  • I meant Scott, not Matt, when I reference it in the video. My bad. Sorry. Thank you for the reminder!!!
    After many recommendations, I didn't know this song and wanted to listen to something completely fresh to my ears. The harmony is still bouncing around inside my head. Love it!

    Scott really loves Mitch’s high notes. Watch how at the beginning how Scott keeps looking at Mitch. And it’s not just watching, there is a connection there. During a segment of Superfruit they asked each other what they liked best about the other. Scott’s response was that he loved Mitch’s eyebrows. They are truly beautiful.

    Many times in interviews, Scott has referred to "that impossible thing Mitch does with his voice"... I'm assuming that he's referring to Mitch's knack for seamlessly (and seemingly, effortlessly) switching back and forth between his chest and head voice, which is on beautiful exhibition in this song.

  • @tamarasmith9060
    @tamarasmith9060 4 роки тому +44

    It does sound so interesting & pretty doesn't it? Mitch's ability to quickly switch up & down the scale or between chest, head, or mixed voice have been commented on multiple times by singing coaches doing PTX reactions.
    Once you get familiar with the wide range of songs they've done between their regular & Christmas stuff, you do see how the group really does have times where they let everyone shine & show the extent of all their abilities. This is one where they rightly put Mitch as the sole lead. Kirstie could've done the same notes, but it wouldn't have sounded right. Her voice even on high tight notes has a slightly richer vibration than Mitch's. His voice is the one you use when you want that sharp, clear sound like a flute/bird whistle/glass bell in a song. Actually that difference between them is what makes for some pretty & interesting sounds in other songs, as they harmonize or switch back & forth on which is leading & which is doing backup. Having sung not just with others but together since they were kids, the trio already had a lot of experience when PTX was formed on how to harmonize & support each other to get the best sounds. That's why Scott & Mitch also sound so great together on their Superfruit music.

    Sorry for my thousand comments. I’m just responding as I watch. The yodeling comparison is something that hadn’t occurred to me. But it’s totally true. Oddly enough. Also mitch and scott’s side group, Superfruit, has some amazing music that is not a cappella and it’s wonderful and funny. Their song/video “Guy.exe” is amazing, hilarious and catchy. Definitely something to check out at some point. Also their hip hop goes broadway videos.

    • @fredneckteddy

      i totally agree with you. the "yodel" sounds like when Mitch is switching between registers. He's going from full chest to mix or head and back......

    Your take on Mitch with the yodeling comparison is spot on! He has such exceptional control between his registers, and most people don't understand how technically difficult yodeling is. And then he's actually carrying words in those breaks. Ugh! GREAT take on this!

  • @ullahoffmann6307
    @ullahoffmann6307 4 роки тому +62

    Yes, please check out some more of them ... even after a break - by the way Mitch was kind of emulating what Kiara did by using autotune, only he can do it with his voice ... - Greetings from Germany and Thanks for your reaction!

    • @bill.godwin-austen
      @bill.godwin-austen 4 роки тому +21

      The technique used by Kiiara in this song was a combination of sampling and looping (autotune is fine-tuning pitch problems in post production). When she performs this song live in concert, she doesn't even sing the "roof is fallin'..." refrain, it's done on a sampler keyboard by her keyboard player in the band. Mitch does it live, as casually as you please! :)

    Scott Kirstie and Mitch are litterally childhood friends from TX.
    They acquired Avi (who is from California) and Kevin (who is from Kentucky but was attending YALE and had just graduated Pre-Med) for the Acapella singing competition The Sing Off. They competed and WON season 3
    They are AMAZING at what they do!!🌟

    The beauty of this cover is not only how easy it is for Mitch to sing that pretty-ly or how in sync they all are so they can so easily trade notes to create the intricate difference in sounds at the end, or how perfectly the beatboxing and bass complement the arrangement. It's actually the original song itself. The original is a highly computerized, digitized song. It's incredible they can even recreate it at all...let alone this well!

