  • During the #SuccessionWars there is few machines more intimidating. #Battletech and #Mechwarrior have a weapon of war that truly is... #Awesome.
The Awesome is the subject of our video today. Powerful, brutal, and the embodiment of much of what an assault mech should be, this monster lumbers onto the field and shatters any that come before it.
Let's talk about why this mech is so overwhelming.

The awesome is an example of what happens when you trim out complexity, focus on a simple, effective, well-rounded weapon and build your stuff to last. Lots of mechs field missiles, cannons, machine guns, lasers and all sorts of various weaponry simultaneously, requiring weapon grouping, switching, range bracketing and explosive ammo; the awesome just shoots lightning all day long. Some mechs are good at dodging cannons or shooting down missiles; EVERY mech melts when hit with repeated blasts of man-made lightning...and the awesome NEVER RUNS OUT OF LIGHTNING.
The Awesome is a rook; it doesn't make complicated maneuvers or tricky plays; it doesn't blitzkrieg you out of nowhere at blazing speed. It hits the field, starts walking and bulldozes you. If facing an awesome (or god help you, a squad of them) You either bring overwhelming firepower, overwhelming speed (and a LOT of luck) or you get the hell out of it's way. It's a siege machine that never stops frying things until it goes critical, meaning it ALWAYS gets your money's worth no matter what falls off first.
Is it any wonder the awesome is so beloved by so many?

Honestly? The Awesome lives up to its name. The design philosophy behind it defines Assault mechs: A reliable firing platform for heavy weapons. The Awesome balances heat vs firepower and focuses on using long range weapons so it gets the most opportunity to take advantage of all those heatsinks. This mech isn't all about one good alpha strike, it is sustained fire and repeatedly hammering opponents into submission. PPCs do have a "dead zone" at point blank range, but that dead zone isn't as safe as some pilots might think. Any pilot entrusted with an assault mech isn't going to be a rookie. Elite pilots can hit targets in the outer edge of the dead zone, or they can close to melee. Any mech that survives to get in melee range of an Awesome should be soft enough for the 80 ton punches to breach their armor. Even a fresh mech should respect an 80 ton punch.

    • @erikbjelke4411

And the Awesome has Battlefists, making getting within punching distance an even worse idea.

The AWS-8Q is my favorite mech of all time, in our table top campaign we're allowed one customized mech for the commander, and mine is an Awesome with a 300xl engine, and 3 ER PPC's with double heatsinks, it's called Perun.

  • @FARBerserker

    This Mech is like Pizza.
Even when bad, still pretty awesome . .
    Too much heat for you?
Replace 1 to 3 of the PPCs with Large Lasers.
You lose minimal Firepower and Reach, but the Mech also runs so much cooler.
It also has no more minimum reach anymore. And it frees up several tons for
either more armor, more heatsinks or other goodies. Like a 4th Large Laser for example.

    • @WolfHreda

The less weapons you have, the more each single one rise your firepower in % ...1 single PPC firepower in % has diffirent value depending on how many there are already. The Awesome became one of the four mechs my unit regularly fielded alongside an Atlas (my command mech) a Commando (best light mech ever) and a Catapult (Later an Archer) after the Draconis Combine STOLE our Star League ers Highlanders. The guy in the Awesome left for a different unit when the guy in the Archer died but came back when we found the highlander that belonged to the guy that died and helped us retrieve it, he also died in that mission and his Awesome was lost as he stayed behind to cover our escape, it was also the most noble thing that character ever did as most of his actions were out of greed and impatience up to that point but sticking it to the Combine trash and getting back his dead friends highlander was more important to him than his life or money as this job had 0 pay, it was done purely out of a sense of loyalty, indignation, and a need to set things right.
Of course that set up later became the inspiration for how many of our custom mechs got built. More reliance on energy weapons that have long ranges and deal devastating damage, lots of armor making it hard to cut through them, plenty of short range power, and plenty of heat Sinks.
While many designs take inspiration from or are built using clan mechs into something completely new they still incorporate these ideals. My Arctodus may be designed with the Kodiak as it's base but it's weapon layout is inspired by the Atlas and outside of its two LRM 10s it's reliance on Energy weapons and having enough heat Sinks to fire them continuously comes from the Awesome. Same with my command mech, it may resemble a Nova Cat but it's heavy armor and payload of energy weapons and heart Sinks is owed to the Awesome. My Artillery quad mech that also uses linked targeting computers may take inspiration from the Catapult for it's Arrow IV/Long Tom/Thumper(whichever variant you choose) but the rest of its weapons were all energy and the ability to fire them continuously came from you guessed it, the Awesome.
If it wasn't impressive enough to rightfully claim that name to begin with that it is the inspiration for so many other mechs, Clan, Inner Sphere, and other should help one to realize just how Awesome it really is.

