The song "Daddy" is about Jonathan (the lead singer) being abused as a child by a babysitter. It took him and the band 22 years before they would perform the song live on stage. The person in question had died at that point. It's an extremely emotional song.
It’s crazy to think that the “are you ready” line was the very first line ppl heard from KoRn. It’s almost as if he’s saying that not just to hype up the song itself or the album, but an entirely new era of rock and metal.
I literally cannot listen to "Daddy" without crying. I haven't gone through that kind of abuse, but I can't help but feel absolutely sorry. You can feel his pain with the way he delivers this song. It's like stepping into his shoes.

Dude clown is always gonna be one of my favorites. Same with shoots and ladders. However my personal favorite album of theirs is their second Life is Peachy. Idk why I’ve just always gravitated towards that album the most. That and issues.
This album arrived like a bombshell when it was first released. No one had ever heard anything like it, and the mix of visceral rage and wounded vulnerability was something a lot of people identified with, myself included. Glad you enjoyed it.

@@mollyesanborn a lot of bands like Korn, A Perfect Circle, Tallah, My Ticket Home, and every band ever since has a lot owed to Pantera, Fear Factory, and especially Sepultura. Korn talks very highly of Sepultura oh and the rhythm that you're hearing and describing is what we call In heavy music Groove. It's hands down the most important subgenre as far as influence on modern metal I can honestly say if it weren't for the Groove Metal genre we couldn't have modern subgenres such as Metalcore, Nu Metal, Deathcore, Djent, Nu Metalcore, etc. And surprisingly all those genres have a lot of common factors akin to Groove Metal like low tunings, heavy & simple riffs, slow sonic sounding tempos, and an overall sound that when you hear you live you most likely gonna move that's the Groove that came from Groove Metal that is still felt to this day
I've listened to these tracks HUNDREDS of times, but listening to your descriptions it's almost like hearing them for the first time. 2:08-SOAD started 3 years after this album came out, 4:18 The other vocalist is second guitarist HEAD, 6:32 yes, it's exactly about that, 7:02 Guitarist HEAD again, sometimes MUNKY the main guitarist, 9:00 that's what growing up in Bakersfield will do to you if you are different, 11:15 it's a guitar technique where the feedback is controlled with the volume button, 14:00 that was bassist FIELDY leaving a voice mail to one of the guitarist, 15:00 the song is about being a meth addict, 16:50 this song has only been played live 3 times since 1994, so yeah. 17:30 that tape belonged to the previous owner of the ranch where they recorded the album, 18:40 listen to the first Mr. Bungle record, you'll hear why they say it was a HUGE influence
Good point! But in the song Need to - Brian doesn't have any vocal parts. Just Jonathan by himself. Fun fact: I became a die hard Korn fan since I heard this song for a very first time. Their sound and style influenced me so much, that I,ve took a guitar lessons, after that bought my first 7 string Ibanez and still covering their songs and recording mine. This band will always keep a special place in my hearth.
Korn always had the skill to put very relatable music, almost all their albums have strong emotionally crushing moments. In the firsts albums they were young, a lot of anger, specially from the singer Jonathan Davis who was sexually abused, so the lyrics are about that or drugs. But then the fame put their members on personal decadence, so in the mid era of korn some members left and the anger turned into that (the guitarist took it worst, he left the band to start a christian project, but some years ago they returned to the band and they are back as a family). Now in their last album released in 2019 the singer lost his wife some months ago, and that is reflected on "The nothing" 2019 album, and is so sad so listen, he starts the album crying in the first song and ends with the most honest and hopeless sense of personal defeat I've heard in music. Becase Korn music grows with them, Daddy is the anger of being abused by an adult, but the sadness of losing someone when now YOU are the father of your kids is something harder, way beyond just anger. Is interesting some context too, metal in those years was not this kind of vulnerable and open, lyrics were about anger with politics, protest against war, being rude, fantasy, grandiloquent themes. But korn was one of the first band who started the idea of showing how vulnerable and defeated someone can be, in first person in the most raw and unrefined way possible. And you can see this in most of the first nu-metal bands from the 90's. Then the genre lost that creepy and disturbing part to be more commercial, but the vulnerability side never left, just changed subgenre, specially towards the "core" ones, then even prog with Leprous being a good example of that.
Great comment! Yeah, I've only heard this first album from them but it's already clear to me that they infuse a lot of vulnerability and personal topics into their music. It makes it really powerful and emotionally charged. I'm really curious to hear The Nothing now, that sounds like its going to be quite the experience to listen to.

It could show really well the whole journey the band went through by analizing the beginning and the end, so you could see the middle after and understand better what they aimed and how they progressed little by little.

