Silk worms were the extra fatty that should be no more than once a week. My Chameleon (veiled) loves horn worms more than life itself
I just re-watched my video (just to make sure I didn't misspeak) and confirmed that I don't say that hornworms or silkworms are fatty which is accurate. They are only 3% fat according to this chart: www.reptifiles.com/feeder-insect-nutrition-facts-chart/. The reason I said hornworms are a treat is because they are low in protein at only 9% compared to other feeders that are closer to 20%. Silkworms can be feed as a staple feeder and are an excellent choice being low in fat, high in protein, and high in calcium. Superworms are the ones you want to use as a treat and are high in fat. Hope this clears things up!

I mostly feed mine banded crickets. Only one will eat the dubia. Bsfl flies seem to trigger hunger strikes. But very hard to get enough flies to feed 10 chams. An even amount per feeding. My big boy will eat like 25-30 in about a hour. Hornworms I only feed monthly or extra hydration in the winter. An silkworms seem to be the best. But very costly an hard to get them to grow. Hornworms are easy to grow. Long as food is added. Watching this video got me overwhelmed. With cricket low ball numbers:(
This is a pretty old video at this point and I am working on redoing it. But in the meantime let me give you some peace of mind and say that crickets are a totally fine bug to feed to your chameleon regularly. I'd also suggest feeding the BSFL in the larvae stage since they are high in calcium.
Curious what state are you located, because usually everything you name cost higher than what I buy it for in California. Even the commercial stuff. I get hornworms 10 for 7.50 and crickets 12 for a dollar.
Thanks for all your amazing videos. We are 1 week into our new 3.5 month old male panther chameleon and you have helped us a TON. Question about BSFL vs. crickets. About how many BSFLs would the equivalent be of about 12 small crickets per day? Just trying to figure out how many BSFLs and small dubias to feed him daily. Want to make sure he is getting enough each day. TIA!!

