I came here from the video of their first TV appearance in '78. You can feel three years of dedication and live bar gigs on the band at this point. They even perform here like a bar gig.
I remember my mother tuning into “The Mighty 690” radio station in her car (it was an 1974 Chevrolet Vega) and sooo many awesome songs would come on; especially this one…. I was 6 or 7 years old; I loved it then and I still love it now!
I think this was made into video and had heavy rotation during early MTV days. I was mesmerized by the song and the band. Bono was starting to own the stage here!
Now they got it. Energy, unique sound, driving rhythm section, changes in dynamics, words that make you wonder what the hell it's about. The echo box put them over the top. Not hard to see why they exploded.
I remember this song like it was yesterday, the first time I heard this song was at a Dance club in Brampton Ontario in the fall of 1980 and I went ape shit - I called CFNY The Edge radio and asked Live Earl Jive to play it the next day and had all of my College classmates listen - we all went ape shit . I've been a huge U2 fan ever since. footnote; I named my son Josh after the Joshua Tree album and the dude in the bible.
I grew up just down the road, in Hamilton, and heard "I Will Follow" for the first time at "The Downstairs John", the main bar for undergrads at McMaster University (I was in first year of the BSc program there). The New Wave & Punk scenes in Toronto & our cities had been really cooking since the mid/late 70s, and - yes - CFNY was already playing great music....but there was something unique & very authentic about U2's sound, and I remember having a very similar reaction when I first heard them. 👍👍😎
What a great time to be alive! For those old enough to remember the movie, "The last American virgin" you'd know this was playing at the part where Gary was gathering money for Karen's little mishap! This was the beginning of the greatest decade!

That’s what makes a great performer. Dave Matthews was asked who he liked playing for better, 50,000 people or 50 and he said it doesn’t matter as long as there is 1 person who wants to hear what you play.
@Little Kobold - Yeah, as a fan of both U2 and Echo and the Bunnymen, with the later being my favourite band I can honestly say that there is not a single track in the Bunnymen's entire catalogue that sounds anything like I Will Follow, or any other U2 track for the matter. Ridiculous idea.
When they hit LA they played the Santa Monica Civic...I was one of the first people in line.. Great concert ands have always been a fan. The place was 3/4 full at best... Anyone else there too? Maybe 1979/80?
This video was Feb, '81. Their first U.S. tour was a couple of months before this in Dec, '80. May have been around then. I saw them on their War tour in '83 and there were still only about 1,000 - 1,500 people.

Early U2 is utterly baller. NO BS, no over serious posing, just great dance music.
I agree about early U2...but "dance"?? Seriously?
@@BradentonSlick U2 is dance music. The early 80s were all dance music. Prince, Billy Idol, Talking Heads, U2 . . . the list goes on and on. And I mean dance until you drop.
@@geinikan1kan I was 16 at the time. U2 was called "New Wave" ROCK by everyone. Dance music does not use all guitars, it is mainly keyboards. Same for Billy Idol and Talking Heads.
Ahhhh music from my 20's.....never coming back
Ahhhhh! This takes me back! Lord! I miss those times!
Such incredible talent so young. They’re babies💛🩵💛🩵
This guys sings so good, he can get nations to forgive other nations debt
Amazing, best band in the world
je me rappelle avoir écouté en boucle cette chanson dans le train qui allait de la gare d'austerlitz vers la charente maritime ....
en boucle en boucle ... et le paysage qui défilait et l'avenir devant moi ...
New Years Day got me, Ive seem them live twice. They are the best rock band on earth, still.
Does this song rock in 2024 as much as it did in 1981?
Song every changes... so yes!
U2 were one of those rarities that had a vision and never let the vision get cloudy from beginning. Amazing talent and drive.
The person who first introduced me to U2’s music back in 1982 predicted they would go on to become the world’s biggest band. I hope he put a few quid on that. I’ve got to admit i was sceptical.
I'm not a huge fan but it's remarkable they are all still together and killing it. Never seen these early vids before and it is so cool.
