How we fixed our 2016 VW Passat 1.8 tsi low coolant issue. We were having an issue where we’d have a low coolant light come on every couple of weeks. We brought it in to get checked, no leaks. The only component not tested with the pressure test was the cap, we changed the cap and the problem hasn’t come back.

I’m having this issue right now, I’ve been to two shops in the last week and when I googled it they mentioned head gasket issues smh, going to try this now!

Crazy it was the cap. I'm working on my 2011 VW Jetta now. Coolant reservoir looks good, but I might just replace since it's only $23 for a new one. One hose has some discoloration which I will replace as well, but I have to trace it all the way through the other lines and engine. But parked, the coolant leaks directly below the right front passenger tire, so it's somewhere on that side that is causing the level to drop consistently. Just started happening so I'm trying to assess myself before having VW dealership charge me $600.

Same issue. After short run if 10 miles, "Low Coolant Lever" alert and coolant is found to have gone from full to dangerously low level. Refill, and repeat 10 mile run and same issue returns. Subsequent visible leak inspection shows wetness under coolant bottle and just a few drops on floor beneath area of bottle. Bought a new cap for 10$ but I want to test if original 4 year-old cap is faulty. How to test for faulty cap pressure level? Why? If I cannot prove the original 4yr cap is faulty, there has to be a fault somewhere still lurking ! Vehicle 2018 Arteon 2.0L Petrol.

The cap can cause to have a pressure on coolant system when the cap does not work doe to age or broke

Is there a radiator cap on these vehicles? I'm trying to fix what I believe to be a radiator leak by using sealant. Directions say pour directly into radiator. But can't find spot.

Do a 'sniff test' on the coolant could be a head gasket

Hi, I've recently notice lower coolant levels on my pd105 anyway have looked around can't see any coolant leaking. I have changed the cap and will see how it goes but the new cap isn't a very tight fit compared to the other one, or doesn't click into place when tight. The new one just stops at the stop. Is yours a tight fit or just stops almost hits a wall feeling? Cheers

Can you confirm that this fixed the issue? Or are you still having issues with the cars? I have a 2017 GLI and about 2 weeks ago it was just above the minimum line and tonight it threw a check coolant warning at me just as I had got home. I have yet to investigate if there is some other issue, I just got the car from a reputable dealer and figured there likely wasn't anything wrong with it, I'm going to follow up with them after I check under the hood and conduct my own investigation.

Hi i have the following technique did once when changing the coolant of the mk4 2.0 golf; For like 15 minutes, the engine is On and i accelerate hard each 3 seconds with the drain port open emptying the used coolant but at the same time im filling the coolant from upperside ( were we add coolant) with a an average garden (mineral water) hose with normal water flowing, and we check down till all the drained strange color dissapears. After this process, never had a problem using the car on average but i just did it once, you recommend me to do this again?, or should i just limit to change the coolant without this other cleaning method?, thanks in advance!

Good idea to check or clean the cap sealing surface

I just changed my radiator and now my coolant steams out the coolant cap and I could hear it boiling/pressure . What do you think the problem would be with the thermostat or a blown head gasket??. I start the car and within 5 minutes of driving it starts steaming and boiling

Is there meant to be a gasket on these caps? I have the same issue, but I noticed i dont have an o-ring/gasket on my cap. Is this normal, as i can find on eBay gaskets for the coolant caps? I'm a bit confused?! Thanks for the advice!!

  • @ironbloodedmyth1204

In my Mk5 R32 I had a coolant leak from the expansion tank so i changed it, but 2 days in and i noticed my coolant disappeared no leaks so im puzzled maybe the cap i didn't change it to a new one with o ring ill try that.

  • @ajmendez3887

What kind of coolant did you use? and What brand?

  • @mitshumarner5870

I had numerous refills and top offs with my 2022 Taos. This might explain why. One VW dealer told me that these cars consume coolant normally. That sounded ridiculous!

I think the issue can be very different, dependihrg on the symptoms.

  • @user-tq6cn9dj3z

But does the check engine light come on if it is the radiator cap?