  • @ChaosTicket

The Awesome is one of my favorite mechs. Unlike many it actually works well even in 3025 because its so solid. Its flaws are "its not 100 tons", and thats about it. More tonnage for Armor, Heat Sinks, and Weapons would help it, but its not bad by itself.
The Awesome 8R and 8T models bring a variant concept, the missile support Awesome. Still fairly solid.
What I want in an Assault Class battlemech is something that can beat a heavy mech in a direct confrontation. This means more armor, weapons, heat sinks, ammunition, but less speed.

also take note that Rookie Pilots do not get assigned an Assault Mech.
meaning that whoever is driving that Awesome will have at least a 3 or better gunnery skill. more often a Veteran with a 2 or possibly even 1 and potentially a PPC Specialist.
at this point, minimum range is a minor annoyance readily overcome by experienced handling.
IE. light mechs don't live long in close to an Awesome nor do mediums. anything else has to weather the storm and live long enough to return the favor.
Dash & Blast tactics against an experienced Awesome is suicide!

The Awesome. Another favorite Mech. One that I have used extensively in 3025 era games. Some may claim that the Atlas is a superior Mech. I, disagree.
Post Succession Wars, the Awesome has several worthwhile upgrades. Any Merc Commander can appreciate an Awesome's 'awesomeness'. Especially due to the fact that it is relatively 'cheap' to purchase and field, since it carries NO ammunition based weaponry at all.
Although, I will point out that PPCs are NOT common, nor cheap, if you are playing any sort of 'campaign' type gaming. So, a Mercenary Commander will stockpile replacement PPCs whenever they are available and not marked up too high in pricing.
Having more than 2 Awesomes in your forces means that any PPCs that turn up as battlefield salvage become 'primary' picks for the Merc unit. Even, sometimes, above salvaging another Mech, if your supply of PPCs is exhausted, or very scarce.
A very canny Mercenary Commander will purchase old Awesome Mechs for parts. Especially so, if any of the PPCs are still attached to the 'salvage Mech' thus purchased. And ripping PPCs off of Panthers is an old Merc's trick.

Awesome is one of the examples of "lower border weight" bracket mechs that actually does not suck.
Oftentimes, lower weight brackets tend to have too big of an engine for their own good and tend to sacrifice too much for too little gain - like say... a Dragon for example.
Awesome is a mech that knows what it wants to do - dedicated, sustained direct fire support mech. Decently armoured, reasonably mobile, well armed.
It is like Marauder, or Warhammer, but eliminates the heat problems.
It is not a subtle machine by any means, but it does exactly what advertised and does it well.
My third most beloved Assault mech, second being the Highlander, first being the Stalker.

I'm not a big fan of the AWS-9M personally. I don't like Inner Sphere ER weapons, I think they generate too much heat sadly.
My least favourite AWS is that design, but the STK-5S also has some problems, like an XL engine, but I think its weapon package is still more managable. It does however, have more ammo, which isn't a good thing.
Hard to know. If its the AWS-9Q, my money would be the AWS easily. 9M? That's going to be a slugfest. Hard to know who'd win.

Not my favorite mech, but the Awesome IS.
This thing is a monster. You can fire it's three guns in ANY combination, can one or two-shot light mechs, its armor makes it virtually a fortress, and it rarely overheats except in the worst firefights or if the pilot forgets he can overheat. It's basically a walking gun. I once called it 'THE big fat panda' and 'the Tyrannosaurus Mech'.

It's the truck that is going to run you over, so you move away from the truck...and keep moving...keep moving... I suppose some people are going to tinker with it, but why bother? It's an AWESOME mech, man!! I like how the oddly drawn left hand has over the years morphed into a mace that is a built-in brawling weapon against enemies that crowd it.

