    Glad to hear you've been looked after by the VW network Sam.
    Just goes to show, the vlog on end user self maintenance for the R that you've been doing has avoided what could have been unnecessary repairs, should you had not noticed the drop in coolant levels and the helpful comments from many of your subscribers. As you mentioned, weekly checks all round are always worth it. Good update👍
    BTW - On next service I would ask for a coolant change just to be sure everything is at the correct strength and level etc prior or post winter when engine conditions are that bit more tougher on the running gear......

      Thanks AJ.Yep 100% its a good success story and the community is better than the dealer for sure. VW have been fine but I do get the feeling they are just too busy with other customers to really focus on certain issues...…...unless you push them. Really helpful from yourself and the other subscribers here for the advice :-)If the coolant level stays static over the next few months your right I plan to drop it in to VW regardless just to give it a check over. Maybe late October time.Thanks for the comment !

    Nice video Sam. Adding water (hope it was distilled) is fine for that amount as it will have a negligible effect on the properties of the coolant. Apparently, the dealers have a technical memo directing them to top up beyond the 'max' line, to the seam of the chamber, to allow for airlock release over the first 15k miles. On a future video can you give some information on your current tyres re type and tread wear please?

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  6 років тому

      Thanks for the feedback and I hope they followed the right steps. I was worried they added too much but I'm sure the mechanic followed the right steps...……..he did ask me if I had added water to it before, presumably to be careful not to add too much on top of that, which I hadn't so hopefully all is good.Sure - Ill do a video specific on tyres as I have touched on it a bit in other videos but not specifically around tyres (watch this space :-) ). In the mean time I think the closest video I have had where I touch upon the tyres is in my video -

    Hi Sam. I have a 2015 Golf 7 GTI. I was losing coolant and oil at the end of 2021. Turned out to be water pump. Replaced it. Oil is perfect now but I do have to top up my coolant every 2 to 3 weeks. The car is also tuned. That, combined with my spirited driving is what I'd like to attribute the loss of coolant to. I do get abit worried but I see so many videos of people with the EA888 engine experiencing this problem. The water pump with the plastic housing that these cars come with is quite shite.
    Anyway, lovely video man. Beautiful car.

      Thank you for sharing your feedback with your GTI! Yours is a great car and I do feel the EA888 is a fantastic engine it is just a shame about the water pump and thermostat housing. As you say, driven slowly I feel would help increase the lifespan but even then it is still likely to fail over time. Many thanks again for the positive feedback towards the channel and I myself am still loving my 7R 👍

    Not watched your video yet but it's a common problem on these engines. It happened on my 2014 cupra. I needed a new water pump and housing. Mine was out of Warrenty but I got a good will gesture. Worrying it's still happening on 2016 models.

      Thanks for the info. I will keep a close eye on it and as it is in warranty ill push the dealer if a problem occurs...…..I guess a car like this will get through fluids more than your standard Golf so I am not sure there is any major issue as yet.Thanks for the comment !

      I've not noticed any coolant lose before it went wrong or since it's been fixed.
      At the start I could smell alcohol and thought it was the washer jets. By the time it was loosing it quite quickly I could no longer smell it but there was occasionally drips under the car. I'd put this down to AC condensate previously.
      My Seat dealership identified it first time.
      I'm sure you'll get it sorted and you've got the benefit of Warranty!

    A VERY common problem. The waterpump/thermostat housing is made out of cheap plastic.VW have modified it several times, I work for a London Audi dealer and the S3 has the latest updated one,maybe the Golf will follow. A decent dealer will top it up with distilled water(they all have it) and replace it if it is leaking.

      is it ok to top up the reservoir bottle with only Distilled Water if it's on the Min. Line? or should I buy the coolant from my auto parts store? (I can't get to a dealer for a few weeks and I'm scared it will have issues if I don't do something soon)

  • @TheMarkwrx

    I could smell coolant when mine was hot so I took it to the dealers and they pressure tested the system for me.they told me to book it back in as it lost pressure and needed further investigation. I took it back and they couldn’t find anything wrong and I’ve not had the coolant smell since!!

