    This was very helpful, thank you. I have had years and years of therapy. What finally helped me heal was going INSIDE (yoga/meditation/mindfulness) transformed me. Meditation daily is what keeps me going. I am not sure talking helps people with childhood trauma...because talking non-stop about it...just retraumatizes the memories in their mind.
    Many, many years of talk therapy and drugs.....UGH, what a waste.

    This was so helpful, thank you for such a clear way to understand something I struggle with a lot in my work with young people who are in trouble with the law. I get very emotionally caught up in their lives but this 20 minute video has highlighted the ways I can alter my direction to be more helpful to them and keep myself balanced by healthy detachment. Thank you!

    Thank you Dr Snipes for sharing this in-depth and caring video. I have a big problem detaching from others without judgement. I also have a problem detaching from my feelings. Through DBT therapy, I have learned radical acceptance and loving kindness. These are great exercises to develop empathy both for myself and others.

    "Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day!"💕🙏💗💕

    Thank you for pointing out that instead of being judgemental, we must bear in mind that people who struggle do “the best they can with the tools they have”. That's such a good way of putting it. I have a question for you, so that I can be empathetic:
    Is it common for adolescents who have been severely abused and silenced with threats to stubbornly refuse to reveal what's upsetting them to anyone? Could trained mental health professionals who specialise in working with teenagers find it impossible to uncover what's wrong? Is there ever a precontemplation phase before such people become willing to reveal the source of their intense anguish?
    If so, how long could the timescales be, how patient must we be and which emotions could make opening up so difficult?

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  2 роки тому +3

      Is it common for adolescents who have been severely abused and silenced with threats to stubbornly refuse to reveal what's upsetting them to anyone? Definitely. They have been taught that behavior is not safe and may not know how to determine when it actually is safe. The abuser probably went back and forth between meeting the child's needs or even being nice and being abusive.
      Could trained mental health professionals who specialise in working with teenagers find it impossible to uncover what's wrong? The professional represents an authority figure. Unitl the adolescent can trust the person and does not fear the outcomes of speaking up, they will likely keep it inside.
      Is there ever a precontemplation phase before such people become willing to reveal the source of their intense anguish?
      Reluctant precontemplation: May fear they do not have the ability to handle the emotional turmoil of dredging up all that stuff, or if they do talk the therapist will judge, betray or abandon them.
      Resistant precontemplation: May be unwilling to talk because they are being forced. Like during the abuse, they feel disempowered.
      Resigned precontemplation: May fear if they talk they still won't feel any better or it won't help.
      The adolescent has endured extreme trauma, betrayal and disrupted attachment. Especially since it sounds like they are involuntarily in counseling, I would expect a long duration... if ever. The adolescent needs to feel safe, empowered and capable of handling the memories of the traumas.
