Fun fact - at one point they were going to give these films titles other than Part 1 and Part 2. The original Dune was just going to be Dune, but Part 2 had several names under consideration. Some include Dune: Prophet and Dune: Muab’dib. However, since Paul’s transformation occurs around consuming the azure water of life taken from the juvenile sand worm, it was nearly called Dune: Blue Harvest. Coincidentally that’s the working title of the original Star Wars and to avoid confusion, they just stuck with Part 2. (Also considered: Deuxne, 2UNE, and Dune 2: Dune it Again)
So its the benne gesserit that are in such precise control of their bodies that can decide on the kid's gender, and it was lady Jessica who decided to give Leto a son, selfishly and out of love, thus going against the order
I think this touches on a difficulty I have with the two movies - you don't ever really get to understand just why the Bene Gesserit are so powerful/feared, or how things work with them. The changing of the Water of Life being another example - Paul sort of mentions "she's trained to do it" but that barely touches on the actual mechanics of it. Also very little real indication that he, as Kwizatch Haderach, gets access to the full racial memory, etc. I know you have to streamline things for adaptations, but in the first movie especially they could have sacrificed some of the massive sweeping landscape shots, and the scene with the "pet" for some more exposition around what the BG are and why Paul is so dangerous.

@@davidtaylor142yeah, but it's not in any real depth. My friend, who hasn't read the books, thought it was literally just "he found out who her dad is" rather than the actual depth of it all, if that makes sense? The issue with Alia killing the Baron isn't that it is a bad scene, in fact its an amazing scene in the book - really shocking and sinister. The issue is how well can you ever translate a fully aware and articulate toddler to film. Lynch's Dune tried it and it was very odd, real uncanny valley stuff. I think Villeneuve simply wanted to avoid it. Another commenter suggested Jessica killing the Baron on Alia's behalf and, while logistically, it might of been weird to have Jessica so close to a still ongoing battle, the spirit of the original kill may have been better fulfilled.
I liked it because it I remember right (in the book) when Paul has his first prescient visions in the stilltent after the attack. He had a vision of him approaching the Baron before killing him and calling him “grandfather” which is very close to what happened in the movie. I’d like to think that it was one of the variations of paths of the future- and the movie just took a different one
Young kids might have missed Lynch’s Dune. Denis Villeneuve probably wanted to avoid being to close to that adaptation. While I prefer this Dune. I do miss the Baron flying off like stuck balloon into a sand worm. Also would have liked to hear the emperor sentenced to life in a pain amplifier.
@@alexanderforbes1452 Two movies have built to Paul avenging Leto. It's obvious because it's been Paul's motivation this entire time. Hence why it's not so strange to have that pay off at the end of Part Two.

Damn, same. Movies are BACK, baby. I love Denis' movies so much, I was so excited when he got Blade Runner and Dune because they were two film franchises from the 80s that I could never get into despite them being based on beloved books. I knew he would have the skill to pull them both off in a way that would have more broad appeal, plus he's always been obsessed with Dune since he was a kid and absolutely geeks out over it. He's not some Hollywood Journeyman director who cranks out slop that makes a consistent profit, he genuinely knows everything about this universe. Fuck, I love this movie. Gonna be the first movie I've ever gone and seen more than once in theaters.
@@IloveGorgeousGeorge I rewatched Dune 1984 to get ready for the new one-- in this case the Spice Driver fanedit which was a pleasant surprise with better pacing. I do get the sense that Villenueve's is somewhat sanitized, brought into more of this grounded and darker vision of the world with less fantastical elements. But... we're so used to having these lifeless movies made by a corporate board with a style sheet and focus test for every scene that having a clear visual identity to a work is so groundbreaking. And it helps that the vision is so entrancing. I genuinely regretted not seeing Part 1 in theaters because of the sound design, and that doesn't happen often.
That final "Lead them to Paradise" was just heartbreaking, everything could have worked out but the Great Houses wanted to be greedy. Instead, billions will die now.
What’s so interesting is, in the book, the spicing guild forces the houses to accept Paul because they take his threat with the nukes serious, so it’s just Paul and the Fremen who let things get out of control.
"Greedy" dude literally just ran a rebellion. Then is like "Don't attack or I'll do a terrorism" They don't have a clear view of everything like we the audience do.
I mean, that path was inevitable. In Paul’s visions, the only way humanity could be saved from extinction within the next few thousand years involved that Jihad.

