    Another way worked for mine, I used a hand vacuam brake bleeder pump connected to fuel line to carb, about 10 fast squeezes and good to go

    I have an 86 that I converted to electric pump with a carter P60504 a few years ago. This is a very reliable quiet gerotor pump. I used the original metal lines and spliced the pump and filter in just ahead of the rear cab mount on the inside of the passenger side frame rail. It sits for months sometimes but always self primes. The closer the better when the pump also has to lift the fuel.

    When you feed the fuel pump 18V, it pulls less amps than It does on 12V, meaning it runs cooler, so you're fine to run it on 18V. Now, if you were running it on 6V, you would very quickly burn the windings right out of 'er, because it's pulling more amps. More amps=More heat.

      How would I do this for a 2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe -automatic

  • @bcbloc02

    Would not of thought of that but it looks like it works and I don't think it would hurt anything short term.

    Thank you , this is the second time I have came back to your video. I first referenced this a couple years ago. I just finished a rebuild and I couldn't remember what I did to prime the pump. Did a search you popped up and it hit me "drilling battery". So double thanks!!. I used a 20 volt because that's what I have, no problem

    If you ever have to buy a new pump you might try a gerotor style or other positive displacement pump. They will draw fuel better on the suction side.

    What worked for me was pulling the line off the carb and filling the line with fuel then plugging it back in.

    In cases such as this my philosophy has always been, it bursts into flames it was probably not the right thing to do. 😅 you'll be fine.

    so it only has 12 volts to the pump when turning the key to on position but the electric pump needs more volts to prime . I wonder if a small capacitor that runs on 12 volts to charge up could be used with a toggle switch to crank the fuel pump then shut off once you turn the key on 🤔. course it would take long time but at some point the capacitor would need a small charge up from power as well. the drill battery is a good start/ ideafor starters 👍

    I had similar problem I had to relocate pump lower than the gas tank Gravity fed mounted on the frame rail that fixed it even with a low battery.start up every time

  • @Effay513

    It shouldn’t hurt a thing. It’s just a motor and a small jump in voltage won’t hurt it. Steve Meade is running his truck at 17 volts for his stereo no problem with other electronics

  • @tomreyn3610

    Mount your pump low, so it doesn’t have to pull.
    OR
    Way I do it, find the small vent tube that came to the old charcoal canister up front. Shoot a few PSI down the tube, pressurize the tank, and push the fuel to the pump.
    Works for me.
    Probably dangerous!
    Dunno.

      The bigger feed line I installed worked perfectly. No more priming issues.

    I don't think it will hurt the pump doing it short term like you do but i wouldn't want to feed 18 volts to that fuel pump all the time.

    The fuel-pump on my 98 Ram Van is on its last legs.....original pump and 280k miles.
    I let the fuel get too low and got 0-psi on the fuel-rail. Trying to prime it by starting it would just kill the battery. So yeah, I have to do the same thing as this vid shows....kinda sucks.

    Question what did you use to bypass the mechanical fuel pump to add the electrical fuel pump?

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  3 роки тому +1

      Use 3/8 fuel line and route from the new electric fuel pump.

    I like the truck...but if I put a magnum in with a carb I would use the front cover and water pump off an LA, with a cam snout extension and run a mechanical pump and be happy losing the serpentine belt setup....or go all fuel injection with pump in tank ....but the carb system is dead nuts simple to fix on side of road....not so much the F.I. system.

    Dude I have a brand new flame thrower & right outta the box the fuel pump NO GO,,,, beat on her with a rubber hammer 🔨 still NO GO!!
    watch this vid , slammed that 18vts from a Milwaukee fat bottom battery & whaaalhaaa She’s-a-hunmin!!!
    hooked all the one flame thrower back up , built in volt meter reads 11.3volts
    I test voltage with fluke at the fuel pump leads & im gettin 10.7volts
    But she hums/pumps fuel …. So we’re rock n roll!!!!
    Thank you for unintentionally pointing me in the right direction

    Anybody put a one way check valve before the fuel pump? I'm going to try it soon. These pumps are supposed to have one already, maybe not enough to stop fuel flowing back.

    FYI those little pumps like the one on your tailgate are garbage. The outlet side is pressed in with an o ring and it can pop out easily.

    Naw. Way I do it.
    Find the old charcoal canister vent under the hood and shoot air pressure down it.
    It will pressurize the tank and push fuel to the pump.
    Works every time.

      Depends on the vehicle. It has to have a mechanical pump provision on the block.

    You could just use a mechanical fuel pump that high output and never worry about doing all that priming.
    Why don't you do that.? Also a better electric fuel pump will pull the fuel ...mine always has
    .but I have a good high pressure pump. That little junk fuel pumps the problem..

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  2 місяці тому

      I have a magnum timing cover so I can not use a mechanical pump and yes, I could buy a better electric pump. I ended up installing a larger feed hose to the pump and no longer have an issue with the cheap pump.

    I enjoy your videos. Are you saying simply adding voltage to the pump beyond 12 volts allows the pump to prime ? I have a carburetor truck from the 80’s that only has a pump just like yours. The truck runs well and I have no issues starting or running. But, I have a clear fuel filter near my carburetor. I can keep my ignition on for 1-2 minutes and the filter will not completely fill with gas. Infact, I can see that no gas is moving period ? Would adding 18 volts change that ?

    • @TheGasTap
      @TheGasTap  Рік тому

      It’s possible. It could also be the pickup in the fuel tank clogged.
