  • Cuckoo was an Anglo-Indian dancer and actress in Indian cinema. She gained fame as the “rubber girl” of Hindi cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. Her exceptional dancing talent made cabaret dancing a staple in Bollywood films of that era. Cuckoo’s real name was confirmed to be Koyal Moray. Let’s take a look at some highlights from her career:
Early Career: Born during the late British Raj, Cuckoo made her screen debut in the film “Arab Ka Sitara” in 1946. Her dancing abilities caught the attention of directors and audiences in subsequent films. The turning point came with Mehboob Khan’s film “Anokhi Ada” (1948), where her dance number established her as the lead dancer of the era. In “Andaz” (1949), she showcased her acting skills alongside stars like Nargis, Dilip Kumar, and Raj Kapoor.
Later Life: Cuckoo remained the top dancer in Hindi films until other dancers like Helen and Vyjayanthimala entered the industry. She was known for helping unknown actors get their break in Bollywood. Cuckoo and Helen appeared together in song and dance sequences, such as in “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958) and “Yahudi” (1958). Her last film appearance was in “Mujhe Jeene Do” (1963). Unfortunately, she passed away from cancer in 1981 at the age of 53.
Cuckoo’s legacy as a dance icon continues to inspire generations of performers in Indian cinema. 🌟
This is my humble tribute to this wonderful dancer-actress of a bygone era.