I'm looking forward to feeding my chameleon superworms as treats in order to bond with him and provide a varied diet. Can juveniles eat superworms or do they have to grow bigger?
I think reptiles are so cool but I'm so grossed out by bugs! I don't think I could have a pet reptile or amphibian for that reason but I like watching videos of them! They are so cool!
@@NeptunetheChameleon Ok thank you, can they also have small mealworms or small hornworms when they are little for treats? My Petco also carries wax worms and calciworms if they can have those sometimes. I will also give it some fruits and vegetables.
Paloma Ayala I would not recommend mealworms for a chameleon since they aren’t very nutritious. Hornworms grow very big, very fast so those might be challenging for your guy to eat. Wax worms could be a good treat. Calciworms are the same thing as black solider fly larvae and make a great feeder. Chameleons are insectivores so it’s unlikely they’ll eat the fruits and veggies you offer. Instead, feed the fruits and veggies to the bugs prior to feeding them to your chameleon.
How old would you recommend a chameleon to start eating hornworms? Also would you recommend starting with small or medium or large? Or does it depend on the size of your chameleon? Also how much hornworns would you feed a chameleon daily?
@@NeptunetheChameleon After you recommended Black Soldier flies I ordered some off of Chewy that looked small enough. He's still young and alot of live bugs and worms I found that were suitable for chameleons just looked too big. My chameleon diet is 60% flies 30% crickets and 10% locusts and it's the healthiest and best diet, my chameleon is 7 years old and still going strong 😃
I rescued my chameleon from the wild. I live in Malta but I’m English and found her on a roof where I was working being cornered by 2 cats that were attacking her. So I picked her up went to release her in a field with lot’s of trees as me and my son went to put her in a tree we were amazed as she kept coming back to us...I mean she kept coming towards us. So I did some research with your help got an enclosure and 5 months on she is a happy member of our family. She’s a common but not to us she is special. She loves being hand fed crickets and mealworms Thanks for all your videos it’s been very helpful.
Things you learn in nature camp: always cut away from yourself. I get so anxious when I see someone cutting towards themselves ^^’ great video! Very informative!
Also... could I feed my veiled chameleon Dubias as a main bug staple? I also feed him a bigger variety of bugs and worms too, but for the most part, every day could I feed these to him?
Teagan Green I’m currently working on a feeding all of my chameleons video. Stay tuned. I try to feed at least 1 type of bug that has an exoskeleton like a roach and 1 type of bug that doesn’t with each feeding but it also depends what bugs I have in hand. How much you feed a chameleon is going to depend on how old they are. I have a video about that already: ua-cam.com/video/E5P1OJV-tYU/v-deo.html
I would love to see how you keep your feeder bugs! Do you have a video on that? Like which bugs need substrate, what each pefers to eat, which bugs need the egg crates, how big each plastic tub is, how to clean them out... or can they stay in the cups they were shipped in? Love your videos!
@@NeptunetheChameleon thank you! Those were really helpful. I'm glad to see you are also not a huge bug fan because that's been the number one reason preventing me from getting a chameleon. 😆 but I'm planning on getting one soon after my enclosure is finished.
I've had my chameleon for months now but I still keep coming back here haha, what's your opinion on locusts as my guy has been eating them pretty much all his life? I'm gonna introduce him to some new bugs now though
My chameleon does not like crickets he just looks at them as they hop past him so I’ve moved to adding meal worms but as soon as those get close to running out I’m gonna add the black soldier larvae. Hopefully he likes them!
I have a 6 month old veiled chameleon who only eats crickets. Is it safe for me to do the "tough love" approach to get her off crickets? I hate to restrict her diet when she is still so young and growing. Please reply! Many thanks!!!!
Your videos are really amazing! I have a question, I recently got Hydei fruit flies for my green tree frogs and I was wondering could a adult veiled chameleon eat those? Would they be to small?
Какими ещё видами тараканов можно кормить? Кормите ли вы мраморным тараканом(Nauphoeta cinerea )или туркменским тараканом(Blattella germanica), мадагаскарским тараканом( Gromphadorhina portentosa)?
Josh’s frogs had silkworm yesterday when I ordered. I got them today and my Cham is obsessed! So glad I was lucky to snatch them. Worth the price for sure.
There aren't many worms that are high in protein and most are just fatty, treat bugs so I wouldn't feed just worms. If you're not comfortable feeding roaches, I'd suggest you feed your chameleon crickets in addition to worms.
