Dude mained the least original fighter in Brawl and somehow directed one of the most creative platform fighters. That's impressive.
Bro is one of a kind
Hadn't thought about it like that!
They made that character 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁
gotta love how Alpharad basically opens up dissing Dan
Bro. Every fighter in smash is creative original (?) and fun
@@ambiguous8661 It took over 25 years for Smash characters to get to the point that they are now where most of them are at least somewhat fun to play as or somewhat balanced, and there are still a ton of characters that are neither (Steve, Palutena, Mii Gunner, Mr. Game and Watch, etc.), and some who are just code clones of other characters (half the FE cast, Ganondorf and Captain Falcon, Falco and Fox, all 3 Links, Mario and Doctor Mario, Samus and Dark Samus). Rivals of Aether got to an even higher point than Smash in less than 5 years, with all of the characters being fun to play as and actually having varying playstyles and abilities, with movesets that mesh perfectly with each other and, for guest characters, even reference their original games, which for some reason Smash STILL can't do (why even bother adding Zelda and Kirby characters at this point). Smash characters are great nowadays, yes, but they're still not even close to the level that the characters made by Dan (a Sonic main of all people) are made at.
It’s good to see Alpharad in the video knowing how big rivals was for his channel earlier on when it was in beta, the release, and when workshop came out
Can't wait for Excalibur to be revealed
I haven't watched Alpharad in years, but he's the one who put Rivals on my radar all those years ago. It's cool to see that he is still invested in this series
He voices Zetterburn in Rivals 2 if I'm not wrong
And then proceeded to fully abandon the game like it never existed. As you can see, I’m not a fan of the guy at all.
😎
I’m loving how the story mode looks so far. I can’t wait to see who else is joining the roster. Wonder who the cast is.
Well I hope the guest characters from the first game will stay
@@sonicANDtailsfan157kThose are most likely to be cut lets be honest
@@illumililiumit'll probably be the original cast minus ori and SK
True, who's gonna take their places then, new characters original to Rivals of Aether or no one?
If Zolt and Master Cai get into the game, it's an instant GOTY
I'd already seen enough months ago to know that I want to support this game. No matter how much time it takes to develop, I believe so firmly in the quality of this team. This game's gonna be great
I hope that they still have the workshop functionality, and that the community keeps making all the great characters that they have in the past! I’m super excited to see this game and the future of the series!
im gonna be interested if this game will have such a big modding scene as the first one. making 3d models and new moves is definetly gonna be a big learning curve
Imagine we get the return of the brawl vault era? Im sure people could do it but the mods will prob come much slower than they currently are
Its definetely going to be a smaller modding scene but my theory is that its going to be much more polished at least hopefully, imagine ronald in 3d putting cheese on the ground and then running like a goofy to go hit hatsune miku or sum shi, would be wild
@@ΚρανίΩ i wanna see mordacai and rigby over wrastor and the racoon lol
Is 3d harder to make than 2d I would imagine that making sprites is more difficult than a 3d model but I might just be dumb
@@Watburnt making the model is (probably) harder but animating it after it's made is easier
drawing is (probably) easier but you have to draw every individual frame
The camera work for the game is amazing. I absolutely love the close-ups because it allows you to admire the details of the characters and makes it feel like a traditional fighter until it zooms out and makes it feel more than that.
you got me creating a kickstarter account just for this game. am immeasurably hyped
same lol
I don’t usually like to make statements like “this game is going to be the killer” but I do feel like this game is going to set a new standard for platform fighters. This was already one of my most anticipated 2024 releases when it was first announced, and it is only looking better and better.
I like that; "setting the standard" is accurate to what it's doing. Animation, VFX and SFX are easily a tier above both MV and NASB, at the cost of roster size. And with Rivals 1 design and balance experience under their belt, I have a ton of confidence in the team.