Korns first 2 records changed my life! Life is Peachy by far being my favourite. It was the record they seemed to really nail down their sound initially before branching into a kind of unique alternative metal style in later albums. Their debut album has so many amazing songs on it, nothing compares to being at a Korn concert where suddenly the lights go down and that ride cymbal starts in for the intro to Blind...you just know the place is about to explode! I hold this record close to my heart, it was very cool to see you listen to it for the first time, you have a very open mind when it comes to music, that's really awesome. Cheers!

This band literally saved my life when I was in high school in the 90s. Nobody talked about mental health at all. When I first heard their lyrics, and someone was talking about their mental problems in such clear way, I cried so hard. It was something I could finally relate to. It was something stable to grasp when my own mind is spiraling out of control. There will never be a band that replaces Korn in my heart.
This album and Life is Peachy are something special, I don't think you'll ever hear anything like it. It's chaos that flows and the rhythm section is distinctly Korn along with the screechy high and heavy distorted low guitar. And if you've been through some trauma then you'll definitely relate.
Korn was THE nu-metal band that litteraly everyone was listening to when I was in uni. Never been a big fan but the second album is pretty good...nice review.
You like koRn? Their early work lay the foundation for Nu Metal but when Life Is Peachy came out in '96, I think they really came into their own. Commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of dark humour that really gives each song a feeling of ethereal dread. They've been compared to Limp Bizkit but I think koRn have a more bitter, cynical sense of humour. In '98, koRn released "Follow The Leader," their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpeice is "Freak On A Leash." A song so catchy most people probably don't even listen to the lyrics, but they should! ...Because it's not just about a stray cartoon bullet going on a perilous adventure in the real world, it's a symbolic statement about the fragility of life and about the band itself.

It's weirdly enjoyable watching someone discover basically my late teens/early uni days as I discovered music for myself. Korn, Deftones, Tool, System, Weezer. Lol! I await eagerly for you to get to Korn's next two albums, Life is Peachy and Follow the Leader. Around this time was the height of the music industry as far as profits, it was the most money they were ever making... especially when Limp Bizkit hit.

@@bendetevz615 Issues was the last album if theirs I liked. Nu Metal was easy to grow out of back then. I ran out of angst. Lol! It flooded the market but was also a gateway genre to heavier stuff. Head leaving the band also hurt them significantly.

It was a trip in high school in the '90s watching this band go from a fairly esoteric band for stoners and skaters my freshman year to a bona fide mainstream sensation that everyone listened to by their third album my senior year.
This is one of my favorite bands to see live, I've seen them 8 times. Great analysis of such a pivotal album of the 90s. I discovered them right on the heels of discovering White Zombie's La Sexorcisto album. Talk about two bands that shaped my love for heavy music.

Welcome to my high-school years. I had a lot of pain and anger to deal with (didn't we all?) and this cd helped me get through it. My step-dad had these big speakers downstairs and I would crank this up, make things rattle, and scream along with this all the way through, before my parents got home. It's amazing I didn't blow out my vocal cords or piss off the neighbors.
Lol, who are you kidding. You totally pissed off your neighbors, and you knew it and didn’t care. In college in ‘94/‘95, I blared this shit as loud as possible myself out my bathroom window while I was showering, to intentionally piss off the construction workers next door who kept waking me up at 7am with their radio. Loved this so much! Especially your reaction to Lies. By far the most underrated song on the album. The part where you say it got “clearer” is one of my favorite parts. What that was is you hearing just one guitar playing in the left channel, followed by another guitar track coming in on the right

Hi Molly, what a great reaction, the full KoRn album, brill idea. Brings back a lot of memories to the mid/later 90's when I heard this album the first time. Your descriptions about angst, anger, emotions, raw, dark, atmosphere, are all very true. KoRn created this sound, really one of a kind. Thanks, or due to, the horrible experiences by mainly Jonathan, this album was created, bringing comfort and joy to people. They still go strong and looking forward seeing them again live on stage in Amsterdam in May

One of the greatest debut albums ever and one of my favorite albums of all time this album changed my life forever and I became a huge fan of Korn after hearing this album, Johnathan davis is my idol and it’s amazing to think that on 11th October this masterpiece will turn 30 years old.
my favorites off of this album are blind, clown and lies and it was great to see you enjoying my favorite songs as well. i don't enjoy this album as much as their other releases but seeing you react to them has made me see it from a new perspective

I remember listening to this in the 90s. It starts out fun and interesting and disolves in to pain and sadness. People "media" used to think they were promoting child abuse but the lyrics are dealing with the singer's own abuse as a child. This is a band where you will be bopping along to the music while crying on the inside.
Yes! The course that this album takes from the energetic "Are You Ready!" at the start of Blind to the muffled sobs at the end of Daddy is really something else... it's a trip for sure.
I love this album. It really influenced me as a drummer. You really don't know what to expect with Korn. I also love the little phone call recording in the beginning of Helmet in the Bush. Kinda creepy, kinda funny. Life Is Peachy is a good album too. Their first 4 records were the best.
Clown is probably my favorite song on the album. This album took heavy music and music in general in a new direction! This is a legendary album in all of rock and metal.