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for letting us know your experience :-) Its a strange one and Ill definitely be keeping an eye on it...…….the engine gets really hot and I know the EA888 engine heats up quickly (one of its cool quirks to reduce the time the engine is cold) and other than the engine being really hot (even a few hours after a long drive) I have not noticed any strange smells or leaks or anything untoward.I thinks its a great engine based on what I've read and the amount of models it is in so I am hoping I am in safe hands ! Ill push it on my dealer if I spot anything further over the coming months particularly as we are not too far away from colder weather sadly :-(Thanks for the comment !

    I've never know a modern VW that uses coolant, it's no coincidence that owners of cars with the EA888 engine like 7R complain about low coolant and that this engine is the first VW high performance engine to suffer leaks on a regular basis from the thermostat housing. It's not question of if but when it will leak and if coolant level is low IT IS LEAKING! Initially you won't see much evidence but you might smell the infamous curry smell after a long drive, in bad cases it will be dripping off the undertray. If you've got warranty and it's losing coolant, record this with VW before warranty expires because it's not right. There should be a recall as it affects all EA888 cars inc. 1.8 TSI

      Min level and red warning light came one. Fear the worst. Taking Golf R in for 30k inspection in a couple of months. . Your right never seen any car loose that much coolant unless it's leaking. We'll see but it's under warranty for the next 47000 miles. Would have never bought the Golf R with out that 72K warranty. That dam water pump always fails.

    Maybe they just topped it up with water when you had it serviced before and that's why it's gone down so fast. I had my car serviced in January and they topped it up then and after doing 8000 miles since mine was nearly on min so I bought some online for 15 pound.. VW G13 ready mixed. Main dealers suck and are only good for a service stamp in your book :)

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  6 років тому

      You might be right on that one - Ill read over the report to see if they did flag or mention any work on the coolant (maybe it might say they topped it up). 100% if it goes down over the next few weeks/months Ill push hard so they don't just fob me off with a top off and check the water/coolant pump as well as the housing around it. I have heard Comma Xstream GG40 Antifreeze Concentrate is the preferred one to go for and its around £18 for 2L. Not sure if its any different to the one you have mentioned but Ill definitely get something going forward !Agreed I have found the dealers don't really share the same passion or interest overall (I guess they are too busy churning through customer after customer) which is a shame really.Thanks for the comment ! :-)

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  3 роки тому +1

      Known issue but no recall. They are just weak and leak. The issue I hear is it's not something that can be repaired you have to replace the whole unit which is where the frustration comes from this. Its around £600 but could fair again. That said mine has been fine after nearly 4 years 👍

    • @adams7405
      @adams7405 3 роки тому +1

      No recall but modified to higher spec.If you had a S3 you can come to my Audi dealer and if it is leaking have it replaced under goodwill.Cost if unlucky is about £400,that is fitted,new coolant,DISTILLED water all in.Not refused a claim,and I process all the warranty for my group.Time to find a decent VW dealer,not a woeful one,they are out there I think............

    Hello Sam, I have the same problem folkswagen gtd7. The fluid dissappears under the pressure. It appears on the lid. The engine is ok, can you tell me, what could be the problem. Greetings from Bosnia. Marko

    • @SamAustin
      @SamAustin  3 роки тому

      It seems to be quite a common problem. Unfortunately it appears to be due to a leaking thermostat housing. Mine seems to have just been a one off as a couple of years have past since this video and all has been fine. I have heard the only fix is to replace this (I believe around £600 at a dealer) but it could also just need a refill and you can go on your way. If it happens a large amount all I can say is get it checked over by a specialist or a main dealer and allow them to make the verdict but you are not alone in this issue. It can also be based on your driving style / distance. Mine seems to be better with long running whereas I used to do short miles quite often when this happened to me. Hopefully it's nothing major and all will be okay with yours👍

    I have a Golf Mk7 2.0 TDI from 2013, which
    Started overheating. The gauge goes from 90 to 120-130 in just a few seconds and then goes back down as fast after staying there for a while. There's no pattern to it, it can happen after 3 hours of driving like after 4 minutes of standing still.
    I have changed thermostat and coolant temperature sensor but the temperature still rises to 130°.
    No white smoke from the exhaust and no bubbles in the coolant container.
    I read on the forums and people have the same problem as me, and they changed the water pump but they still have the same problem.
    So it's stupid for me to change the water pump and the problem won't be solved.
