“If you want to just blast your face off with spl....... well, what are you doing?” 😂😂😂 I think that’s what a lot of people think is that good sound is loud. “A window into sound” like you said is probably what separates most of us from an audiophile. The lifelike experience is something I think most miss. Live music of any kind emotes special feelings. I think we may appreciate it a little more when this pandemic is over. To be able to have that in your home would be awesome. Nice review.
Great video! I just bought the LRS and love the clarity. I can walk away from the room and can still hear them loud and clear. Kinda like when you leave your seat at a concert. You can still hear the clarity.
Wow, I have finally encountered someone who understands how to review audio equipment on UA-cam. You said the magic words, which I will paraphrase;”how close to the speakers sound to the original sound in the space where the recording was made”. I purchased a pair of Magnpan MGIIIA speakers in December of 1987 which I owned and used until January of 2016. The last twenty years they were in my bedroom having been replaced by a par of Sound Lab Ultimate II’s in my 17 foot by 24 foot listening room. As a result of serious illness I was forced sell my house and downsize into a small apartment. I really miss the natural, neutral sound of panel speakers; both planar magnetics like the Magnepans and electrostatics like the Sound Labs. You are so right about the bass. It sounds natural. If, like me you have regular heard symphony orchestras, acoustic jazz ensembles or chamber music ensembles live you know what music sounds like. Audio is not subjective. There is a standard. You understand that. Thank you.
I had a similar thought watching this. The high fidelity part of hi-fi has gotten muddled up with subjectivist reporting and over-narrow measurement emphasis, with the hi-fi goal being mostly lost - that there is no difference between a recording/recorded performance and its reproduction. Does what your are hearing sound palpably, convincingly like you are present at that performance event. Audio has largely come untethered to this, which wasn't the case in some eras. Much of audio discussion reports what someone thinks something sounds like in formulaic fashion, not mentioning whether it actually sounds like a real event, and makes it all a matter of preference (which it ultimately has to be); if you like this kind of sound, get these, if you like that kind of sound, get those. My first "real" speakers were MG-IIBs coupled with C-J or ARC tubed gear and a nice turntable/tonearm/cartridge combo, and I've owned several Maggie models since then. I've been a fan of good panel speakers for a long time (Sound Labs? Very nice, and very large). As good as audio has gotten today, we are still a long way from ultimate transparency bringing us together with the recorded experience of an event. And even if we were there, there will always be preferences and opinion. This is why there is so much space left - and fairly - for debate, variety of gear, and continued sonic color. My own driver for my own audio avocation remains tethered to how compellingly palpable, natural, "real" a reproduced musical experience sounds, not whether I like or want booming bass, sizzling highs, to play very loud, even a big sound stage. I want all those things to sound convincingly "right".
I know this is an older video but as a owner of some older MG-3A's plus some other models including good box speakers, I haven't heard any reviewer better describe the sound nuances better than you did in this review of any Magnepan. VERY well done. From your experience and from someone who has owned several as well, I must say you have it exactly right. I hope you do more speaker reviews in the future... meaning 2022 and beyond. great, honest review, I bought a pair of1.6's about 21 yrs ago and they made me reexamine what I always thought hifi was about. Today I own 3 different pair: LRS, Gunned MMG's and a pair of MG20r.
Not too many reviews on these Maggies. Thanks! I have the LRS in my two channel system. One time I was playing random music from Tidal and I heard someone talking behind me when I was in the room alone at night. My first reaction was to stop the music and turn around to look. But there just a wall 3 feet behind me. The hair on the back of my neck stood up for a little bit until I thought: "Was it just the song?!?" I restarted the song and it was the song! Although I hate the foul language in the song, I added it to my favorite just to relive the experience of sound coming from behind me from a two channel.

In some ways, it feels analogous to the "art made for crts on modern monitors" situation, where the art used to get naturally aliased by the nature of crt but doesn't on modern monitors leading to results the artist perhaps didn't intend.