This album influenced so much of the “nu metal” music that really exploded around 1998 and was HUGE until 2003-ish. Without this record, im not sure that genre takes off the way it did. While most of it hasn’t aged well, for a moment in time it captured a generation.
Fake news. I heard them for the first time in 1997 with Life is Peachy, and its 2022 and they are still selling out arenas. They are indeed, still HUGE.
Yeah it was very trendy for a short time, even bands that should know better like Slayer and Sepultura started incorporating elements of it into their sound. Thankfully it flamed out quickly but it was an interesting moment in time. Not saying all nu-metal is bad but it got way overexposed and commercialized, then Limp Bizkit came along and put it out of its misery.

I personally don't recommend that you listen to their other albums because I always felt that a lot of the personality that characterized his first album disappeared in their next projects, the only ones that could be saved would be Follow the Leader (1997) and Issues (1999) but the rest are very regular albums in my opinion. greetings from Chile!
I first listened to this album 14 years ago and it's still one of my favourites of all time. I love the riffs, the rhythm, all the guitar effects, the bass and the raw emotional vocals. Jonathan Davis does all the vocals with the exception of Ball Tongue and Lies, where you can hear some background vocals by the guitarist Brian "Head" Welch. The story behind Daddy is that the lyrics are about the singer being abused as a child by his babysitter and when he told about it to his parents, they wouldn't believe him. Back in the day the band would perform the song live only about three times, because the lyrics are so personal for Jonathan, that he started crying everytime. That's why everytime they recorded that song for the album, they kept recording even after the song was over. Since then Jonathan refused to perform the song until they did a tour for the 20th anniversary of this album and even after 20 years he got really emotional on stage. Also one of the reasons why this album is so raw and emotional, is the producer Ross Robinson, who basically pulled out the emotions out of the entire band. Can't wait for you to react to the rest of the discography. The second album, Life is Peachy, has a guest performance by Chino from Deftones on the song Wicked, which is a cover of a song by Ice Cube.
Can't wait for you to make your way to "Follow the leader"! It's by far my favorite album from them. This album is bit of a miss for me, but I do value it for what it is on their journey to finding their sound.
I can't wait to hear it, as well as the rest of their discography. I think the messy rawness of this first album is great though, it just delivers so much on the intensity and emotion.
I’ve never heard anyone say the Self Titled as a miss. That is pretty wild. Maybe a bit of context will help. No one sounded anything like this before these guys. Everything was new including the vulnerability of the front man. One of the darkest, creative, raw, and uncomfortable releases ever.
My favorite tracks from Self-Titled Korn: 1st DADDY (their musical peak) 2nd NEED TO (underated and far better than Clown) 3rd FAGET (dat anger) 4th SHOOTS AND LADDERS (so childhood-suggestive) 5th LIES (I love the syncopated rhythms here)

I've been into Korn since 95 and never looked back. So happy to see you listening to so many bands I grew up loving. The first four Korn albums are my favorites (especially Issues), even though (IMHO) they've never made a bad one (13 albums so far, 14th comes out next month). First Deftones, then System of a Down, now Korn; PLEASE do Limp Bizkit & Slipknot so your nu-metal training can become complete. Keep up the great work, your reactions keep validating my music tastes, LOL.

This album was a “go to” album for me when it came out while I was in high school. The raw emotion and the different sound from almost everything else going on at the time (remember we had hair metal followed by grunge). I saw them several times live and they put on a great show. Now, in my 40s, I still enjoy this album. My new favorite band (completely different genre of music) is Unleash the Archers. They are a Canadian power metal band with amazing musicians, stellar vocalist Brittney Slayes, and incredible live shows. Give their album Apex a listen.

The story behind Daddy is very dark, the song is about Jonathan Davis (the singer). When he was a kid, he was raped by his babysitter, and then when he told his parents they didn't believe him, so it really traumatized him and scarred him for life. So thats why he broke down and cried, but before the recording of the song, he told his band members to keep playing if he would get too emotional. It really is a deep song lyrically and is among the darkest songs by KoЯn.
Yeah, what an intense song. Very hard to listen to but also I applaud Korn for not using a ton of metaphors in their lyrics and sugarcoating the topic, they put it all out there. And the last sentence of your comment, are you implying that there are Korn songs darker than Daddy? Oh my... :O
This was great! Honestly this is the first video I've watched of yours and I absolutely loved it. This is my all-time favorite album and it's such a trip to watch somebody first discover it live, like this. I actually got nervous for you before daddy started. That track hits everybody like a ton of bricks no matter what. I heard this album for the first time in the eighth grade and when that song came on, I froze. Unbelievable. They've been my all-time favorite band since. I've seen them 51 times and one of my old bands has had the absolute honor to play a show with them. I'll never forget that day as long as I live. Those guys are my heroes! No doubt about it. I'll be sure to check out your other videos. Keep kicking ass!