Probably why he didn’t get many lines, he looks the part but still sounds like Walken. Only thing that took me out of the movie, but he was still good.
I think the problem with Walken is that one needs some time to see him as the role, not the actor. For me that always takes a while, but once it happens he's awesome. This role was basically just a cameo (despite his importance) and in cameos he's always "just" Walken.@@bencarlson4300

16:35 the reason we use green screen now primarily is that CMOS digital sensors have twice as many green photosites as they do blue or red. It makes for a finer end result when you’re doing compositing work. Filmmakers still use blue screens tho because green is a far more luminous color and has the negative effect of spilling a ton on the foreground when it’s lit which is not ideal.
The Giedi Prime (Harkonnen planet) aesthetic is inspired by H. R. Ginger (Famous artist and creator of the Alien design in Alien). He was originally contracted to design the Harkonnen planet designs for the first attempted Dune adaptation made by Jodorowsky. I imagine they stuck to that aesthetic as a homage - which works absolutely beautifully. Absolutely stunning visuals in an already visually stunning film.

I actually loved Walken as the emperor, just an odd old man twisted around the fingers of the bene. I get that some people can’t separate some actors from their roles, but to me it was actually perfect.
I will say that it occurred to me afterwards-- having Kyle Maclachlan as Emperor Shaddam IV might have taken me out of the moment but I would have loved it.
Someone like Charles Dance would've brought a lot more presence to the role of The Emperor. Wish a few more blockbusters were as tactile & grounded as both Dune movies! The visuals are obviously incredible but dialogue's still important, both go hand-in-hand to make a truly great movie!
With that said Denis being very purposeful and particular may have Christopher Walken have a muted less dominating presence to hint that he's just another pawn to the Bene Gesserit? he may hold all the power in the universe but he's just a man in the end
Charles Dance would not work for the Emperor at all. Bc the Emperor in dune is not Palpatine or Tywin, he’s a weak jealous man that easily manipulated by other more powerful people

The spice not only allows guild navigation and mind expansion but it also increases lifespan by 3 to 4x and you dont get sick. These movies didnt really make that clear
Idk if that happens in the movies. The Emperor looks pretty old. Although to be fair, thats intentional to emphasoze the frailty and corruption of House Corrino, opening up an opportunity for a new house to take over

I can confirm that the reviewers Mason mentioned are incorrect. Somehow I made it this far without seeing the first Dune. I meant to then decided to wait till just before seeing part 2. However a friend wanted to go and I just didn't have time before the day we went. I read a quick recap of the important names I needed to know but otherwise I went in almost cold. Took me a minute but it wasn't all that difficult to follow. I think it is because Denis knows how to tell a visual story. There was never a point I felt lost and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm going to watch part 1 then go back and see part 2 again and see if it makes a difference actually seeing the first one.
16:15 The shift to green-screens is mostly because digital cameras tend to have twice as many photosensors for green as they do for blue (Bayer patterns) so green screen is less "noisy" and error prone than blue-screens. Green is also closer to the centre of the human perceptual range so it tends to have more balanced lighting (particularly under lighting with black-body profiles where red is overlit, blue is underlit and green is just right).
I feel so bad for Walken, because he is a good actor and he was well cast for the role. But he did so well as an SNL host, that he can't be taken seriously anymore!

there is probably an in book explanation, but i dont understand why anybody lets those scheming witches hang around and doesnt go full order 66 on them.
Just FYI, it was detailed exactly how one rides a worm in the books. You have to hook a scale, exposing it to the sand so the worm rotates and you ride it to the top. This also prevents the worm from submerging under the sand and allows you to guide the direction it travels.
Yes you’re right. But I don’t remember them taking about how to get 30-50 other people on the back of the worm including Jessica’s little pod thing. Any ideas?

