We had to watch one being done (video from the 1950s) exactly as you describe here in my psych class in high school in the early 1980s. It was horrific to watch. The young man was asked to say his name and a couple of sentences, and he seemed fine and then they did the procedure, and then he was asked a couple of questions, and from that point forward everything he said was monotone. So heart wrenching.
I’ve heard too that this was particularly common in women that were deemed “hysterical”.
this procedure is barbaric!
I know 😢. It’s so sad to see. I work in mental health and I’ve seen I’ve worked with patients who have had that procedure.

If a lobotomy were done to someone like myself, I'd just go brain dead. I have a condition called ACC (agenesis of the corpus callosum). I don't have the central connection between both halves of the brain, as well as some big gaps in the middle-back and left-rear hemisphere of the brain. My neurologist told me, that I technically should have been born one of three ways... a living vegetable, have multiple personality disorder or stillborn,but nope . The effects i have is kind of like... Everything working in slow-motion. Basically a slow learning curve, compared to everyone else.

Yes, ECT is still used for resistant cases of major depressive disorder. It's no longer like one flew over the cuckoo's nest anymore though.