Yeah, Daddy is quite a devastatingly heavy track, I've never really heard anything like it though in terms of how direct they are with the subject matter. Definitely a ballsy move on Korn's part, but it's what makes this album so unforgettable. So cool you've seen them 51 times AND played a show with them, that's awesome!

As you listen to their discography, you can definitely hear the evolution. You rarely hear the same album twice. Their second album Life is peachy is similar to their self-titled with the rawness and whatnot, but as they progress they get experimental as all hell in the best way! Oh yeah playing with them was so cool. It was just unreal! I get all giddy just thinking about it lol. That was back in 2009. Had the privilege of seeing them again back in October. Most of the band ended up getting covid believe it or not but they're doing well now.
I am 42 yrs old drummer / bass / younameit now, and at year of release, this album made me awake about possibilities of mashing up anything you feel like in metal .. just to follow with that huge wave of metal after this album to come
Wow, this is such a fresh perspective on one of my all time favorite childhood bands. Seeing someone who knows the likes of SoaD, Deftones and Tool listening to Korn for the first time feels pretty magical. Can't say I didn't tear up a couple of times throughout this video. This album was on a different level when it came out. If you’ve never heard Korn through some good car speakers and a subwoofer you’re really missing out on meaty layers (especially low-end) that you can’t hear with headphones.

Amazing guys, incredible musicians, David stays low key but he’s a phenomenal person, sent me a personal package of rehearsal used drum sticks recently with a signature dedicated to me, “blind” was the first song I’ve learned on the drums, here I am still playing 16+ years later, one of the few bands I have tattooed on me for the rest of my life

Really cool video, loved seeing your reaction to this legendary album. I was 14 or 15yo when this band came out of nowhere, with this incredible music and album. I still remember the first time hearing this album...middle school, sitting in the auditorium during some bs speech giver about something that I didn't care about then (or now), a friend handing me his headphones (connected to a Walkman, with a cassette in it, which really dates this story), him saying "check this shit out", him hitting play and Blind starts...I was blown away by a sound I'd never heard before at that time, and by the time track 4 rolled around (Clown), I was sold and went out that weekend and picked up that CD. Such a great time back in those days, brings back a lot of great memories...hard to believe that was actually 28 years ago! Where has the time, and the years, went to?? Time flies, for real. 🤔
Best band, best album ever! I've been listening to Korn since I was 15 and they were new and blew by soul out of my body. I'm now 42 and they are still my favorite. I've seen them live over 20 times and I've met Jon , Fieldy, and Head.
Bought this album the week it came out .. Saw them perform it live from start to finish 20 years later. Ground breaking ...no ground destroying... I so much a Korn fan. My 22 year old daughter has the album cover from ' see you on the other side' album tattooed on the arm.. The comparison to system made me laugh...in a good way, as it's light years before them. Love you Jon, for going inside your self and bringing the passion out...even daddy.. It allowed you all to be yourself and not hide or be bullied or anything... 🤘🤘🤘
I think you're gonna enjoy a lot L.D-50 by Mudvayne. It sounds a bit like Korn but with their own twist. That being said, a lot of the percussion you praised while you were listening to the album is made with the slapping and clicking sound of Fieldy's bass. Anyways, great reaction as always!
@@mollyesanborn To date, they have 14 records out between '94 and '22...with a 15th on the way last I heard. All KoRn and what they do, but different spins on the whole thing too (roughly around 2007 to 2011 or so). Issues, as mentioned, it also really good. Certainly check that out. I noticed you did one on Life is Peachy...I'll be watching that one next, but their following record to that, Follow the Leader, is IMO another one to take a listen to.
Oh the vocals that shout "Ball Tongue" and "Faget" were Brian "Head" Welch's vocals, the lead guitarist, he does a few backup vocals here and there. Need To was all Jonathan. Jonathan has a wide vocal range, as much as Elvis according to Wikipedia

