Imagine a hypothetical scenario where your ship sank and for whatever reason the only thing you have to stay afloat is a box like that...now its a horrific scenario.
I was watching this exact episode with my dad, I am very interested in marine life and just wanted to see what I pick up on and laugh about the dumb things some people say on there, I was noticing how the shark was getting really close and bumping the box, I personally like to learn more about octopis more than other animals. But even I knew that the shark bumping the box was a really major warning sign. I’m surprised that they didn’t take him out as soon as they could.
it's doing all the things you're talking about... also remember the Shark is very clearly talking Shark to the the human. Sharks communicate through body posture, even more so around carcasses so they don't get into fights with each other. So from the Shark's perspective they are speaking to a guest in their territory and the guest isn't speaking Shark back to them after multiple warnings. So the Shark just keeps speaking shark until they are heard and the intruder leaves. Don't get in the water with a big shark if you don't speak shark.
@@SHARKBYTES I was thinking about this last night... how Human Centric these things are presented from... Completely agree with all of it btw. Everything from the shark's intimidation tactics to the potential that the stroke was stress induced. You took the words right out of my mouth throughout this whole video. 👍

Just an observation, but as someone who has worked with polycarbonate for many years, it is extremely uncharacteristic of PC to shatter like this. There would usually need to be some sort of defect in the moulding/extrusion process, or the assembly of the box, for this to happen. This is more likely to happen with an acrylic or styrene bases material.
I remember seeing a BBC documentary- one that I think was just entitled 'sharks'- that commented on their body language and when you should back off. Some of it was a bit more subtle than repeatedly bashing a box though. This doesn't even feel like fuck around and find out, it feels like a "please stop putting your hand in the fire i promise you the fire is still hot." I like to joke about them but I seriously think one shark week or another, one of their presenters is going to end up dead if they keep pulling these stunts. Even if the shark wasn't preying on him, the force it hit that box could've really hurt him- or if the shards from it pierced him, he could have been in major trouble. Sincerely hope they stop doing these, not just for the sharks but before someone ends up dead.
I wonder after this incident, if they will continue to push the envelope innthese type of "Dare Devil" scenarios, each time getting a little more and more risky. Love the channel, and looking forward to more of your videos and analysis!
I do believe your hypothesis is correct. Had the shark been actively predating, Jimi would've been dead. That shark went very close to him but it is clear in the footage that it aimed more for the box than him. I must admit, however, that I really am not enjoying Shark Week content lately. This year, there were only two documentaries that I really enjoyed. The rest were terrible. The one thing I've noticed about them lately, is how each time they have an encounter with a shark, they always say "Sharks won't attack humans" or words to that effect, yet they will have these scenes of the experts underwater in their cages, and sinister music will start playing and then they edit it in such a fashion to make it look like they're in trouble, which is normally where the ad break happens. Of course, most of that blame is down to Discovery and the people who produce the final televised programmes, yet I feel such methods are just counterintuitive to the supposed message they are trying to say. (I hope that makes sense. Basically I think that the Shark Week docs are contradictory to their own message.) I really just miss the days of proper shark documentation, such as Great White Shark 1995 and the like. Simple documentaries which focus more on the sharks, and less on the hosts. It is the sudden celebrity status of the hosts on Shark Week now which I think has ruined it.
@@SHARKBYTES It also needs an "infusion" of new material; the fact that after Orcas chased off the white sharks in South Africa, seven gill sharks took over the position of main predator, I'd like to see more about THEM. I know in the SF Bay Area, seven gills are pretty formidable inshore predators, even ganging up on large prey like dolphins and seals. Heck, I remember the ones featured in a docco (shark week?, Nat Geo's shark fest? I've forgotten which) were 'sneaky' little cusses, always trying to 'trim the ponytails' of various inattentive divers. Then there's guys like Malibu Artist who's drone footage of white sharks just 'doing their thing' for hours at a time with little or no 'drama'. That being said, I appreciate some new 'fronts' being opened: there's a new gathering point for large white sharks around Point Conception, who seem to be neither related to the Red Triangle or the Guadalupe Island sharks. I would like to see more 'genetic' investigation and tagging of this population. Then there are the New Zealand white sharks. Each region seems to have a very different temperament for their sharks. I'd like to see if there are efforts to look into the populations off Chile, in the Med or Japan or off Alaska, BC and Washington and if they have any sort of familial relationships with other populations. There's lotsa good scientific stuff to be looked into without being dull or melodramatic.
