3 OG members and Jon played a few instruments on this album. Personally I see this is a Jonathan Davis album rather than a Korn album if that makes sense. Very Queen of the Damned sounding (Jon wrote and recorded 6-7 songs on that soundtrack).

    This material was insanely cool live, it just had an incredible energy and atmosphere when it rang out in the open air, but for me the tragic thing about this album is that it really just sounds kind of flat and forgettable with time and I feel like despite all of the crazy experimentation and big names involved with the project, it just doesn't translate in to a Korn record. It sounds lost and confused. They completely buried Fieldy's bass to the point that he literally went on record stating he reused the parts on later songs since nobody heard them anyways. I only really come back to Starting Over, Evolution, and Hold On anymore if anything.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I missed the bass so much! It's a huge part of what makes Korn's music really stand out imo. I love the experimentation on this album and I generally love really electronic heavy music, but it just didn't sound like a Korn record if that makes sense.

    So this album was made as a three piece. With their drummer leaving they had 3 different drummers on this. They also played with keyboard and percussive elements, along with different structures and even instruments. If you’re interested and have time, here is a video of them making this album. ua-cam.com/video/j9P9IefCR4A/v-deo.html
    The next album is the first with their current drummer. It was produced by the same guy that produced their first two records in order to capture that old energy. It’s definitely way more aggressive in terms of the last couple.

    The minute head left those heavy hitting riffs just weren't there its like the guitar riffs are just basslines holding the songs together rather then standing out for their amazing heavy catchy riffs. JD definitely was all over the bands direction as the vocals and his interest in dubsteb and producing took over the bands sound and became like JD solo projects until head came back to the band, specislly path to totality probably confused a lot of fans haha

    The interesting thing about this album is that it was only made as an excuse to justify touring again in Summer of 2007. Jonathan Davis was hospitalized in 2006 when they were doing the European festival circuit, causing the band to cancel most of their festival appearances that summer, so they went back to those festivals the next year to play them. But they also wanted to keep the Family Values momentum going as they brought the tour back in 2006, so they did that again in 2007, and they didn't want to go do another full tour cycle without a new album to promote because they didn't think people would want to come out and see them with no new songs being played. At least that was my gathering from interviews they did at the time.
    As a result, I think that's why the album sounds like something of an incoherent, inconsistent mess. They had a revolving door of drummers on the album, and had Joey Jordison play live with them for those 2007 tours, and it just has something of a rushed feel to it. SYOTOS was similiar in terms of the band's willingness to experiment, but there's at least something of a consistent flow to that album even if i'm not a fan of a lot of it. While SYOTOS grew on me a bit over a few months, this album did the opposite, and aside from "Starting Over" I never find myself going back to any songs on the album.
    Also, Jonathan's lyrics on the album might be some of his worst.
