I did the same upgrade a few weeks ago to a Lenovo M71 Edge SFF (I found one in the trash at work without RAM or HDD) Replaced the Pentium G-630 with an i5-2400, put in 8 gigs RAM, a 2 TB HDD and the Gigabyte GT 1030 LP passive cooled. (I was considering a GTX1050 LP, but since this little PC only has a 170W PSU, I choose not to push it) This thing can now play every game, and draws about 100W from the wall when pushed at gaming. The GT 1030 is an awesome card that can be used even in SFF and passive cooled. (even passive cooled, I have a push it really hard/long to hit 70 C) Good video.... Nice to know that a little OC can give this little card up to 15% more performance. At that speed it will be in the GTX 750 Ti performance area - at less than half the power!
Just bought a GT 1030 for my budget gaming PC build. Gonna do a 10-15% overclock on it to play some games I love to play like Borderlands. Now I see the great performance the GT 1030 has and I can't wait till I get mine in the mail
I still have to this day and it's an advantage that it is a card that has a very low wattage and a decent temps while gaming so it's not hard to cool down especially when you have a decent cooling system.

Some nice overall % returns for, what was it, 15% core and 20% RAM in the end - the two separate ones stable together (sometimes that may need a touch back from what they were individually). More telling though, would be if it had a similar or greater effect on the lows. What would it offer in the supplied "OC profile"?
Thank you for this video! I had been putting off buying a video card due to the rise in prices, but this a pleasant surprise at a good price point...The GTX 1050 Ti I purchased a few years ago for my Son's build cannot be found below double the price I paid then!!!
I just bought this card for my HP SFF machine, unfortunately I just learned that it didn't support Windows Vista, I had to re-install the machine, upgrade it to Windows 7, after that it performed much better than previous display cards. Before GT1030 I used ATI Radeon HD 2900XT/5450 to play Far Cry, they both couldn't run it smoothly, but now it improved significantly with GT1030, I'm planning to install Crysis later.
I got a gt710 for 15$, it was actually cheaper than a vga to hdmi converter cable, and since no longer using integrated graphics it freed up some system ram on my 1 stick only mobo.

@PhilsComputerLab How were the temps? Just wondering if the chips were just maxed, or if a custom heat sink would help(ridiculous idea I know). However, with graphics cards being in such short supply. People will find other solutions.
I do also love this card a lot to be honest. I am a huge fan of mini-cases and ehm.. Well I got two systems where I did put a 1030 in it because it literally is the fastest (affordable) single slot low profile card out there. (I know there are like WX 4100 and P1000 which are around 1050 performance-and I also have them as well- but then having high temperatures in a small case it is still better to have the 1030 for gaming than such high priced cards). For me, it is really a nice card to the price and I am not sure if I should try to overclock mine because she sometimes also does reach 82 degrees already... what would you think? Should I give it a try?
In my experience, the lower spec nVIDIAs can be pushed pretty well with overclock, I had a 1050-Ti which is the next step up from this one and it was perfectly happy with 30% on the memory and 25% on the CPU before it started misbehaving. By the way, the RX550 was a very similar price to the 1030 and offered slightly better performance and was also quite amenable to overclocking. Both cards may be bottom of the barrel, but they actually give quite respectable performance in 1080p if you lower the settings. My 980-Ti? Even 5% causes it to get unstable, I really lost the silicon lottery with that card!

I think he was talking about the resolution of the video; for some reason only 1440p60, 1080p60 and 720p60 were available when it was just up, whilst normally it goes from lowest > highest. Really weird, how UA-cam renders and uploads these videos sometimes.
+Michiel van der Winden Ah that's what he meant! Yes I only uploaded it today. The resolutions should be available now from 144p to 1440p for best quality :D
+PhilsComputerLab. Ok, I was referring to this youtube video, however coming back to write this reply, I find the resolution settings have returned back to normal. BTW I enjoyed watching your GT1030 review. I prefer the silent edition.
@@philscomputerlabAllright, Thanks a lot for the reply. I still have my old rusted GT 430 in storage, I cant believe how far these little GPU's have gone since then...