I have the MMG and blew a tweeter trying to play Too loud. I suspect a crossover is what I damaged, these are slightly brighter than the older MG11 , larger , that I also have .. there is a sweet spot that makes them really unique. They are worth the time. Set them up for 1 chair and that’s what works best because nothing can recreate sound this way.
from he manual: Your speakers come in matched pairs and are mirror-imaged. The serial number for each speaker in the pair is the same except a "1" or "2" follows each serial number. Place speaker "1" on the left and "2" on the right. This places the tweeters to the outside. Whether the tweeter is on the inside or outside, the tweeter should not be closer to the listener than the bass section. Measuring from your seated position, if the bass panel is 10 feet, 6 inches, the tweeter should be at least 10 feet, 7 inches (think in distance, not angles). In my experience they sounds better with the tweeter on the outside and as far apart as possible. Because of the bi-pole design, the amount of radiation on the first reflection point on the wall is far less than with more conventional speakers..
To quote Paul Simon, "One man's ceiling is another man's floor" Just be sure you lock down the positioning before you start drilling holes. I mounted a pair of KEF R300 speakers on arms 7ft off the floor, and 18" in front of the windows to meet a WAF requirement, using a pair of ladders to dial in the position. They were above the sight line, off the floor and sounded great - except everything sounded like the stage was above you. OK on Rock & jazz, kinda weird on classical.
If your old maggies rattle, I’m guessing you’ve trying to exceed the maximum excursion of the driver - in effect you are slapping the membrane against the magnets behind the drivers. In a conventional speaker, this would be pretty damaging. But in these shouldn’t be “at risk” in the same sort of way. Just don’t do it for too long. You might like Joppe Peelen’s UA-cam channel. He builds his own planar magnetics, and I’m fairly certain you’ll like his style too. Anyhow if you watch him, you’ll get a really good understanding of how planars work.
On the Maggie thing, my experience after living with several models for a long time, and listening to many other models (even visiting the Magnepan factory several times, and listening to Maggies set up Audio Research's factory listening room) is that they don't need massive amounts of power, but more the correct amplification. I lived a long time with MG-IIBs and 1.6QRs with 70'ish wpc tubed amps mostly from Conrad-Johnson, but also from Audio Research, and it was gorgeous. I've used them with a 35wpc Dynaco ST-70, and as good as this venerable little amplifier can be, nope, it clearly didn't work. At one point, I had four Conrad-Johnson Premier 12s plugged into each of the four panels of a pair 1.6QRs, which told me that was hyper overkill and it didn't sound better than using just two of the 140wpc monoblocks. I also used various large-power transistor amps, up to about 400wpc, which worked fine, but not better than a really nice 150wpc'ish amplifier.
You're correct , huge misconception about maggies. They are a resistive load, they really don't dip much in impedance. However amplifier choice and synergy is super important. Magnepans don't have cabinets, dipole and line source. They reveal realistically (compared to cone) what your gear is doing. Not so much watts or even current bonded either.

She is asking for ideas on using Magnepan LRS as a Mono-translucent-speaker attached to ceiling or wall. The music mainly is meant as background, atmosphere during dinners and other social gatherings…. ??
Get them as far off the wall as the design will allow. If it's less than 6", don't bother. If they are suspended from the ceiling, then the recommended 2+ feet maybe doable. My preference would be to go the ceiling route especially if they're for background (not serious) listening.
I remember listening to the Magnepans WAYYYYY back in the day. I am really stuck with headphones. Is there any headphone that has the same sound qualities?
Hey, this isn't quite your style, but I'd love to see recommendations on fun speakers for things like games / movies for computer .. stuff to replace logitech computer speakers on a medium sized desk. So fun, powered (or recommend small amp), kinda forgiving with placement, kinda small/medium size, maybe sub, or not if no need, likely with dac (maybe with headphone out) or maybe external dac/amp that can power both speakers and headphones.
Just watched a review saying they've opened up to full potential when he matched them with a McIntosh amp ... (on the Magnepan website they are also referring to monoblocks) so seems like the MG1's are still an 'easier' to drive pair :-) ,,, but yeah more affordable than a pair of vintage or new Quad electrostatics and not all that big in comparison
I have these speakers w/Hegel H160 integrated and a Sumiko S9 Sub... I love love love this setup for the $ in a smallish type room 12x13... For $650 these speakers are monsters per $. I also have the 1266 Phi TC, LCD3, LCDX, and HP3s but find myself listening to the maggies most often. I love hps but these speakers just do something for me that my hps dont.
They are power finicky and you'll have to spend 1.5 - 2.0X+ the cost of them to power correctly. The Maggies dip down to 2.8 ohms at higher frequency so they need high current/damping factor to drive them (not just pure watts). I pull mine out 36 inches from the wall when listening and it's easy enough. Finally sub integration is difficult do to the speed of the LRS. Rel (T9/i), Sumiko (S9), and Rhythmik (FM8) are all solid options to use.

