  • Great Lakes Fleet vessel, John G Munson departed the Husky Fuel dock, decided to fuss with the ice via the Superior Entry. The Ice in the Superior Canal was no match for the Munson ! They are now out in the lake waiting for a few days to load ore at BN.

My goodness, she looks like an icebreaker and look at the ice on her sides. and bow! Beautiful ship!

I LOVE how the first moments are sped up and then slowed back down to real time!!! Great video!! The power of the Munson is unbelievable !!

It's easy to move when there's only "Someone spilled ice from drinking glass" amount of ice. Baltic Sea passenger ferries wouldn't even consider that as ice.
Even relatively thin ice would stop ship with such vertical bow.
And that ship wouldn't go anywhere, except maybe to bottom, when meeting real ice:

I like your use of fast-motion for the preliminary sequences, then real time/live audio as the ship passes. well done, sir

Beautiful mustache and eyebrows on the front! Somehow that color combo with the facial expression reminds me of the Little Red Caboose story my mom would read to me when I was a kid.

The sped-up shots really show it ... Look at that ice just submitting as she cruises along!

Jimmy Britt, not much anything because that's thin ice.
Only distance ship with that vertical bow would move forward in real ice is how much it could crush its bow shorter.
And actual sound of real ice breaking likely isn't what you think:

What kind of engine does she use? It’s pretty noisy which is amazing! I love those motors. It almost reminds me of the Titanic motors or the E.M Ford.

Yes there are websites, such as live ship tracking. There is also a ship schedule in the visitor center at Canal Park.

@@pole_barn_builder I spent two seasons on the Great Lakes back in the late 70's and I well remember going through ice in April at the beginning of the run and in December when ice was accumulating. Those late year runs were not fun because it was so cold. Sometimes ships had to call in ice breakers to get around.
