Well, it finally happened. The New Mutants is in theaters - and it actually exists! I break it all down in my review! JOIN ME ON PATREON: / danmurrell FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER: / murrelldan
New Mutants is kind of like watching your kid in a play. You know it’s not going to be that good but you’re happy they got to be here so you cheer at the end anyway.
that's true. I saw the movie and was pleasantly surprised the movie isn't bad. Maybe all this waiting influenced my judgment but I really like this movie.
Cindy_B - I really enjoyed it too...it might be bc I read the comic series as a teenager and had a connection to the characters, their backstories, etc.
On paper, It's a sound idea putting all these young mutants in a sort of asylum/retreat and doing something psychological with them and inserting Dany's mystical Bear thing possessing them of sort where they see visions(that is her power). In the end though it felt like a TV episode and the bear thing was sort of a rip off to Phoenix.
Fair review. The movie would have worked better without the two males if it was going to be so short. They felt the least developed. Introducing a 5 character ensemble, a mysterious organization, mysterious events, and super powers is just too much for the runtime. The resolution isn't particularly satisfying either, which makes you feel flat leaving the theater. I wish this would have been a Magik movie instead. Anya crushed it despite the cheesy accent.
It captured the comics vibe perfectly...which is not a good objetive lol. New Mutants comics are very inconsistent in quality, even during the same storyline...they have that campy stories, dumb romances and jokes, some more scary stories, and very little action. Still, I don't agree with reviewers giving this so much crap...it's an average quality movie.
Omg, I’m sorry but I almost wish Dan’s screening was cancelled by the storm that would have been a hilarious way for this to end, only for Dan to have to wait another couple weeks before he saw it
The Comics I gotta believe we're already there. Hard to believe he'd have traveled all the way to Arkansas with those in the car just for this. But then that begs the question, why'd you move out and leave those behind??
The biggest box office battles ever. 1. Endgame vs. Avatar. 2. Batman v Superman vs. critics. 3. The New Mutants vs. release date. 4. Tenet vs. COVID-19.
It also had multiple release dates. The initial release date was November 2019, but it got moved to February 2020 and replaced by Ford v Ferrari for awards season following the Disney-Fox acquisition. Then, the pre-pandemic move from February 2020 to September 2020 by Disney-Fox was unexplained. Now, here we are with the new February 2021 date.
The actors and characterization was on point. It wasn't bad by any means, it just felt like not enough. The film needed more plot and probably another hour
Just finished it, and for me it started breaking down an hour in. It had so much potential to be a great film, but it couldn't deliver with that ending. Very strange how it just flopped like that. And they had 3 years to make changes where necessary smh
This movie was not worth the wait, but it's not a dumpster fire either. As Dan said, while some bits were good, there's not a lot of meat on this bone. The whole endeavor is very down the middle. It played more like a TV pilot than a franchise film. And so it fades into obscurity...
Well unfortunately California theaters are still closed so sadly no I'll just watched the breakfast club and nightmare on elm street 1-5 until it finally opens.
I really enjoyed New Mutants. I thought it was a unique take on the superhero origin story. I'm not a big X-Men fan so I didn't get all the references, which might be for the better. I think it works well as a standalone horror film. I think that it's a better version of "Glass," which was a movie that I liked. Maybe it was just the thrill of being back in a theater, but I really enjoyed this movie.
Spoilers below, but if you are an X-Men fan then the TL;DR is you should totally watch it. I definitely enjoyed the movie, though as mentioned it really probably doesn't land as well if you are not as familiar with the comics. The first two acts I thought were great, building tension, and slowly revealing the powers of Dani (which is Mirage if you are familiar with the comics) as she grows stronger and stronger. The third act was definitely more messy, good sequences with the various characters vs the bear, though I do wish they had stayed more true to the comics with her interactions with the bear. The movie was at it strongest when it was dealing with the difficult topics of survivor's guilt, responsibility, and teenage hi-jinks. It could have been stronger on the arcs for Dr. Reyes, Sam, Illyana, and Roberto. In particular I wanted more of a build up for Illyana (Magik in the comics) and some more sweet Magik/Lockheed action. Overall, definitely worth the watch. It's messy, but enjoyable and with plenty of easter eggs and lore for comic fans. It's a little sad knowing that this is probably the last we will see of these characters since that whole side is shut down, but if you watch it as a standalone movie it's great and leaves behind some characters that are just begging for a sequel. Now can we please get a Lockheed and Lockjaw spin-off series?
I think it won't last long in the theaters, and will be on Disney+ or Hulu in about 4 weeks ... well, I am hoping. I am not going to a theater anytime soon.
Of course, if you had a dumpster fire that fans were waiting for, release it during the pandemic, and blame the terrible box office numbers on the plague.
Dan, I'm glad you took precautions going to the theater. I'm also glad you were able to give us a heads up to the caliber of the movie in your opinion. I've been skeptical of this one for a while even though I love the X-Men.
