I live not far from there and I've been there many times. As long as you don't surprise a bear, or come upon a sow and her cub, the bears are more afraid of you. If you have a huge phobia of bears, simply sing, talk loud, or shout on a regular basis.
I am very proud of you my friend. Most people never even go on one night backpacking trips overnight for the first time and you went for three nights and four days that’s amazing. My hat is off to you. God bless you. John PS Your video was great.
Fun video. I hope to hike portions of this trail this year. The Chequamegon is huge. I am from Phillips originally. The locals pronounce it Sha-wah-ma-gun. Your chipmunk was a red squirrel.
Hi Jeff, just got back from Wisconsin. The New Visions people approached me, too. I was camping a good 30-40 yards away from them. They wanted this large area for themselves, a beautiful area near the good water. I think it was called Yellow River fork? about 3 miles from jerry lake. They wanted me to either leave the area or get some boggy site nearby, but I wasn't having it. It's not like I was right next to them. They moved their entire operation, like a 100 yards away into this bog-zone to get away from me. Then, I had this massive area to myself. They are weird. Theyeither need to get their own camp or learn how to do their thing with other campers around.
It makes me very happy that you made them move. I was too freaked out that something might happen on the middle of the night. They need a new spot that is private not on public land, or else WAY off the beaten path. Just my opinion. But anyways, I ended up sleeping on a fairly dry tiny lil hill in the bog that is a short 4-5 mile hike after the spot you were at. Bogs are not the best for sleeping FYI.
"This is the WORST possible treatment center for your children. From the first day I stepped into the wilderness I felt uncomfortable. Not only did the staff make me feel unwelcome but also by my fellow peers. They do not prepare you adequately. Leroy is one of the head therapists. And although he does he job satisfactory, he could do it better. I could call out all the staff (Cristina, Ben) that are awful but I won’t. I’m just gonna let my experience speak for itself. I got there on November 15, 2017 (a Wednesday) I was 18 at the time. The first week was painful I wanted to go home. They didn’t feed me enough, nor did they provide the right clothing for the season. The water they provided had visible mold and mildew in it. Looking back on it its essentially a cult made to steal the parent’s money. And the longer you stay the more money they get. I was there for 19 days. However, of those 19 days I only got therapy from Leroy four days. Additionally, once I realized just how AWFUL this program is I wanted to leave. I left on December 3 and went on my way hoping to get back to the town of Bend In two days. When I was at the crossroads of NF-18 (a county road going north and south). They told me to head south for about 80 miles and I would reach Bend. It should be noted that you are not allowed to ask people on the road for assistance. They purposely told me the wrong direction. I headed south like they told me. I went 34.4 miles in two days; I reached the China Hat ATV park. I learned from a map guidebook that I was going in the wrong direction. I’ve only come to the conclusion that if I didn’t find that map I would have walked all the way to California. I don’t know how much I can express my hateridge towards this program. My only wish is for that some parent to read this and realize just how AWFUL this program is. There technique called “brain spotting” doesn’t work, plain and simple. The staff is not trained as well as they would like to believe. If you do want your children to get help send them to The Mental Health Co-Op in Houston I’m begging you don’t send them to New Vision Wilderness Therapy Very Respectfully, Jason Bouchard" .
Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed your video. I think there are other things more dangerous then bears in the woods. If you haven't read Stephan King The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon.
Funny video! I think I would have been more freaked out by the wilderness therapy group then the bears! Also 50lbs is alot. I was around 58lbs on the CDT for a week in Colorado and that's not a good combo with the elevation (being I'm from Iowa and not used to it)! Totally kicked my ace! Thanks for the video and be sure to post another one for us to watch if you hike some more!