    (And don't worry about Kevin when you watch, he is putting away his cello after his cello-boxing solo -yes he plays cello WHILE BEATBOXING, he also plays saxophone, speaks mandarin, was premed at Yale... the guy is massively talented - until it starts... And the fan just doesn't zoom out, but you can hear him.)

    I listen to this song in repeat sometimes. And again, go and listen to the original for a comparison. And watching the sing off series is the best way to get their start. They won the show and lost the recording contract the next week and started their youtube/social media campaigns and I think daft punk was their breakout video/performance. As you were informed in the comments (I’m sure), they recorded it in their apartment for a tiny budget and won a freaking Grammy. They are literally an amazing success story with insane hard work, dedication and talent.

    I would be thrilled to see your reaction to Dimash Kudiabergen, an unbelievable artist from Kazakhstan. He is often referred to as the Best Singer in the World. Brace yourself, you are in for musical delight. Dimash has a 6 octive vocal range, sings in 12 languages, plays multiple instruments, is classically trained since the age of 5. He just turned 26 years old. He has fans all over the world. The song SOS is a great one to listen to first. Dimash has an official channel where you can find this song. Cliffnotes: Mitch, Scott and Kirsten have been friends and singing together since middle school. Avi and Kevin joined when Scott signed them up for first season of The Sign Off which they won. Couple Grammys later ... Have been perfection ever since. 😊 Avi left to pursue solo career b/c their schedule has been nonstop for years. Matt joined to step into bass role.

    To me, the brilliance in this song is of course, Mitch, and the background swells-using dynamics in such a beautiful way. And Scott (not Matt) certainly did do a brilliant job of supporting and not leading as he usually does.

    Mitch is known for changes registers without the hitch that many others do. He moves from chest to head to head/chest mixes without a hitch. The original performer had.to use digital over lays and other electronic tricks to do what Mitch do without the electric assist.

    If you want the complete Pentatonix experience and to know how they started, you can watch their Sing Off performances. The Trio, as they sometimes call themselves, are Scott, Kirstie and Mitch. They were friends from a young age and attended the same high school in Arlington, TX where they were in choir together. There is a video of the three of them doing a cover of Telephone in the school auditorium. Scott and Kirstie graduated a year ahead of Mitch and went to different colleges. Scott went to USC where he met Ben Bram, who encouraged him to try out for the Sing Off. Scott called Kirstie and Mitch to come to LA. But they needed at least five to compete. Bram introduced Scott to Avi. Scott found Kevin through a UA-cam video of Kevin beat boxing and playing the cello. They all met a couple of days before the auditions, put together some arrangements and made the show. Bram helped them with the arrangements, and still does. They won the Sing Off, and the rest is history.

    when you say you want a beer after all that red wine, I immediately think of Home Free (bcoz of Champagne Taste (on a beer budget))...
    They're the first COUNTRY aca pella group and that's what set them apart from all the acapella groups here in YT.
    You definitely need to check Voiceplay, well, after you check more of Home Free videos. For me, PTX, Home Free and Voiceplay are the perfect triad of acapella groups, you'll never get tired of listening to them.
    I see a lot of people recommending PTX's Sing off performances. You should check them out as this is a good way to see them grow.
    Also on how they basically won that competition in their 1st performance.

    Well, it all began in the DFW suburb of Arlington, TX where the trio went to high school together. They performed together with Avi & Kevin for the first time when they auditioned for The Sing Off season 3. So that set of 10 or so vids is where Pentatonix began developing their style. My favorite originals are “New Years Day”, “Sing”, “Rather Be” and “Light in the Hallway” which is a lullaby!! Cant wait to see what you choose next!

