I rescued my chameleon from the wild. I live in Malta but I’m English and found her on a roof where I was working being cornered by 2 cats that were attacking her. So I picked her up went to release her in a field with lot’s of trees as me and my son went to put her in a tree we were amazed as she kept coming back to us...I mean she kept coming towards us. So I did some research with your help got an enclosure and 5 months on she is a happy member of our family. She’s a common but not to us she is special. She loves being hand fed crickets and mealworms Thanks for all your videos it’s been very helpful.
None will smell if kept correctly. You can breed crickets using vermiculite as bedding and that will erase the smell. I breed Dubia Roaches, Mealworms, Waxworms, Crickets, and Superworms in my room and I live in a single wide trailer. Dubia Roaches are amazing because they have a slow metabolism therefore your gut load lasts several days. Crickets, mealworms, and superworms are a lot faster. So you have to pretty much gutlod them the night prior to feeding and feed them off the next day.
Yeah black soldier fly larvae stink pretty bad! I had to give them a "bath" it got so bad. And when I let kiwis sit too long in the gut leader cup, I had to give my dubias a bath lol. User error for sure on that one 🤢

Have heard that Horn worms are great for hydration (you confirmed). But you said very fatty, others have indicated they should be one of the main sources of food, supplemented by the others. Silk worms were the extra fatty that should be no more than once a week. My Chameleon (veiled) loves horn worms more than life itself
I just re-watched my video (just to make sure I didn't misspeak) and confirmed that I don't say that hornworms or silkworms are fatty which is accurate. They are only 3% fat according to this chart: www.reptifiles.com/feeder-insect-nutrition-facts-chart/. The reason I said hornworms are a treat is because they are low in protein at only 9% compared to other feeders that are closer to 20%. Silkworms can be feed as a staple feeder and are an excellent choice being low in fat, high in protein, and high in calcium. Superworms are the ones you want to use as a treat and are high in fat. Hope this clears things up!
@@NeptunetheChameleon yes that is correct. I re listened too. I enjoyed the video and somehow did an incorrect recall. Chameleons will be happier getting more horn worms due to your highlight/confirmation they are great for hydration. Apologize for the incorrect statement in first posting.
I love your video Neptune is so cute . how do you keep the bugs alive if you get them in bulk thank you . Also my mom has a garden with horn worms in it can I feed it to a chameleon ?
Hornworms found in gardens are usually eating tomato plants which are toxic to chams. I also wouldn’t feed your cham bugs you find outside in general since you don’t know what the bug as come in contact with. Each bug has different care requirements, but this is how I set up my superworms: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.html
Most of these aren't available in the uk apart from Dubia, crickets and mealworms, however we do get locusts what do you think of them. I have also found a regular suply of silkworms. What would be your daily feed for an adult panther. Thanks and keep the video's coming.
No to all of those. Here is my video on bugs not to feed to a chameleon which talks about the ones you asked about: ua-cam.com/video/lkQU2Ue3qbw/v-deo.html
Your videos are really amazing! I have a question, I recently got Hydei fruit flies for my green tree frogs and I was wondering could a adult veiled chameleon eat those? Would they be to small?
I've had my chameleon for months now but I still keep coming back here haha, what's your opinion on locusts as my guy has been eating them pretty much all his life? I'm gonna introduce him to some new bugs now though
Managed to get my hands on some dubai roaches (live roaches aren't legal feeders here). He shot at it, held it in his mouth for a moment. Then turned to me, dropped it, and gave me the most angry colours with the most disgusted disapproving chameleon face ever. My oldest is addicted to hornworms and my youngest is obsessed with soldier flies.
I have a 6 month old veiled chameleon who only eats crickets. Is it safe for me to do the "tough love" approach to get her off crickets? I hate to restrict her diet when she is still so young and growing. Please reply! Many thanks!!!!
