    The ending is only controversial to people who are expecting a Hollywood ending. This show is successful in Japan and around the world precisely because it stays true to authentic Japanese values and doesn't include the typical american stereotyping that is so common in mainstream media.

    This show isnt about massive set pieces (same as GoT for the most part), its about an incredible script, 3-4 fantastic acting performances, character development, attention to historical detail and political intrigue. Its not the Last Samurai, very different. One actor in particular gives one of the best performances in 2024, IMO.

    • @MagdalenaBozyk
      @MagdalenaBozyk Місяць тому

      You know this show is based on a book, right? There's a book written in 70s, and also a show made in the 80s.
      While there is attention to historical detail (and fantastic one), the book itself changes characters and their behavior from the historical persons they are based on (the book has changed names and behaviors of some of the people, made single person out of several historical people and so on).
      Interestingly it also plays around with some historical myths and conspiracy theories about that time, that historians have even decided to look into again (seems like the show made them sound more plausible).
      The biggest conspiracy theory about that time period is that there is one instigator for that time's political unrest. Tokugawa is pointed out as the one that started it all, decades earlier - to end up as a Shogun. Historians have often thought of this as being too far fetched.

    Fun fact: Most of the characters in this series and the original novel is based each character on a historical figure, but James Clavell who wrote the original novel changed their names in order to add narrative deniability to the story
    For example:
    - John "Anjin" Blackthorne is based on William Adams or his Japanese name as Miura Anjin, an English navigator who became the first English sailor to reach Japan in 1600
    - Toda Mariko is based on Hosokawa Gracia, daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, the man who killed Oda Nobunaga as one of the three unifers of Japan
    - Yoshi Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, and he is my favorite historical figure who unified Japan as the first Shogun or chief military commander of Tokugawa Clan that still exist today

    also that a great way to learn differences between the west and Japan. Japanese people have a hierarchy, respect and honour means a lot to them and every word bears a heavy meaning, nothing is said in vain. They are ready to take their life if they have made a mistake and put their ego aside. Even Ishido as u saw in the scene where he fell on the cliff. He might be an ass, but he is ready to take his life if he's failed and that's what impressed and shocked blackthorn. Every word they say is thought out and calculated to either not offend anyone or be misunderstood. Like - it's a different level. In comparison to them we really were savages. And that's going to be one of the hurdles in Anjin's stay there - understanding the culture. Japanese people were very civilised and for the greater good and good of the society they have to be very tolerant and put their ego aside and bottle up their emotions. its a very tough but absolutely mesmerising culture and country

I usually feel cramped in my life (I'm used to it since I was a small child), and I make efforts for the local and national units. I think it is the same for people in other countries, but there is more pressure on them to be sympathetic. I caution myself that I wish that would lead to peace in my country.

      1. Thats Yabushige on the Cliff, not Ishido
      2. While Japanese culture is and was absolutely fascinating and has many commendable and good aspects, please dont fall into the classic trap of "positive Orientalism". Just because the society we see represented in this show was polite and all about honor and virtue on the surface, doesnt mean they didnt have just as many issues and barbaric aspects as european culture had at that time. Their obsession with death, a literal suicide cult actually, the overimportance laid on formalities and appearances at the cost of reality and peoples lives, their intense Isolationism and resulting xenophobia, just to name a few. They were neither more or less barbaric as Europe, they were just as much, to our modern eyes at least, only in different ways. Both Japan and Europe were savages back in those days, at least to our sensibilites. You make it sound as if Europe didnt have hierarchical structures and a concept of honor, chivalry and such. Of course they did. And just as in western culture the remannts and influence of these barbaric and irrational aspects and rigid, opressive heirarchical systems of their past have negative conseqeunces even now in the present which good people are still fighting to overcome and finally get rid of. It is wrong to both put foreign cultures on a pedestal AND to denounce them for their differences. Every culture has its positives and negatives, as do all things in life. And we should honestly and neutrally call them out for both.
      I also take great personal issue with you claiming that its "civilized" to act against your own human dignity and wellbeing for the good of your opressors (which it usally always was, not the good of "society", even in this show its always for the sake of this lord or that lord, they always say its for the good of the realm or the whole country but it obviously isnt, its only the seflish ambitions of the lords, and the lifes of their subjects means jack shit to them in pursuit of their egotisitcal goals. Bottleing up your emotions and accepting that your life and your wishes are worth less than those of a lord who is no different than you except his imagined "nobility" is ridicilous and a concept the world should have left behind ages ago, but unfortunatly we are still struggeling to do so as a species.
      That is actually one of the aspects of the show i really appreciate. They show and portray all of these aspects of the culture very well, but they also call them out on their bullshit sometimes through Blackthorne and show the hypocrisy of it all in the very End with the reveal of Toranagas lies and selifsh ambition.