The box attack was IMO territorial for sure . I'll leave the difinitive conclusions to be reached by experts like yourself . I'm here because of Hal ! Great channel .
I agree there is amazing shark research out there that a supposed scientific channel could show. But unfortunately all we get is terrible drama pushing the envelope every year. And yes most predators are territorial, so I agree the shark was defending his food.
Thank you for what you do. I saw this and was blown away. By how beautiful and powerful the shark was and by how dumb the stunt was. It's so deceiving that they did it next to the whale carcass but then edited it in this way.
Territorial. Watch "The Shallows" I personally hope Ocean Ramsey gets in the box next. Now the shark flees and doesn't get to eat the whale same thing Ramsey did. We need real scientists. Not influencers and stroked out dummies messing with sharks. Whoever put him in the box should be fired but it was ultimately Jimmy's decision I do hope he recovers from his stroke though. That's tragic.
Knowing there is a whale carcass nearby explains the shark’s actions completely. All animals can feel stressed and threatened at times. It’s up to biologists to interact with them in a way that limits such things. I’ve seen someone on a shark video climb on top of a whale carcass for close up shots of the sharks feeding. Not much surprises me anymore. 🤦🏻♂️ Great videos Kris! I love learning new things about sharks from you. ❤
I tend to back you with the territoriality action. Jimmy was kind of lucky that the shark did not continue to tell off after the box broke. Noticing that shark did not come back is a hindsight thing. I can totally understand the quick tactical retreat to be out of the water should the shark decide to come back.
4:34 that shark looks like it was going after a seal. Mouth is open, and it just blasts through that box like it wasn't there. that was by far the scariest angle. You see how close the guy was to getting bit. His knee is literally in it's mouth as it comes up. You can see his right knee get pushed up by the bottom jaw. His left knee gets pushed out of the way by the upper jaw.
Jimmy has made it blatantly clear from this stunt that he knows very little about sharks, though he's not the only one responsible for sure. But I pray he makes a full recovery anyway, very sad.
"Nurse, nurse, he's out again nurse!" Isn't there the same type of polycarbonate "box" in a marine world somewhere where, anyone willing, can get "up close" to a croc / ali g ? 🎵 Farewell & adieu to you fair Spanish ladies 🎵 Get well soon Kris 🦈
Well ofc the shark went for the giant box...it's something strange and new and big and it's near it's food source. and the whale carcas is why the shark didn't go for Jimmy or the fish around it. It had a literal feast nearby and one which was already dead so no need for wasting energy on a chase or fight with living prey.
Whale carcass nearby may not be the primary reason for the attack on the polycarbonate box. It does appear to bump the box and this is one way to test out what the object is. The shark may be testing to see if the box and human contents is edible. The attack is an apparent classic from behind and below tactic. (Sneak attack),and the shark seems to open its mouth to try and bite the human contents. How well the shark can see the box is not clear so not sure what the shark may have thought about it. As the shark got a mouthful of polycarbonate, its interest to pursue another bite probably ceased pretty quickly, hence it swam off. The other question is whether the shark appeared agitated, no hunching, no depressed fins and no open and closing of its mouth, may indicate more curiosity than anger. If the shark got a grip on the contents, well we would probably have a better idea of what its intent was. Its interesting that the shark wasn’t feeding on the whale so was it full and not interested in food. Anyway interesting questions and thank goodness no-one was bitten. We seem to be seeing a lot of divers taking liberties with large predatory sharks and someone is going to get hurt if they dont stop :(
When it comes to stupid, you can't reason or apply logic. Stupid is just that. Sad to hear he had a stroke but that's better than being eaten, I suppose.