I would like to know how frequently you feed them each type and what types of plant foods they can eat! If the hornworms, super works, and wax worms are all sort of snacky foods, what is best for their basic nutrition/“regular” foods! Thank for your videos, they are so helpful for beginner keepers!
I'll add your ideas to my video idea list :) Here is a video about gutloading that goes over what kind of plant foods I feed my bugs: ua-cam.com/video/nJFVKeyfpRE/v-deo.html Dubia roaches, silkworms, and crickets are probably the most popular staple foods for most keepers. But really variety is the most important thing in a chameleon's diet. And you are very welcome 😊
'Staple foods' refers to the foods keepers feed the majority of the time which is usually roaches, silkworms, and crickets. So those are the ones that get feed the most often. I personally feed my chams dubias and flies the most. BSFLs and superworms are probably the bugs I feed the next most often. And wax worms and hornworms are definitely treats so I'll only order a few of those and feed them throughout the month.
I buy discoid roaches since I'm in Florida. I've heard that they're similar in nutrition to dubias. They're super easy to take care of, don't smell, and are kind of cute. But sadly my chameleon isn't enticed by them! I'm curious about other types of roaches and mantids, too. I'd love a video about the rare buggos like that!
Kind of cute 😂 That's when you know you're a cham keeper. When you find bugs and plants cute haha. I have yet to try different kinds of roaches and mantids, but if/when I do, I'll be sure to make a video about them.
I'm a Floridian also and Lord knows we have all kinds of roaches 😳! I wonder if they like small palmetto bugs, German roaches or the regular Florida roach we're SO familiar with!
Just got my baby veiled chameleon. Would a diet of crickets, BSFL, and mealworms be good long term? Too scared to feed him greens because I don't want him touching pesticides :/
Chameleons should only be fed bugs so no need to worry about trying to feed them greens. I would try to swap out the mealworms with a different bug since mealworms aren't a great feeder. But crickets and BSFL are excellent options!
Curious what state are you located, because usually everything you name cost higher than what I buy it for in California. Even the commercial stuff. I get hornworms 10 for 7.50 and crickets 12 for a dollar.
What are BSFL? I live in Canada so no Dubia Roaches. My veiled is about 7 months old & the guy I bought him from knew nothing about them. He said it was his daughter's birthday present and wasn't the experience she was hoping for. I read & watch so much conflicting information on husbandry I just want to make my Ollie happy & healthy. He has a new enclosure coming next week.
Black solider fly larvae. Also known as calci worms & Phoenix worms 👍 I’ve got some good shopping lists and discount links available here to help you out: linktr.ee/NeptuneTheChameleon
You are very welcome :) Each bug has different care requirements, so they are all stored separately. Here is my video about how to store superworms: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.htmlm08s Eventually I'll make videos about all kinds of bugs.
There aren't many worms that are high in protein and most are just fatty, treat bugs so I wouldn't feed just worms. If you're not comfortable feeding roaches, I'd suggest you feed your chameleon crickets in addition to worms.
Thank you for all of your videos , I am a new owner and you are saving them !!! My chams are about 3/4 mos old should they eat more than just crickets ? And how old do they have to be to eat the horns etc
Congrats on the new chameleon! Definitely feed them more than just crickets. Dubia roaches, BSFL, and silkworms would all be great options. I would wait until they’re at least 6 months old until you feed hornworms since they get big really fast.
Found a wild veiled chameleon where I live in Florida. He was trying to cross a busy road. I would assume he came from the orange groves next to the road and he fed himself on our local insects 🤔?
This video has been very informative 😁 I'd also like to know what you think about breeding blue bottle flyes?? I've been doing my research and I think it wouldn't be that difficult 😅
I'm not familiar enough with the nutritional value of wax worms/moths to say for certain but I'm sure all of that info is available online. There's lots of bug nutrition charts out there :)
Thanks for all your amazing videos. We are 1 week into our new 3.5 month old male panther chameleon and you have helped us a TON. Question about BSFL vs. crickets. About how many BSFLs would the equivalent be of about 12 small crickets per day? Just trying to figure out how many BSFLs and small dubias to feed him daily. Want to make sure he is getting enough each day. TIA!!
