They also played it in the morning when the station would sign on at 6:00 a.m. I will come in and lay on the couch and have my Ovaltine and wake up to this great poem
As so many others have said this always takes me back in time when life was so much simpler, no cell phones, no computers, tv only 4 channels and needed outside antenna... great going back down that road of memories.
Oh how I remember this, my Mom and I would stay up late to watch a monster movie 🎥, drink a warm glass of milk 🥛 and it was bedtime. Life was so much simpler then. Drink your milk and go to bed now.
I miss the days when television would sign off for the night, and the whole world would go to sleep. Peace of mind just doesn’t seem obtainable any longer with 24 hour television programs on 150 different channels and commercials in your face everywhere you go.
One of our local television stations must have employed an executive with an Air Force connection. Not unusual, since the city was home to both Army and Air Force bases. Around 4:00 PM every day they would either show High Flight, or a commercial for the Air Force Nurse Corps ("You can even wear wings!"). It was mostly kids watching after-school programs, but I guess they made an impression, since I still remember them to this day.
I also vividly remember this sign-off in the 60 s my dad was also in the airforce soloed the PT-17 stearman 1943 retired in the F-100 Super Saber 23.5 years later 1963. Miss my dad been almost 22 years now. Love all things Airforce, tho myself 25 years Navy. Thank you for the memory!!!
Boy, really takes ya back to very different time. However, now that I’m old and don’t always sleep the norm, I’m very glad that I don’t have to hear it. 😅
This isn't the William Conrad version. Conrad did the narration in another sign-off rendition, but the guy we hear in this one definitely ISN'T William Conrad.
I remember listening to this late at night at the end of local channel broadcasting before cable, streaming, etc. came out, depending on which channel. Sometimes they would play "You'll Never Walk Alone" by The Lettermen or just play the National Anthem. Then I would fall asleep😴 or stay up watching screen snow😵💫
Ah yes the days when even TVland went to sleep at night. I actually had forgotten all about pre-24/7 TV and listening to static early Saturday, waiting for the test pattern and tone. Where's my cartoons? Where's my Wonderama!? Hurry! Because of this habit, I now recall, I once caught Metromedia (KTTV 11 Los Angeles, pre-Fox) on air, studio camera on before they ran their test - just a wee whoopsy of about 5 seconds maybe - no action/sound on set.
There was an earlier one used in the late 50's. Same words. I believe an f-86 sabre jet or something very similar was used. Does anyone remember that one? I would love to see it here on youtube.
So way back in the day, some cereal (or maybe it was another product) offered tiny grey polystyrene (or some kind of injected plastic molding) of various USAF aircraft including I believe the Bell X-1, the F86, 102 and 106 but as a kid my favorite was the F104, although at times I imagined being Chuck Yeager and dropping from a B29 and breaking the sound barrier, but that's another story. Just something about the design, the feel, the look. For several years I've searched antique toy shops, the internet, for some remembrance of these tiny toy aircraft. So far no luck. Anyone else remember these?
I wonder how in the World could Someone think that one day , a five year old would Understand and remember a fascinating poem such as this while at War, but apparently Someone did, I wonder Who / may 16, 2023. [God].

I remember staying up late when I was a kid in the 60s to watch the station signoffs. I always remembered this one.
So did I.
Me too
Exactly the same thing for me. That was the best part of having the t.v. - to me! Even hearing it/watching it now (at 75) gives me goosebumps.
As so many others have said this always takes me back in time when life was so much simpler, no cell phones, no computers, tv only 4 channels and needed outside antenna... great going back down that road of memories.

It’s in black and white, earning it even more vintage points.

Me too!!! We're better times back then
as a 60's kid, I always loved this sign-off
... just took a little time to figure it out

This was the other poem we had to memorize for school. The first one was In Flanders Fields.
I stayed up watched this poem every late night sign- off !
THIS, brings back memories!
Such a wonderful memory from my childhood. Love this.
I have loved this poem since I was a child !
At 75 I remember this in the morning just before Saturday programs. It`s entitled " A Pilot`s Prayer" written by a WW11 fighter pilot.
I'm of the same vintage. There was an earlier one used in the 50's that used an F86 sabre jet I believe. Remember that one?
Yup…that one took me back some years…Thanks for posting!
just been thinking about my childhood and that was one I just tryed to find couldn't remember but up up and with my hand I touched the face of God
This is when we felt safe.
Yes Tommy. My brother and I purposely would wait for this poem, before turning off the TV and going to bed.
Boy, really takes ya back to very different time. However, now that I’m old and don’t always sleep the norm, I’m very glad that I don’t have to hear it. 😅
So remember this and the narration.
A 1980s version of this featured an F-15 and was voiced by William Conrad.
The 60's was my time, grad- day June 9th, 1969, enlisted air force July 19th, 1969 !
I also enlisted AN- air navy, July 19th 1977 San diego,to Lakehurst new jersey, to Bremerton Washington, puget sound !
The William Conrad one is here ua-cam.com/video/macJ75iDuTA/v-deo.htmlsi=cXJFtDAzUNlpx45p
So who is the narrator in THIS one? It isn't Conrad but I like it best.
@@vincentsartain3061 Couldn't find out.
Wow...I haven't heard that in many, many years! What a cool memory!!
Wowww. No words. Thank you. Such a vivid childhood memory.
This poem is on nearly every skydiving club wall in the country, too. A classic.
Really? I've never seen it, but then again, I haven't gone to them all heh But that's still pretty cool!
I love the f-104
From British Spitfire to F104 the message, poem is still the same few have experienced it....
Back when America was great with an honorable military.
William Conrad (Voice) was a fighter pilot in WWII.
Indeed he was. Army Air Force. He flew the P-38 lightning.
This isn't the William Conrad version. Conrad did the narration in another sign-off rendition, but the guy we hear in this one definitely ISN'T William Conrad.
And actually I prefer this version over Conrad's.

❤❤ IT WAS A___**GREAT ⭐WHOLESOME AND ⭐WONDERFUL ERA..........
I guess this clip was also used by KABC-TV 7 Los Angeles.
Omg I remember this

Thia is much better than that Synth re-do that was done in the late seventies-early eighties!
Beautiful 🇺🇸
Mad Men season 2, Pete Campbell is getting busy on the couch with a random woman while this plays on the television.
I remember this well
Very very nice, thanks so much

I know what you mean. I want it all back.
I remember this. I always loved the F104. But still... Pentagon propaganda.
It still works. See: Top Gun Maverick.
It's only propaganda if it makes you believe something that is not true. I honestly don't understand what you're getting at here.
@@brianmunson5688 based on actual historical events, portraying the US as a sort of global guarantor of freedom is propaganda.
Sir, how can you say it is propaganda. Makes no sense at all.