Love that you reacted to this one. I first got into this record in 2014 or so, when I was a sophomore in high school, and I’ve loved it ever since. Divine is one of the greatest “fuck you” songs ever (right up there with “Hush” by Tool). I agree with you about Helmet in the Bush being awesome and underrated as well. Without being the biggest Korn fan, I still return to this record from time to time. An all time classic! “Issues” is probably my second favorite Korn album, though I wouldn’t say it really compares to this one.
Helmet in the Bush is such a great track, I just love the tone of it. Divine has quickly become a favorite as well, that part toward the end just brings so much awesome energy! I'm excited to see what I'm going to think about the rest of their albums, this debut of theirs had so many crazy elements on it that I really don't know what to expect with the next one.
So the people arguing at the end of daddy was from a random cassette tape the producer Ross had found. Not for sure why it was included, they didn't know it who was on tape or when it was recorded it was just a random argument or a cassette tape that was discovered.
I’ve listened to this album hundreds or even thousands of times. Just hasn’t got old. Try Follow the Leader, Untouchables, Life is Peachy, Issues and for their newer work listen to The Nothing and Serenity of Suffering
Saw Korn live at Tipitina's in New Orleans in about 95 or so on the tour supporting this album. They opened with Blind, and they sort extended the intro out into a couple of minutes, playing it slightly differently and stretching it out. When they finally dropped in, it was absolute CHAOS. To this day I have never seen a crowd go more totally insane than in the first few minutes of that show. I will never forget it. I don't much dig their later albums but this one is absolute manna from heaven. It was, and remains, a groundbreaking and moving piece of art. It was truly a paradigm shift for metal, and they did it with one record. The album was recorded using fully analog equipment, which to me is why it has that raw and edgy feel.
Awesome comment, that concert sounds like it was absolutely wild! Would have loved to have been there to experience that energy. And I didn't know that about the analogue equipment, I love that raw sound that this album has.
I bought a HIt Parader magaine in 95 and read an article about Korn, I later bought the cd. I started showing my friends this new band I was listening to. They loved it so much that they ended up skipping high school just to listen to it...lol. Good upload Molly!

I remember "Clown" being my eventual favorite from this album, but it's just been forever since I've listened to the whole thing. Their next album is also cool, but their 3rd album "Follow the Leader" is probably their best.

The song "Daddy" is about Jonathan (the lead singer) being abused as a child by a babysitter. It took him and the band 22 years before they would perform the song live on stage. The person in question had died at that point. It's an extremely emotional song.

It’s crazy to think that the “are you ready” line was the very first line ppl heard from KoRn. It’s almost as if he’s saying that not just to hype up the song itself or the album, but an entirely new era of rock and metal.

I literally cannot listen to "Daddy" without crying. I haven't gone through that kind of abuse, but I can't help but feel absolutely sorry. You can feel his pain with the way he delivers this song. It's like stepping into his shoes.

Dude clown is always gonna be one of my favorites. Same with shoots and ladders. However my personal favorite album of theirs is their second Life is Peachy. Idk why I’ve just always gravitated towards that album the most. That and issues.
This album arrived like a bombshell when it was first released. No one had ever heard anything like it, and the mix of visceral rage and wounded vulnerability was something a lot of people identified with, myself included. Glad you enjoyed it.
As Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, and White Zombie preceded and influence Korn, people had actually heard a lot of music like it several years before it.

@@mollyesanborn a lot of bands like Korn, A Perfect Circle, Tallah, My Ticket Home, and every band ever since has a lot owed to Pantera, Fear Factory, and especially Sepultura. Korn talks very highly of Sepultura oh and the rhythm that you're hearing and describing is what we call In heavy music Groove. It's hands down the most important subgenre as far as influence on modern metal I can honestly say if it weren't for the Groove Metal genre we couldn't have modern subgenres such as Metalcore, Nu Metal, Deathcore, Djent, Nu Metalcore, etc. And surprisingly all those genres have a lot of common factors akin to Groove Metal like low tunings, heavy & simple riffs, slow sonic sounding tempos, and an overall sound that when you hear you live you most likely gonna move that's the Groove that came from Groove Metal that is still felt to this day
I've listened to these tracks HUNDREDS of times, but listening to your descriptions it's almost like hearing them for the first time.
You have a very bright future in this kind of thing, you're highly articulate and personable. Thank you for uploading!

2:08-SOAD started 3 years after this album came out, 4:18 The other vocalist is second guitarist HEAD, 6:32 yes, it's exactly about that, 7:02 Guitarist HEAD again, sometimes MUNKY the main guitarist, 9:00 that's what growing up in Bakersfield will do to you if you are different, 11:15 it's a guitar technique where the feedback is controlled with the volume button, 14:00 that was bassist FIELDY leaving a voice mail to one of the guitarist, 15:00 the song is about being a meth addict, 16:50 this song has only been played live 3 times since 1994, so yeah. 17:30 that tape belonged to the previous owner of the ranch where they recorded the album, 18:40 listen to the first Mr. Bungle record, you'll hear why they say it was a HUGE influence

Yes Head often does backing vocals, like in Lies, Ball Tongue or Faget. But In the chorus of Need to specifically, it was only Jonathan's voice.