64 bits interface really loves memory overclocks, with higher memory interface maybe you dont get such good results, i remeber this from when i overclocked my first video card, a radeon 9600 se. Also very good video Phill, simple yet very informative.
I have the same pc. Hp elite 8300 SF with core i5 3470, 12GB RAM, 1TB WD Blue and the exact same GT 1030(GIGABYTE). I have never overclocked my GPU but I have noticed games like Titanfall 2 and Mass effect Andromeda not running properly in windows 10 and was unplayable. However when I switched back to windows 7 I could play them on high settings without any problem. I think you might get a few more fps with this setup if you use windows 7 in it.
+Seatux So I had a look at quite a few benchmarks, and the GT 1030 is basically as fast as the regular GTX 750. The GTX 750 Ti is faster, but the GT 1030 consumes less than half the power and has a more modern chip. Also it has HDMI 2.0, which is good for media or a HTPC machine.
Don't forget GTX series GPUs have shadowplay if you want to record your desktop or gameplay without any performance hit so if you went with a GTX 750ti that would be a bonus too.
I can't get my fan to work on mine does anyone have any solutions? oh and my pc isn't the one where u can install a disc for this stuff. Oh wait how do I install that thing where u controlled the fan speed?
I think the optimal Overclock is about: CoreClock +165 and MemoryClock +340. CoreClock doesnt need to be higher as +180, instead increase MemoryClock, which actually increases fps more effectively.
Probably a silly question but i can't seem to find an answer. Do you only have the fan set to 100% whilst testing and then resort to auto for when you regularly play? Or always leave that custom profile at 100% fan speed?
Why not chose the 1050 Ti? Seventy-five max watt usage. It has a 128 bit memory interface. It would probably scale nicely with the i5 2400. ELSA has a single-slot low profile version but it appears to only be in the Japanese market www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B06VVGDCF8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1493676844&sr=8-2&keywords=elsa+nvidia+1050. Seeing as how you are in Australia it might not be a feat for you to obtain one.
+ILC ILC Now that's a cool looking graphics card! The way I see it, if you can afford the GTX 1050 Ti, absolutely go for it. Over here in Australia it's a bit over twice the cost of the GT 1030, but also performs accordingly.
For these HP small form factor office PC's the GTX 1050 Ti might not work at all, since the PCI-e slot in these machines typically cannot deliver the 75 watts of power needed to drive such a GPU. The GT 1030 is a safer choice as it requires only 30 watts to function, which these PC's can easily deliver.
HP sff likely not run over 35w cards, my Lenovo does- so might some Dells. My Lenovo will run a 1050ti, but not in the sff case- if I change that I might as well get a 1060 and a normal size psu.
I recommend you also check out the AMD RX 560. They run around 110 USD and handle right around everything I've thrown at it. They also really benefit from a memory overclock, as they're fairly bandwidth limited in most games.
+Fuima Tatsu Yea that could be interesting, but I don't think that card fits into a Small Form Factor machine and it likely pulls more power, and these machines do not have PCIe power connectors.
PhilsComputerLab that's a pretty good point. Powercolor makes an RX 560 without a power connector, but it's still not SFF and I don't personally trust the slot to provide 70+ watts.
I could OC memory to +920MHz which is almost 25% on MSI afterburner with a total of 7900+ MHz. With +1000 (max) starts artifacting. And core to +220, +240 is unstable
Assuming there's still some thermal headroom left, have you considered modifying the BIOS to increase the voltage and see if you can push the GPU clock any further?
A lot of mobo's in sff systems will limit pci-e power to 30-35 watts, which is about what I measured this card, so even if card will do it, mobo may not allow it.
Back in the day the GT 730 was a great OCing card, it sucked ass regularly however if you slapped a decent OC on the memory and pushed the core clock a bit you could get decent performance from the card (given the price and time of release)
i have a gt 710 2gb overclocked it in my pc running intel core 2 quad q6600 6gb ddr2 ram 1tbhdd windows 7 before overclock games like gta iv running at 1360x768 gave me 10-32fps average 15fps once overclocked i now get 48-60fps average 50fps gta v 1360x768 before overclock 5-12fps average 10 once overclocked 25-38fps average 30fps overclocking really does improve my card
yeah if price is factor i cant understand why people would overlook this card i own a 1050 and 1030; surprisingly the 1030 can handle practically anything at 720p high settings on an OC. Would recommend for a tight budget
Hello Phil! I read that card runs in x4 pci-express mode. What do you think, how much bottleneck can a pci-express 1.1 slot make for this card in x4 mode?
