First total war experience was Rome, in 2004. I was 10. I played it for 4-5 months. But I was very young and didn't understand too much.
Didn't play it for 10 years. But in 2014 I was diagnosed with cancer. I was being treated for 6 months. At the end of it, I was so worn down that I couldn't even walk. And my back hurt so much I was only able to sleep for 4 hours a day. I started watching Rome on HBO, and I just thought.. hey.. I'm gonna do what Caesar did. March on Rome and become emperor. I'm not exaggerating here, I played that game for 18 hours a day!

First time I played Rome Total War was a mess. Didn't know what I was doing but fell in love with the big RTS battles. Really like the empire management and city building in Rome Total War and medieval 2, much more so than the later Total Wars.

+Gustav Vasa Exactly same, i keep coming back to MTW2 and RTW currently got 10 campaigns running. But the new ones..despite all their DLC and new stuff. Its like so exhausting forcing yourself to play them while trying to force yourself to love them because "rome 2 right?". I like rome 2 in its own very unique way, kind of forgetting rome 1 as it makes it easier, as rome 2 does certainly have a unique mysterious tmosphere, but the city buildning system, (which is unique and kind of fun but wayyyy less than rome 1´s) and the no garrison armies just sucks. RTW and MTW2 are just the moist fantastic games of the total war games. The city buildning and empire feel was so real compared to the unique icons for rome 2. They´re cool in some ways but compared to mtw2 and rtw, nothing compares. Love the buildning system and i loved reading about the buildnings, units ive read it hudnreds of times its just so fascinating rather than being sent to a weird a encyclopedia. Really takes out the atmosphere compared to a scroll running down and hearing the sounds of the buildnings, horses etc. That attanetion to detail, you could see buildnings being built, ships on the horizon. If only rome 2 had that attention to detail. Altho if they had jsut improved trw some people would had complained about same old game but better graphics and graphics mean shit. And if they make a new one they also get shit, but theres a balance to everything. I.e family trees dont fix whats not broken.

My first experience with Rome total war was not playing it, but watching it on a TV show called time commanders. I fell in love with the idea of commanding ancient armies, and wished they made the game public (not aware it was at the time) when i found out i could play on pc, i begged my parents , was a young kid, till i got a pc to play it.
A week later i had strict time schedule as i didn't leave my pc for anything other than food and rest.

The 2003 BBC TV series Time Commanders where they used a modified Rome 1 engine. Five years later I had a PC I could finally play it. It was different after playing Shogun 1. After winning as Scipii to unlock the factions and then playing as Parthia with horse archers was a total revelation :)

I remember playing the Spartan:Total Warrior spin off on my ps2 as a child and loving it. I then heard of this "Rome: Total War" and had to have it, I remember playing the game , probably less than 20fps on my parents shitty laptop. Still loved every minute of it. Then one day there was a Medieval II:Total War ad on the tv and I genuinely remember almost pissing my self with joy when my father told me to turn around holding a copy of it in his hands.

I remember reading about Rome in PC Powerplay, I was so excited to play it as I loved Shogun and Medieval. Once I got the demo I must have played the River Trebia battle 100s of times until I got the game on release. No other total war game has ever made me feel so excited while playing. It's hands down my favourite game of all time.

My first experience with rome1..... I was at a mates house playing cossacks something or other i cant remember which one, and he had just picked up a new fangled game called rome total war, neither of us had heard of it but once he started it up i knew it was a winner, i would look over every couple of minutes just so blown away with how epic it was, and how great it looked, so for the rest of the night i ended up just watching him play, my game was completely ignored and the next day i went and picked myself up a copy and ive been in love with the series ever since.

First time i came in contact with rtw was watching a friend play it at his house when i was 14. I was more into shooters and gta at this time and only rediscovered it 6 years later. Started a scipii campaign on medium difficulty and my pc crashed at almost every battle. i wanted to finish the campaign so Bad, forcing me to build up a ridiculous amount of full stacks in order to win battles with auto resolve. Fought egypt in anatolia for like 80 turns, those were some massive (auto resolve) battles. 10/10 would do again.

  • @TheWalklingPractice
    @TheWalklingPractice 8 років тому +1

I first played total war around a friends house. He showed me all the factions in the grand campaign and I was in absolute awe, playing a scipii campaign and buying the game a week later. After I came back from Greece in 2005, I got addicted to the game, it also propelled my interest in history and has had a profound impact on my hobbies.
One of the greatest games ever created. Revolutionary in it's field.

Two year old video, but who cares.
I actually just got into TW a couple of years ago, and decided to play it on a whim since I remember Rome 1 getting good reviews.
What completely hooked me was the first city battle in the prologue campaign. I was going along mostly doing as the tutorial prompts said, until I was throwing my hastati against some hoplites and my general was in position to attack from behind so I sent him in. The only RTS games I'd been into until then had been SC 1 & 2 so I was totally expecting the hoplites to pull some magic armor bonus against cavalry right out their ass and kill my general. It blew my mind when the adviser chimed in and told me my intuitions were correct. It was the least video gamey thing to happen a video game and completely rekindled my interest in video games in general.

