I know it's always a hot topic on whether or not first world countries should help stop corruption and oppression occurring in foreign countries or if that just creates more issues, but it's this type of situation that makes me wonder why no one helped. Think of how many people were raped and abused here even though everyone in the world knew what was going on in that camp. Honestly super depressing to contemplate.

As someone who is a true crime junkie I don't get shocked to know people like this in the world exist. What surprises me is that most normal people are denial about such violence existing. It now makes sense why violence in countries or homes are so easily swept under the rug.
Most of the people look at the world through a " pink lens ". They refuse to see the reality. The possibility your neighboor, your family or your best friend or a coworker could be doing such things to others does not enter their mind until it is too late and the cops are asking about a victim. It is easy to look the other way in order to live in your " the world is a safe place " bubble. And most of us are lucky to traverse it without seeing the horrors happening on the daily basis. It is pure stupid luck.
And what's worse is that the Pinochet coup was done with the help of the United States. And so many still think USA is "the good guys"

The character romance was fictionalized but the horrible person was real and was imprisoned in 2004 and died in 2010. He was said to be jailed on the counts of abuse to children and many more horrible things.

For anyone wondering: "Based on true story" means pretty much that, while the cult, all the people aside the main characters, the antagonist, the crimes on and on are real. The main characters are fictional, which makes the whole film and story fictional. I think the end pretty much shows it very well.
I got about a minute into this video, and my interest was immediately piqued so I stopped it, and watched the film. Just finished it. Very good. And educational, as I had little to no idea just how bad things were in Chile.
now there is a mini docuserie in netflix about this cult made by a journalist, with the kids now adults telling their story.

@vlntn by the way, people were dieing of hunger when Allende had the power, so a lot of people had to change leave the country, he also expropriated a lot of companies making the country more poor and generating more hunger (there are a lot of books/old news that talk about how workers were complaining about the treatment they had when Allende expropriated) I am not defending Pinochet, he did a lot of bad things, but Allende is not good either.

The problem with these "based on a true story" movies, is you never know what was inserted based off of here say or is straight made up by writers to make the story more interesting, idk, if this was real, its sad what being physically weak in comparison to someone else can allow them to do to you. One riffle and she could have ended years of abuse and torture for dozens of innocent people. But violence is scary , so we run from it.

When I was 16 I went there twice, it's a beautiful place filled with green areas but that gives you an strange feeling all the time; we visited his house, he had a big piano, and big windows, but his room was closed to the public; we also visited the cemetery, it was quiet, and very far away, and on our way there we saw the place were they kept the dogs, and the entries to the tunnels that were on the floor, and the land they had to cultivate their food, it was really vast, they must have suffered so much when they recollected the food...

Yah… my aunt lived there as a young girl. I have photos and recordings. There were no legal or otherwise, consequences to the crimes committed on the girls and boys, and young women. Probably never will be.

I won’t say witch country but I am from South America and my grandpa met a lot of refugees from Chile and most are still friends with him, many tragic events happened in this time and I remember lessening to a singer called Victor Jara that got executed after being tortured for a couple of months, he was a great musician and made great music and to this day some of his songs are still popular and even traditional in many towns in South America

India's stance has always been clear since 1947... develop though self... get rid of foreign interference... The Swedish author Pascal Engman has written a very good thriller called Tierra Del Fuego/Land of Fire that in large parts revolve around Colonia Dignidad. It's the first part of a series of three books about a Swedish police sergeant named Vanessa Frank. I highly recommend to read them! A bit of a coincidence that Pius, in this movie, is portrayed by the Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist. He sadly died less than two years after this movie was released. R.I.P!

I think it was part of operation condor which was a CIA's operation aimed at exterminating communism in South America. I do know that the operation caused mass disappearances (los disaparesidos) throughout South America. However I'm fairly certain people did not even really know about or care about communism back then at least in Argentina. Anyway operation condor ended up being labeled as a means to kill dissidents, not communists, and the CIA proceeded to kill totally innocent people for their opinions, it was most common for them to be university students, they would fly over the rio de la plata and throw the students in with their bellies cut so they would sink.

In Chile communism was big, it still is, before 1948 were they became illegal, they were among the biggest political parties at the time, and even after they still were, they just changed their name but people knew it was them
They did that kind of thing all over the world where they had vested interests, then left the country way worse off than they found it after they couldn't (often literally) bleed anymore out of it and its people. And, yes, all under the guise of 'freedom' and 'democracy'.