The Awesome is pretty cool, for its simplicity, straightforwardness, and its PPCS!
Always a fan of the big freaking weapon systems (Gauss Rifle, PPC, AC 20) and that extends to a fondness for mechs that are built around them. Hollander, Kit Fox, Fafnir, Panther, etc.
    Even the freaking Urbanmech!
If I ever grumble about it, its only because everyone and their mum loves the thing. Yes, yes, its lovely, we know :D

  • @HarperStl
    @HarperStl Рік тому

I like the Awesome in a defensive role better than using it for breakthrough. Properly supported and in an entrenched position like a hilltop, never running out of ammo and having more armor than anything lighter than itself makes it a very difficult defensive position to assault. This also negates the weakness of slow speed, though it pairs very well with a Stalker in an assault/command lance for that reason.

  • @robertbensch7748
    @robertbensch7748 2 місяці тому

The targeting distortions from ppcs are also not to be dismissed. If you don´t alpha but do a weapons rotations you can hammer an opponent with a ppc blast every second, the mech will barely be able to find a target to shoot back at before something explodes in it.

Between the Awesome and the Marauder, I can't ever decide what to pilot, in any medium. Tabletop? MW5? MWO? Battletech by Paradox? I always take at least one. Or both. You can't argue with an Awesome, ESPECIALLY if that Awesome is helping to corner you with a Marauder closing in from the side or rear. That, and the Awesome is the only mech I've seen in tabletop and MW5 that has a prayer of either bothering or gunning an Atlas out of the way, or til critical overload.

personally my go to choice for offensive firepower.
the AWS-9Q knows no equal anywhere. Clan ER PPC's are deadly, but have a deadly downside in unmanageable heat loading with more than 2 aboard despite being lighter and smaller. something many Clan Pilots fail to take seriously.
the AWS 9Q delivers the phrase. Effective Firepower!
4x PPC's and the Heat Sinks to USE them!
nothing more, and no frills or fancy to do it.
it's slow, but who cares about slow when you can melt the center torso off most mechs in 1 round.
only another Assault could theoretically withstand it's assault, but it won't withstand it twice!
those who try the use terrain to close in tactic soon learn that the PPC's minimum Range isn't that big a problem for an Awesome Pilot who knows their machine well. since I tend to put good pilots in Awesomes. they don't miss much and leave a trail of death in their wake.
my only changes, replace the standard Engine with a Clan Tech XL one. replace Heat Sinks with Clan Tech Doubles. I only need 21 of them to run heat neutral.
    drop the ECM Suite
a Lance of these supported by a lance of my KGC-100K King Crabs toting twin Gauss Rifles and a lance of Phoenix Hawks to guard the flanks and pick off cripples means I am likely to utterly rip a hole through the enemy line that lighter and faster mechs can exploit and run amok in the rearguard areas.
    adored by many.
Respected by All! even the Clans give pause when an Awesome arrives.
their take on the AWS 9Q while terrifyingly deadly cannot cope with it's heat loading. even downgrading to ER Large Lasers only partially compensates

  • @robertmarquez343

I like it slow but it packs a punch probably be good to use lrm to harass enemies and lure them in and then smashing I wouldn't use it on Open ground probably dominates in City environments as well as mountains that is as long as you don't push up too fast with lighter units LOL

The Awesome is a great example of the differences between tabletop, lore and video game implementations of the same chassis. I love an Awesome in tabletop or the turn based Battletech video game but they are absolutely terrible in MWO as their ludicrously large side torso are easy meat for pinpoint damage heavy mechs. Even in a PUG game you're not likely to get more than a handful of PPC salvos before somebody or a collection of somebodies reduce you to a big walking stick devoid of side torsos and all of your armament. Too bad too because I just LOVE they way they look.

I always wondered why there never was a variant for the SLDF let alone Royal Command. Call it a 8Qb, use FF and 16 DHS allows upgrading to a 320 SFE, more or less rectifying the only negative of the 8Q, and being a VERY cheap upgrade (even more so than the 9Q) and getting the same speed as the 9M but without the fragile XL. The Awesome is awesome for one reason. Because it's a fucking awesome. If you get hit with just two of the three PPCs, you better be a crack pilot because if not, you're out of the fight struggling to get back to your feet. And fancy that you got to your feet; good for you because there's another volley coming. Oh and if you want to bar fight an awesome, that small laser is just the welcome wagon to a pounding you will never forget.
That said, Awesome is godlike in the open or on high ground. If there is ample cover, it is an 80 ton paper weight.