You are very welcome :) Each bug has different care requirements, so they are all stored separately. Here is my video about how to store superworms: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.htmlm08s Eventually I'll make videos about all kinds of bugs.
I love your video Neptune is so cute . how do you keep the bugs alive if you get them in bulk thank you . Also my mom has a garden with horn worms in it can I feed it to a chameleon ?
Hornworms found in gardens are usually eating tomato plants which are toxic to chams. I also wouldn’t feed your cham bugs you find outside in general since you don’t know what the bug as come in contact with. Each bug has different care requirements, but this is how I set up my superworms: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.html
The big guy Ziggy looks at Dubai Roaches with utter contempt and never taken one. Would love to find a UK supplier of those Horn Worms though but they’re apparently illegal to sell here. Never liked the smell from crickets - not an offensive smell but noticeable.
HI everyone, just wanted to recommend a great place for feeders' its called Mulberry Farms Located in Fallbrook CA. I order most of my Cham food from them' AWESOME!!!!! they have buy 2 cups' get 1 cup free of hornworms. Im not affiliated with them' just a satisfied customer.
What about fruit flies?? EVERYTIME I go to the pet store to get my cham food they’re out. Also, I have a baby not sure how old exactly probably 6-8 weeks she’s only eaten crickets I heard you can get baby larvae hornworms but since she’s small I don’t think so I’m unsure. What would you MAINLY recommend I feed her besides crickets?? I know that’s what the whole video was about but I’m just a little curious because I want to get her to trust me more and to really want to come out onto my hand from time to time so what would you use, as another main source of food for a baby around her age other than crickets. Another question not really relating to this but I saw a picture of a cham cage and it had like those long toothpick type things if you know what I’m talking about and they used some of those for their cage as branches? Is that ok to do? It was a baby and I was wondering if I should do that for my baby too or if it’s a bad idea? I plan on visiting my local lake place with lots of trees to find some branches for her enclosure as well how do you tell which branches don’t have tree sap, which ones to grab and are ok???
Fruit flies are really only for tiny babies. If she is taking down crickets, then she could also probably eat XS dubia roaches, BSFL, XS superworms, wax worms, etc. It's just about finding the appropriately sized feeder that is not wider than the width between their eyes. And remember variety is key. You shouldn't strive to just feed 1 or 2 main bugs. Use treat bugs to try and build trust. I have a video about that too. I'm not sure what you're talking about with the toothpicks. I just recommend using real branches from outside.
Just got my baby veiled chameleon. Would a diet of crickets, BSFL, and mealworms be good long term? Too scared to feed him greens because I don't want him touching pesticides :/
Chameleons should only be fed bugs so no need to worry about trying to feed them greens. I would try to swap out the mealworms with a different bug since mealworms aren't a great feeder. But crickets and BSFL are excellent options!
I would like to know how frequently you feed them each type and what types of plant foods they can eat! If the hornworms, super works, and wax worms are all sort of snacky foods, what is best for their basic nutrition/“regular” foods! Thank for your videos, they are so helpful for beginner keepers!
I'll add your ideas to my video idea list :) Here is a video about gutloading that goes over what kind of plant foods I feed my bugs: ua-cam.com/video/nJFVKeyfpRE/v-deo.html Dubia roaches, silkworms, and crickets are probably the most popular staple foods for most keepers. But really variety is the most important thing in a chameleon's diet. And you are very welcome 😊
'Staple foods' refers to the foods keepers feed the majority of the time which is usually roaches, silkworms, and crickets. So those are the ones that get feed the most often. I personally feed my chams dubias and flies the most. BSFLs and superworms are probably the bugs I feed the next most often. And wax worms and hornworms are definitely treats so I'll only order a few of those and feed them throughout the month.
Wow. So you're screwed no matter what you choose to feed your chameleon? Either your recommendations have little to no nutritional value, they're too expensive, or too hard to get. I thought you were waiting to the last for the best recommendation until I realized - you didn't have one.
This is an older video that is due for a makeover. Crickets and dubia roaches are the two bugs that are most-used and recommended. Breeding your own bugs or buying them online can help reduce costs. There are also lots more options for bugs online versus in-person. Here is my link that has all of my discount links you can take advantage of: linktr.ee/NeptuneTheChameleon