Big book fan, and I still loved the movie. Part 1 stayed mostly true to the book, while part 2 definitely ventured off more. The changes are more intriguing to me to see how he’s going to wrap this up, since they definitely have future ramifications and he’s only doing 1 more movie. Most of the changes, other than the ending, revolved around not having the small time jump so I can understand why they were made with that in mind. Cant wait for part 3!
The only thing that didn't sit well for me was Paul being Harkonnen. Like, I didn't get the point if the twist. Being Harkonnen didn't give them any advantage, Paul just kills them like he wouldve if they weren't related anyway.
@@l8on675 It ties in with the Kwisatz Haderach thing. He was supposed to be a girl that has a child with a Harkonnen to create the Kwisatz Haderach, but it turns out that he already had Harkonnen genes from his mother and the plan skips a generation.
@@Phoenixflame87 Looking more into it, I think I get the Harkonnen reveal more in that it was Paul's que to put aside Leto's "" lead with your heart" example and use more brutal tactics to win the war like a Harkonnen would. Without the reveal, Paul may have relied on more diplomatic means and failed.
Honestly I found the last act kind of weird, becuase Paul just feels like a completely different character. Is he a different character becuase the weight of war has taken its toll on him or du(n)e to the responsibility he feels as a messiah to the Fremen? Has his quest for revenge taken him down this dark path of which there is no going back? 12:39 That's funny because apparently the name _Harkonnen_ was inspired by the Finnish surname _Härkönen_ (which is also a verification that the way it's pronounced in Villeneuve's movies is the correct way)
As someone that was also put off by Christopher Walken, after thinking about it I've begun to suspect that we're meant to not take the Emperor seriously as he's shown to be an unwitting pawn of the machinations of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. Not sure if that's the actual motivation, but it helps me accept it more.

Paused at 15:26 for some pedantry: The process of riding a sandworm isn't vague at all in the books. You attract the worms with thumpers, you get on, You use the hooks to separate the join of the segments; the worms don't want sand getting in there so they roll to keep that bit on top. This behaviour can be used to steer the worm as well
I also saw it in D-Box but I didn't plan for it. Booked the double feature for me and my mates and didn't even see that I booked the D-Box row. I doubt it will be that long honestly. From 2013-2017 Denis did 1 movie every year up until blade runner 2049, and probably took a few years to convince the studios to let him make dune as a 2 parter after blade runner lost them so much money, plus both dunes were hampered by the pandemic. 21:30 The thing about movie-Chani ... to me it felt more like she ran away and left Paul because he said he'd marry the emperor's daughter. Yes... I know she was also meant to be against the whole messiah-shtick and all that, but the way things played out at the end, it felt more like she was mad about getting "dumped". Which, of course, is not what happens in the book even though she does stay and accepts her role as a concubine. OTOH, this might also be sequel-bait, leaving one more thread dangling at the end of part 2. I think Villeneuve already stated that he wants to do Dune Part 3 to conclude the story - and I do hope he'll get the chance to do it. I mean... part 2's ending might not be as abrupt as part 1's but it too kinda cuts away in the middle of the story and it certainly doesn't give you a nice "and they all lived happily ever after" type of ending.
I disagree, the "dumping" sure had a hand in her feelings, but leaving as she sees her people going on a warpath, the very warpath she warned of and was ignored, shows through too.
I think James needs to understand that Walken was destined for this role since he starred in the music video for Fat Boy Slim's Weapon of Choice and the lyrics are literally about Dune.

Fuck, this got me hahaha
Ha believed every word until the last sentence

So its the benne gesserit that are in such precise control of their bodies that can decide on the kid's gender, and it was lady Jessica who decided to give Leto a son, selfishly and out of love, thus going against the order
It was a selfish move. She was trying to producing a non-Harkonnen Kwisatz Hadderach.
@@thescottishaccent they mentioned the racial memory thing. That's how he revealed the Harkonnen bloodline

I sure love Paul's rise to power. Seems like a very cool guy who would never do a genocide or two
The issue with Alia killing the Baron isn't that it is a bad scene, in fact its an amazing scene in the book - really shocking and sinister.
The “you die like an animal” was ironically fucking metal
Jessica killing him actually sounds really good to me as an alternative to Alia. Better than Paul, which feels a bit obvious.
@@alexanderforbes1452 Two movies have built to Paul avenging Leto. It's obvious because it's been Paul's motivation this entire time. Hence why it's not so strange to have that pay off at the end of Part Two.
I went in with 'middling' expectations (I expected a well-crafted film by a talented director). I was not prepared for every single shot to be so perfect and iconic. I felt like I was in a trance the whole time, a very impressive movie.
Damn, same. Movies are BACK, baby. I love Denis' movies so much, I was so excited when he got Blade Runner and Dune because they were two film franchises from the 80s that I could never get into despite them being based on beloved books.

