Pretty much everything outside of princesses and 3d stuff is massively underappreciated. Hunch back of Notre dame is a masterpiece of animation, the story grips you, its approachable for all ages. Sword and the stone, might be cheaply animated and reused audio clips, but still has way more heart and effort put in it than anything in the last 20 years. Even their cheapest animated film robin hood stands the test of time better than frozen or moanna.
This gem was unfortunately made in the Disney dark age preceding Walt Disneys death, a time when their animated movies were overlooked, thanks to this movie and the little mermaid the Disney reinnasance started and some of the other great movies were made!
It actually did good business, but was a bit outclassed by Bluth’s “The Land Before Time. And then Disney put out “The Little Mermaid,” and this faded into the background.
The amount of details/nuances in the drawings back then was incredible. Most of today animation looks poor compared to those paintings. There were already some 3D elements (cars) but they are treated as characters so it's not so abrupt visually
Well since this movie was based off of Oliver Twist, their relationship is reminiscent of Nancy being a mother figure to Oliver. And Rita protecting the kitten from Roscoe was also a callback to Nancy saving Oliver from getting a beating from Bill Sikes.
This is such a perfect tribute to the full version of Streets of Gold. Wonderful job! The fact that it was uploaded so long ago (came out when i was baby, actually) is making this gold!
Oliver & Company was amazing. A great story based on a greater story, and it worked well with a star studded cast even before Little Mermaid was released. The Great Mouse Detective, (another great story created in a similar vein) had Vincent Price, but Oliver & Company had Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Dom DeLuise, Roscoe Lee Browne, Cheech Marin, and then Ruth Pointer recording one of the songs. Both films came out as Wells, Eisner, Katzenberg, Menken, and Ashman were building what would be known as the renaissance of Disney animation, and it's amazing to see that they put that much faith in a film pre-Mermaid.
I actually saw both GMD and O&C when they first came out in the 80s when i was 4 31 years ago (saw GMD 3 times in theaters when i lived in St Louis and had a stuffed Basil and a readalong with cassette) an d O&C (3 times in theaters even after New Year's day) at age 6 at the movies when i lived in Omaha nearly 30 years ago and i had some O&C merchandise like a couple of shirts, stuffed Oliver from Sears, readalong with cassette, junior novel, CD Soundtrack from Santa (my first CD), glass with Oliver and Dodger, Mcdonald singing ornuments for the trees every christmas and Mcdonald toys. I also saw Little Mermaid 2 times in theaters at age 7 and had Mcdonald toys. Cool eh? although i remembered wanting both GMD and O&C on video as a kid but was pissed off they didn't, however i also did saw GMD when it was re-issued 25 years ago in theaters when i was 9 going on 10 3 times even on a field trip with classmates in Albuquerque and got the movie on video for christmas at 10. I even saw O&C when it was reissued when i was 14 as i remembered in middle school that my friends saw the TV spots and we shared our memories of seeing the movie when it first came out when we were little and also being pissed off how it never came to video over the years, i even got the movie on VHS when it finally came out 21 years ago for Christmas. I enjoy both movies for nostalgia you know to more simpler times and GMD is number 11 on my top 20 favorite Disney animated movies with O&C 14.
ikr! This used to be one of my favorite movies when I was a kid! I loved Rita, she's my favorite dog in this movie, because she has so much spunk and she's pretty as she is X3
Great movie I saw in theaters 3 times when it came out when I was 6 and I had stuff from McDonald’s toys, soundtrack, t shirt, stuffed oliver, coloring books, readalong and that kind of stuff. It took a hell of a long time from 88 to 96 to get to video, I remember at 7 being disappointed that it never came to video and I had to wait years. I also saw the reissue in middle school with my friends who too remember seeing it in theaters as younger ones and I got the movie on video for Christmas at 14 after years of waiting and I own it on blu. Underrated classic
Me too! And I'm not usually scared of Disney villains like that. After all, I enjoyed watching Scar and his hyenas event if i didn't particularly like him back then.
This song is catchy. I admit that when I think off Disney films I usually forget that this movie is one. I think it's time that I gave it another chance.
I remember I had two choices at the theater see this movie…or see the land before Time. Though I did pick land before time I did so under the pretense that I would see this movie on VHS which really never seem to happen it’s one of those Disney products that kind of got swept under the rug just like with the black cauldron. It took like years for this film to finally get distributed by Disney. So it’s funny that I could’ve saw it back when I was eight and didn’t really see it till I was almost 17.
I know, right? I miss the old Disney too. I'm sorry, nowadays, in my book... They've just gone downhill. This was when I loved them, and felt like I could still dream... Or when I was still excited about going to Disneyland. They've just... changed too much and not really in a good way. Long live the older, awesome stuff like this.
This song is very true I've being in the gutter myself when i was 19 when my dad died and had nobody and it's HARD. You deffo have to learn to carry yourself or you won't survive on your own. Brilliant song love it x
I've heard some voice actors asked this question at conventions. Apparently having to sing AND voice act (and go through a lot of takes to get it right) will absolutely ROAST your vocal cords. That, and sometimes it's cheaper to pay a singer for a one-off than to pay an actor overtime.
+Miguel Cuervo Well, Billy Joel did it. But he's also an artist first. I imagine that Disney just wanted big names for their contemporary soundtrack and Sheryl's wasn't big enough.
This really is an underrated movie! It's a good one without comparing it to the source material. I really wish Disney would shine light on this movie, as it deserves it. Maybe make it live action? That would be great!😄
These older Disney movies are such classics... they inspire me so much... I love drawing... and when I turn 20... I want to go to Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario to take the animation course in which many Disney and Dremawork animators are recruited... I plan on bringing these kind of movies back...
I used to say "Check it out man" all the time when I was little thanks to Tito..... lol, I haven't seen this movie in ages. I NEED to watch it again soon!
That’s what I thought too I listened to the Disney storyteller audio cassette and they played it longer It baffles me they cut the song so short in the actual movie Grrrr
If they ever made a tv show off this movie showing their shenanigans and then the bad guys does something and then the all team up and stop him and then it starts all over again in the the next episode. This video would be the opening to introduce the characters.
This is the most underrated Disney Film of all time.
Skynetz But it's the good one afterall.
Dont forget Great Mouse Detective, Fox and the Hound, Sword in The Stone, Aristocats, Hunchback, Mulan and Emperor's New Groove which are underrated
Johnlindsey289 but mulan is a very popular film
Skynetz brother bear
Sally Carrera oh never mind that, replace Mulan with Atlantis.
Looking back at this, Oliver & Company really got the spirit of pre-9/11 New York. Very underrated movie.
I’m sad to hear NYC was difficult pre 9/11.
I was born and grew up in NYC from 1995 - now
I dont really remember a pre 9/11 NYC
Yeah! ...this movie was the life of New York in the 80s! ...it makes me so happy to say, this was my birthplace🌉
@@Crayolapup
Well, difficult in what way?
Very well said. Put it right into words.
Dude, that 80's vibe is still alive and going with godspeed
Yup! born 1982 and the late 80s and early 90s was a fantastic time to be a kid and was a teen of the late 90s, i miss those days
This is, without a doubt, one of the most underrated Disney films, probably ever. I loved this movie growing up. :)
Joey S in total agreement.
Right up there with Treasure Planet.
OLIVER AND COMPANY IS AWESOME NO MATTER WHAT
Story 5/10 animation 10/10 characters 10/10 songs 6/10 overall 8/10

