- Come spend a full day with us! We'll share what a typical day is like from 5 am to 9 pm on our small dairy farm. There's cows to milk, feed, and let out. Alan has a new way to clean barn that is working like a charm! Jennifer goes over some DHIA numbers. The kids are goofy as usual, and more! It's a jam packed day full of things to do.
Hopefully the boys will join their dad when older to keep the farm going strong in future.
They are my babies. So are my horses. Just lost my oldest mule today to cancer. Was breeding now getting into dairy. Your family cheered me up sooo much . From Louisiana & Arkansas. Now live at family farm in South Arkansas. Had to subscribe to y’all ! God Bless you !!! 😊❤️

I highly doubt it will be in time. Once milk prices go up again that is if they do, most of your little dairys are done sold out. Right now milk at 19.00 hundred is not even worth it, hell that does no even pay for the feed, you have to be milking more than 100 cows these days to even break even for the most part.
Wym 19.00 hundred? Yes milk is on the low but you have butter and cheese that is more money, depends where you are from but where am from right now cheese is like 220 and butter like 19to20!

I’m watching this on October 2020. This so takes me back to the way I grew up on the dairy farm in a North east Iowa. We had a small herd. I worked for my older brother. He had 3 boys and a girl. So glad to see small farms like yours still out there. Then the fact that your 1 first generation. Don’t see a lot of that. It’s so nice to see your family out working together 😀🐄🐄🐄👍🏻

Love your videos. And the way you guys farm. I work on a large dairy in Vermont, milking 1200 cows. But I grew up on a small tie stall. I love that way of farming. Love your family. Best of luck and will be watching all your videos

Enjoyed your video. Raised on a small family farm in Bethlehem CT. Farm was sold in the early 80's due to my uncle's death and my cousin getting a grain dust infection damaging his lungs. Glad to see the tie stalls. We had stanchion barn switching to a milking parlor just a couple years before the farm was sold. Thanks for letting me take a peek.🇺🇸🐢🐄🚒🚑

very nice video. i live in europ raised on a 20 cow dairy farm.Dairy cows are very happy with grain you can see it on your video.The best feed is grass in the summer and good hay for the winter what you also do .So now you are feeding more or less distillers than soya for a better m.u.n.
We are feeding less distillers and more soy to raise the MUN to where we needed it to be.

Alan's Dad can't golf this time of the year in Minnesota, plus he has horses to keep working.
So, to expand the herd, how are you going to handle the extra cows? Will you need another barn to house the extra animals, like a loafing barn/free stall? You home school, do the AI, help with chores, probably keep the books plus be Mom and your off farm projects! Glad your Father-in-law helps.
Where to put the extra cows is kind of our dilemma right now. What we are thinking of doing is using our current heifer barn for the extra cows and keep our heifers in the pasture that's in between our two driveways. It's heavily wooded so the heifers would have plenty of shelter. If milk prices ever go up to that $28 a hundred again we would build a free stall but have it open to the pasture too.

Do I remember correctly, the only crosses you have are «Jersey X any breed heifer» I love to study (used to) bull chart, lines, pedigree, all around genetic, stuff like this.

Yes for the most part our crosses are all at least part Jersey. Every now and again we'll get an odd Swiss Holstein cross. I'm super interested in the genetics, and I live picking people's brains about what they pick for dairy bulls. I'm definitely no expert, but love to learn.

Not sure why your pipe leading out to the pit plugged, but I do know from experience if you have to pump manure out to a pit don't bed the cows with shavings or sawdust, when it gets into the pipe an added with water an manure it expands an gets rock hard in their.
We found that out the hard way...that's what plugged our underground pipe. We know other dairy farmers that use shavings just fine, but we will never use them again. Normally we bed with chopped straw, but straw was in short supply and more expensive than the shavings.
I found that out years ago the hard way also, do it's straw an corn stalks for my bedding now, but shavings are nice if you can use them

Great videos although I have to disagree with you on saying that the manure lagoon is not much to look at. Considering the high cost of lime and fertilizer I would say that the lagoon is probably one of the prettiest places on the farm. I know I'm a little strange. Lol

i’m really interested in owning my own dairy farm when i’m a bit older i am obsessed with cows 🐮 they have been my favorite animal for a long time now and a lot of people make fun of my obsession me loving cows has affected my diet even i no longer eat steak or beef it just hurts me to much to know it’s a cow and a lot of my friends seem annoyed that i don’t eat that stuff anymore but it is completely fine because i love them! i am really interested in cows and like everything to do with farms i would love to learn more so i’m binge watching all of your videos love you all so much ❤️❤️❤️🐮🐮🐮

Our cows get a free choice mineral powder, salt, and sodium bicarb.
I'd would have thought that old barn would have a barn cleaner like back in the day.
It did, but when my grandpa, built the addition in the early 80s he put in the lagoon.

LOL, a manure pond. That is so disgusting. Cows poop that much??? Wow, lol lol lol. I wish I could have a cow but I am too afraid of them and my back hurts too much to hand milk them and I would buy one for the milk. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Have you thought about certifying the herd organic ? Your breeds could work as organic
We've thought about it, but say we have something happen to one of my cows that she absolutely needed an antibiotic, then I would have to sell her. I don't want to do that to my girls.
Does the creamery you send to still pay a premium for the low cell count milk you produce?here in ny,some do and some don't.enjoy the channel,been around this way of farming my whole life.
I'd have to check for sure, I know that if it's high they'll dock you.