Unfortunately it looks like it's going to take someone dying and Discovery having their "Blackfish" moment before they think about stopping these stunts.
Great analysis Kristian !! I wonder what "caused" his stroke as well. Or if the encounter in any way affected his body in a negative way. It certainly seems plausible. As usual I thoroughly enjoyed your show and I thought it was well researched and I thought you gave very reasonable observations based off the experience you have in the field. Notbsure why you're not famous yet!! You and Hal of course! In alot of way I consider you two opposite ends of the spectrum but you both seem to have respect for sharks ! I wonder 🤔...what do you think Hal would think of that whites behavior??? I honestly don't know. All I can say is it looks like he was going directly for the man but I can only speculate on whether it was territoriality, just sheer frustration at the stupid cage that was preventing him from exploring the human further lol , or predation. I wish I could get you and Hal on a shark panel 😜
Completely not a shark expert but it does occur to me that this box would be extra disturbing to a great white as it cannot smell you and can get no electromagnetic feedback from something that he can see and hear and touch. As an unknown, particularly in the vicinity of food, this strikes me as being potentially even more aggravating to a shark.
2:31 OMG- seriously- LOOK AT THE SIZE of that White shark -vs- IDIOT in box… I can’t believe those fools in the boat didn’t call him BACK to the boat!!!
Excellent analysis by Shark Bytes of a truly boneheaded stunt. Plotting up in a plastic tub near a whale carcass with a great white in the water… Haven’t they seen the 100% accurate documentary ’The Shallows’?
Hal would say "Not an attempt to predate". GW can accurately breach on seals swimming fast, if this GW was aiming for Jimmy, only moving with the tide not swimming rapidly, Jimmy would have been nailed or at least ejected from the water with the shark. Definitely an underwear changing moment, but, he was not the primary target. I wonder if the poly-acryllic was reacting with the salt water creating an electric impulse that was detected as abnormal by the GW's ampulae of Lorenzini?
I don't actually want anything bad to happen to the guy and I am really sorry for what happened to him towards the end. That said, I couldn't help but to mentally click my fingers in disappointment when the shark missed him. I am so sick of Shark Week sending out daredevil, thrill-seeking "researchers" to get footage to rival Jaws and slapping Educational on the tin when it's more like slapping a bear across the snout repeatedly to get that scary shot.
Hey just recently found out about your channel new subscriber. Also wanted to ask you have you seen a video a few years back of some dude jumping on the back of a great white shark.
Heyy - welcome to Shark Bytes, I hope you enjoy the channel 😁! I think I know the one you mean, although in the end I thought it looked more of a basking shark than a GWS!
Hi Kris. So insightful as always. Love your content. In terms of the incident with Jimmy I probably agree that this was likely to be a territorial warning given the “grand prize” food source all but a few metres away. I share your concerns about the level of danger involved in this stunt. I vaguely remember another incident where there was something similar involving a young South African shark diver who shark week gave a platform to. His name escapes me though. I personally would love to see more science based documentaries that deal with the shark’s behaviours and biology and maybe linking them to stories of attacks or predation events (as they are undeniably interesting and I’m sure make good viewing.) Thanks for another great video x
There were a couple people from my alma mater who were featured on Shark Week. New College is a very small school (with a very good marine biology program) and everyone kinda knows everyone. One gal, who graduate about ten years after I did was featured on the show in 2010 (I think) after she survived a bull shark attack in Tampa Bay. She got a wicked scar out of the encounter but didn’t suffer any lasting damage. The other New College alum who ended up on Shark Week. Melissa Marquez, is an actual shark researcher & a bit famous-She did one of those “Shark Researcher Reacts to Shark Movies” for GQ a few years back. Melissa was filming a segment for Shark Week near Florida in 2018 when she got nibbled on by another toothy critter. A 10-foot American croc latched onto her lower leg while she was diving with Discovery off the coast of Florida. She also got lucky. She suffered some ligament & never damage, if memory serves, but she kept her calm on the croc let go.