    I'm an older guy myself and Pentatonix are who got me into watching reaction videos and watching reaction videos is how I got into watching Kpop.
    You mentioned a palette cleanse and if you haven't watched any before I'd highly recommend watching some Kpop MVs. I think with your performing background that you would really appreciate the full spectrum of talents that they are bringing to bear.
    Idol Groups (as they're known in South Korea) are formed by entertainment companies from a pool of trainees that train for years with the company in the hopes of debuting as a solo artist or in a group. Each member of the group has to be able to sing and dance to a very high level and some of the members train to be rappers as most songs have a rap component. They also get trained in acting/performing and many idols also act in TV dramas or movies.
    Almost every song has choreography to go with it so they have to sing and dance live when performing at concerts or on music shows.
    It's pop music but taken to the Nth degree.
    For a girl group song I would recommend Kill This Love by Blackpink and for a boy group song I would recommend Dope by BTS. Dope is a bit of an older song now but I feel it's a good intro into BTS as you can see their dancing more.

    absolutely love your reactions!!! I have their cds that I listen to in my car, and its easy to sing along with the leads.... but to get an idea of exactly how difficult and see how much is put into each song by these crazy insane talented individuals just try to only sing along with the "back up singers" .
    I was listening to New Rules/Are you that Somebody... and I could not keep up with Mitch and Kirstie in all their switch ups from singing words to doing the Do do la la and then singing again. So I think to get an idea of how difficult it is to do the arrangements try singing JUST the background support! I have only been a Pentaholic a short time, but at my young age of 56 I feel like a teenager again when it comes to this group of kids. I am absolutely in love {not in a disgusting way, rather as a proud Momma}... in my whole life I have never been this obsessed with and in awe of any performers. I am almost ashamed to admit this! lol
    I do like the way you react to them.... intelligently, and well spoken. I don't get bored, and I like the way you actually take in everything they are doing and react to that... some reactors are not nearly as easy to watch (talking over the performance and missing things}.....and easy on the eyes too....sorry..lol not sorry!

    I realize this is TLDR but my recommendation, if you really want to see their progression all the way from the VERY beginning, is as follows: start with Scott, Mitch & Kirstie's high school cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone" (there seem to be two versions - a video they recorded in for some singing contest they didn't win, and a school chorale/choir show performance); then watch Kevin's first major viral "celloboxing" UA-cam video, which he filmed in his Yale dorm room - this is how the "trio" found him when they were looking for a beatboxer to round out their 5 member group requirement to enter The Sing Off; then you should go through their Sing Off performances in order (I personally like to watch the versions with the judges comments to see how they incorporate that advice into following performances); all before starting their early UA-cam channel uploads.

    This is how they sit when they are arranging as well if you ever want to see that you can watch ptxperience which is backstage and bts of their tours. its pretty cool if you want to get to know them a bit more individually as well. you can do that on your own or you can react to it ofc i just think its good to help you get to know them.

    Dude... vintage wine gets better with age...dontcha know? But I understand what you mean. On another note (smile) isn't it great to have a Pentatonix earwom stuck in your head and even after days of it, it never gets old! Yea, you know what I mean. 💜

    You really need to listen to Pentatonix version of Say Something. You get Kevin’s Cello and he sings at the end. Everything the do is wonderful.

    I'm not sure if you meant Scott or Avi. I assume Scott since Avi is usually supporting Kevin amd vice versa. So, after your beer, you might want to check out their Sing Off episodes. You will get the background and history you are looking for there. Any Pentaholic can give you a play by play rundown of their history, but if you are looking to see it unfold from the beginning when they were just baby geniuses, Sing Off is the way to go. Believe me, we will watch. I am not a fan of the original of this song, nor did I even know it existed until this cover came out. My ear immediately understood tho that it was very complex. There are so many layers and everything is placed so perfectly. It is a work of art for sure. I don't know if you are ready, but if you want to react to an original.of theirs, I have to recommend Run to You.

    If you're looking for Beer, try Home Free - another acappella group that won the Sing Off but they're "Country Acappella" - they have a ton of covers and some originals. Champaign Taste on a Beer Budget is a fun original and Ring of Fire is a beautiful cover - and both include a cameo by Avi. They have their own followers "Home Fries" and just love to have fun.