I actually found Brown Swiss the most unpredictable in production, disposition and longevity. Focus your breeding and management efforts. Holsteins are NOT the answer! Had Ayrshires giving 125lb/day. Without doubt, Guernseys could as well.
Holsteins were reported to have a rather ridiculous 1.7 lactation average! How can you possibly have surplus stock for sale to add to income?? Salvage value? Income over feed costs? You are definitely on the right track!
Hi, do you only live from the milk or have crops or raise young bullocks for beef?
Right now just the milk. We don't really have enough room to raise our bull calves. Our crops are just for our feed. We are starting a small beef herd though to supplement the dairy.

@@PS-on9sz what really helped us was we got an amazing deal on purchasing our farm, and all the equipment was already here, so we had very little start up cost. If needed, Alan has worked odd jobs here or there too, but not much.

I’m so glad to hear your insistence upon quality milk from healthy cows, so please impress upon Horizon and other companies you sell to to stop putting carrageenan into their dairy products. It’s no longer natural, quality milk once they do that. Dairy products do not need to be thickened.
I used to buy HORIZON heavy whipping cream at Costco, but it is too thick. And every brand I see adds carrageenan.
I know carrageenan has been tested on animals, and that its effect on humans is inconclusive, but I am always concerned and disappointed when I see additives in my food.
I suspect this is done to increase company profit, but it’s done at the expense of the consumer’s health. We like to be as healthy as your cows.
Carrageenan is something that has bothered me for a very long time. And now more and more reports reveal the FDA should reconsider their approval of it.
Carrageenan comes from seaweed and sounds natural, but I don’t want it in my milk. And when carrageenan is processed to make it into an additive and to thicken dairy products, it becomes unsafe.
Please encourage companies you sell to to leave dairy products natural. It’s bad enough that the FDA requires they be pasteurized and homogenized. I wish Raw milk wasn’t so expensive.

I think it is so interesting how cows look so fat on their bottom half but look so boney on their top half. I guess cuz all that weight just hangs down with gravity.

Hardest job ever, dairy farmer
I don't think mid teens is optimum for milk urea however looking at your cows condition I would be of the opinion that you are getting enough energy into them which is far more essential to cow health, and reproductive capacity. I am surprised that you are allowed to dock cows tails it has been illegal here for decades. Best of luck with your operation.
12 is the optimum number. We cannot dock tails. That rule was made in 2017. The cows with docked tails were purchased with that done.
That's interesting to know, here in Europe we aim for a reading of 25 however I have no idea what your test is or how it is calibrated, so I am going to educate myself on how the American system works, on most Irish farms which are grass based milk urea in the 30 plus levels are common and do cause problems with fertility and embryo mortality.
I'll ask my nutritionist too how they measure it.
Trinity Dairy actually you are given the MUN reading which for ease of explanation is roughly half of the milk urea reading we are given, basically if you are at 16.2 it is the same as us at a reading of 30, we would consider about 25 as the optimum which is near as damn it to your MUN reading of 12 so I stand corrected, by the way the little cow doing 9000 pounds or in our figures c. 4200kg would not be considered as a cull if here milk solids were good enough we average 520kg of ms per cow so we have a 400kg cut off but many jersey cows produce milk in excess of 10 percent solids , then again we are paid for solids and penalised for volume so a high solids low volume cows are not necessarily a bad cow from a financial point of view, if the cow produced 435 kg of solids attracting a far higher price per litre due to the solids content she may actually pay better than the average cow in our system. Do you get paid for solids or solely on volume? Do you milk record? And as my father used to say " you can double the amount of milk you get from a low output cow in two generations of cows but it will take many generations of farmers to double the amount of milk solids produced by a good herd of cows.
Thanks for the MUN information. In the US we are paid for volume primarily and then we can get a premium for components. I had no idea you would get punished for volume! I don't know if our creamery still does it, but they used to pay a premium for volume.
where is calfs?
Our young calves are in the barn, our older calves are up in another barn, once they are breeding age they go out to pasture.
Uncles mun runs around 12 to 13 all time
I wish we could get ours to around 12. We are getting some dairy hay this week so that should help it.

Hello, I'm new to your channel and even though I am not a Farmer and live in Massachusetts I have allways been fascinated with cows on a dairy farm, some people think I'm strange because I like the aromas that go with a dairy farm, manure, fresh cut hay, the feed for the cows and the machinery on a farm, calfs and cows are so curious and I think they like to have someone scratch behind their ears, and they like to lick you too lol, I know that sometimes a cow is slaughtered for hamburger and I know it's a fact of life but I feel sorry for the cow, I think I would get too emotionally attached to them, but I wish I had been raised on a dairy farm.
It is hard because we do get attached, that's why I love when we can sell one of our cows to a family for a family milk cow. Definitely makes it easier. Thanks for watching!

Someone tried to tell me that... If who ever is contracted to pick up your milk.. IF THEY ARE A NO-SHOW.. to pick up your milk, is it up to you to decide what to do with your milk, " MEANING CAN YOU CHOOSE TO DUMP IT OR CAN YOU CHOOSE TO GIVE IT AWAY" or can you be ORDERED you to dump it By the very company that you have a contract with who failed to show up to collect the milk ??????
I can only speak for our situation, other creamery's may have different rules. But in our case, we can do what we want with our milk, for instance, when our road was flooded and the milk truck couldn't get to our farm, we gave a lot of that milk to neighbors that had pigs they could feed it to. The only thing we can't do, is advertise to sell raw milk, but that is from the state, not the creamery.

She is a first calf heifer and when she was learning her stall she never put her head in the stanchion, she always put it where the board is now. We just hung the board to teach her where to put her head. Works great