When I first saw this video, it was a shorter cut they did on UA-cam, and it didn't show the whale carcass or anything so I assumed it was a predation event, but having watched this and seen more of the interactions I think it was a combination of curiosity and frustration, with a mix of territoriality in there, too. It might not have cared what he was at all if it wasn't feeling territorial over the food, and it would have been frustrating trying to figure out what this gangly thing in the water is when you can't get close enough to it.
Just shows you how important context is right!?
Wow. Thank you for clearing up that story about the box. They left out he was tapping on the glass AND they were parked next to a whale carcass. I am with you in thinking the shark was telling him to get lost.
Glad you highlighted this incident, good to hear your point of view K
Hope you enjoyed Karen!
@@SHARKBYTES for sure, great to hear your perspective. This was a potential life threatening disaster, made for views. Keep the episodes coming as I think we forget about your channel as often some time between episode - of course realising your commitments K. Keep smiling and energised 😊🦈

Many thanks to Hal at Sharks Happen for having you on the show! That's how I found your channel and subscribed. This is only the 2nd video of yours that I've watched and I think I found a 'GEM' in your channel because you are so scientifically informative. Thank you so much! I'll be watching your other vids to get the straight scoops on sharks and shark history. 😍🥰
Great to have you here on Shark Bytes Winona!
I also found your channel from Hal on sharks happen.
Have you ever considered doing a Shark Week Darwin Awards video?
Hahahah I love this idea!
Kristian should *TOTALLY* take this advice!!!!🤣🥰♥️
Thank you for putting this all into context! Love the sharks and great to hear someone who knows what they are talking about explain things in a simple and clear manner! Keep up the good work mate!
I really miss the days when Discovery had good programming.
It needs a complete revamp in my opinion
Almost all documentaries are like that
Imagine a hypothetical scenario where your ship sank and for whatever reason the only thing you have to stay afloat is a box like that...now its a horrific scenario.
You'd have to worry about Tigers or White Tips, but not usually Great Whites
@@Tracker947 I'm the type who worries about them all...
I love sharks so much and I really appreciate your videos, king; keep up the good work :)
Thank you!!
Almost like the shark was thinking: "I've made my point."
Ignoring repeated warning signs from sharks is a baaaaad idea
Great vid as always, mate! Gotta add though, I love your shirt!
Thank you! It’s from a vintage shop from where I live
it's doing all the things you're talking about... also remember the Shark is very clearly talking Shark to the the human.
Hahahaha - I like that “don’t get in the water if you don’t speak shark”
@@SHARKBYTES I was thinking about this last night... how Human Centric these things are presented from... As a human I should be able to go and sit in the middle of an ocean and how dare a shark attack me? If you think about it from the perspective of the shark it would be like you were sitting down to a meal in your home then some random person shows up and sits in the middle of your home, refusing to talk or acknowledge you while you make greater and greater efforts to say "Dude WTF you doing in my home?"... what would you do in your own house?
Completely agree with all of it btw. Everything from the shark's intimidation tactics to the potential that the stroke was stress induced. You took the words right out of my mouth throughout this whole video. 👍
Great video loved the analysis of the clear warning bumps thanks. Over on Hal’s Sharks Happen channel he’s been talking about this territorial behaviour. Watching that Pointer bite through that box though damn. And waiting till he wasn’t looking!
A "get out of my shark lawn!" moment...
