      That's exactly why. He said outrageous things especially on his first 3 albums and managed to add humour into it. He's sarcastic but funny, used satire and not preachy. He wasn't supposed to be a serious wise rapper. So when someone say he didn't have content that person don't understand Slim Shady persona.

      Naw, he's not ready for any of those Old Beefs yet like Ja Rule, Benzino, Limp Bizkit, Everlast... For Diss tracks I think it'd be better for him going into it with some of the backstory so he can understand them more, I know he likes to go in blind most the time but diss tracks and history of beefs matter in the context of the diss.

    The only thing i have to say about this “rap battle”... is that MGK really messed up when he called a 15 yo “hot”. He tried to pick on the guy that paved the way for him to even have a career, & if that’s not the LITERALY DEFINITION of “don’t bite the hand that feeds you”, I don’t know what is.
    Also, Eminem is, and always will be, the greatest rap artist to come out of my generation, & I wish him nothing but the calm & peace that he was denied as a child.

      If you do check Knox out for a bit of history and context, just remember it’s (likely, in my opinion) a fully researched bar breakdown dressed up as a first listen. So don’t feel down, discouraged or demotivated that he catches everything (and it is pretty much everything, he is second to none with breakdowns) first listen and you don’t.

    • @Joey_Mendez
      @Joey_Mendez 2 роки тому +14

      Knox is encyclopedia of Hip Hop. If you see some of his non hip hop reactions, things fly over his head. Man lives and breathes hip hop. He has done songs pretty soon after they're out and still catches the insane amount of bars he does with other songs. He also does reactions live sometimes and catches everything live. You'll also notice that he catches things on a second pass over after rewinding it (something most reactors, let alone listeners, don't do). As someone who catches a large portion of what he does without as much knowledge as him, I don't find it hard to believe he does it first time. Those who can't do that come to the only logical conclusion that he is somehow "cheating". I'm assuming most do it out of lack of rap deciphering ability, but some just do it out straight out of bitterness, hate, or jealousy. That's why everytime I see this kind of talk about Knox or Ernest, I feel obligated to defend them. Only skillwise though, I don't always agree with their opinions on things, but I respect their ability.

    MGK spoke about Hailie back in 2012 (If I’m not mistaken) with a series of tweets and then mentioned her in a couple interviews around that time. It didn’t pop up on Em’s radar until prior to the making of Kamikaze. MGK also made a subliminal diss towards Em when he was a feature on a Tech N9ne track then he tweeted the bar but made it more obvious that it’s towards Em so Em replied with this then MGK tried his best with Rap Devil before getting put in his place when Em responded with Killshot

  • @VinceBarter
    @VinceBarter 2 роки тому +42

    Sir, dont be discouraged about feeling lost. Eminem on Kamikaze and anything after that is absolute god tier rap and can be hard to know whats going on if you're not used to it. I would love if you went through his whole discography one by one from the beginning. That's the first step to get a PHD on Eminem.

    • @lea88pu
      @lea88pu 2 роки тому +3

      I agree...He should start from the beginning bcs jumping from one song to another is confusing and hard to understand the references Eminem makes.

    • @SR1Records
      @SR1Records Рік тому +2

      It's not that easy. He won't get the entire rap culture just by listening to every single Eminem song ever written. It's not as simple as that because even in those songs Em is referencing stuff from other artists. For example, in this song Royce mentioned G Easy. Larry could listen to every single Eminem song ever released and he still wouldn't get that reference because the reference isn't from an Eminem song. But rap fans get it because they're fans of the rap genre and multiple artists, not just a single artist.
      At this point Rap and Hip Hop is a complex culture. You won't understand it all by knowing every single word from a single artist. Rap isn't like pop music. As a musician and producer, I'd say that Rap/Hip Hop is by far the most complex music style. Behind that it's probably Rock. And that's probably why they're so niche - because unless you're fully invested in it, you won't get the references.
      It's different with pop music. If you're even vaguely up to date with current events, you'll get the references in pop music (if there even are any).

    I paused this straight away to write this. There's a line in Killshot when Em says "pop champagne to this". The reference to that is MGK heard Em dis him on this song (Not Alike) and after the Kamikaze album was released MGK posted a video on social media of himself opening a champagne bottle because he could reply and knew it would blow up his career.
    Another little piece of insider knowledge is that MGK knew that was coming because someone from Interscope told MGK that Em was going to dis him so he should write a dis track to Eminem. I don't remember where the stat is of the top of my head, but Rap Devil was recorded in July 2018 (but released in September) and Kamikaze was released in August 2018. So clearly MGK was working on Rap Devil before Em released his album!

    Fun fact: Royce's name comes from his height, 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm). However, the numbers five and nine have been in his life numerous times as he "found his calling" as a rapper in 1995 and in his song "Tabernacle" he discusses his grandmother dying on the fifth floor of a hospital and his first son being born on the ninth. This, I felt, was more relatable than Killshot. I mean, when people don't see eye to eye (no pun) and there's a ton of this now and it sux. That's how much we have in common kinda rolls any hate off the shoulder. We have enough anger in this world, it's a little relief and becomes kinda comical. Thx again, bro.