Nah, we all know it was Charli XCX who started the whole greenscreen thing
The Giedi Prime (Harkonnen planet) aesthetic is inspired by H. R. Ginger (Famous artist and creator of the Alien design in Alien). He was originally contracted to design the Harkonnen planet designs for the first attempted Dune adaptation made by Jodorowsky.

I gotta say, I kept that shit on max level throughout both movies and I fucking loved it. Dune is already such a physical experience and the added impacts and shocks made the action scenes (especially that first worm riding scene) incredibly intense. The weed helped, too.
Star Wars borrowed from dune, book came out 1965 and Star Wars was in 1977. Inspired, borrowed, stole, however you wanna put it dune came first.
He’s Duke Skywalker
Just got back from the theater, I’m going back tomorrow.. lmao. And probably another few times.. rarely do I watch movies multiple times on the big screen, only when they are truly spectacular do I feel that need of seeing it again and again. This was an 11/10 for me. I’m so happy you all got to feel and experience the same thing I did. The whole movie I was in awe and many scenes made my jaw drop. Can’t wait for tomorrow! 😭
40 years of watching movies and i’ll honestly say I just watched one of the best movies ive ever seen.
Its hard to express but I feel like I watched a masterpiece and I haven’t felt like that in…a long…long time
It’s amazing how many people try to say Dune ‘inspired’ Star Wars, or that Star Wars ‘borrowed’ things from Dune, rather than admitting that Lucas callously stole main story beats from Herbert’s masterpiece and attempted to pass them off as his own.
I'm happy to wait the 5 or 6 years till Part 3. It will be the Best Trilogy Ever!
I doubt it will be that long honestly. From 2013-2017 Denis did 1 movie every year up until blade runner 2049, and probably took a few years to convince the studios to let him make dune as a 2 parter after blade runner lost them so much money, plus both dunes were hampered by the pandemic.
Honestly, if Denis is feeling up to it, I could see it releasing in the next 2 years
@@nicklafleur7620 DV signed on as director for Dune in Feb 17 so he was doing it even before Blade Runner came out. Of course that was supposed to come out in 2020 before being delayed so only 3 years after BR 2049.
Should’ve had Brian cox as Emperor
You Freman are not serious people
Brian cox the physicist
Walken took me out of it unfortunately and my question is how do they get off the worm especially when you got lots of old people and those baskets. How do they get all them off without being brutally hurt. Jump and roll I guess lol
Apparently they tire them out? I assume the worms just stop, maybe they also make the worms stop which is how they can get on them too.
In the books they ride them till they're exhausted, then call another. But seeing as how these movies are not like the books, they'll probably parachute off of em.
Oh yea forgot about the tiring them out haven't read the book in years. Thanks for the clarification @@dallasbhowell
how do they set up tents and shit on them in the first place
i laughed every time christopher walken talked in the movie. It feels like a meme
The first time I saw it, I was like yeah this is great. The 2nd time, omg I couldn’t believe how amazing it was. Almost flawless. Definitely one of the pillars of Sci-Fi from now on.
Okay it might have been in the appendices but the method of mounting and riding a worm is very well covered in the book.
7:37 they also printed the Batman to film and scanned it back to digital. It’s the first movie I heard that did that
I loved the part where Paul and the Fremen said, "It's Paulin' time," and completely Pauled on 60 billion people
No more of this meme, no more!!!Just stop, I beg you
is this still funny
In an ideal world (if he hadn’t died years ago) I think David Bowie would have made the perfect emperor in Dune
"I haven't seen anything as visually arresting since Argyll" should probably go on all the posters and physical media.
I think James needs to understand that Walken was destined for this role since he starred in the music video for Fat Boy Slim's Weapon of Choice and the lyrics are literally about Dune.
Holy shit the lyrics make sense now I've always thought that we're just nonsense
Can't watch this review yet, haven't seen it but very excited!!
Just wanted to say hi.
Hi everyone 👋
HELLO LUKE
@@mrsundaymovies 👋
I have now watched it an absolutely loved it.
Also loved your review so double ruddy whammy
Listening to people talk about Dune who don’t actually know anything about Dune has turned into the bane of my existence