30 years old and still as great as ever this is definitely one of Disney's best movies I dont care what you tell me.
It's a good movie. And the music is simply excellent!
the fact that this song and “perfect isn’t easy” aren’t on apple music is a crime against millennials.
Lol thats on you for using garbage apps
Ruth Pointer was just on masked singer last year. So underrated as a singer!!!
Really? 😀
I'm 62 and have this on vhs and cassette, took my kids to the theater to watch. Love Oliver and Rita
RITA IS AWESOME
Not sure if anyone caught this, but that's Leland Sklar on bass, Russ Kunkel on drums and Dean Parks on guitar. LEGENDS!!!
Can't believe I watched this video 15 years ago. Feels like a whole other world now lookin' back.
1 of Disney's most UNDERRATED classics.
Bette Midler, Billy Joel and Ruth Pointer this is like an 80's kid dream musical. How was it so underrated?
This gem was unfortunately made in the Disney dark age preceding Walt Disneys death, a time when their animated movies were overlooked, thanks to this movie and the little mermaid the Disney reinnasance started and some of the other great movies were made!
It actually did good business, but was a bit outclassed by Bluth’s “The Land Before Time. And then Disney put out “The Little Mermaid,” and this faded into the background.
One of the most underrated movies in my opinion. The other is The Great Mouse Detective.
Hunch back. Every frame of that movie could be put in the Louvre
@garfoonga1 and Esmeralda is the most beautiful Disney's heroin.
Whoever that light brown dog is who has dark brown human-like hair, MAN she looks fine! Something about this art style just gets to me.
Rockin' Fox AJ
What a pretty name!
Rita?
I miss Disney when it was like this.. beautiful art and music
As well as passion and ingenuity.
I really underrated this movie, but ever since I watched it a month ago I am OBSESSED with it! It is so amazing!
1988: streets of gold
2013: streets of mold