    Shogun is based on a real story. Toranaga is trying to avoid a civil war which would involve a massive loss of life needlessly. Eastern thought seems foreign (pun intended) when it comes to strategy for a lot of people. Sun Tzu's Art of War is something to keep in mind.. Sun Tzu lay's out the case that you win a war before ever drawing a weapon or stepping foot on the field of battle. If you fail to first win mentally and via strategy, likelyhood is you are doomed to lose. Sun Tzu also believes in using your enemy against himself. So the end of the show winds up, without giving much away, disappointing some because people don't understand deep strategy or eastern thought on the matter. Keep that in mind and the ending is rather brilliant.

Unfortunately we weren't the best people when we had that power. How do I phase this for youtube comments. We engaged in forced unpaid labor and created the unpaid labor trade back in the day. So I doubt they had any problems pushing boundaries back then. Also, it's the America's. The land is way more fertile. The crops coming out of there ranged from potatoes, tomatoes and peppers all the way to corn. That alone changed the world and I doubt Portugal would want Spain to control the trade. After all, it was their ships and designs that even made it possible to sail across the globe. The ship was called the caravel. Christopher Colombus used that very ship too.

    The Emperor is spiritual leader, Shogun is war commander. Theoretically Emperor is above Shogun, but he don't have real power. There are no 5 shoguns, at that point of the movie there's not even 1 shogun.

    • @MagdalenaBozyk
      @MagdalenaBozyk Місяць тому

      While Shogun was a commander, they had administrative staff under them that did the actual administration of Japan, rather than the Emperor's administration.
      Shoguns were not only the type of title of country leaders. Another group of country leaders were kampaku. Kampaku, title-wise was supposed to be the closest advisor to the emperor. But in practice they ended up ruling the country.
      A retired kampaku would take on the title "taiko". Taiko is the father of the baby with the ruling council of five. Five specifically, because at the time in Japan there were five families that had the highest power. And it's I think these five families that tended to descend the country into war.
      There are theories that say that the person who is Taiko in the series (and there was only one taiko at that time, so everyone knew who it was) either chose not to become Shogun, or was not recognized as such. Theoretically the title of kampaku is higher than that of shogun.
      Toyotomi Hideyoshi is the historical person beyond the title. After defeating most of his rivals in battle during the Sengoku era, he decided to unify the country and take on a role of a central authority figure. We usually think of that title as "shogun", but he instead became a "kampaku".

    Im no expert on Japanese culture though i've read this book about 3 times over my life. But just to my limited understanding (which is enough to get the show) a Daimyo is a Lord. A Fief is the territory assigned to be ruled by someone. It is almost certainly more complex than that but without taking a Japanese history class you can understand the story with those two words explained. It's a beautiful story. I wouldn't have read it 3 times if it wasnt. Oh and the TV adaptation is pretty excellent and pretty faithful.

    • @MagdalenaBozyk
      @MagdalenaBozyk Місяць тому

      Fief is not a japanese word, but an English. Fiefs were the same thing in Europe.
      You can think of Daimyo as a high nobility title. The noble families who are just below the ruling family.
      Japan was basically a feudal society. While Europe at that time started to move away from feudal world towards marchant-driven world, Japan was still keeping strongly to the nobility=landed + providing military power.
      the concept of feudal system, as we know it, comes from the Western European feudal system. There were other feudal systems. But the term "fief" comes from it.
      The concepts evolve around lords, vassals, and fiefs. Fief is the translation of the latin word feudum. In general, the lord was a noble who held land, a vassal was a person granted possession of the land by the lord, and the land was known as a fief. In exchange for the use of the fief and protection by the lord, the vassal provided some sort of service to the lord.
      During feudal times, nobody cared about "nation" or "country" or "patriotism". All you had was your honor and that was based on your actions and your word. (There were no forensics to prove your guilt, usually. So if you were known to do wrong, and had witnesses against you who were known to be honorable - you were considered guilty, just by your reputation). You swore fealty to your lord, and you served your lord. Even countries were fiefs to other countries - hence you could have countries led by a king who swore fealty to the Roman Emperor.
      Even the lowliest peasant had a place in the hierarchy. He provided his lord with his produce, and the lord protected him and his family from bandits and kept the law locally.
      To make things more complex, marriages were strictly political at that time. Which means, that in certain periods of time, the lords had power over who their vassals were allowed to marry. Because they could out-position their lords. A noble family could get more rich and powerful than their king, by taking over a lot of other fiefs from the lands belonging to the king and in practice having more land and military power than the king's personal "fief" (the part the royal family kept to themselves).

      @@zeroknight4517 I hope if they do additional seasons then they'll make this show an anthology. the author has several more books in the Asian saga for adaptation. but it'll be difficult to guarantee the quality. @@zeroknight4517 sure, but one, the episode was left a tad open ended, so they could expand on that. They could show in more detail the trials of the war and before the war happened. They could also go the route of a war season, showing the adversities of that. They could also just do another storyline completely, with none of the characters from the original cast. They could show the effects of the war on different people, having a different time within the world and explore more with that. There are endlessly possibilities, all they have to do is make sure they take their time and do it correctly. I wouldn’t be mad if season aired two or three years from now, because I know they did a good job with it.