Proud subscriber! Thank you for delivering such quality content. I have a healthy respect for sharks, and I am always intrigued by their behavior. Thanks, Kristian! 😊

Hello Kristian! I followed your report with great interest. I really like the way you analyze such incidents. You should, as you do, gather all the information together and then draw conclusions from it. Thanks to your scientific and well-founded knowledge, you come to the right conclusion, which was very, very interesting for me! Thanks for that, Kristian!

What a great video! I would love to hear your thoughts on the 2018 Shark Week episode "Sharkwrecked" - the one with the two guys in open water surrounded by oceanic white tips for "as long as they could".
I watched the "box" impact scene from shark week in very slowmotion. That was awesome! But to be honest...your speaking in slowmo was awesome and very funny too!
Hope you get well cristian ❤️

@@SHARKBYTES I'm glad that you're better now :). Being sick really sucks :(, I am sick myself, is my second day being sick, even tho it isn't that grave of a problem, but I am sick, I hope I get better soon :(
Young man, my friend Hal (Sharks Happen) recommended your channel to us, and so I am subscribing to your channel! It was a real nice story!
Shark wasn't even going fast and just obliterated that box...
Just an observation, but as someone who has worked with polycarbonate for many years, it is extremely uncharacteristic of PC to shatter like this. There would usually need to be some sort of defect in the moulding/extrusion process, or the assembly of the box, for this to happen. This is more likely to happen with an acrylic or styrene bases material.
or that it was rammed by a massive great white? Just a thought
2:35 This swirl was clean though
Aesthetic
“What’s up guys welcome back to another episode of SharkBytes” I just what I love it’s one of the best sounds
I remember seeing a BBC documentary- one that I think was just entitled 'sharks'- that commented on their body language and when you should back off. Some of it was a bit more subtle than repeatedly bashing a box though. This doesn't even feel like fuck around and find out, it feels like a "please stop putting your hand in the fire i promise you the fire is still hot."
I like to joke about them but I seriously think one shark week or another, one of their presenters is going to end up dead if they keep pulling these stunts. Even if the shark wasn't preying on him, the force it hit that box could've really hurt him- or if the shards from it pierced him, he could have been in major trouble. Sincerely hope they stop doing these, not just for the sharks but before someone ends up dead.
Sharks on BBC was a great documentary!!
Basically I think that the Shark Week docs are contradictory to their own message.)
I really just miss the days of proper shark documentation, such as Great White Shark 1995 and the like. Simple documentaries which focus more on the sharks, and less on the hosts. It is the sudden celebrity status of the hosts on Shark Week now which I think has ruined it.
Shark week needs a massive revamp Adam there’s no question about that!
It’s so weird they feel the need to dramatise it all!
Thank you I love your videos!
You’re welcome! I’m glad you’re enjoying them :)
Thank you for what you do. I saw this and was blown away. By how beautiful and powerful the shark was and by how dumb the stunt was. It's so deceiving that they did it next to the whale carcass but then edited it in this way.
Spoke to Hal of shark happens and he said he's willing to do a show with you and promotes your show , so a big shout out is deserved 👌
Another great video! This is my favourite content! Shark “attacks” and an education 👌🏼
Glad you enjoyed it Kristy!
I doubt it was trying to feed as it would have acted differently and I think you nailed it.
Jimmy would be well and truly gone if it did
@@SHARKBYTES They could have put in a dummy for the same footage come to think about it they did 😜
Knowing there is a whale carcass nearby explains the shark’s actions completely.
All animals can feel stressed and threatened at times.
It’s up to biologists to interact with them in a way that limits such things.
I’ve seen someone on a shark video climb on top of a whale carcass for close up shots of the sharks feeding. Not much surprises me anymore. 🤦🏻♂️
Great videos Kris!
I love your videos and I am very glad to have discovered your channel
Shark week lost me when they started airing mocumentaries like that one Megladon lives or whatever it was. I haven't watched a shark week since.