What if you aren’t able to order dubia roaches from Josh’s Frogs? I recently put in an order but received an email that they are prohibited in my state. What is another everyday feeder option other than crickets?
Glad you liked it! I feed him everything discussed in this video except crickets, mealworms, and butterworms. (Also please avoid posting your question multiple times on multiple platforms. Makes it hard for me to know if it is the same person asking the same question or different people. I will get to your question in due time 😊)
placing my first JF order because of you :) I hate crickets because of the jumping and smell, but dubias aren't allowed in my state (finding this out was heartbreaking lol). I cant imagine potentially flying feeders are better, but I'm considering BSF larvae and maybe silkworms as a staple instead.
There are plenty of other roach species that are legal in FL (along with other states). You'll want to pick a bug that is high in protein for a staple feeder. BSFL and silkworms are great, but they don't have exoskeletons and the protein levels you'll find in roaches and crickets.
@@NeptunetheChameleon ok ok, i try to see your video on how to feed the chameleon but is privated, i will like to know like how many dubia roaches and bugs per day should i feed my chameleon, he is like 6-8 months old if im not wrong
The guidance is to not feeder them any bugs bigger than the width between their eyes. So just make sure the bugs are small enough and don't feed them hornworms until the are closer to 8 months old.
Dwezil Nuñez That’s not something I would recommend. You don’t know what parasites those bugs could be carrying, if they’ve stepped in animal poop, or have been sprayed with pesticides.
Any ideas on why a 5 month old (Panther) chameleon would actively start avoiding crickets and roaches? Everything was fine until his 2nd shed. This was 3 weeks ago and he has only eaten one cricket. He will eat meal and super worms but I know he needs more in his diet. I just don't understand where the aversion came from??
Because mealworms and superworms are high in fat. They’re basically candy bugs and the other bugs are broccoli. Here is my video about how to get them to eat the healthier bugs: ua-cam.com/video/waCeIkQE1hw/v-deo.html
I mostly feed mine banded crickets. Only one will eat the dubia. Bsfl flies seem to trigger hunger strikes. But very hard to get enough flies to feed 10 chams. An even amount per feeding. My big boy will eat like 25-30 in about a hour. Hornworms I only feed monthly or extra hydration in the winter. An silkworms seem to be the best. But very costly an hard to get them to grow. Hornworms are easy to grow. Long as food is added. Watching this video got me overwhelmed. With cricket low ball numbers:(
This is a pretty old video at this point and I am working on redoing it. But in the meantime let me give you some peace of mind and say that crickets are a totally fine bug to feed to your chameleon regularly. I'd also suggest feeding the BSFL in the larvae stage since they are high in calcium.
okay so i’m gonna be getting a 3-1 month old veiled cham in a couple weeks after i get everything for his cage setup and i just want to know what would be the best thing to feed them at that time in their life
Make sure the chameleon is at least 3 months old. You don’t want to purchase one that is younger than that. At 3 months old they can eat all the things discussed in the video except hornworms. Hornworms get too big too fast for a baby.
Hmm I don't know of anyone who has used Basil in their enclosures. But it doesn't seem toxic to humans or animals so you might be okay. This video goes over plants that are safe for chameleons: ua-cam.com/video/1eJ9jKXCGoE/v-deo.html and this is a list of plants that are for sure safe: flchams.com/chameleon-safe-plant-list/

I've had my chameleon for months now but I still keep coming back here haha, what's your opinion on locusts as my guy has been eating them pretty much all his life? I'm gonna introduce him to some new bugs now though
Locusts are also a great feeder. I just don't have access to them where I live. The more variety, the better!
thank you! :)
Lol I was on joshes frogs web and then you posted! :D
Teagan Green Good timing!