I'm a huge fan, how can you not after seeing this video...live???
I came here from the video of their first TV appearance in '78. You can feel three years of dedication and live bar gigs on the band at this point. They even perform here like a bar gig.
Adam Clayton bangin away on an Ibanez Musician... I have the same bass hanging on a wall in my basement. Great instrument.
wonderful performance! Rio de Janeiro, 2022
Past me: would never think watching this video October 4 2020 on my phone chilling in bed at age 49.
Me now: fuck I’m older but still love U2 !!!
I’m chillin and watching it on my phone in bed at 61. Still sounds amazing!
20/21 still the BIGGEST BAND ON EARTH
Not sure you could say that at this stage. But who cares really?
I remember my mother tuning into “The Mighty 690” radio station in her car (it was an 1974 Chevrolet Vega) and sooo many awesome songs would come on; especially this one…. I was 6 or 7 years old; I loved it then and I still love it now!
The Swedish audience is tearing the place apart!! I am surprised U2 didn't pack it in and never play again after that audience reaction
lol, they didn't know what to make of it. they were impressed though i think.
@@derekbaker3279 right on Derek, very cool and thanks for sharing this - a lot of us U2 fans out there, in our own backyards no less!
40 years ago, it's been a while...
I saw U2 in 1986, in Tucson Az. Then i left to the Army the next day... they went w me on all my missions n deployments...
One of the very few bands that are still together with the original line up and no conflicts! Rush is the ONLY other one that I can think of.
Umm...
Went from 1978 to not really knowing who they were to hey we found our sound what a difference . Its good to see how bands get better and grow
What a great time to be alive! For those old enough to remember the movie, "The last American virgin" you'd know this was playing at the part where Gary was gathering money for Karen's little mishap!
This was the beginning of the greatest decade!
haha, that movie was the first time i heard this song, and i was blown away by it, bought the album after that. i knew beforehand a u2 song was in the movie because it said on the cover (rental), but i didn't know which. memorable movie btw.
CON 20 AÑOS YA SONABAN SUPER BANDA. IMPRESIONANTE!
This song could be released in 2020
Not enough auto tune.
One of the greatest guitar licks ever.....
Are you serious bro?
@@peace6692 oh yeah.
Even on a small stage Bono performs like he is in a stadium
That’s what makes a great performer. Dave Matthews was asked who he liked playing for better, 50,000 people or 50 and he said it doesn’t matter as long as there is 1 person who wants to hear what you play.
Except that this is the studio recording.
@@hd-xc2lz So the whole introduction when Bono says where they're from is on the record?
@@hd-xc2lz If you think it's the album version and that they're lip syncing, get your ears checked. Absolutely live.
The Swedish Bingo players were surprised to hear the new band U2 during their half time break.
Sounds a lot like Echo & The Bunnymen. Parece muito com Echo & The Bunnymen.
Great point- I never made that connection but I think you're right
I could never have imagined it either, but this video gave me that impression. Hugs from Brazil !!!!
In 3 years ( since 1978 )they improved totally.
Such a different sound here. Very Echo and The Bunnymen-esque. The instrumentation is just so tight tho, maan that guitar.
Absolutely...... so similar with this song
@@scott7521 I am a PhD in comparative music. I did the telemetry and this performance scores an impressive 99 on the bunny-meter. ChrisK was right..
Como cerrar los ojos y verlos ahora mismo sonido.Geniales la voz de Bono mas joven lo único.
Excellent picture quality!
Singular and great voice and band.😊
God bless them.
(I Will follow).
These guys deserve every ounce of success this early raw music rocks and is cutting edge punkesque newwave
They sound so good live
Sounds suspiciously like my cd album version...hmmmmmm.
@@boke75 I think that only the voice is live
okay.......the audience is motionless, stunned by what they are witnessing... I can only imagine.
Considering how many bands started at the front end of New Wave music, they certainly set themselves apart and outlasted most of their contemporaries.