@@GammaFn.tbh even with the small roster, it’s basically at the amount that is actually played in most top fighting games. Melee for example ur mostly seeing what marth, fox, falco, puff, falcon, peach, and the occasionaly pikachu/yoshi/samus. I have faith that we’ll at least get to the 8 character goal which would be an amazing roster size
I just need clairen in, anything else is just a bonus
Surely she gets in right? She’s got a whole comic for Christ’s sake.
I just wanna play the funny stunny Jedi girl
@@GreetingsInferiors don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure the Rivals 1 base roster will all be playable. I doubt that includes the guest characters or workshop characters they added later though. If not, we’ll just have to wait and see if Workshop integration ever gets added.
@@xraenon1664 they’ll be playable at some point - but at launch there’ll only be a maximum of ten (assuming all current stretch goals are met)
I haven't been this excited for a platform fighter ever. No joke, even Smash never got me THIS hyped. I know this game will be something really special to me and hopefully to many others.
saaame
What does it do that Smash doesn't with unknown characters? Outside of wave dashing. Its so unoriginal.
@@sadworldwide Characters have their own mechanics which are far more interesting (Maypul's ledge special is a great example of something not present in Smash too and so is Wrastor's whole thing with the wind and aerial Smash attacks). Giving each character their own "thing" makes it far more interesting than even something like Cloud's Limit Gauge and the likes because you can actually see it in every move, not just specials. Smash is a crossover at the end of the day, and that's great and all, but this project shows just as much passion for both Smash and platform fighters in general. It's not just copying Smash while doing a sloppy job (like some others do), it's creating something original, and that's awesome to see. Also, not saying I hate Smash, I just found a platform fighter I enjoy more. That's it.
@@sadworldwideUnknown characters? ???…….
Ok doomer then just go back to your unbalanced garbage mess of a game with bottom-tier Ganondorfs and Little Macs where theyve never been properly buffed before. 💀 (Not hating on the game, as i do love the game myself, just showing off how annoying you are being for literally grabbing 1 of the only cool and unique mechanics its borrowed from it and ignoring all of the original rest while never even actually focusing on the great execution of it, it doesnt have to be original to be good, also look at pretty much basically any every other platform fighter out there, competitive or not that uses wavedashing other than maybe Brawlhalla and / or Fraymakers. 💀)
If you wanna be so stingy about it, at least try to provide some reasoning behind your clearly-biased opinion, otherwise itll just make you look like an ass.
@@sadworldwideSo just dont go and ruin the enjoyment of others if thats all youre going to do, because again…, it just makes you ends making you up to look like a dumbass and / or annoying idiot at best.
Also by your logic then every FPS game is unoriginal because you have to shoot guns just like in the very first original FPS ever did, lol, it doesnt have to be original to be good, it just needs to be really well-executed to be good tbh, kinda like Jujutsu Kaisen imguessing? Lol
The net code is super exciting. That's often the one thing that seriously hold great games back from being masterpieces.
Needs crossplay too.
Nice pfp
@@jamiecal11It obviously will have cross-play, as the first one already does and its now pretty much the standard for all fighting games if not games in general.
The 1st one has crossplay?@@SimoneBellomonte
Time to be the golden standard for platform fighters. The kickstarter started a bit ago and it's now met when I refreshed the page while typing out this comment god daymn.
I can't wait for this to be one of the big fighting games, because rivals 1 I felt already had better singleplayer content than most smash bros titles. You guys are amazing!
I like what I'm seeing, the mechanics, the presentation, full fledged story mode with VOICE ACTING!!!!
...sold
I have faith in rivals 2. There's no crunching and rushed visions when the studio making the game IS rivals of aether. Dan should be very proud of what he has created he has gone from replying to small joke posts about his game on twitter to the biggest indie platform fighter of all time in an extremely competive market. Absolute hats of and good luck, when I have the funds I will be supporting
Rivals was my first platform fighter when I was in middle school and now I get to experience that same feeling again in college thanks Dan and the whole team for making great games
The game looks amazing ! huge props to the team
As someone who’s played Rivals since the original came out, I’m very excited to see the progress being made on the sequel and I will gladly support you all in the development of this gem of a series! Keep up the good work!