    I’ve been a fan of Pentatonix since right after they won the Sing Off. They had many great performances in that show. My absolute favorite was Dog Days Are Over. If you go back pick that song, that will definitely stay with you. You have over 8 years of music to discover and I envy your journey. I have loved mine.

    To get a good idea of their progression, watch their SingOff performances on youtube. There's one that's almost an hour long but it's a compilation of all their performances. Those performances show how they think things through when doing the arranging. Now they are pros at what they do; but back then, they were learning their limits. It's an hour well spent!!! ☺️ 😁 😃

    I love the fact you are new to doing reaction videos as I am new to watching them. You are doing a great job. We shall journey together. PTX is great and I happened upon a solo music video of their beatboxer, Kevin singing. It's not a capella. I loved it and hope you get a chance to watch it. It's KO - True Colors.

    I think you'll really like "Mary Did You Know"..the setting is unique and you'll get to hear Kevin sing!
    I know you mentioned that you're not religious, per say, but most of the holiday songs they sing don't feel overly "preaching"..in fact, the only holiday season music CD I've ever purchased is theirs.

    I just love how you react to Pentatonix! You must have some type of music background or experience because of your comments you make during the videos. I love that! You really enjoy and break everything down. I am not familiar with this song, but I love it! Mitch’s voice was so perfect in this with the way he sang it. I’ve followed this group since they first appeared on the Sing Off. Another group I wish you would react to is Home Free (as others I’ve seen below). They were on the Sing Off the season after PTX. They are Country music based, but have a different style and put their stamp on every cover. They have converted many people over to appreciating Country Music. I would love to see you react to the cover of “How Great Thou Art’, or Crosby, Stills, & Nash’s cover of “Helplessly Hoping” (one I was unfamiliar with). They not only do covers, they released an album of 10 original songs, with 2 covers last year. They really are the Country version of PTX!

    Nice reaction! I can appreciate the dilemma you find yourself in between savoring this journey slowly and with breaks as opposed to gulping it down as fast as possible. Take your time. Besides there are so many other things to listen to as well. Check out home free and Voiceplay for other acapella greats and the PTX crew have side projects that are great as well. Superfruit doing defying gravity and Kevin’s solo version of down are really good options.

    I subscribe to your channel for your Pentatonix reactions I am a total Pentaholic. However you said you were looking to do a different genre so I have a recommendation of my favorite band. They are a hard rock band from Mexico consisting of three sisters. Dany-20-lead guitar; Pau-18-drummer and Ale-15-bass. Don’t let their ages fool you- they are the future of rock n roll. Their fans are called The Warning Army and they’re passionate about the pure talent of these ladies and are ready for them to hit the big time. They write and compose all their songs- in English. They’ve released two original albums- the most recent is a concept album called The Queen of the Murder Scene. Anyways, I can write forever about them. They’ve opened for Def Leppard, The Killers, Stryper and Moderatto. They’ve played at Whisky a Go-go and has scheduled their first North American tour last month but it was cancelled bc of covid. It’s rescheduled for October.
    Here’s the link to the show, sorry I couldn’t figure out how to cut it to the specific songs. ua-cam.com/video/o9TUxn-WTt8/v-deo.html. This is the best professional recording of a set they did on this Mexican show called Desalvado- the shows in Spanish but their songs are all English. Depending on your preference- if looking for a rock/hard rock song watch Sinister Smiles at the 21:20 time stamp; if you want pure hard rock I recommend Dull Knives at 26:00, and if you want a more punkish rock you can watch P.S.Y.C.H.O.T.I.C at 46:50. They are totally in rock mode performing but are actually very humble, respectful and fun- loving young ladies who love their fans.

    If you want to stick with acapella but you want a different feel from a different group then listen to home Free. They are a country acapella group with amazing vocals and I think you really would enjoy them. Two songs that I would recommend is in the blood or helplessly hoping they're both songs that they did and which makes you go into a space of calm. At least that's what it is for me.I enjoy your reactions and I love your energy you are so calm always and I love it. Keep doing what you doing at your own pace and have fun with it 😁🔥❣️