Very simple. Put it on an old Core 2 config, and run gpu limited benchmarks. :) Maybe i will buy a GT 1030 with Q9400@3Ghz, but this fact confuses me a little bit, because my board's slot is only 1.1. Now i'm using a GTX 650, and the 1030 seems to be an ideal choice for me.
How much headroom do you have in a card that only draws from the PCI express slot? I have a 1050 ti but it's an EVGA SSC (2nd out of 4 on the factory over clock scale) so I always felt there was no need.
I was a bit confused over this: Irrespective of how strong your psu is, the Gfx card will still crash if it's pushed too much. Is this how it actually is or can it be pushed further depending on the psu?
Bought it fairly recently on sale. Mainly for benchmarking, but I enjoyed the story aswell. And yes, don't try it on a single core. It just glitches out. A Pentium 4 with HT on the other hand can run it.
64 bit i play gta 5 with procesor intel i3 4160 8 ram ddr 3 and 1030 2gb gddr 5 i play gta on 1440 resolution and all hight an ultra only msaa or fxaa is off
There is no worries. I have exactly the same card. And gta 5 running butter smooth on medium/high settings without overclock and i use redux and mvga graphics mod also on gta 5 with this card ;)
From my limited experience with those low profile office workstation cases, they have poor heat dissipation. running a discrete gpu (especially an overclooked one) in constant load can make the gpu and the rest of the machine wear out pretty fast. I wouldn't recommend using a setup like this to game regularly.
I have PCs with 1070s and 1050Tis, however, I'd also like to try running external graphics cards with my trusty old T400 and T420 Thinkpads. You think the 1030 would be a good choice for those?

the game is Dirt i think. Dirt 3
Great info, thank you. Is this the DDR4 or DDR5 video card?
This one has GDDR5.
@@philscomputerlabAllright, Thanks a lot for the reply. I still have my old rusted GT 430 in storage, I cant believe how far these little GPU's have gone since then...
*outro song?* great video as usual Phil, keep it up
gt 1030 is actually kind of a beast for budget gaming
Probably not worth it now, but it still good
@@bombos4870 honestly if you buy it second hand in working condition, you could pick one up for $30-$50
It's actually really good, there is like 3-4 fps between it and the 750 ti.
@@xen6604 exactly, great for gamers on a budget *:D*
How to overclock RAM?Can you please make a separate video on it?
64 bits interface really loves memory overclocks, with higher memory interface maybe you dont get such good results, i remeber this from when i overclocked my first video card, a radeon 9600 se.
Also very good video Phill, simple yet very informative.
it gave me 30 fps more on DOOM eternal :D
I have the same pc. Hp elite 8300 SF with core i5 3470, 12GB RAM, 1TB WD Blue and the exact same GT 1030(GIGABYTE). I have never overclocked my GPU but I have noticed games like Titanfall 2 and Mass effect Andromeda not running properly in windows 10 and was unplayable. However when I switched back to windows 7 I could play them on high settings without any problem. I think you might get a few more fps with this setup if you use windows 7 in it.
I am finding this card and new old stock 750Tis at around the same price where I am at. So go for the 1030 or the 750ti?
1050 is miles ahead better than the 750ti
Sorry, mistyped there. I meant this 1030 card and the 750ti.
1030 is more modern, more efficient and uses less power. The 750 Ti is a bit more powerful and has XP drivers.
Is this even worth it with the fan on 100% just for 6 fps...
What did you use to overclock it.
Yes it was to test overclocking. Good cooling helps with that.
+LC ILC But I think this card isn't low profile?
For these HP small form factor office PC's the GTX 1050 Ti might not work at all, since the PCI-e slot in these machines typically cannot deliver the 75 watts of power needed to drive such a GPU. The GT 1030 is a safer choice as it requires only 30 watts to function, which these PC's can easily deliver.
