Hi Michelle thanks for sharing your experiences. I am looking forward to becoming an FA myself… I just got into the pool of candidates for west jet and still waiting for the training date. Do you know how long usually takes to wait before they let you know your training dates? I’m just curious and very much excited. Hi, thanks for watching! And best of luck! You’re one step away from training. I honestly can’t remember how long it took me because the first time I was put in the pool, they stopped the hiring process and I ended up not getting a training date (if you’ve watched my cabin crew journey, I’ve explained the reason why I didn’t get it. But I did sit in the pool for some time). When they started re-hiring, and invited me over for a final in person interview, I did not sit in the pool for too long. I think they called me up the next day after the interview to offer me a training date. But again, it was all about timing. You can be put in the pool for a maximum of 6 months. Just be patient. You’ll eventually get that dat! Good luck! 😊

For a 1 hour flight, do you just get paid for 1 hour? You don't get any for travel to/from work? Do you always bring your overnight stuff in case it changes when you arrive?
Hi, thanks for watching. We have certain rules to follow based on the collective agreement. We get paid a minimum 4 hours even if you fly for only 1 hour. But, there are some changes if you drop flights partially… in that case, you only get paid the flying hours. For turn flights/one day, I pack an overnighter (i.e. underwear, pjs, toiletries etc), just in case we get stuck somewhere, I am prepared. When I was still holding reserve, if I got assigned a turn on day 1, I take all my luggage worth for a 5-day trip because they can extend your pairing and you should be prepared. :)

Hi, thanks for watching. It really depends on your situation. I think if you’re a commuter FA, it would be a bit of a challenge, but a lot of FAs commute, so it’s manageable to some extent. If you’re considering and really wanting to become an FA and making a career out of it, then it might be better to move to a city where there is an actual base. The starting wage for FAs also depends on every airline, so it really varies. You might be able to find a rough estimation online. Hope that helps. Best of luck!

Thanks for this video. I am a new hire. I start training next week. Watching as much as possible to get an idea of what shifts are like. I live 5 hours from my base and no overnights offered at this airline :( I am disapointed about that but am excited to get started anyways. I was hoping to leave and get in the air for multiple days, see multiple cities and then return home on my days off. I take it WestJet does overnight shifts with lay overs? Or are you mainly back to base?

Hi, thanks for watching. I’m not sure where you are based. But in Vancouver, we do get a lot of layover pairings. Sometimes, we’re even away five days in a row. You can bid to avoid one day turns so you’ll be able to get the layovers, that way you’re able to make the most out of your pairings, especially because you live hours from your base. Hi! Thanks for watching! :) We actually do. However, most of our Europe destinations are operated by the flight attendants who are based in Toronto or are qualified to operate on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (which I'm not). Being based in Vancouver, we get the Hawaii destinations instead.
