  • The ENF series, or the #Enforcer, is a great design that has served the #FederatedSuns very well, and is one of the great prizes of the #SuccessionWars that the #AFFS has in its cap.
    Well armoured, and well armed, this machine has seen battle across every battlefield in the #InnerSphere. Often overlooked, but never ignored, let's go over the Enforcer.

    The 3050 upgrade of the Enforcer highlights one of the most baffling decisions in the redesign of existing mechs: a predominate lack of double heat sinks. The if the upgrade package (which included an XL engine) included double heat sinks, it could afford to fire the ER large laser, the LBX-10 AC and jump its full distance without gaining heat. It could also remove 2 heat sinks (bringing it down to 10 double heat sinks), and use the extra tonnage on armor or more AC ammo. It could even include a medium pulse laser to help overcome opponent that close to short range.
    Many of the upgrade packages introduce new weapons but don't include double heat sinks. Double heat sinks take a lot of critical slots, and some redesigns can't afford to use them due to space considerations. For any mech that has 20 or less normal heat sinks, ripping out the extra heat sinks and turning the engine's 10 into double is a no-brainer upgrade. The break even point between single and double heat sinks as far as critical space is concerned is 37. If the total heat dissipation is 36 or less you take less weight, and less crit slots switching to inner sphere double heat sinks. At 38 heat dissipation, it takes more crit slots using IS double heat sinks than normal heat sinks.

      The whole point of many 3050 variants is that they were just starting to learn how to incorporate these newly rediscovered technologies into their designs, and that there was a lot of New Toy Syndrome going around on top of production only spinning up slowly. No DHS and hot-running new energy weapons is one of the mistakes almost everyone made. Ask Kurita about their Panther with SHS and an ER PPC. 🤣

    • @ericwollaston5654
      @ericwollaston5654 Рік тому +2

      And the key thing regarding the double heat sinks and the new age Enforcer was that it upgraded the engine to the 250 class. At that point, all the base heatsinks are integrated INSIDE the engine with no critical space.

      What I like to do is downgrade the AC/10 to an AC/5, replace the laser with a PPC, and up the armour and ammo reserves, maybe an extra heat sink or two. It's an excellent fire support 'mech! Just gotta be careful of flankers, or use the extra tonnage for extra Medium Lasers.

A lot of people criticize mechs for not being optimized for large scale mech conflicts, forgetting that mechs are supposed to be expensive and rare, meaning that mechs built to be generalists are very lore appropriate. None are as unapologetic about this in their lore as the Marshal, which was designed for isolated mechwarriors on periphery colonies that had to be sheriffs dealing with insurgencies and smuggling, forest rangers dealing with fires and wilderness, and pirate deterrents without help nearby. I look at it, like a lighter, jump capable warhammer....doing only 2 points less damage, but running cool enough to send that gunfire every turn.

    The Enforcer is one of those mechs (the Centurion is another) that can be upgraded so easily it's not even funny. For a relatively cheap and easy upgrade, you only need two things: Ferro-Fibrous armor, and an LB10-X autocannon. The LB gives you one free ton to add some cluster ammo, and the FF frees up enough weight to add CASE. XLs are a waste of materiel when it comes to troopers like the ENF and CN9. If you want to spend a bit more, get the double heatsinks, but they're not strictly necessary.

    A good medium mech, and a good companion to other stand-off mid-range mediums, like the Centurion. Although the rear ST is criminally under armored (3 points!), which gives me a lot of anxiety. A single medium laser will open it up to crits and a potential ammo explosion. I would feel safer if it had 5 points in the rear torso sections, to soak a medium laser hit. The low ammo also means you can’t just indiscriminately blast away with it as soon as you get into range, like you can with a Cent. Because you can’t afford to waste shots. So there’s this tension between keeping to medium range, to avoid letting enemies get shots at your rear, but also being unable to afford wasted shots, from the range modifiers. It makes it harder to play than a Centurion, but similar in capability I think.

    Here's a thought: instead of the 250XL engine, upgrade the 200 to a 250 standard instead. Although the 250 standard engine is 4 tons heavier than the 200 standard, if you use endo-steel structure that saves 2.5 tons, and then strip out 2 heat sinks but replace them remainder with _double efficiency_ sinks, then you've solved your engine vulnerability problem _and_ your heat problem at the same time.

    My favorite mech. Anything that doesn't need to be something else is going to be an Enforcer. It's tough, punchy, mobile, and a steal at the low, low price of 3.5M C-Bills
    I usually play my mechs stock, but the enforcer is easily improved with a few small changes. I generally remove 1 heat sink to dd a ton of ammo, whenever time allows in a campaign.
    The 3025 Enforcer is also pretty easy to improve with a field upgrade as LosTech becomes available, without anything that requires a redesign of the whole mech. The AC can be swapped for an LB-X model, saving 1 ton, the Small Laser can be removed for a half ton, and the heatsinks can be converted to 10 double heatsinks instead of 12 standard, saving 2 tons. That allows for extra ammo, CASE, and either an ER Large Laser with some extra armor, or a Large Pulse Laser. All of those are relatively cheap and easy modifications that could be done by a mercenary company. The base design is solid enough that mostly you just swap in better parts as they become available.
    I frequently field the Enforcer with the Hatchetman (generally 2 ENF to 1 HCT), which is one of the cheapest medium mechs (I think 2nd after the Whitworth), and has similar ranges. In a campaign I'll try to get them both running the same ACs so they can take the same ammo.