This looks incredible! Its like platform fighter taken to the next level
I hope all the characters from rivals 1 are in it.
I want the moth
He already said they won’t be, at least at launch
They will be if the game does well Dan has said, so here's hoping! (Apart from SK and Ori obviously)
I hope the team is proud of what they've accomplished with Rivals 1, it still stands the test of time.
Soo excited and hyped for this game honestly. It’s definitely gonna be one of those platform fighter that can stand on its own. Especially with the whole look of the game.
Dang, only 3 hours and fans have already CLEARED the kickstarter goal
This looks so good!
Literally my only concern is that with 3d models instead of pixel art, mods will be harder and less to make so the workshop wont be as big. Still, with how good the game itself looks and the track record with the first game, I'm really not worried. As long as the game is fun, people will make mods.
That's also my main concern but I believe in the modders
Os bons Moders ainda iram querem fazer os Mods pro jogo, então aqueles que povoaram a WorkShop com personagens bons, interessantes e criativos certamente estarão presentes na WorkShop do Rivals 2.
I love Rivals of Aether so much. I'm so happy to see you guys succeeding!! Honestly the amount of talent at your studio and with everyone involved is insane.
Honestly, I like a lot of what I see/have heard. But I feel like the one mega-sized thing they avoided bringing up, was character workshop/ect. for the game like how RoA1 had. I'm sure the game will be great, but that one thing allowing countless player-made characters was almost a good part of the lifeblood that kept the game lasting for so long. And it'd be a bummer if it was left out of the sequel given it became a big thing many focused on or so on for so long.
Story MODE!! Good luck Aether Studios that looks very promising ❤
I hope they manage to keep workshop integration, I know it was a huge undertaking but it gave so much life to the last years of Rivals 1, I have huge hopes for this new game!
Workshop probably isn't happening. The amount of work one person would need to do for a workshop charatcer in this game is so much more than the first. And if there is Workshop, it won't happen until years later.
No. Workshop is honestly overrated and filled with memes and really crappy creations. I get it, it's fun, but I rather see proper characters than literally any of that.
@@FieryAnubis There are tons of extremely polished creations on the workshop, to the point where there's been numerous fanmade showcases for them. Every single workshop is gonna have crap of course since anyone can upload something, but the workshop for the first game isnt that bad at all.
@@FieryAnubisthat's why there are sets of polished characters, three of the characters in 1are workshop so obviously they have very high ceilings. The low floor high ceiling goes for all kidding scenes, it's just about how blind or lazy you are thh
@@FieryAnubislil bro hasn’t seen the rest of the workshop other than the memes
Alpharad, Void great to see these two amazing creators here!
This is so hype! Been playing the RoA off and on since 2015, and I hope RoA2 makes it big!
Got the Early Bird Special! I was gonna buy the game as soon as it came out, so it’s only right
Already pledged 75 dollars before watching but know that I know dan was a brawl sonic player I might have to take back my money
I'm hoping this game goes far, these guys are among the most best in the fighting game genre.
I'll miss the pixel art style for the game but I am very excited for this
Holy shit, I have no words. Nevermind, yes I do. I loved Rivals of Aether, but even if I never played Rivals in my life, this still looks huge for the genre. Ledge specials, pummel specials, the whole nine yards! The 3D art style looks positively beautiful. My only concern is mod support. It was super easy to mod ROA, and that ease of use created a huge modding scene. The whole reason I started playing was because of how robust the mod scene was. I really hope they carry over the same ease of use. Modding in 3D is infinitely harder than 2D, but hopefully they have some custom 2D flat template that people can work off of, like Game and Watch.
I already knew this game had my full support, rivals 1 is fantastic, but this makes me feel that even more. Fantastic job to everyone who worked on this
Never have I been faster to back a project! Looking forward to getting my hands on this!