I became a die hard Korn fan since I heard this song for a very first time. Their sound and style influenced me so much, that I,ve took a guitar lessons, after that bought my first 7 string Ibanez and still covering their songs and recording mine.
This band will always keep a special place in my hearth.
Korn always had the skill to put very relatable music, almost all their albums have strong emotionally crushing moments. In the firsts albums they were young, a lot of anger, specially from the singer Jonathan Davis who was sexually abused, so the lyrics are about that or drugs. But then the fame put their members on personal decadence, so in the mid era of korn some members left and the anger turned into that (the guitarist took it worst, he left the band to start a christian project, but some years ago they returned to the band and they are back as a family). Now in their last album released in 2019 the singer lost his wife some months ago, and that is reflected on "The nothing" 2019 album, and is so sad so listen, he starts the album crying in the first song and ends with the most honest and hopeless sense of personal defeat I've heard in music. Becase Korn music grows with them, Daddy is the anger of being abused by an adult, but the sadness of losing someone when now YOU are the father of your kids is something harder, way beyond just anger.
Is interesting some context too, metal in those years was not this kind of vulnerable and open, lyrics were about anger with politics, protest against war, being rude, fantasy, grandiloquent themes. But korn was one of the first band who started the idea of showing how vulnerable and defeated someone can be, in first person in the most raw and unrefined way possible. And you can see this in most of the first nu-metal bands from the 90's. Then the genre lost that creepy and disturbing part to be more commercial, but the vulnerability side never left, just changed subgenre, specially towards the "core" ones, then even prog with Leprous being a good example of that.
Great comment! Yeah, I've only heard this first album from them but it's already clear to me that they infuse a lot of vulnerability and personal topics into their music. It makes it really powerful and emotionally charged. I'm really curious to hear The Nothing now, that sounds like its going to be quite the experience to listen to.
@@mollyesanborn it would be really cool to hear it before the other things in my honest opinion, the two extremes kind of stuff maybe? It could show really well the whole journey the band went through by analizing the beginning and the end, so you could see the middle after and understand better what they aimed and how they progressed little by little.
The lead singer Jonathan Davis said in an interview that once he got sober, he realized what he was trying to do with his voice and his cleaner vocals got noticeably better
Korns first 2 records changed my life! Life is Peachy by far being my favourite. It was the record they seemed to really nail down their sound initially before branching into a kind of unique alternative metal style in later albums. Their debut album has so many amazing songs on it, nothing compares to being at a Korn concert where suddenly the lights go down and that ride cymbal starts in for the intro to Blind...you just know the place is about to explode! I hold this record close to my heart, it was very cool to see you listen to it for the first time, you have a very open mind when it comes to music, that's really awesome. Cheers!

This band literally saved my life when I was in high school in the 90s. Nobody talked about mental health at all. When I first heard their lyrics, and someone was talking about their mental problems in such clear way, I cried so hard. It was something I could finally relate to. It was something stable to grasp when my own mind is spiraling out of control. There will never be a band that replaces Korn in my heart.
This album and Life is Peachy are something special, I don't think you'll ever hear anything like it. It's chaos that flows and the rhythm section is distinctly Korn along with the screechy high and heavy distorted low guitar. And if you've been through some trauma then you'll definitely relate.

Korn was THE nu-metal band that litteraly everyone was listening to when I was in uni. Never been a big fan but the second album is pretty good...nice review.
You like koRn? Their early work lay the foundation for Nu Metal but when Life Is Peachy came out in '96, I think they really came into their own. Commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of dark humour that really gives each song a feeling of ethereal dread. They've been compared to Limp Bizkit but I think koRn have a more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
In '98, koRn released "Follow The Leader," their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpeice is "Freak On A Leash." A song so catchy most people probably don't even listen to the lyrics, but they should! ...Because it's not just about a stray cartoon bullet going on a perilous adventure in the real world, it's a symbolic statement about the fragility of life and about the band itself.

I don't listen to much of Korn's newer material, but their older albums, especially this one, hold a special place in my heart.
It's weirdly enjoyable watching someone discover basically my late teens/early uni days as I discovered music for myself. Korn, Deftones, Tool, System, Weezer. Lol! I await eagerly for you to get to Korn's next two albums, Life is Peachy and Follow the Leader. Around this time was the height of the music industry as far as profits, it was the most money they were ever making... especially when Limp Bizkit hit.

@@bendetevz615 Issues was the last album if theirs I liked. Nu Metal was easy to grow out of back then. I ran out of angst. Lol! It flooded the market but was also a gateway genre to heavier stuff. Head leaving the band also hurt them significantly.

It was a trip in high school in the '90s watching this band go from a fairly esoteric band for stoners and skaters my freshman year to a bona fide mainstream sensation that everyone listened to by their third album my senior year.
This is one of my favorite bands to see live, I've seen them 8 times. Great analysis of such a pivotal album of the 90s. I discovered them right on the heels of discovering White Zombie's La Sexorcisto album. Talk about two bands that shaped my love for heavy music.

He did a great episode on Joe Rogan's podcast. Also, much respect for not shying away from saying potentially enraging song names. Welcome to my high-school years. I had a lot of pain and anger to deal with (didn't we all?) and this cd helped me get through it. My step-dad had these big speakers downstairs and I would crank this up, make things rattle, and scream along with this all the way through, before my parents got home. It's amazing I didn't blow out my vocal cords or piss off the neighbors.
My neighbors loved the music, they even threw a brick through the window, so they could listen to it better. ;)

One of the greatest debut albums ever and one of my favorite albums of all time this album changed my life forever and I became a huge fan of Korn after hearing this album, Johnathan davis is my idol and it’s amazing to think that on 11th October this masterpiece will turn 30 years old.