    Why is everyone saying that this is "Game of Thrones"? The story is much older than Game of Thrones.
    This series is about an actually existing man. All the names in the novel (it is based on a novel by the same name) are exchanged.
    Toranaga is Tokugawa, to name the few.
    The first episode is called Angin (Angin is a title of a ship Pilot/Navigator) after the book with the same title. About an Englishman who piloted a Duch ship to Japan. The man lived in Japan and also became Samurai. His honorary title was "Angin Miura" given to him by the Japanese. His real name was William Adams.

      I don't know what happened. Everyone (even the show producers) were saying "one season".
      Instead of being excited, I'm actually disenchanted and sad. They could leave the one-season as it was. They way the did the announcement of 2nd and 3rd seasons, seems to be based on the positive reaction of the audience and went for "we can milk this".
      There's not much more to be gained from the book. But there's probably more to be had from the books written about Anjin Miura.

Sitting cross legged and not on your knees because sitting on your knees lets you get up faster, speaking out of turn, fighting, opening a door, offering the most decorated side of the cup when you pass tea to someone as a host, everything is just hyper focused and sometimes for superstitious reasons. They just saw that there is an art to everything and perfecting it makes you look good, doing something mindlessly isn't really their thing but just like anywhere else in the world there is the classic torture and government ordered deaths.

    This is loosely based off of history, guys. Toranaga is inspired by Tokugawa. John Blackthorne is based off of William Adams. Mariko is based off of Akechi Tama/Hosukawa Gracia, and etc. Try not to look into it too deeply if you don't wanna get spoiled cos obviously, the historical counterparts' stories might spoil things for you. Just bear in mind, you have to pay attention. You will miss things. So much of the story is told in small gestures, metaphors, and the most inconspicuous of dialogue. This is not the 'next GoT'. It's an entirely different thing (that came BEFORE GoT) and, in my opinion, is a higher form of art.

    Please note.I am Japanese. At that time, there was no cure for leprosy in Japan, so Otani Yoshitsugu developed a severe skin disease as a result of the disease and began to cover his head from the neck up with a white hood, but in reality he was not a devout Christian, but a Buddhist. The greatest wish of the Christians from King Philip II of Spain was to make Japan their own, where gold, silver and other treasures could be found. Incidentally, from the end of the Edo period in Japan until the Pacific War, Britain encouraged Japan to be naughty because the emperor Daoguang banned the opium trade in China, leaving a large amount of opium surplus, and Japan traded with China in Nagasaki for vases, ink, accessories, etc., but the Tokugawa Shogunate, which married Toyotomi Kanko into the Imperial family and was at the top of everything in Japan, cracked down very strictly on Christianity (because Buddhism and Shintoism could not get along at all) and opium smuggling, and executed people at the stake. However, this was a major obstacle, so the British government planned to invade Japan from Shanghai, China, and destroy the Imperial Family in Kyoto and the Tokugawa Shogunate in Wakayama, Fukui, Nagoya, Yamanashi, and Ibaraki, Tokyo, in order to make Japan a colony under British direct control. They then set up British governors and governors in Nagasaki, Kyoto, and Tokyo, but when the British military administrative staff calculated the military budget, the cost of shipping between Britain and Japan and the cost of transporting weapons and ammunition exceeded the estimate by 2 trillion yen, so the plan was not approved by the parliament and was abandoned. Britain sent the British black market dealer Thomas Glover to Japan, and approached the samurai from Kagoshima and Yamaguchi who they had met during the Anglo-Satsuma War, and their intermediary, Ryoma Sakamoto. Because they sided with Ishida Mitsunari at the Battle of Sekigahara, they had been bullied by the Tokugawa family for about 150 years, were extremely poor, and had sworn revenge on the Tokugawa family for generations. So they were sent to England to study, had to learn about modern weapons, were given lots of opium, and raised to be terrorists who would destroy the Tokugawa Shogunate and put an end to the age of the samurai. Oh! Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi had gone through so much trouble saying, "Never let Christianity, a hunting tribe, enter Japan!"

    This show is very good but temper your expectations. It's based on one novel, and they cover the whole novel in this season. There won't be any more seasons. It's a mini series, one and done. It's good, but the worldbuilding....er, actual history....is so compelling that it really makes you wish there was more. Just gotta watch more historical fiction after this basically. Edit: Sorry! I was out of date. They decided to write more seasons after all. Also, the show is based on the novel, and the novel is loosely based on real historical figures and events. There were real guys who Blackthorn and Toranaga are based on and a similar political situation. But the historical context is accurate...i.e. how Japanese society was, etc etc.

      Mariko is also based off of a real person, and while she likely never met the real Toranaga or Blackthorn several other key events, like her backstory and ultimate fate did actually happen in real life.
      Also they announced two more seasons actually, it will go past the book so it wasn't originally intended but I guess the show was popular/successful enough the studio wanted more, and Hiroyuki Sanada is already signed on to continue. So the show will likely continue to follow later historical events that take place after the end of the book.