I still love my Eminent Technologies LFT-III speakers, but I would snatch these up in a heartbeat. They have to be more efficient than my ETs at 83dB per Watt/meter. 😎
You have the speakers set up wrong. The tweeter stripes should be on the outside of the speaker set up. You have them on the inside so you will reduce the Soundstage effect. Thought I would let you know.
Does anyone know if a Yamaha A-S801 Integrated Amp (100 Watts into 8 Ohms, 180 into 4) would do justice to the LRS'ss? I've been wanting a pair since they came out but can't justify new electronics. Thanks!
You will do just fine. The Yamaha is a solid, if not spectacular performer into low-impedance loads. I run mine on a Marantz 7000N (80w/Ch 4 Ohms) and feel no need for more. If you want full ear-bleed concert levels, you don't want Magnepans anyway.
I place my SMGa’s and MMG’s 6’ away from the back wall. The SMGa’s are farther apart than they MMG’s. I need to hear the LRS and .7’s. I’m in “bumbfckegypt” so that’s not going to happen anytime soon unfortunately
Ive had maggies before and they actually prefer high power vs higher end lower power front end equipment. What I was asking was whether there was anything specific say sub 800 dollars that can drive these well while not being too low end in quality.
Good question, and actually not as much as you would think. The mylar diaphragms will collect some dust, but nothing like an electrostatic panel, where dust buildup is a real issue. Also depends on where you are. If you live on a farm in Kansas, yeah, dust is away of life. If you live in a wetter and greener climate, not so much.
In case anyone was wondering where these speakers come from (spoiler alert - you're gonna want them after you see this): ua-cam.com/video/HyjMuetVxJM/v-deo.html
Sensitivity pr watt has and is the weakest point for these planars. They beed to uppdate the magnet system to neodymium magnet type in a push pull config like the B.G neo 10 mid range drivers do.They are a perfect load for the amp at 94-96db pr watt 1 meter.3 B.G neo 10 pr speaker with a amt between the 1 and second B-G neo 10 active driven with a hiss "free" power amp for each section(most quiet amps when it come to noise in 40 years of hifi sickness)Magnepan is good but way to low sensitivity(had Mag 2.1 and 3.2 or 6 cant remember.Exelent sound but the system i and type drivers i use know are way better tankhs to way higher sensitivity and act like a stable resistor load to the p.amp,s higher impedance on drivers to.

I liked the emotiva PA-1 but they also did well on my Rotel RX-1052. There’s tons of amps that would work great.
Get a high current amp for Maggies. I purchased a Hagel Röst to drive my LRS. Highly recommend by Jay from The Next Best Thing Studio
Where did you purchase your sound panels
Video on it soon
Just watched a review saying they've opened up to full potential when he matched them with a McIntosh amp ... (on the Magnepan website they are also referring to monoblocks) so seems like the MG1's are still an 'easier' to drive pair :-) ,,, but yeah more affordable than a pair of vintage or new Quad electrostatics and not all that big in comparison
If you could pair this speakers with another set to fill in the audio definition which speakers would you use?
Please review Ascend Acoustics Sierra 2 ex
what are those diffusers?
Good review
I would like to ask you what is that black shapes on the wall ?
Does it has a specific name?
Does it affect the sound ?
Video on them soon!
Maggie's vs Vandy's?
What model Vandy's do you have?
Those diffusers are sick!. What's their name?
Any plan on reviewing the MH751?
Very interested in these. Price is right. Would they be ok in a large room with ceiling room?
I think they would do even better in a big space. They’re not insanely loud, but the staging scales with the room really well.
If the detail better on the LCD X?
What are the soundproof panels on the back wall @1:09 ?? And where can I get them?
Video comin on that
@@DMS3TV Cool thanks!
What's the name of the first song?
would you rather listen to this or a klipsch rpm600 or some keff for 700 dollars like this speakers?
Le t me guess u have klipsch rpm600’s ??
@@xprettylightsx nah, that was the first that came in my mind for 600usd straight..and dms said they are around 700dollars so i wanted to know..because everybody is praising the klipsch.