Sadly true....
2020-2021: Streets of Covid and cold.

I never get tired of this song

deputyseal409 no one does it’s so 80’s and So Disney
I used to watch this movie a lot. I love all the songs in this movie.
Me neither!! *bobbing head, sings along with a gleeful grin*
Odd how it never gets any airplay on Disney Channel.
I absolutely love Ruth Pointer voice.. it matches perfectly Rita's style... this song is amazing.. I imagine myself singing this in a musical.. :)
The amount of details/nuances in the drawings back then was incredible. Most of today animation looks poor compared to those paintings. There were already some 3D elements (cars) but they are treated as characters so it's not so abrupt visually
I remember when my parents gave me this movie on a video tape in 1998. Still love it, and it's been 16 yrs since
My dad made me grow up on watching the old Disney movies and I still watch them time to time still love the old movies
Yep. Not the new ones they suck not all of them but most of them are crap. Like wish 🤮🤢
To me this is one of the newer movies. Perspective is weird
Most underrated animated Disney movie EVERR!!!
HAPPY 34TH BIRTHDAY TO OLIVER AND COMPANY
I'm 32 now
I think it’s cute how Rita take little Oliver under her wing.
Well since this movie was based off of Oliver Twist, their relationship is reminiscent of Nancy being a mother figure to Oliver. And Rita protecting the kitten from Roscoe was also a callback to Nancy saving Oliver from getting a beating from Bill Sikes.
@@jasonvazquez8652 YES
Thankfully, Rita had a happier ending than Nancy…
@@magicaltour1 Agreed.
It's ABSOLUTELY AWESOME, I consider Rita as Oliver's adoptive Mom
I never knew Billy Joel, Joey Lawrence and Bette Midler were voices in this movie. This is such a great 80's song 😺
nothing better than jamming out to this song at two am xD
It's too good to be lost to the history of old Disney movies;)
This is such a perfect tribute to the full version of Streets of Gold. Wonderful job! The fact that it was uploaded so long ago (came out when i was baby, actually) is making this gold!
By the way everyone I have rediscovered the lost 1985 version of the Disney logo from France. It’s in my channel
This song is amazing! I don't even have to watch Oliver and Company in order to cry over it lolol
My favorite Oliver song
I'm 19, my sister's 15 and we still sing along to this movie. Can't beat the classics. :)
I LOVE the scenery animation in this movie! Very similar to "the Iron Giant."
Brad Bird studied at a school started by Walt and staffed by some of his animators. I wonder how many CalArts alumni were assigned to this film.
they don't make Disney sings with the same soul anymore. I mean you can FEEL the soul in this one
This is forever my jam!!!
Isaiah Saulsberry Mine too

I love Ruth Pointer- but Sheryl Lee Ralph- Rita's voice- is a tony nominated singer and actress and she totally could have sung this
Whoa, I didn't knew that, now I will always wonder how this song could sound with Sheryl's voice.
Why DIDN'T they create this song with Sheryl's voice provided?
I didn't even know who sung this, thanks!
