- The Volkshalle would have been seven times the size of St. Peter's Basilica with a dome 16 times larger and room for 160,000 people.
Germania: Hitler's Dream Capital and Albert Speer’s plan to transform Berlin into the capital of a 1,000-year Reich
In the years leading up to World War II, Adolf Hitler didn't just see Berlin as the capital of Germany - he envisioned it as the capital of the world.
But according to historian Roger Moorhouse, Berlin was poorly organized and hardly the menacing giant the Nazi leader thought it should be.
So, in 1937, plans surfaced for "Welthauptstadt Germania," or World Capital Germania, an awe-inspiring metropolis inspired by ancient Roman architecture.
Rooted in a spirit of intimidation, the designs were about as grandiose as urban planning gets.
The centerpiece of the mega-city was the Volkshalle, or People's Hall, a colossal domed building that would have been the largest indoor structure in the world if completed.
At the halfway mark would have been a gigantic arch, similar to the Arch de Triomphe in Paris, but large enough to house the French arch underneath.

Nobody but the Germans themselves could have done a film like this - nobody else if they had tried would have come close to how good it is! Similar with Das Boot, Stalingrad to name two others. War films by the Germans from their perspective.
You need to check out “The Captain”
it's not that the germans are some genious but those films were made out of need the allies could portray them selfs as rambos cause they won the war they had the ethical advantage to portray them selfs as they wanted on the other hand if german film makers were trying to copy american cinema that would be a disaster for the country status in the post war and their personal career
@@MrThePsychologist No he means when Americans make movie about this man you get an Indiana Jones or NEIN NEIN NEIN portrayal, instead of something slightly more realistic like what is portrayed in Downfall.
@@AFGuidesHDno what he says makes sense, when the US makes a film they always try to make themselves look good or even worse they make themselves look like the reason the war against nazi Germany was won.
"You have to be on stage when the curtain falls"
Idk why but I absolutely love that quote.
a way to say you are right please do not kill me but you can day eitherway lol
He killed himself because he heard what happened to Mussolini.
Speer should have answered "the captain should stay on the ship when it sinks"
That was Speer’s poetic way of telling Hitler to just fucking die, in case people didn’t notice.
If only Speer know that soon there would be a curtain all over Europe.