Have you done a video on those Orca's killing that great white shark? the drone footage is pretty good, it wasn't a baby shark either.
Video coming in the next 2 weeks on this 😁 #SharkBytesExclusive
1:31 “and the whole thing is just a sh#t show” just got me laughing 😂
Jimmy has made it blatantly clear from this stunt that he knows very little about sharks, though he's not the only one responsible for sure. But I pray he makes a full recovery anyway, very sad.
You always have great rationale. Love your channel x
"Nurse, nurse, he's out again nurse!" Isn't there the same type of polycarbonate "box" in a marine world somewhere where, anyone willing, can get "up close" to a croc / ali g ?
🎵 Farewell & adieu to you fair

Get well soon Kris 🦈
Feeling a lot better now - thanks John!
Great video! I What would we do if there were no people like you who analyse events like this one.
The context of knowing the whale carcass was there is actually so important!
Very true, he lived to tell the tale
Hal seems to talk about territoriality a decent amount, so I’d hope he’d sit with me on this one - provided he had the full context of the video!
@@SHARKBYTES that's true he does! Thanks for the response Kristian 😊
Sharks
Gotta love em
Being loving them since I was in elementary school :)🦈
2:31 OMG- seriously- LOOK AT THE SIZE of that White shark -vs- IDIOT in box… I can’t believe those fools in the boat didn’t call him BACK to the boat!!!
Excellent analysis by Shark Bytes of a truly boneheaded stunt. Plotting up in a plastic tub near a whale carcass with a great white in the water… Haven’t they seen the 100% accurate documentary ’The Shallows’?
Hahahah, most definitely boneheaded
Hal would say "Not an attempt to predate". GW can accurately breach on seals swimming fast, if this GW was aiming for Jimmy, only moving with the tide not swimming rapidly, Jimmy would have been nailed or at least ejected from the water with the shark. Definitely an underwear changing moment, but, he was not the primary target. I wonder if the poly-acryllic was reacting with the salt water creating an electric impulse that was detected as abnormal by the GW's ampulae of Lorenzini?
The "sharks aren't monsters" propaganda has gone so full circle, people actually think sharks are peaceful. Stunts like this are a product of that.
You’re great mate! I really appreciate your content.
I agree, territoriality. Still very sad though
I think it’s the most logical explanation
I have to admit, I was cheering for the shark to get a Jimmy snack.
This episode really made me sad because now he can no longer dive because of that stupid stunt. He is still struggling to speak due to the stroke.
Definitely, and it makes you wonder what kind of impact this incident had on his brain! Trauma is baaad
The way the shark effortlessly cuts through that box was amazing…
Hey there, buddy! Idiotic stunt, done for views - sensationalism at its worst. Seems territorial to me.
Yeah the shortened clip was so bad, and had got millions and millions of views!
I like your synopsis here and the presentation of truth
I don't actually want anything bad to happen to the guy and I am really sorry for what happened to him towards the end. That said, I couldn't help but to mentally click my fingers in disappointment when the shark missed him. I am so sick of Shark Week sending out daredevil, thrill-seeking "researchers" to get footage to rival Jaws and slapping Educational on the tin when it's more like slapping a bear across the snout repeatedly to get that scary shot.
It’s a super weird content idea right? Like the jackass stuff as well, just absolutely stupid
Nothing beat shark week in the 90s. God I miss science being normal on TV
Good for the shark in exercising healthy boundaries and assertive communication. I hope this TV host and others watching learn from this.
I personally would love to see more science based documentaries that deal with the shark’s behaviours and biology and maybe linking them to stories of attacks or predation events (as they are undeniably interesting and I’m sure make good viewing.)
Thanks for another great video x
The Malibu Artist does some of the best drone footage including interactions with people and others.
Sensationalism. I tuned out several years ago.
New to the channel, love the content!
Hal from Sharks Happen advised this sight and he was definitely right !! I absolutely love it!!!!