My oldest is addicted to hornworms and my youngest is obsessed with soldier flies.
A chart or a google docs link would be super healpfull. Other then that it was a lot of good information. I am relatively new, I would love to hear about diets and how much should be provided based on size, not sure if species would also effect this?
im new to this since I only have a creasted gecko and I don’t feed bugs and i’m planning to get a veiled chameleon maybe in 3 months or when i’m ready but will i need to go to the store a lot or can i grow like my own “colony” or so of the different kinds of feeders
Jasmine Andrade You can certainly breed your own bugs. This isn’t something I’ve done before, so I can’t really offer any advice on how to do it. But there are tons of resources available that will help. I just buy my bugs in bulk which will last me around 2 months before needing to buy more.

I get hornworms 10 for 7.50 and crickets 12 for a dollar.
where i live Dubia roaches are illegal so you think there’s anything i can substitute for that i’m buying a veiled chameleon soon
Here are legal roaches: www.chameleonforums.com/?_pwa=1
How much variety do you recommend? Three different feeders? Four?
As many as you can provide! The more variety the better :)
TIA!!
Depends how big the BSFL and crickets are. I’d offer him 10-15 large BSFL. At that age, let them eat as much as they want.
How about locusts?
Alex Marr Very similar to crickets. Great to feed to your cham. I just can’t get them where I live.
Always cut away from your hand and or body. I would hate to see you cut your sweet fingers or any other part. Always be safe when using any knife. Another great video.
What about grass hoppers I catch in my back yard?
I would not recommend feeding your chameleon wild bugs since you don't know what they have been exposed to (animal poop, pesticides, etc.).

I'm looking forward to feeding my chameleon superworms as treats in order to bond with him and provide a varied diet. Can juveniles eat superworms or do they have to grow bigger?
Yes they can eat them as long as the worms aren't thicker than the width between the chameleon's eyes.
@@NeptunetheChameleon What kind of Dubia is the best feeder (juvenile nymph, adult male or adult female)?
@@raptilian Depends on how big your chameleon is. Just make sure the dubia is not bigger than the width between their eyes.
So no matter the size, they have the same nutritional value? If that's the case, then it's no problem.
I think reptiles are so cool but I'm so grossed out by bugs! I don't think I could have a pet reptile or amphibian for that reason but I like watching videos of them! They are so cool!
And that’s totally okay! That was the hardest thing for me to get over before getting my first chameleon.
@@NeptunetheChameleon Thank you for the response! Your chameleons are very cute!
@@NeptunetheChameleon Maybe some day I'll rescue a tortoise from a shelter! Apparently they are vegetarians! Of course I'd do my research first :)
I was wondering because I am planning on buying one can you feed it a earth worm
No you cannot.
Are crickets a good staple food?
Yes. But have to keep in mind variety is very important in a chameleon’s diet.
Got it will do thank you!
for me
dubia roaches
horn worms
black solider fly larvae
Great choices!
I'm getting a baby valid chameleon soon what should the main insect be to feed it?
If they are at least 3 months old then you should be able to feed them small crickets, dubia nymphs, and small BSFL.
@@NeptunetheChameleon ok thank you so much for all your help.🙂
Paloma Ayala 👍🏻👍🏻
What species is Neptune?
Furcifer pardalis -- also known as a Panther chameleon :)
How old would you recommend a chameleon to start eating hornworms? Also would you recommend starting with small or medium or large? Or does it depend on the size of your chameleon? Also how much hornworns would you feed a chameleon daily?

Do u know any breeder or forum in Asia that i can buy a chameleon? im recently in Vietnam
No I don't :( If I learn about someone, I'll be sure to let you know!
Is it okay to feed your chameleon bugs from around your house? I constantly have caterpillars in my garden and find crickets all over the place.
That's not something I'd recommend doing. Those bugs could be carrying parasites that would then be passed to your chameleon.
My problem is finding small enough food for my vieled chameleon. All I've found so far are meal worms.
Have you tried looking online? I have a discount link to an online place in the description box.
@@NeptunetheChameleon After you recommended Black Soldier flies I ordered some off of Chewy that looked small enough. He's still young and alot of live bugs and worms I found that were suitable for chameleons just looked too big.
He hasn't ate much in the past day and a half and I'm worried the meal worms don't suit him. I bought some vegetables that I read they liked so hopefully that and the meal worms will be good enough until the larvae come in.
@@limericky8548 Chameleons should not be fed fruits of veggies. The fruits and veggies should be fed to the bugs. XS dubia roaches, silkworms, and BSFL should be small enough for your little guy.
@@NeptunetheChameleon I'm getting so much conflicting information at this point.
My chameleon hated mealworms he ate two and never touched them again
Jay Kennedy Funny how some chameleons love certain bugs while others don’t.
Can you make a video of the way you take care of your bugs, which substrate to use, how long should they live etc.
It's on my list of video ideas :) I already did one for superworms that you can check out here: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.html I didn't mention how long superworms live, but it is a very long time... like months and months haha
My chameleon diet is 60% flies 30% crickets and 10% locusts and it's the healthiest and best diet, my chameleon is 7 years old and still going strong 😃
What flies
I rescued my chameleon from the wild. I live in Malta but I’m English and found her on a roof where I was working being cornered by 2 cats that were attacking her. So I picked her up went to release her in a field with lot’s of trees as me and my son went to put her in a tree we were amazed as she kept coming back to us...I mean she kept coming towards us. So I did some research with your help got an enclosure and 5 months on she is a happy member of our family.
She’s a common but not to us she is special. She loves being hand fed crickets and mealworms
Thanks for all your videos it’s been very helpful.