Florida has the most weird rules you can have a pet freaking alligator but not a pet dubia roaches
Why didn't Josh's Frogs list chameleons under the reptile list?
Roaches also have an exoskeleton (so do crickets) so I don't get the "don't feed mealworm" logic
Mealworms have high levels of chitin.
Funny, that its almost impossible to find silkworms in the us. I live in hungary and the most commonly available treat bug is silkworms
That's so awesome!
They definitely all have their favorites! Neptune loves superworms, and Apollo & Luna love hornworms.
what would I do if josh's frogs goes out of stock of the bugs I feed my chameleon and I need more?
There are plenty of other places to order bugs from: www.chameleonforums.com/sponsors/
@@NeptunetheChameleon Okay thanks!
Are giant mealworms good for chameleons? Like a staple or just a treat?
Just a treat 🍬
@@NeptunetheChameleon okay thank you
I have a 6 month old veiled chameleon who only eats crickets.
I'll add your ideas to my video idea list :)
Here is a video about gutloading that goes over what kind of plant foods I feed my bugs: ua-cam.com/video/nJFVKeyfpRE/v-deo.html
Dubia roaches, silkworms, and crickets are probably the most popular staple foods for most keepers. But really variety is the most important thing in a chameleon's diet.
And you are very welcome 😊
Neptune the Chameleon awesome! So you don’t feed them more of one kind than an other, just an even variation?
Where did you get your chameleon food bowl?
They are bird feeder cups from petsmart
Just got my baby veiled chameleon. Would a diet of crickets, BSFL, and mealworms be good long term? Too scared to feed him greens because I don't want him touching pesticides :/
Chameleons should only be fed bugs so no need to worry about trying to feed them greens. I would try to swap out the mealworms with a different bug since mealworms aren't a great feeder. But crickets and BSFL are excellent options!
A lot of these insect, such as hornworms, arent even available in Belgium. Idk if in other countries in Europe...
Hornworms aren't available in the UK either :(
Curious what state are you located, because usually everything you name cost higher than what I buy it for in California.
@@NeptunetheChameleon thanks so much!
Thanks for this video! So informative and it helped me so much. Where and how do you store all of them?
You are very welcome :) Each bug has different care requirements, so they are all stored separately. Here is my video about how to store superworms: ua-cam.com/video/o62aUhuo7mg/v-deo.htmlm08s
Eventually I'll make videos about all kinds of bugs.
I have a meal worm eat its way out of my Rainbow Lizard back in the 1990's. He ended up dying. Never feed them to anything ever again.
How long do veiled Chameleons live from 5-7 years
so would i be able to feed them only worms?? i don’t like roaches and would love to just stick to worms if possible!
Dumb question but do the black soldier flies actually fly? Or do they sit there making it easier for us to feed?
They actually fly :)
Would a 2 month old veiled cham be able to eat all of those options or should I stick with smaller bugs until he gets bigger
As long as you get a small enough size, they should be able to eat all of those bugs besides hornworms.
Found a wild veiled chameleon where I live in Florida. He was trying to cross a busy road. I would assume he came from the orange groves next to the road and he fed himself on our local insects 🤔?
I would get him tested for parasites to make sure he didn't pick up anything from the wild bugs.
Hi! Do you have like a chart summary of these ratings by chance? It would be really helpful for me deciding what to get for my new baby girl!!
I don’t have a chart. But you can find bug nutrition charts online 👍
@@NeptunetheChameleon thanks for all your help!!
I love your videos , can you show how is having a chameleon for a day?
DG Clips Thank you! This is already on my video idea list... Stay tuned :)
What do you think/know about using grub worms as feeders?
I’m not familiar with what a grub worm is.
This video has been very informative 😁 I'd also like to know what you think about breeding blue bottle flyes?? I've been doing my research and I think it wouldn't be that difficult 😅
Stephanie Preciado I’ve never looked into it, so I can’t really say. Best of luck if you try it!