    You know, Eminem had a super fan named Tom Macdonald who recently made a song called “Dear Slim” where he talks about how much Eminem motivated him and his career.
    He actually won an auction Eminem threw where he won a beat produced by Eminem and it’s NFT, a signed copy of Infinite, and some Eminem Shoes. He shot a whole homage to him, and it was amazing. I think he is the most successful truly independent artist in rap today.
    I highly recommend you do that next, and just juxtapose what a person like MGK did by dissing Eminem, an artist that inspired him in the past, and Tomas MacDonald who writes a whole love letter to Eminem while also claiming to stand on equal footing with Eminem, which is *ballsy.*

    yes, MGK talked about Hailie in that tweet, but Em actually was pissed about the subliminal diss MGK had in his song with Tech N9ne. "yall just rap, you are not gods", an obvious subliminal diss in reference to "Rap God".

It's SO much better to listen to a new song without the lyrics, you get such a better feel for the song and sense of what's going on if you're not concentrating on reading from a screen. That last line of the first verse by Royce is hilarious. He said he’s fit to be King but they’re cut out to fit in Prince pants. He’s making a reference to Prince the pop singer and Prince often wore assless chaps. So by Royce saying they’re cut out to fit in Prince pants he’s saying they’re ass 😂😂😂

    To be fair, Eminems recent releases (starting with Revival or Kamikaze) kind of tell an ongoing story referencing the current events in the world as well as in the hip hop scene. This was a little bit different in his older tracks which makes it easier to quickly jump into some of the classic tracks. So don't be ashamed if you don't get all the references Royce is talking about, the important part here was the one about MGK and you did well on this one! Keep up the good work!
    And I might just add again, as other people already said, if you like to learn more about the songs, you might wanna watch Knox Hill's breakdowns or read some explanations on the lyrics on rap genius ;)

    It's interesting watching someone who has no familiarity with Hip Hop slang/terminology, or the history and references trying to "break down" such a complex and technical song. I think if you have a genuine interest in learning and understanding this genre of music, you should watch some of Knox Hill's breakdowns. He's a technical and lyrical rapper who is very adept at pointing out the references, the wordplay, the nuances, and the technical structure of the rhyme schemes in a lot of the same songs. I definitely appreciate your passion for wanting to learn and understand the art of rap, but unless you've grown up with it, it can be overwhelming. Plus, it's such a complex and dynamic art form that relies on the music/tempo/BPM etc and the flow/cadence/rhyme structure all aligning perfectly in order for the lyrics to make sense and follow the rhyme patterns set by the aforementioned beats and rhyme structure. It's just a lot to take in all at once. Anyway, I apologize for the rambling comment, but I appreciate what you're doing, and was just hoping to help. :)

    Alright...I know these responses are a year or so late but i really do enjoy your reactions and being able to share such (I wouldn't say pointless but more like useable at certain times) knowledge to someone whos willing to listen is a really great feeling. This is Not Alike off Em's Kamikaze album where he pretty much puts the entire world on notice again that although Em may have matured and lessened his anger he still can be the meanest and pettiest person alive lol. Royce...Royce is one of Ems best friends/ rival. In a competitive way. Em is always trying to outdo him in raps just the same way Royce is. They've been friends since probably 98 when Em dropped his Slim Shady LP album. A song named Bad Meets Evil is on it and thats Em introducing Royce to the world since Em had that playform. Back in those days Em was one of the kings of the underground rap scene and he was always finding ways to give other underground rappers their spotlight. Fast forward to 2010 and Em did an entire album with Royce called Bad Meets Evil the sequel. Now in this song Em obviously is saying he and MGK are not alike and Royce is saying that he and modern rappers of today are not alike. Capri Style and Mya G are very feminine looking pants that modern rappers and youngsters are wearing. They are unisex but the fact that they are so flamboyant looking makes Royce wonder how these guys fit in them lol a clever way of saying he doesnt wear skinny jeans. However its also a double entendre because Mya G and Capri Styles are also porn stars that Royce finds attractive to the point of shouting them out on a song so hes confused on how to do both while other rappers are confused trying to rap the way he does lol. He also says rappers are more concerned with drinks inside Styrofoam cups and being on drugs at the same time. Whereas hes more into doubling up his commas or making money off of his career as a rapper. That's Royce's perspective on the song. Finally he ends his verse by saying that Royce is good enough to be King of the rap game where as the modern rappers are barely fit to fit into Prince's pants. Yes the singer from the 80s. He's saying they are as fruity looking as Prince was lol. Hope that helps.

    For many fans, Rocye was introduced when Bad Meets Evil was released. But much of what you are experiencing started 20+ years ago, when Dre and Em hooked up. Best advice I can give, start from Em's beginning and react up that chain, because starting here is more face value appreciation versus career appreciation. :)
    Also, watch the Sway / Eminem interview, that helps clear up a bit more of the MGK ordeal. But EM sent that boy to a different music genre altogether and still ja rules him in a lot of his new music. :)
