Now listen. I was born in 81. There are pictures of me watching the Pirates of Penzance movie with Kevin Kline when I was a toddler. I have seen that movie probably more than a hundred times and basically have it memorized. I’ve seen it live a few times but always, always there was only one Pirate King for me and that was Kevin Kline. That’s still true but you have to realize how absolutely fabulous Jon English is in this role for me to even have enjoyed watching him in it not just once but I continue coming back just to see Jon.
Please please pleaseeeeee whoever owns the rights to this and the rest of Jon English’s performances get them on DVD for all regions and let his numerous fans once again be able to watch the full performances. Getting to see the snippets is just not enough. We need these to brighten us all up during these dark days.
Jon English was a total shit stirrer(in the nicest possible way!),he loved interacting with the audience, cast, crew and band.Once of the nicest guys you'd ever meet(I met him several times),so talented as a singer, composer, actor and comedian. Now cracking the angels in heaven up with his fine sense of humour and jokes😂Gone too soon,❤and miss you mate😢
So what does the Australian lover of G&S musical entertainment do now? Nothing can top this trio, along with the rest of the cast. I'm forever grateful that I took my girls to this particular production. Whenever I need a good laugh /cry, I come here. ❤️❤️As for the dialogue from at 12:25...I can't hold back my tears...
😂We watch it regularly on DVD,myself,my kids and grandkids!!Some things are timeless and good harmless fun.So grateful that I grew up with Jon English, saw him several times in JC Superstar, the "Jokers and Queens" tour with Marcia Hines,The Mikado and Pirates. Also multiple live gigs, such a talented and deadset funny guy.Gone too soon, love and miss you mate❤😢
I'm in heaven at last. I've been trying to find this for years! I have an old VHS of this which I can't play- I actually went to this performance and is I think the best ever take on Pirates. Lots of wonderful memories, I hope I can find this DVD I can't thank you enough for posting this and the other two G&S👍👍👍👍
I brought a dvd copy from ABC a while back, not sure if its still available! Its honestly the one dvd I've used more than a few hundred times!! (I use to watch it daily during my late teens and up until my mid 20s.)
@@ishtarg2251 thanks for the comment. Yes unfortunately they no longer have the DVD. But I do regularly check on the offchance they will one day re release it
Jon English always stole the show!!😅The first time I saw him when I was just a kid was in Jesus Christ Superstar,he played Judas so well,I don't think anyone could've done that role better.Saw him several times again in revivals of Superstar(featuring most of the original cast),The Mikado,Pirates," Jokers and Queens"tours with Marcia Hines. Also multiple local gigs in regional Australia. So charismatic, charming, multitalented, flirtatious but always a devoted family man.Damn good bloke, thanks for the laughter, tears, music and drinks.❤❤and miss you mate😢.Keep them laughing in heaven. We'll meet again😊❤

Fantastic! Can anyone tell me the year of this recorded performance? I've only before seen the Kevin Kline film. Love that one of course but this stage performance is divine!
I've no objection to messing about within the framework of each operetta, if it's witty. But the Ruddigore insert, with muckings-around, plays havoc with the music. It makes no musical sense. I think the word is Gratuitous.

This is so much fun, always makes me happy when I watch these. Jon English, best pirate king ever. Love this production. 🏴☠️
I love pirates of penzence, I am 15 and still watch it now. :) Simon and Jon are just brilliant.
Usually I don't like actors breaking the 4th wall, but it works in this especially the interaction with the conductor as it's a mutual antagonism

I love the performance and the way they improvise more physical humor into it!

I love how that feud with the conductor keeps returning.
I loved watching Pirates over and over as a kid. Such a big part of my childhood. 💕
It would be great fun to see the rehearsals
Saw this live in Adelaide many years ago. Very funny
Excellente pièce , drôle, belle, superbement jouée. Merci.

The whole production was great but 12:05 reeeeeally takes the cake. Simon Gallaher just standing there while this madness is going on behind him.
I totally agree!
Toni Lamond is an awesome actress :)
Love this performance
I do too!!
Me too
@1621Rosie what year was this actual performance?

P.S. Poor Simon, having to stand there while John hams it up behind him!
Yeah, no kidding! How did he manage to keep a straight face?

12.15 I think Jon just came up with it there and then, because of Toni's reaction.
Those of us with 0 interest in performing (and even less talent) still all want to be in Pirates of Penzance.
Finally a good copy! Every other video on here is so low quality
Any chance you can upload the full performance I'm enjoying these
Happy Birthday Fredrick
"Dear Pirate King,I love your purple pants, meet me...."😂❤
12:34 Did anyone catch that eye roll from Simon?
It's a lot lower budget but I'm enjoying this one more than the Kevin Kline one.
The DVD is available directly from www.essgee.com/ and it's cheaper than on eBay.

In the 90s sometime but you can purchase digital download versions: www.essgee.com/html/NEWSHOPPINGMALLPAGE1.html

This Frederick is definitely batting for the straight team.

These are great like really great but Kevin Kline will always be the pirate king
its a pity the tim curry performance was never recorded
It think it depends on who you saw first. I grew up with this version, and can't watch Kevin Kline, I started but I made it less than 30mins.
I as a person who has only seen both versions recently, say that they are both good and I prefer some songs in one and some songs in the other.
Show off.

Couldn't they find any good singers? This was very amateurish IMO.