Neptune the Chameleon lol I’ve already watched that vid!
I would love to see how you keep your feeder bugs! Do you have a video on that? Like which bugs need substrate, what each pefers to eat, which bugs need the egg crates, how big each plastic tub is, how to clean them out... or can they stay in the cups they were shipped in? Love your videos!

It’s likely they’ll be too small for your cham to be interested in them, but you can certainly try!
I have a meal worm eat its way out of my Rainbow Lizard back in the 1990's. He ended up dying. Never feed them to anything ever again.
Mine died very quickly, and my chameleon didn’t seem to like them any more than the BSFL lol
Why don't you use crickets you didn't link the video.
I tried to feed my chameleon some crickets today and she’s scared of them
so would i be able to feed them only worms?? i don’t like roaches and would love to just stick to worms if possible!
There aren't many worms that are high in protein and most are just fatty, treat bugs so I wouldn't feed just worms. If you're not comfortable feeding roaches, I'd suggest you feed your chameleon crickets in addition to worms.
Hi Actually feed mine crickets is this bad?
Chameleon candy is wax worms
Thanks for this video! So informative and it helped me so much. Where and how do you store all of them?

I love your video Neptune is so cute . how do you keep the bugs alive if you get them in bulk thank you . Also my mom has a garden with horn worms in it can I feed it to a chameleon ?
Hornworms found in gardens are usually eating tomato plants which are toxic to chams. I also wouldn’t feed your cham bugs you find outside in general since you don’t know what the bug as come in contact with. Each bug has different care requirements, but this is how I set up my superworms: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.html

Thanks for sharing!
I'll add your ideas to my video idea list :)
Here is a video about gutloading that goes over what kind of plant foods I feed my bugs: ua-cam.com/video/nJFVKeyfpRE/v-deo.html
Dubia roaches, silkworms, and crickets are probably the most popular staple foods for most keepers. But really variety is the most important thing in a chameleon's diet.
And you are very welcome 😊
Neptune the Chameleon awesome! So you don’t feed them more of one kind than an other, just an even variation?
Managed to get my hands on some dubai roaches (live roaches aren't legal feeders here). He shot at it, held it in his mouth for a moment. Then turned to me, dropped it, and gave me the most angry colours with the most disgusted disapproving chameleon face ever.
My oldest is addicted to hornworms and my youngest is obsessed with soldier flies.
They definitely all have their favorites! Neptune loves superworms, and Apollo & Luna love hornworms.
A chart or a google docs link would be super healpfull. Other then that it was a lot of good information. I am relatively new, I would love to hear about diets and how much should be provided based on size, not sure if species would also effect this?
Luckily there are already lots of bug nutritional charts available online :)
im new to this since I only have a creasted gecko and I don’t feed bugs and i’m planning to get a veiled chameleon maybe in 3 months or when i’m ready but will i need to go to the store a lot or can i grow like my own “colony” or so of the different kinds of feeders
Jasmine Andrade You can certainly breed your own bugs. This isn’t something I’ve done before, so I can’t really offer any advice on how to do it. But there are tons of resources available that will help. I just buy my bugs in bulk which will last me around 2 months before needing to buy more.
Neptune the Chameleon Thank you for the info it’s greatly appreciated