I still want to see it: apart from liking superpower films, I'll see anything with Anya Yaylor-Joy and Maisie Williams, *particularly* if they're in the same film....
The fact that the apparent main villain was said to not be in the movie in the original cut says a lot about decisions that were made later on the process. Similarly, rumors of 2 different actors playing what would have seemed to be a significant villain being cut out is not a great sign either. I'm sure I'll catch this on streaming, but not going to make me head to a theater.
While I was curious about New Mutants (and really interested in Tenet), at the moment I will need more than an N95 mask to feel comfortable in a theater environment. However when New Mutants streams, I will see it (assuming it goes to a service that I already subscribe to).
Saw it, liked it! It was good, not great, and I wish there was more! Too bad there will be no sequels to this, as those would explore those connections you spoke of. This should have been released with Logan, before Deadpool 2 or just after, but definitely before Dark Phoenix!
I finally watched the Fox X-Men swan song and it was 'meh'. The story was non existent and there is little to no action. The movie's saving grace is the performances and chemistry between the actors. That said, it is perplexing that they make Illyana the spitting image of her comic book self, but can't be bothered to get Sam and Roberto ( or Reyes) right.
I think I enjoyed it a bit more than you did. I got what her Danny's power is quickly which made it a little easier. I found it off balance as well. I also found the lighting too dark. I found it hard to follow along at some points. I did enjoy it more than Dark Phoenix. New Mutants at least had a straight story line.
Definitely more enjoyable than Dark Phoenix, and I thought the first two acts were pretty interesting. I think a big difference though is most people would be lost on the references if you are not familiar with New Mutants and Uncanny X-Men comic series. But as an X-Men fan, I really enjoyed it. There are definitely valid criticisms but overall the movie was a good introduction, and now I want more Magik/Lockheed/Mirage
I'm almost disappointed it's out. I liked having a White Whale. :) Although I am happy for the creators and actors to have it finally out there, regardless.
I am always saying, *Raid of Area 51* opened up alternate timelines and merged it with ours. Just look another proof- *Snyder Cut* 🤣 (edit: also what everything is happening after Dec 2019...)

New Mutants could have been better but it definitely wasn’t as terrible as people thought it was going to be. I think in the long run, this movie will be thought of as a nice epilogue to the Fox Xmen era
I’ll check it out when it’s on cable tv. Love the shirt man! I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve watched a movie review from a closet haha awesome stuff as always
I like this movie very much. For me it is cohesive and It's nice to see a smaller story with mutants. Cast is good, it is looking good, music is also good. It's no masterpice but really entertaining movie with few suprises.
Awww, the death of a legend, the New Mutants are actually out.i planned to see it, than i saw that Tenet was going out this weekend, so Tenet win. i'm going to see it tomorrow. Yes, outside of the US, where the pandemic is almost over (i live in Quebec, we have less than 100 new case per day) theatres are open for a while now, and apparently they decided to release Tenet, but not in the USA. I actually went to theatre last week to see spongebob with my kids.
Caleb Begly Fun & Tech yeah ok, I liked it. While a second watching might help to understand more details, I don’t think that this movie is that complicated to understand like a lot of people say it is. However the score is really good and I’ve seen it in IMAX, and it definitely worth watching it on that type of screen.
my screening was delayed because the projector in the auditorium broke so the theater had to contact disney for permission to change the auditorium. this movie is cursed.
Sounds like it failed where Spider-Man: Homecoming succeeded, because Spider-Man: Homecoming meshed that Breakfast Club-style teen drama vibe very well with the superhero genre.
This is the worst possible thing this movie could be. After being delayed for 3 years, it being abysmal would at least give us something to talk about. This just adds nothing to the conversation.
Down the middle was the worst scenario for this movie :( I was hoping it would at least be a glorious train wreck if it wasn't good. At least something to make it worth the wait.
Hi Dan, thanks so much for the review. Can't believe it actually came out, though, as you know, we don't have any theaters open in California! I hope that your mom is doing better and that you are all safe and healthy.
I think that AMC has done a fantastic job with the safety protocols they've introduced. Here in VA every employee and customer was wearing a mask for both movies I saw; Empire Strikes Back, Goonies.
I'm going to see it on Sunday! I'm a big X-men fan, but I feel like the Fox universe should have just gone out on top with Days of Future Past. (Not a big fan of Logan either, but I understand its appeal.) I'm not expecting a lot from the film, but so long as it is better than Dark Phoenix (which shouldn't be hard) I'll be happy. I don't mind references to the old universe, but I know it's going to feel like "Oh, what could have been!" similar to the Mr. Sinister references in the later X-men films that never became anything.
I'm sorry, but it's really funny that we literally waited 2 and a 1/2 years for The New Mutants only for it to be universally panned. Also, rest in peace to Chadwick Boseman. I just found out that he passed away and I'm so sad. The MCU and Hollywood in general will never be the same without him.