I cannot wait to get my hands on this game in the coming months! I remember seeing the reveal way back when and seeing all the progress made throughout has been such a fun ride. I hope that you guys can reach your goal and I hope that I can help out a bit too once I can!!
with the new tournament hosting rules out for smash. I'm starting to truly believe that there is a smash killer out there, and it's name is Rivals of Aether 2
You got my full support. Rivals 1 is a master piece. Can´t even imagine how insane 3D Silvanos is gonna look
I can't wait for this game, looking totally amazing! Props to the whole team for this! :)
Wow, this game looks really good. It looks like everything I want out of a platform fighter and more. Your literally innovating the genre.
I think the problem here is that the original's longevity relied on how easy it was to mod in new characters, and shifting from 2d to 3d limits the scope of those modders.
EXACTLY
THEY ARE KILLING THEIR OWN GAME
@@SquidSushi123nah it's not gonna die. Mainly because competition is gonna at least double in size
I need more so much more information.
netcode features:
Rollback is great but, what's this about a server based system. I know the cannon brothers are doing that for the upcoming project L using riot's pre-existing server infrastructure. Will p2p still be available for direct connection? What about setting delay frames? What about instant rematch?
replay takeover?
Training mode features like frame advantage and hitboxes are already in rivals 1. so what about move properties? More in information on punishes, counter hits, combo validity displays? Save states and recording? SF6 frame meter ( probably not but, I would cry teirs of joy)?
Also important:
And what about monetization? Will it be F2P? you said their will be skins to subsidized development. What about DLC will characters be free like melty blood or purchased in a season structure like skullgirls? Is the milestone system coming back?
They're are also gameplay considerations but, that sort of stuff doesn't really matter at this point in development.
The mod scene makes rivals. I hope it's not too much trouble for modders to make the same magic happen again.
I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the art-style change, but that isn't going to stop me from buying the game because Rivals is incredibly fun and the gamefeel is really fantastic. Big ups for it so far, it's going to be a blast. (Where's my Orcane D: )
The sprites were harsh on my eyes and hard to see the characters facial expression which showed their personality more
@@Hinokami777 That's fair, if it causes actual issues like you said I understand completely. For me it's just a personal preference thing 🙂. Still getting it regardless.
Best wishes to the team! I loved Rivals 1 & can't wait to get my hands on this. Much love
yes YES I will give them MONEY for RIVALS OF AETHER 2 alright! YEAAAAAAAAAAAA
I think that this game will be the best platform fighter, the G.O.A.T of 2024
These are the reasons:
A lot of rapid fighting mechanics
How fast the gameplay is compared to smash
Incredible characters
Skins
Story mode
Incredible art style
I am incredibly hyped to see the full-game in action, especially after re-discovering RoA. I wonder if the latest four characters developed by the community will be seeing a comeback, Olympia's one of my favorites.
It saddens me to say that I can't support some of the decisions that the dev team took with the sequel of my favorite game. I understand that outsourcing the netcode to a server-based solution (like Trevor mentions at 3:05 ) reduces a lot of development cost when it comes to implementing rollback, but this choice has most likely sentenced rivals 2 to fail in smaller regions. Without p2p, this netcode implementation will almost surely limit the competitive scene of countries that don't have multiple top notch servers. For example a single server in Brazil won't do for the rest of South America (where routing and internet infrastructure in general is a complete joke on top of that). Plus, will Aether Studios be able to support these servers a few years in the future once sales have stagnated? Or will the servers shut down sending us back to rivals 1?
I want to trust Dan and Trevor's decision, but in my limited knowledge this is excluding some of us from the start.
As a fellow south american player, this worries me too. There's no way to make a server-based solution work in south america without making a lot of people in the region unhappy, since the connection between non-neighboring countries tends to be awful here. There's a reason why games like League of Legends have 3 separate server regions for south america. I would have to see the system in action here before I decide to support the game.
The lack of P2P also worries me for the future of the game, since there will be no way to play between us online if the servers ever shut down. The south american scene is also pretty much exclusively online, so the scene will definitely die if/when the servers are shut down.