I remember listening to this in the 90s. It starts out fun and interesting and disolves in to pain and sadness. People "media" used to think they were promoting child abuse but the lyrics are dealing with the singer's own abuse as a child.

This album influenced so much of the “nu metal” music that really exploded around 1998 and was HUGE until 2003-ish. Without this record, im not sure that genre takes off the way it did. While most of it hasn’t aged well, for a moment in time it captured a generation.

I first listened to this album 14 years ago and it's still one of my favourites of all time. I love the riffs, the rhythm, all the guitar effects, the bass and the raw emotional vocals. Jonathan Davis does all the vocals with the exception of Ball Tongue and Lies, where you can hear some background vocals by the guitarist Brian "Head" Welch. The story behind Daddy is that the lyrics are about the singer being abused as a child by his babysitter and when he told about it to his parents, they wouldn't believe him. Back in the day the band would perform the song live only about three times, because the lyrics are so personal for Jonathan, that he started crying everytime. That's why everytime they recorded that song for the album, they kept recording even after the song was over. Since then Jonathan refused to perform the song until they did a tour for the 20th anniversary of this album and even after 20 years he got really emotional on stage. Also one of the reasons why this album is so raw and emotional, is the producer Ross Robinson, who basically pulled out the emotions out of the entire band. Can't wait for you to react to the rest of the discography. The second album, Life is Peachy, has a guest performance by Chino from Deftones on the song Wicked, which is a cover of a song by Ice Cube.
I really can't imagine him performing Daddy live, it's just such an intense track. I'm looking forward to hearing Wicked on their next album!

Can't wait for you to make your way to "Follow the leader"! It's by far my favorite album from them. This album is bit of a miss for me, but I do value it for what it is on their journey to finding their sound.
I can't wait to hear it, as well as the rest of their discography. I think the messy rawness of this first album is great though, it just delivers so much on the intensity and emotion.
I’ve never heard anyone say the Self Titled as a miss. That is pretty wild. Maybe a bit of context will help. No one sounded anything like this before these guys. Everything was new including the vulnerability of the front man. One of the darkest, creative, raw, and uncomfortable releases ever.

I've been into Korn since 95 and never looked back. So happy to see you listening to so many bands I grew up loving. The first four Korn albums are my favorites (especially Issues), even though (IMHO) they've never made a bad one (13 albums so far, 14th comes out next month). First Deftones, then System of a Down, now Korn; PLEASE do Limp Bizkit & Slipknot so your nu-metal training can become complete. Keep up the great work, your reactions keep validating my music tastes, LOL.

This album was a “go to” album for me when it came out while I was in high school. The raw emotion and the different sound from almost everything else going on at the time (remember we had hair metal followed by grunge). I saw them several times live and they put on a great show. Now, in my 40s, I still enjoy this album.
My new favorite band (completely different genre of music) is Unleash the Archers. They are a Canadian power metal band with amazing musicians, stellar vocalist Brittney Slayes, and incredible live shows. Give their album Apex a listen.

The story behind Daddy is very dark, the song is about Jonathan Davis (the singer). When he was a kid, he was raped by his babysitter, and then when he told his parents they didn't believe him, so it really traumatized him and scarred him for life. So thats why he broke down and cried, but before the recording of the song, he told his band members to keep playing if he would get too emotional. It really is a deep song lyrically and is among the darkest songs by KoЯn.
Yeah, what an intense song. Very hard to listen to but also I applaud Korn for not using a ton of metaphors in their lyrics and sugarcoating the topic, they put it all out there. And the last sentence of your comment, are you implying that there are Korn songs darker than Daddy? Oh my... :O

This was great! Honestly this is the first video I've watched of yours and I absolutely loved it. This is my all-time favorite album and it's such a trip to watch somebody first discover it live, like this. I actually got nervous for you before daddy started. That track hits everybody like a ton of bricks no matter what. I heard this album for the first time in the eighth grade and when that song came on, I froze. Unbelievable.
They've been my all-time favorite band since. I've seen them 51 times and one of my old bands has had the absolute honor to play a show with them. I'll never forget that day as long as I live. Those guys are my heroes! No doubt about it. I'll be sure to check out your other videos. Keep kicking ass!

Yeah, Daddy is quite a devastatingly heavy track, I've never really heard anything like it though in terms of how direct they are with the subject matter. Definitely a ballsy move on Korn's part, but it's what makes this album so unforgettable. So cool you've seen them 51 times AND played a show with them, that's awesome!