Thinking of doing the Appalachian Trail (for a couple weeks) next sumer with a friend. Any idea how that compares to the CDT in Colorado as far as the hills and elevation changes? I am going with a lighter pack this time FOR SURE. The last time I had some stuff that was not completely necessary.
@@JeffHinnendael - I was told not to go over 30lbs. Most pro's we seen on CDT were around 20-25lbs but they are pros and can travel 25 miles through the mountains in a day. I don't think elevation is an issue with the AP but I haven't looked at the highest peaks for that trail. With the CDT we hit maybe close to 12,000 and going uphill is what killed me. I was heavy on the back as I did some mountain lake fishing (trout) in a couple lakes as well as a couple others in my group. The last night we had a fish fry over our stove! Very good trout I must say!
Robert Brumm I’d be satisfied with 100 at this point but after that, 1000 is the goal. Any other spots you like to hike in Wisconsin lemme know please!
I’ve pretty much never watched a UA-cam video that was over 10 minutes long before, but managed to watch this entire thing. Great attitude, I can’t wait for things to dry up and do some of the trail myself.
Thanks, Jeff very entertaining. Not sure if you have done more but I hope you do-you are good at this. Wondered if you had read the segment about bears in A Walk in the Woods before or after you hiked?
It's a funny thing, I was so tired after every day that I never ended up reading it. I read it back in like 5th grade and don't quite remember that bear part (I was horrible at reading in school, ADD to the max) but Im definitely going to go back thru the book before my next trip. Thanks for watching I will be sure to record my next big backpacking adventure.
Jeff, just found your video! Great job and great commentary! I’m fairly new to GreenBay and have begun backpacking the greater area from right here at Baird creek to primitive camping the UP and northern Wisconsin! Hope to see more of your adventures!
Backpacking Wilderness Adventures Thanks very much for watching my fellow back packer guy! Enjoy this summer it should be a good one, I’m hoping to get another backpacking video done.
Bravo to you my friend on the experience itself and the way you captured it. I was laughing out loud throughout. The commentary is absolutely brilliant. You certainly should be proud of yourself and thanks for documenting it so others could experience some of your journey. WELL DONE!
Awesome vid bud I'm section hiking the ice age trail myself. Started out bad but i will redeem myself. Subbed. I made the mistake and started with a 35 pound pack and tapped out after 5 miles after doing the st Croix Falls wi segment it was high ridges and high bluff hiking. The humidity was 94 percent. I lightened my pack by 12 pounds I can't imagine you carrying a 50 pound pack. Wow. My main issue was my shoulders from my pack. And getting lost lol
It took me a while to get used to the pack. I had to adjust constantly the first day until I found the right way for it to sit on my back without pulling on one specific area. Also, I'm 6'2" 200 lbs (After the hike I was about 184) so keep that in mind too cus Im a pretty big dude. Hope the rest of your hiking is going great! I am still trying to find a weekend (at least) to get out this summer or fall. Gotta love the IAT!
Bears were on my mind the WHOLE time. Ahhhh. Im almost 200 lbs and 6'2" so keep that in mind when I say that Im carrying 50 lbs. It was actually about 54 with full water. Yikes! I will trim down the pack for this falls hike.
Hahaha! I just looked up Medford on the map! It's right there! You should try the trail! Ken will always give you a lift if you need it. He's the best. KEN ROCKS!
Primitive camping is allowed, no reservations, it's a free for all. I like that about this location. Also tho, if something happens, you just might be stuck for a while cus not a lot of people, especially if you go alone like my dumb ass.

Thanks for the tip! Sometimes I thought I was going crazy talking out loud to myself all day....whatever keeps the bears away!

@@JeffHinnendael They are a cult. Literally in every sense of the definition. There are many complaints from their customers on the internet. Sad.

Good video, Jeff. I live in the Kettle Moraine near the trail and hike on it often. Dreaming of becoming a 1,000 miler....

Love your humor bro. #slipperydippery

Aw man 50lbs 😱😱 I hiked with like....35 max and that killed my feet. Glad I’m not the only one always so paranoid about bears.