I bet a friend in October of 2018 that this movie would never be in theaters, that it's destiny would be on some streaming service. Sadly I paid my friend 40 bucks a couple days ago because OF COURSE HE REMEMBERED
If you are in the S.F. Bay area and want to see it, it's playing the West Wind drive-in cinema in south San Jose (408) 226-2251 or (408) 226-2289. Watching from inside your car equals built in social distancing. One more thing, no online ticket sales, box office only.
Anya plays Colossus's sister. I liked that Cannonball had the southern accent. I liked Wolfsbane and Moonstar. Wolfsbane is from the X-Factor group that was lead by Havok in the comics. Roberto or Sunspot was a good character and I liked Dr Reyes. You spoiled the relationships that happen in the movie but I don't mind it.
I personally got more enjoyment from Dark Phoenix and Apocalypse than I did with New Mutants. At least those films had previously established characters that I cared about. Also, Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance is one of the most irritating I’ve seen in a superhero movie since Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3. Her character is just a straight up racist
This dudes a murderer. Big ass walk in closet. Hardly any clothes in it. Half of those clothes look like dresses. “Oh wow nice comic book collection!” “Thanks, wanna see my skin chairs?” “What?” “What?”
Is it sad I was hoping for Disney to delay it once again so you could keep the countdown(?) going? I think that would have made you happier than the actual movie
Something interesting you might not have picked up on. This is not Sunspot's debut in the X-Universe. He fought alongside the X-Men and Magneto against the Sentinels in DOFP. The time travel probably had an effect on his history.
The Demon Bear storyline is so, so good. How did the screw it up this bad? I just hope they bring Anna Taylor Joy back because she rocks. Actually most of the cast is pretty darn good. I guess its just bad production, bad writing, and a bad director. Is it even possible to make a really good marvel comic book movie without Kevin Feige?
Dan, is that what you told your family? "Hello everyone, I came back to see you, but just let me step out for 2 hours first to run an errand..." hahaha... No more countdown to New Mutants. Let's countdown to New Mutants reboot (or Disney redux)?
My small-town one-screen theater just reopened this week (though they had been doing private showings for a while), and I guess it's "select" by Dan's reasoning, since they're playing Bill and Ted this weekend! They even showed the first and second movies on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. I wish I could have gone, but alas. I might go see the new one, on a Tuesday or Wednesday when hardly anyone else will be there.
Well... I'm still excited to see it. Hopefully after a couple of weeks they'll offer the option to watch from home. I would guess they're testing the market by putting it in theaters first. It probably won't make a whole lot so then they'll have no choice but to fall back on streaming.
Not willing to get covid for any movie right now, much less a sub par X-men film. Should’ve just dropped on Hulu or Disney+ for free. No one wants that Mulan nonsense
Ha!! I live in Houston. We were disappointed the tropical storm that was supposedly surrounding Laura Didn't hit us as was predicted. Our lawns needed the rain. I'm not afraid to go to the theater, I'm looking forward to it. But I'm not sure I'm going to spend money to see This movie.
New Mutants is kind of like watching your kid in a play. You know it’s not going to be that good but you’re happy they got to be here so you cheer at the end anyway.

I really want to see, even if its not good. The wait has become too much.
It's not a good movie... Boring like captain marvel

Fair review. The movie would have worked better without the two males if it was going to be so short. They felt the least developed. Wow! A clean shaved Dan is reviewing New Mutants! Is this a dream? I thought that would never happen. :D
Did you bring the comics to make a quickly put together backdrop or where they at the place you're staying?
He recorded this video at his mom's.
So, most probably the comics were left there in his bedroom from when he used to live there.
It captured the comics vibe perfectly...which is not a good objetive lol.

John: Back in the AMC days they put us in a closet somewhere
Dan: hold my bear
The review three years in the making
Well I’m glad TENET was the first movie I saw when going back to theatres then 😅
Hi Dan, thanks so much for the review.
The thumbnail explains all...😕
I saw Tenet in the U.K. on Wednesday. Be intrigued to hear your thoughts on it.
SPOILERS: HE'S THERE TO BUY A HOUSE
Sorry...what did you say? I couldn't stop looking at your IRONED T-SHIRTS HANGING behind you
Anya plays Colossus's sister.
Dan fought through a tropical storm and a pandemic. He's...dedicated...i guess.
Still love ya dan!
Happy Friday Dan. I was concerned that the film was just ok. That’s too bad. I will miss “The Countdown?” Be safe out there at the theaters!
Not willing to get covid for any movie right now, much less a sub par X-men film. Should’ve just dropped on Hulu or Disney+ for free. No one wants that Mulan nonsense
Finallyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
Hahahaha this movie had become the Chinese Democracy of superhero films... apparently yielding the same disappointing result.
While it was no Meowntdown, I really enjoyed this “Countdown? to ‘New Mutants’.”
QUICK CLICK. THANK YOU DAN. YOURE GOOD FOR MY MENTAL HEALTH