Hey at least you weren't utterly fucked over like Xbox players. The game hasn't updated since 2019.
I cannot wait for this game
with how good nasb2 is over its original i actually cannot wait to see how the rivals sequel will be with all of the new gameplay features
hopefully we get the rest of the dungeon cast, slade in 3d would be so fire
The devs for NASB and Multiversus want their games to be “smash bros but better”. The devs for Rivals just want to make a cool and fun game. Also notice how smash bros is brought up in this video without it being obvious shade to create leverage. These guys definitely know what they’re doing.
This was a deeply shocking revelation. I am never trusting a bird EVER again.
I have seen gameplay of the first game but never played it. I think I'll give this a go and see how the pummel special mechanic works along with ledge special.
This and Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2 are looking to be the best modern platform fighters that aren't Smash Bros.
A couple notes:
1. To anyone who will say that Rivals 2 will be a vastly better game than Nick Brawl 2, I say both of these games will have their own strengths and both will be well worth playing for their own reasons.
2. For anyone who wants to bring up MultiVersus, we have yet to see how it'll look once it returns, but when it does I'm sure it'll be yet another great platform fighter to enjoy.
You said it
This is looking good!!! I can’t wait to play it next year, since the first Rival was really good and the visuals and appearance of Rivals 2 are amazing!!!
I can’t get over how amazing Kragg looks and sounds in this!
I swear, when they showed off the new story mode, I just shouted "OMG SUBSPACE EMISARY 2"
I was definitely scared to hear throws and shields were being implemented, but I'm sure the Aether team can do a good job with them!
praying Absa returns probably my favourite designed character in any fighting game ive played
Maypul gang
The character voices are unbelievably good
The character dialogue is written in sentences and has periods at the end of each, yet a question mark after a question.
I would really like to give all my money on this but I needed it to live so……I will give all my hopes on you guys, very fan of the first one so good luck.
Will eventually donate, but I highly reccommend you guys add some villain characters to your roster. Everyone being a good guy or super sympathetic person that lost there way is no fun! Where is Loxodont? Make him playable!
This is looking great! What I noticed is that this game has ledge hogging instead of ledge trumping, which I honestly prefer the latter much more. I've always thought edge hogging as quite anti-hype and anti-climactic. Also not a huge fan of chain grabbing which I notice this game has as well.
Unfortunately that's how a lot of platform fighters are, they just import mechanics from melee regardless of if they're fun or not
Hopefully, recovering with walljump like in rivals 1 will serve as enough counterplay for ledge hogging, but who knows
NGL the main appeal of the first game for me was the modding scene, but since now the sequel is in 3D I don't feel like modding is going to be as accessible, so I can't say I'm the most interested in this project.
I'm not too big on the 3D models. I was more of a fan of the pixelated looks, it was more easier to read
It was fugly imo, this is it.
We are a minority, apperently.
This game looks awesome, but the one thing that worries me is that the game now uses models instead of pixel art, meaning people might not want to mod this one.
I hope olympia and claire come to this game
Clairen was technically one of the first characters to have their model shown off. She's absolutely gonna get in.
@@GmNdWtchr96 oh yeah, i have forgotten that
Looks awesome! I love how original rivals of aether is and I can’t wait to see what they do with this new 3d environment!
I’ll try to pay for this.
Brother imagine the mods now in 3D 💀
Looks like it's done, reached in 2 hours
you know you need way more than 200k to finish the game lmfao, that's not nearly enough to pay for all your 25 devs for a year + the ones you want to hire
you set the goal so low to generate gaming news sensationalism, "this smash bros inspired game got funded in 24 hours!" in this case 2, so probably even juicier than you thought
respect the hustle, manipulating the media to your advantage is good
can't wait to see what you can do with the million or two you are getting from the kickstarter
please remember to be realistic and not overpromise
broken promises hurt more than the stretch goals feeling underwhelming
I remembered the esports in Multiversus, Smash players played, won, cashed-out then, went back to Smash 🤣
i love rivals 2, but the voice acting makes me die inside
kragg's va sounds like he was recorded on an iphone lol. hopefully the money goes to a recording session
Yeah, it's bad.