@@NeptunetheChameleon thank you ! 😄
Sorry if this has already been asked but when the wax worms become wax moths do they become less fatty and more nutritional?
I'm not familiar enough with the nutritional value of wax worms/moths to say for certain but I'm sure all of that info is available online. There's lots of bug nutrition charts out there :)
Thanks for all your amazing videos. We are 1 week into our new 3.5 month old male panther chameleon and you have helped us a TON. Question about BSFL vs. crickets. About how many BSFLs would the equivalent be of about 12 small crickets per day? Just trying to figure out how many BSFLs and small dubias to feed him daily. Want to make sure he is getting enough each day. TIA!!
Depends how big the BSFL and crickets are. I’d offer him 10-15 large BSFL. At that age, let them eat as much as they want.
Are Calci Worms similar to the Black Soldier Fly Larvae??
Yes! They're basically the same thing :)
@@NeptunetheChameleon awesome thank you so much! Your videos have helped me SO much with my chameleon! You’re awesome!!
@@haleyrobichaud950 You are very welcome 💚
I found an enclosure that is 38 x 18 x 36. Would that be ok to use?
Yes!
What if you aren’t able to order dubia roaches from Josh’s Frogs? I recently put in an order but received an email that they are prohibited in my state. What is another everyday feeder option other than crickets?
Discoid roaches and red runners are legal in Florida :)
Would black soldier larvae be a good feeder option?!
How much variety do you recommend? Three different feeders? Four?
As many as you can provide! The more variety the better :)
Does the allergies happing only happen to butter worms.
To my knowledge, yes. And not every chameleon has an allergic reaction.
This is an awesome and informative video! What bugs do you feed Neptune?
In Germany, we learn to feed our Chameleons only with insects which are able to jump.;-)
That's the best way to do it! Chameleons love moving food 🦗
do you bread the dubia roaches and the bugs or you always buy online?
I always buy online.
@@NeptunetheChameleon ok ok, i try to see your video on how to feed the chameleon but is privated, i will like to know like how many dubia roaches and bugs per day should i feed my chameleon, he is like 6-8 months old if im not wrong
Hey can you please tell me what the best chameleon to get for a new owner❤❤❤❤❤
How exciting! Of course :) Here is my video on the best beginner chameleon: ua-cam.com/video/uBaU92kvMKQ/v-deo.html
is it okay to feed a younger/smaller chameleon these? will my little guy choke?
The guidance is to not feeder them any bugs bigger than the width between their eyes. So just make sure the bugs are small enough and don't feed them hornworms until the are closer to 8 months old.
My gal went on a strike of not eating supers because she loves DUBIAS so much.. thanks gus!
That's better than the other way around haha
I tried to feed my chameleon some crickets today and she’s scared of them
Can I give my chameleon bugs from my yard?like beetles?
What happens when you order dubia roaches online in Florida?
You won’t be able to. They’re illegal in Florida.
Excellent video, great information!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would a Mexican basil plant be unsafe or toxic to a veiled chameleon
Hmm I don't know of anyone who has used Basil in their enclosures. But it doesn't seem toxic to humans or animals so you might be okay. This video goes over plants that are safe for chameleons: ua-cam.com/video/1eJ9jKXCGoE/v-deo.html and this is a list of plants that are for sure safe: flchams.com/chameleon-safe-plant-list/
Hi Actually feed mine crickets is this bad?
I got a new chameleon and I was wondering can I give him black beetles they smell bad.
Hmmm are the superworm beetles? Most chams don't like those. I'd stick to the bugs talked about in this video.
Какими ещё видами тараканов можно кормить? Кормите ли вы мраморным тараканом(Nauphoeta cinerea )или туркменским тараканом(Blattella germanica), мадагаскарским тараканом( Gromphadorhina portentosa)?
Are the Black Soldier Fly Larvae a treat or an everyday meal?
Both the larvae and flies can be fed regularly 👍🏻
How many chameleon do you have