Magnepan for sure, but that’s my personal preference.
I still love my Eminent Technologies LFT-III speakers, but I would snatch these up in a heartbeat. They have to be more efficient than my ETs at 83dB per Watt/meter. 😎
Fantastic review amigo!
Ron, The brother needs the beast, if you still have your Carver knocking around
please review more about speakers
You have the speakers set up wrong. The tweeter stripes should be on the outside of the speaker set up. You have them on the inside so you will reduce the Soundstage effect. Thought I would let you know.
I tried them both ways and enjoyed them both ways. The user manual recommends them the way they’re setup in this video.
Or just move them 18 inches farther apart
Anyone know if an Outlaw 5000 amp would work with these?
Are those acoustic panels in the background expensive? Could you share a link for them please
Video on them soon
@@DMS3TV Thank you for the reply good sir. Will wait for the video!
Mid focussed neutral eh?!
Does anyone know if a Yamaha A-S801 Integrated Amp (100 Watts into 8 Ohms, 180 into 4) would do justice to the LRS'ss? I've been wanting a pair since they came out but can't justify new electronics. Thanks!
Probably not. You’re better with outlaw audio
Whats the cheapest powerful amp you would recommend with these?
Ive had maggies before and they actually prefer high power vs higher end lower power front end equipment. What I was asking was whether there was anything specific say sub 800 dollars that can drive these well while not being too low end in quality.
Emotiva PA-1 monoblocks
top review, top everything DMS! Maybe one day when I actually have enough room, I'll get a set of magnapans...
You who else really likes them?
Cats :|
How did the Rotel do with the Maggies?
just checked and lead tie is 4 months!
Well put.
Are these speakers sensitive to dust?
Good question, and actually not as much as you would think. The mylar diaphragms will collect some dust, but nothing like an electrostatic panel, where dust buildup is a real issue. Also depends on where you are. If you live on a farm in Kansas, yeah, dust is away of life. If you live in a wetter and greener climate, not so much.
@@panzrwagn thank you
Off topic, but can we get a link for the black 3d wall panels you use in the background, love the look.
Video on that soon
I thought that these where Ribbon speakers, not Planar
Quasi-ribbon-planar is what they say
Could you pls include sound demos in your future reviews pls, thanks
In case anyone was wondering where these speakers come from (spoiler alert - you're gonna want them after you see this):

Open baffle ear lobes, aircore induction ear lobe
@@EnpuerKT And they're ported!
600-700$ is actually incredibly cheap for Magnepans
i know you said youd fix it, but its been a couple of videos now so, 18:9 pls DMS
Soooooon. My computer is dying and won’t render 18:9 and I don’t wanna buy a new one.
Only Americans can afford the LRS. When buying in the EU the price of the LRS will be around 1700 euro.
Oof
@@DMS3TV
That's why I bought Magnepans secondhand. 550 euro and 400 kilometer ride
I got my LRS for £1000 from a UK dealer. I think they are branded Magneplannar rather than Magnepan on there website.
@@shahidyt
You are right 995 British pounds.
With the Brexshit it is 1097 euro. Of course without the costs of shipping, import and tax

There's a 12 week wait for them.
the flat-screen of speakers, basically. xD
but now i can't afford the amplification lol
Dude looks like Eddie Redmayne
Can you make clothes with just your logo?
Yup! I’ll update the store this week
This channel still exists? weird, I thought he was absorbed into Zios' belly
Americans can't afford not to buy magnapan