I bought Rome with Barbarian invasion at the same time. I think I jumped straight into the Hun campaign. I sacked the rebel settlement that was in the horde's starting region. I then went South to fight the Roxolani. I decided to occupy that settlement (I was still confused as to how hordes worked). Then I decided to wipe out the Roxolani horde armies. I lost many generals doing this and I think one or two of their generals escaped. I remember how in the battles I was concerned that runaway slave spearmen would kill my general by virtue of being armed with spears.

The first campaign I ever did in Rome 1 was actually the Brutii. I remember how much I struggled vs macedonia, because I didn't know how to deal with the hoplites efficiently. It took me ages to get to thessalonica and finish them off... And here I see you doing it on one of the first few turns. Bittersweet feeling to say the least

My first experience of Rome was watching my buddy play the Juli campaign and what a laugh we would have. Getting fucked up and playing all night, the family tree was great seeing weather the sons would turn out heroes or gob shites. I eventually got my own computer and played Rome so much I had to break the cd to give myself a break. I now find myself watching you after coming across you in the peasant challenge. Your playing the best game I ever came across and it's very enjoyable to watch you until I get a computer again. Your moving along fucking nicely.

My first experience with Rome Total War was when i was 13, got it with a games magazine. I remember playing as the Giulii Family, my favorite since i learned at school the history of Rome for the first time (i'm italian, so a bit of roman proud told me to play Caesar lel). For me it was fucking amazing: the atmosphere, all those troops, thousands of troops fighting in open fields or cityes, the campaing map, the fucking music and the general speeches was absolutly mind blowing and gave me a lot of chills back then, because i'm a stupid epic guy and love this kind of things.
Was also the first time i started to find files on the internet such as patches and bux fixes (like the 261 b.c. bug, really fucking annoying).
It is so important for me that even now, after all these years (i'm 24 now) i recommend this game to everyone, even if some mechanics are clunky as hell.
Rome Total War is certainly one of my top 3 games i've ever played; the feels that this game gave me will be unique and urepeatable.
Too bad CA but expecially SEGA ruined everything over the years... (my ass still burn for the delusional Rome 2)

Started playing Shogun 1 total war when I was about 5 or 6. I remember it being insanely difficult, and it still is in my opinion. I was actually a little bit disappointed that they removed the province-by-province, end of turn movement system. It made joint attacks and 3-way battles show up way more often.

my first experience with Rome TW was at 10 years old watching my friends older other playing it. Me and my friend would just play the custom battles with 1 full stack of peasants VS 1 full stack of archers and just watch them get mowed down with flaming shot.... wasn't until I got the game myself a few years later that I played the campaign & is the game that got me into RTS and the whole TW franchise. Very nostalgic to watch these!

My first experience with Rome: Total War was a mix of disgust and enjoyment. Until that point I had only ever played Shogun 1, which had many less aspects to it. I was thrown into a world of empire management, turn-by-turn income, and unit upkeep. I was only around 11 and totally lost due to my inexperience managing taxes and not used to not being able to build infinite armies. I was perpetually broke, didn't trade at all, and barely expanded due to small armies. I remember being awe-struck by the truly 3D battles, but hated everything else. So I went back to Shogun. I came back a couple years later when I was more experienced with life and money, and Rome 1 instantly eclipsed Shogun as my favorite, and holds that title still today.

I had heard all the buzz around it on the internet with the 10/10 reviews, and since it was one year after the LotR trilogy you can bet 14 year old me was hyped to get it. I was all about ancient/medieval war. I paid for the game myself. I didn't have my own computer so I could only play it every other weekend when I was visiting my dad. I guess that's when I started staying up until 5am, playing all night. Best gaming memories I have. Good times :')

First experience was a custom battle. The Britons vs The Scipii in a siege attack. I really had no idea what I was doing, so I pretty much got nothing but the units I thought looked cool. It's my favorite in the series as well. 1) Rome1 2) Med 2 3) Shogun 2. I only put Rome 1 above Med 2, because of the time period. There pretty equal for me personally

@LegendofTotalWar With the slave thing, slaves are sent to those cities of yours with governors first of, then proportionally among your factions. Your capital is growing he fastest because you left a family member as a governor. Switching governors around before enslaving will switch up which provinces receive the growth.

First experience was in 2006. I was 9 years old at the time. I played the Julii and conquered Patavium, Segesta and Mediolanium and then thought to myself: "You know what? That's a fine empire I built." and then spend the next 100 or so turns turtelling and making my 'fine empire' prosper. Full built cities and an army to defend it. Then I looked at the map and realized that the brutii had conquered all of Eastern Europe and the Scipii were approaching Egypt, who had conquered all of Turkey, the middle east and parts of Scythia. The Scipii destroyed Egypt and usurped their entire kingdom. I was the one who ended up taking Rome and I quickly took Western Europe. I was by far the smallest Roman faction and was heavily intimidated by the other two so I ended up starting over.