    The 3050 "upgrade" is bad, but not one of the worst in that book. I'd wouldn't change the engine, upgrade the autocannon to LBX, large laser to ER, and the small to a medium then put on DHS, and you can max (less a point) the armour. Tough, Long Lasting and Hard Hitting in any era. This is what the Enforcer wants to be.

Most of the time when I record it on OBS it comes out mega-choppy and will have graphic freezes for several seconds. Like 1 frame every ten seconds. I have no problems with any other games.

    Superb urban warfare.... well it's decent in that role, but urban warfare screems ambusher like the Hunchback or king crab to me. Rather than a specialised design its more of a generalised design. In a way it excells at that part. Long range it's not the best against dedicated missile boats and has a bit shorter range than any design relying on ppc. L-Laser has decent range, so does AC/10 and it has the speed to get to engagement range to answer in time. Short range the damage pales against dedicated designes with an ac/20 but an ac 10 still hurts. Mechs with lots of medium laser and/or srm will do more damage yet a large laser and ac/10 are still respectable. So won't suprass a brawler or long range fighter in their dedicated roles but works between the two. It's a decent mech even if I often forget it even exists. Perhaps because it's something like the generic soldier of a mech. Can do everything but nothing its really awesome at.

    No, no. Much like the Urbanmech, the Enforcer's Large Laser and AC/10 are backup weapons for its mighty small laser. Once the small laser has come in range, your opponent knows he's doomed.
    In all seriousness, however, the Enforcer is a solid mech in Davion's stable of medium troopers. Combined with their AC/10 or PPC equipped Rifleman, a Blackjack and a Centurion, an Enforcer led lance can be a nasty mid range opponent to face.
    The ENF-5D is another sad victim of crappy FASA engineering, much like the 3050 Quickdraw and Goliath. Rip out two heat sinks and switch it them doubles, add two medium lasers, and the 5D becomes capable of fighting most opponents of its weight class or lighter. Unfortunately, Davion decided instead to produce the Enforcer III which used a variety of medium to large ballistic weapns along with a targeting computer and bettet heat dissipation. It's an excellent design, but the expense lead to the production of the 5R for easy slotting into an anti-Kurita lance. Personally I always like the successor Achenar lated created based off the original plans, the Enfield

    Hello big red 40k. Good video. I have played the Enforcer in a a medium-heavy lance with House Steiner affiliation. I use a. Variant of an LB10X auto cannon in right arm and 2 medium pulse lasers in left arm. This package works well. The Enforcer is the father of other designs: Sentry, Watchman and Enforcer 3. It is all worth noting that the Enfield, a cousin, can share ammo for the autocannons if necessary. Kind of like the Rifleman and Jäegermech. Will you consider highlighting House Liao design Cataphract in a future video?

  • @rotwang2000
    @rotwang2000 2 роки тому +3

    The 3025 version is a very good all-round package, it's not super-mobile, but the jump jets help to offset that issue, it can take a beating and carries some useful firepower.
    On the downside it has to mind faster mechs and those with LRM's or PPC's. Against Clans it's going to suffer because its armament falls in their ER M Laser range, which means that a lot of Clan mechs usually have more firepower in backup weapons than the baseline Enforcer.
    The 3050 version makes the big critical mistake of fancy weapon upgrades and heat be damned, making all the improvements a moot point since the mech now has to fight with one arm tied behind its back.
    The Enforcer III is mostly an exercise in trying as many variants of the cannon+energy weapon combo as possible.
    Overall the Enforcer is not a "mech killer" like the Marauder or Mad Cat. It's a team mech, that can hold the line if needed and depends on other mechs for things like support, mobility and firepower. It's a decent medium replacement for a heavy mech.
    To me the main appeal are the jump jets which allows it to move over difficult terrain and can keep going forward when even 5/8 mediums get bogged down. The good armour and firepower allow it to go front and center into a fight and it can back off when needed. In games with larger, heavier mechs it's a good wingman that can move into the flank and rear once an enemy mech is locked into combat and can finish off damaged mechs.

    I think as far as "trooper" mechs go, the Enforcer is overshadowed by the Centurion. Rather than go with a spread of weapons across all range brackets, the Enforcer is strictly a mid-range brawler. It can use the jump jets to good use, but if an enemy gets too close it runs the risk of getting behind and getting a hit in on the weak back armor. The limited ammunition for the main gun means the pilot has to be more conservative with the rate of fire, lest the bins run dry in the middle of combat.
    I do like the Enforcer. It's solid and affordable (being comparable in C-bill cost to the Centurion), but it has some flaws that can be exploited if the pilot gets careless.