I hope Ori and Shovel Knight return they are so much fun
All of you lads at Aether Studios have all of our support. I myself might still be working on Workshop development for the first game, but it should at least help tide me over for when the possibility of Workshop compat for Rivals 2 rolls around.
looks dope. i like the fact theyre gonna fund with skins--works good for brawlhalla
cant wait played rivals 1 back in highschool a few years back and was really hooked then life happened so i cant wait to get back into it w Rivals2!
As long as you will still be able to have a fight between Ronald McDonald, Jack Skellington, and a floating bean can I'm happy.
Rivals of aether is actually what inspired my friends and I to design our own fighting using mugen as a base engine. So thank you for opening our eyes to how awesome platforms can be. Knowing rivals 2 is around the corner has me so hyped!
Goal immediately reached. Let's fucking go!
Will community workshop characters be viable to make? That's what drew me to the game in the first place. I also caution emphasizing tournament style play too heavily at the expense of a fun game, it did not work well with Blizzard.
If Rivals 2 can make it even easier to make your own character, then this will make a lot of dreams come true.
While it is possible to mod Smash Bros to do this, it is tedious, buggy, and inaccessible to most people.
Give players the dev tools to make their own platform fighter(s) within Rivals 2, and the game will never die.
In fact, the "DOTA" of platform fighters might be born this way.
Just in the first 20 seconds the gameplay looks so cool I hope many people will support it
Best part of all of this is the transparency. so many devs hide and hype, it's more than refreshing to have devs say, "this is our plan, here's why it's our plan, her's our struggle, here are the job openings if you know anybody to help us get their" good on all you
I'm definitely donating! I've been playing Rivals 1 since early access, so I'm super excited to see how Rivals 2 turns out. Thank you to Dan and everyone at Aether Studios for making great games!
As long as there is at least one character with an actionable airdash ill be pleased.
I'll definitely pay for this game and all future content. You already have a foundation with rivals for releasing on consoles so it should be less of a hurdle now. You can use one of my pieces of music if you want. I'm recording and uploading to soundcloud for them to distribute to multiple platforms for me. Learning as I go. I'm happy to see your hard work is paying off.
I hope the workshop will be booming if the game could release
The job openings unfortunately do not have very competitive pay, otherwise I’d totally be jumping on board and applying for the live service engineer slot. I have a pretty solid portfolio for that sort of role at this point.
120 thousand dollars is not competitive? Which is the posted upper limit. Jeeze what’s the going rate for that job?
I like who you are subbed to in general
The things I think is super important to making a fighting game really exceed out of the Smash Shadow that that game succeeds on so well are:
1. Unrealistic animations. Bending reality to make the game look and feel more satisfying, like ledge hangs with stretched arms and attacks with unique particle effects. Rivals 2 is already a lot of the way there, and animation is fuckin hard, so good work there.
2. A casual experience. Items, supers, RNG, and goofy stages make the game have a real FFA fun mode. Letting players have more options is never a bad idea, and the inclusion of casual elements is a big one there.
I love the game, let's hope rivals 2 lives up to the original ❤
Looks really awesome, can't wait to try it out!
I hope they bring Ori back tho
Any chance it will be on PS5?
The online play itself is going to be the icing on the cake; don't even get me started on the strawberries.
Imagine if we get a workshop in this game as well.
This looks awesome, and from a team this small? Y'all are talented! Now that the Smash hype has died down for quite a while, I hope Rivals 2 enters into the spotlight and takes it to become the new big platform fighter that everyone's siked for!
(Also... PLEASE bring back Shovel Knight and Ori if you guys still have the rights)
this game looks fantastic. the only thing being is that there will be much less custom characters because they’re now 3D models instead of 2D sprites.
But the pixel art looked so good tho 😔