HP sff likely not run over 35w cards, my Lenovo does- so might some Dells. My Lenovo will run a 1050ti, but not in the sff case- if I change that I might as well get a 1060 and a normal size psu.
Really liked the video :) it's nice to see budget cards performing well.
What song did you use at the end of the video?
Overclocked my Zotac 1030 with MSI afterburner +205 CPU and +602 memory, now have 60fps average in FH4 low settings (had between 25-32)
I use +175mhz core clock and +680 memory clock.
I stick around for the music at the end...LOL.
Nice :)
Thank you!
Back in the day the GT 730 was a great OCing card, it sucked ass regularly however if you slapped a decent OC on the memory and pushed the core clock a bit you could get decent performance from the card (given the price and time of release)
i have a gt 710 2gb overclocked it in my pc running
intel core 2 quad q6600
6gb ddr2 ram
1tbhdd
windows 7
before overclock games like gta iv running at 1360x768 gave me 10-32fps average 15fps
once overclocked i now get 48-60fps average 50fps
gta v 1360x768
before overclock 5-12fps average 10
once overclocked 25-38fps average 30fps
overclocking really does improve my card
What size power supply are you running? I've heard of people claiming that they run it on a stock sub 300 watt ps.
working on a 255w psu
yeah if price is factor i cant understand why people would overlook this card
i own a 1050 and 1030; surprisingly the 1030 can handle practically anything at 720p high settings on an OC. Would recommend for a tight budget
My default is only running 2100 memory is mine broken? Mine didn’t start at 6000
sounds like you bought the gddr3 version of the card. you will get half the performance of the gddr5 version.
Hello Phil!
I read that card runs in x4 pci-express mode. What do you think, how much bottleneck can a pci-express 1.1 slot make for this card in x4 mode?
+Breakbeat0420 You're right, I didn't realise that, but GPU-Z configms this. Now that's a very good question and I wonder how we could test this?
Very simple. Put it on an old Core 2 config, and run gpu limited benchmarks. :)
Maybe i will buy a GT 1030 with Q9400@3Ghz, but this fact confuses me a little bit, because my board's slot is only 1.1.
I was a bit confused over this:
Irrespective of how strong your psu is, the Gfx card will still crash if it's pushed too much. Is this how it actually is or can it be pushed further depending on the psu?
Please try GTA 5 on this PC
+64 bit Would love to do that, but I don't have that game and it's too expensive to buy just for benchmarking. But I'm sure it will run well.
Well you could pirate it. No one would give a fuck, to be honest.
Is this warming while you are overclocking ?
very well done! thank you.
Hey bro, the last week i buy a GT 1030 OC model, these card have Over Clock settings or i need put the sittings?
Great Video Bro ! THX
From my limited experience with those low profile office workstation cases, they have poor heat dissipation. running a discrete gpu (especially an overclooked one) in constant load can make the gpu and the rest of the machine wear out pretty fast. I wouldn't recommend using a setup like this to game regularly.
It's really odd but I managed to get my GT 1030 to 2Ghz with no game crashes/artifacting. Pretty impressive if you ask me!
1030 DDR4 ?
@@PILOTOSPURASANGRE13 No, it was the Gddr5 version
im gonna try to get the evga 1030 SC just cause i love its shroud design
what is the name of the software u used for overclocking GPU??? PLS REPLY
Did you have to change anything in the BIOS?
Running a ryzen 3 1200 and a Gt 1030 until i have money to upgrade further. How do you think this would work?
I have PCs with 1070s and 1050Tis, however, I'd also like to try running external graphics cards with my trusty old T400 and T420 Thinkpads.
You think the 1030 would be a good choice for those?
It should work, yes!
Awesome! Might give it a try then.
Where did you get the overclocking software?
Do the Zotac 1030 also has an OC mode? Please Reply.
Thats pretty impressive results for a lower end card :)
If the GT 1030 had a 128 bit bus, I'm pretty sure it's gonna go neck and neck with the GTX 750 Ti.
how did you overlocked that much your memory clock i couldnt go more than 450+ 420+ mermoy clock