As you listen to their discography, you can definitely hear the evolution. You rarely hear the same album twice. Their second album Life is peachy is similar to their self-titled with the rawness and whatnot, but as they progress they get experimental as all hell in the best way!
Oh yeah playing with them was so cool. It was just unreal! I get all giddy just thinking about it lol. That was back in 2009. Had the privilege of seeing them again back in October. Most of the band ended up getting covid believe it or not but they're doing well now.

Wow, this is such a fresh perspective on one of my all time favorite childhood bands. Seeing someone who knows the likes of SoaD, Deftones and Tool listening to Korn for the first time feels pretty magical. Can't say I didn't tear up a couple of times throughout this video.

Don’t get too excited, my dear. This album was their best, and it all went downhill from here. Sure, they sold a lot of albums because the industry pushed them, but the rest of them were just crap albums to be frank.

This album was on a different level when it came out. If you’ve never heard Korn through some good car speakers and a subwoofer you’re really missing out on meaty layers (especially low-end) that you can’t hear with headphones.

Amazing guys, incredible musicians, David stays low key but he’s a phenomenal person, sent me a personal package of rehearsal used drum sticks recently with a signature dedicated to me, “blind” was the first song I’ve learned on the drums, here I am still playing 16+ years later, one of the few bands I have tattooed on me for the rest of my life

Really cool video, loved seeing your reaction to this legendary album. I was 14 or 15yo when this band came out of nowhere, with this incredible music and album. I still remember the first time hearing this album...middle school, sitting in the auditorium during some bs speech giver about something that I didn't care about then (or now), a friend handing me his headphones (connected to a Walkman, with a cassette in it, which really dates this story), him saying "check this shit out", him hitting play and Blind starts...I was blown away by a sound I'd never heard before at that time, and by the time track 4 rolled around (Clown), I was sold and went out that weekend and picked up that CD. Such a great time back in those days, brings back a lot of great memories...hard to believe that was actually 28 years ago! Where has the time, and the years, went to?? Time flies, for real. 🤔

Best band, best album ever! I've been listening to Korn since I was 15 and they were new and blew by soul out of my body. I'm now 42 and they are still my favorite. I've seen them live over 20 times and I've met Jon , Fieldy, and Head.

I think you're gonna enjoy a lot L.D-50 by Mudvayne. It sounds a bit like Korn but with their own twist.
That being said, a lot of the percussion you praised while you were listening to the album is made with the slapping and clicking sound of Fieldy's bass.

@@mollyesanborn To date, they have 14 records out between '94 and '22...with a 15th on the way last I heard. All KoRn and what they do, but different spins on the whole thing too (roughly around 2007 to 2011 or so). Issues, as mentioned, it also really good. Certainly check that out. I noticed you did one on Life is Peachy...I'll be watching that one next, but their following record to that, Follow the Leader, is IMO another one to take a listen to.

Love that you reacted to this one. I first got into this record in 2014 or so, when I was a sophomore in high school, and I’ve loved it ever since. Divine is one of the greatest “fuck you” songs ever (right up there with “Hush” by Tool). I agree with you about Helmet in the Bush being awesome and underrated as well. Without being the biggest Korn fan, I still return to this record from time to time. An all time classic! “Issues” is probably my second favorite Korn album, though I wouldn’t say it really compares to this one.
Helmet in the Bush is such a great track, I just love the tone of it. Divine has quickly become a favorite as well, that part toward the end just brings so much awesome energy! I'm excited to see what I'm going to think about the rest of their albums, this debut of theirs had so many crazy elements on it that I really don't know what to expect with the next one.

So the people arguing at the end of daddy was from a random cassette tape the producer Ross had found. Not for sure why it was included, they didn't know it who was on tape or when it was recorded it was just a random argument or a cassette tape that was discovered.
I’ve listened to this album hundreds or even thousands of times. Just hasn’t got old. Try Follow the Leader, Untouchables, Life is Peachy, Issues and for their newer work listen to The Nothing and Serenity of Suffering

He was a mortician and had to deal with dead bodies including Children.
Saw Korn live at Tipitina's in New Orleans in about 95 or so on the tour supporting this album. They opened with Blind, and they sort extended the intro out into a couple of minutes, playing it slightly differently and stretching it out. When they finally dropped in, it was absolute CHAOS. To this day I have never seen a crowd go more totally insane than in the first few minutes of that show. I will never forget it. I don't much dig their later albums but this one is absolute manna from heaven. It was, and remains, a groundbreaking and moving piece of art. It was truly a paradigm shift for metal, and they did it with one record. The album was recorded using fully analog equipment, which to me is why it has that raw and edgy feel.
Awesome comment, that concert sounds like it was absolutely wild! Would have loved to have been there to experience that energy. And I didn't know that about the analogue equipment, I love that raw sound that this album has.

I bought a HIt Parader magaine in 95 and read an article about Korn, I later bought the cd. I started showing my friends this new band I was listening to. They loved it so much that they ended up skipping high school just to listen to it...lol. Good upload Molly!