I got Rome: Total War the Christmas the year it came out. Before that, I had Medieval: Total War on a computer that couldn't run it properly (battle maps were all white terrain and units were grey boxes). Literally Christmas Eve my mum got a new computer (family computer, I was only a kid) that was capable of playing MTW. The next day I found out, to my delight, that it could also play RTW. This was my first try. Second time i started conquering without fear, not caring about economy, just keeping recruiting Hastatii and fighting Gauls, then Spain... then my PC broke. :(

I actually played Medieval 2 first but once I found out Rome Total War was the game that came before it I went out and bought it, then I played the game for hours. I think my first playthrough was as the Julii and it was relatively easy since the Romans are OP as fuck in that game, but after I unlocked all the factions I played as Britons all the time. Gotta love those head hurlers. Medieval 2 and Rome 1 are still the best total war games. Attila doesn't even come close to the quality of those games, ESPECIALLY when you considered the age differences.

I saw a friend playing it at his house, back then I thought that it was a
lame game and that nobody needed it with other games that I thought
were better than it around. A few weeks later I saw him playing it again
and so did my mum who asked what the game was called, the friend told
her that it was called 'Rome Total War', she then asked us if we wanted
it. I was unsure but my brother said a clear YES!! So a few days later
mum ordered it and we started playing it. I did not understand how it
worked, but I soon did and it turned into my favorite game.
Unfortunately, the game put pressure on my PC so my dad had to remove it
and I did not get it back till we got a new PC about 8 months later. I
then on played it for almost a year but then we upgraded our PC to
Windows 10 which was not compatible with the disc version of Rome total
war. So around 8-9 months later a friend introduced us to Steam. So we
got the Steam version of the game and have had no problems ever since.

Hey Legend, did you know that of you recruit peasant's in 1 town then move em to your main roman cities and disband them there will actually add the 240 men to the population of said town's, might be a nice little boost to get them to grow big fast.

I played this massive battle as Julie against Gual where a couple hasati units held up their whole army along a front while my general and Equites crushed their generals in hammer and avails and came back just in time to charge the rear of the pathetic barbarians who then fled en mass from my Roman Legion and chased them down to the MAN!!!!!!! Also loved how i was trying to appease the people and seante and trying to maintain their relations as I got Stronger and the higher my leaders got the less the heard the cries from the PLEBS!

My first experience was with Rome Total War not so long agoa ctually. I remember I was in a RTS boom and was looking for good ones to play and I kept hearing about this game where you were actually in control of an army with moral and stuff. I was like "man, that sounds amazing but complicated". When I finally get my hand on it, I was really impressed but didn't understand shit as how to manage my economy. Was usually broke very quicly ^^
Quick question: when talking a settlement, how important is it to destroy the buildings from another culture and replace thme with yours for public order? (besides the temples obviously)

P.S. Legend you are really really really too good. Its not that fun to watch someone always win. Could you maybe loss sometimes? If its not so much to ask for

  • @AI-cp1jg

Legend, I have 2 questions . Why do you keep the depleted mercenary units? When you do keep them does the upkeep still cost the same as a full strength unit?

    • @LegendofTotalWar
      @LegendofTotalWar  8 років тому +2

+Sven Guli If the unit is depleted you pay it less proportionate to the amount of men lost. so if a 100 man unit that cost 100 in upkeep lost 50 men you'd only pay it 50 per turn. Super depleted units with like 1-6 men left are really good for leaving behind in forts because of the low upkeep. You need to leave a unit in a fort or else the fort gets dismantled. Forts are great when placed on river crossings or mountains as it significantly delays an invasion.

+Grenade Guy w/ Desk Fan Sort of. I have 4 cores but I'm still running windows vista. One of the main reasons I'm running on such an old operating system is because of Rome 1 and Medieval 2, which are my favourite games. However I am upgrading to windows 10 for total war warhammer.

+LegendofTotalWar Not sure if you already know, but there was/is a directx12 conflict with Rome Total War 1; windows 10 runs directx12, and I'm pretty sure you couldn't downgrade to directx11 running windows 10. I fixed this by manually turning off Anti-aliasing for Rome 1 in the preferences ini script. Not your problem now, but may be later

I thought cities only get a population boost from enslavement if they have a family member in the settlement acting as governor when the conquered city is enslaved?
I managed to get perfect scores with the People and Senate at the same time as well once. Had to bend over backwards to fulfill all the Senate missions and owned just enough territory to make me popular with the People but not too popular to piss off the Senate (also not shocked you didn't get any offices, the SPRQ faction tends to hog them early game)
Come on Scipii, get it in gear already! My favorite Roman faction is looking like a big chump at the moment

    • @OldTotalWarrior
      @OldTotalWarrior 8 років тому

+kd3045 Also, if there are no family members in any city the slaves are divided equally among all your cities. And for the Romans half the slaves go to Rome.Don't confuse the slaves that are sent to cities with the increase in population growth rate (the manacled feet icons) from enslaving cities.