Himmler: I'm going north to help with the battle of Berlin there.
Yeah right. You're about to do the every man for himself.
yep he wanted to take the reich for himself knowing hitler was dead already. he wasnt the only one, many high ranking SS wanted to take over but the allies were not interested in a reich after hitler
Though he did show up at Doenitzs headquarters further north after he had tried to get the Western Allies to back him.
One fun fact about the Volkshalle the description doesn't mention:
It's believed that moisture from people's breath and sweat would cause clouds under the dome and sometimes indoor rain.
B Drago i think thats just our propaganda again attacking everything that looks nazi
You're 100% correct.
it was also a pipe dream, even if Germany prevailed. No way a building of that size would sit on top of the marsh that was Berlin, would’ve sunk into the ground.
@@lockinload23 How do you know?
@@lockinload23 although the Schwerbelastungskörper that Speer had setup to test the various sites around Berlin did indeed sink more than planned, I think they would have found a solution. It would probably have been incredibly expensive and unimaginably resource heavy but so be it…
They were so confident they started to excavate the site heavily.
static.warthunder.com/upload/image/!%202015%20NEWS/March/Berlin/berlin2.png
one of my favourite scenes in ths masterpiece of cinematography. Hitler asking Speer for his opinion about leaving Berlin, Speer: "you have to be on the stage when the curtain falls" Hitlers reaction: Scheiße
The model created for this film can be found at the Berliner Unterwelt Museum. I was able to make a crappy picture of it with my former cellphone 3 years ago, before being told I wasn't aloud to do so.
what happened to the real ones ?
@@AFGuidesHDNo way you’re here! I loved your video on the CoD WW2 cutscenes.
Preliminary scaled weight tests of the largest structures planned still exist in Berlin today. They still plot the strength/density of the soil today.
Their verdict: the Dome would started to sink about 10-15 years into completion due to the marshy land Berlin rests on.
i thought that they would build germania in another location
That may be true but if the Reich survived up to today they'd probably solve the problem years ago by now
It would have been extremely difficult, but potentially possible. You can ultimately find bedrock if you are prepared to excavate deep enough. Or go through a resource heavy and difficult process of trying to solidify the soil. The Schwerbelastungskörper foundations are already ten metres underground though. So it would need to be really quite excessive. I wouldn’t expect anything less…..
@@MrWick-el4wk big building in neu Berlin
They're called foundation piles.. Your welcome.
"Sie sollten auf der Bühne stehen wenn der vorhang fällt."
The weight of those words. Holy s^@t.
I don't know why I did not realize this earlier, but Hitler is talking here, dreaming about his new Berlin, his Germania, while everyone in the room could hear the steady explosions of Russian artillery shells. Bizarre.
Watching this scene is when I can come the closest to having some "pity" for Hitler, and those around him, including Speer. As simple human drama we can relate to this as they, like all of us, have had "worthy" dreams, even "fantastical" dreams, and seen them come crashing down. As with us, their once "dreams" are somewhat of an embarrassment later as our failure is exposed. Unlike us, they murdered millions to achieve those dreams, and, what's worse, the murder was part of the "dream".
Not unlike the American dream then.
I feel bad for speer, he just wanted to make cool buildings
Don’t. He willingly used slave labor. Apologetic maybe, but he will always be remembered as a human rights violator and criminal.
don't, he narrowly avoided the death sentence at Nuremberg for a reason - he instituted slave labor that killed hundreds of thousands and was a huge part of the Holocaust
Absolutely not, he knew about a lot of things, including the Holocaust. He had plenty of people from the camps working on his buildings and infrastructure
@@Gamma_249 one way or another, as a person planning to study architecture I am a great admirer of his work
@@jononpaper I suppose I can respect that to a degree, unless you're taking into account concentration camps and death camps
What could have been, the world ponders to this day.
Remember what they took from you.
A failed one.
Shame those giant monuments and buildings never got to be built. They would have been the largest buildings ever made.
@@PcGamerifyuhh not really
@@esothetics Who's "they"?
"...like a lama priest..." Lol
🦙 priest
I think what he really said was "lame" priest.
@@TheNavalAviator No. It's a reference to the title 'Lama' given to Tibetan Buddhist priests. Hence why he also mentions an "empty prayer wheel."
That quote caught me off guard. A lama and priest?
Yea 😂😂
To think mankind not only dreamt of such greatness, but also had the will to pursue it.
While today, such attempts at greatness are considered madness by lesser men and their nihilistic ilk that have inherited the Earth.
The fire of Prometheus that once burnt so brightly, has become little more than a spark in the hearts of men.
I dont think building such a place itself is bad. It looks cool. Its more the way one goes out of its way to do it is more maybe the issue i think
@@Sparrows1121
Well, as was said in the film, it was to be a place of culture and art, people today could hardly even dream of creating such things without the incentive of large monetary gain.
And there is no civilization on earth that hasn't used evil means to achieve their goals. Various country's that exist today are built on the suffering of others, the U.S. being a good example of this.
Had the U.S. not pushed it's way westward and driven out the American Indians to the point of nigh extinction, today they would be much weaker.
@@a_loyal_kiwi88 So you're saying it's okay to commit mass murder, genocide, and to use forced labour to build entire cities simply because "well other people did it too!"?
@@SanctusPaulus1962
No. those are reprehensible acts and nothing can be said that could make them anything other than horrific.
But, just because an act is reprehensible or horrific in nature, shouldn't necessarily be an excuse to dissuade ones using it given the correct circumstance.
"Well other people did it too" doesn't even matter to me beyond the fact people have selective memories when it comes to historical judgment and scrutiny, leading to a lot of hypocritical stances in modern historical dialogue.
@@a_loyal_kiwi88 When could there possibly be a "correct circumstance" to use forced labour or commit mass murder/genocide?

Don’t worry. The gta verse has an Antarctica that has more green coast and yet still has the arctic cold in the South Pole. But the coastal lands would soon be ripping for colonization and Germany would create a colony only to lose it and regain it from the British and its thanks to some third Reich loyalists who had a fourth Reich idea to use this German colony New Swabia as a restart of the third Reich. Making it the fourth Reich. A more serious Reich that doesn’t strict citizens of being a different race or creed. But instead focuses on legacy and traditions. And modernizing over land conquests. Competing with other nationalist states it neighbors with. Germania would get its construction started but not on Berlin.
1:16 I didn't know that Hitler was a proponent of gentrification
And at the heart of the Reich, we have the Funfzig Reichmark Schnitzel Museum Dome
Only in the plutocratic timeline is improving peoples lives considered a bad thing.
@@AFGuidesHD No, it's considered a bad thing when you mass murder millions of innocent people and start a war which results in the deaths of millions more.
I like how you neo-Nazis try to victimise Hitler as if all he wanted was to help people - while completely ignoring the fact that he also killed people for simply being the wrong race. Or do you think that was a good thing?

2:27 Why does Speer look more like Speer than Speer irl 😂
There was another model city that Hitler frequently spent time staring at during the last days of his life: Linz. He wanted to turn it into a cultural and economic center, "the most beautiful city on the Danube", where there would be a ludicrous art museum, and he would spend his retirement years there, writing his memoirs. Such a deluded little man.

Wow, that translation is so bad. 😅
The ideas outlined in the “America First Caucus” document indicate just how far to the extreme right some Republican lawmakers stand - and feel comfortable openly expressing such opinions. On infrastructure, the caucus calls for the construction of roads, bridges and buildings that reflect “the architectural, engineering and aesthetic value that befits the progeny of European architecture, whereby public infrastructure must be utilitarian as well as stunningly, classically beautiful, befitting a world power and source of freedom.”
Then you must hate the buildings in Washington DC.
Wow, cant believe you have nazis in the republican party. How dare they want neoclassical architecture for their buildings. Absolutely racist. We need some good old soulless concrete blocks
@@Kugel-- It's the context, not intrinsically the architecture - obviously.
