    It's quite nice that the GT1030 can Overclock even in an SFF PC... Really goes to show how efficient Pascal is as an architecture.

      I'm not sure about OC vs self boosting. I set the slider to lowest speed and it says 1322mhz but runs at 1582mhz. Max speed is 1688mhz but runs at 1948mhz, maybe its because it is running over 20c cooler than it expects?

    Maybe on US market gt 1030 doesn't make sense considering that gtx 1050 costs 114 dollars which is better value than gt 1030. In my country, the cheapest Gtx 1050(non ti) goes for around 135 dollars which is quite expensive. Gt 1030 can be found at around 72 dollars. I just bought this card for my HP SFF machine, unfortunately I just learned that it didn't support Windows Vista, I had to re-install the machine, upgrade it to Windows 7, after that it performed much better than previous display cards. Before GT1030 I used ATI Radeon HD 2900XT/5450 to play Far Cry, they both couldn't run it smoothly, but now it improved significantly with GT1030, I'm planning to install Crysis later.

    I did the same upgrade a few weeks ago to a Lenovo M71 Edge SFF (I found one in the trash at work without RAM or HDD)
    Replaced the Pentium G-630 with an i5-2400, put in 8 gigs RAM, a 2 TB HDD and the Gigabyte GT 1030 LP passive cooled. (I was considering a GTX1050 LP, but since this little PC only has a 170W PSU, I choose not to push it) This thing can now play every game, and draws about 100W from the wall when pushed at gaming. The GT 1030 is an awesome card that can be used even in SFF and passive cooled. (even passive cooled, I have a push it really hard/long to hit 70 C)
    Good video.... Nice to know that a little OC can give this little card up to 15% more performance. At that speed it will be in the GTX 750 Ti performance area - at less than half the power!

    In my experience, the lower spec nVIDIAs can be pushed pretty well with overclock, I had a 1050-Ti which is the next step up from this one and it was perfectly happy with 30% on the memory and 25% on the CPU before it started misbehaving. By the way, the RX550 was a very similar price to the 1030 and offered slightly better performance and was also quite amenable to overclocking. Both cards may be bottom of the barrel, but they actually give quite respectable performance in 1080p if you lower the settings. My 980-Ti? Even 5% causes it to get unstable, I really lost the silicon lottery with that card!

    From my limited experience with those low profile office workstation cases, they have poor heat dissipation. running a discrete gpu (especially an overclooked one) in constant load can make the gpu and the rest of the machine wear out pretty fast. I wouldn't recommend using a setup like this to game regularly.

      I think he was talking about the resolution of the video; for some reason only 1440p60, 1080p60 and 720p60 were available when it was just up, whilst normally it goes from lowest > highest. Really weird, how UA-cam renders and uploads these videos sometimes.

    Can you give an update on the status of your 1030 today in 2021? I also got a brand new 1030 more than 3 weeks ago and I'm quite concerned about its longevity in overclock. Hope you can respond 😢

    Hello Phil, you could upgrade the PSU and then you can use "whatever" GPU you want. Of course this is easier with the tower HP 8200 elite PCs.

    Really should just overclock the wallet, the price/perf gain going from the 1030 to the 1050 is 50% cost vs 100% performance gain or 1:2 ratio. You don't get those sorts of cost:perf gains going up from there.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 років тому

      +magottyk I looked into this. Here in Australia I can get the low profile versions of the GT 1030 for AUD 111 and the GTX 1050 Ti for AUD 230. If you got the money, of course go with the GTX 1050 Ti. As for the regular GTX 1050, I can't recommend it as it is faster, but only has 2GB of VRAM which is not enough IMO for a card of that calibre. But what do you think?

    • @johnbrowne3964
      @johnbrowne3964 6 років тому

      Sorry to be all over this page, but some say the number of gpu cores is more important than the vram size, you can always turn down some things to lower ram usage, but if not enough gpu power that won't help. This is a budget card, so likely using it with budget system overall- so with 1366x768 tv (not monitor) the 1030 will run games at screen native rez and look good. 1050 extra cost difference could go to ram or some other lacking feature of the pc. If pc only had say a 2 core cpu, and 4gb ram would you still get a 1050 over a 1030?

    • @magottyk
      @magottyk 6 років тому

      A 1050 will allow you to run decent frame rates with medium textures and for most games you won't need any more than that, there are 4GB versions of the 1050 and the RX560 which is an equivalent card but you are adding cost for that extra memory, which is debatable that you would need it given that it only allows you to run high textures in some games that would exceed the 2GB needed for medium textures. I can still run high texture detail with many games with just 2GB, but not all especially some of the newest titles, but only some will exceed the 2GB budget with high texture settings.
      In terms of cost, here in Aus you can get a RX560 pulse card 2GB for $149 and the 4GB version for $189 right now. while a 1050 2GB version starts from $165 ( no 4GB cards listed). Given the starting price of the GT1030 (in stock now) is AU$99, we can see that the options here in Aus do follow the 1:2 price/perf ratio if you aren't too picky on the card you buy. Price reference from MWAVE.
      But here's the interesting bit that many of your viewers might be interested in and that is the 1030 vs the R7 260X. The R7 260x is freesync compatible, can be gotten on ebay for $30-$60 and has a performance ratio to the 1030 of 1:1.7 or about 70% more performance. The R7 260X being 2nd gen GCN has a lot of the features of the modern GCN 4.0 chips and is a great choice if you aren't too worried about power budgets as they usually require a 6 pin power connector. Now if freesync isn't required then for the same money the R7 7850 can be acquired which has the performance very close to the RX 560 but with a power draw penalty.
      I'm running the R7 260X in crossfire atm and in games like prey and shadows of Mordor, you can definitely see the frame time improvements and the setup allows me to run medium settings at 1440p and get between 40-60 fps with freesync turned on. Games like Doom run at ~30fps (no crossfire) at medium settings at 1440p on these cards so at 1080p they will perform good enough. For $60 I got the ASUS cu2 OC version which runs happily alongside my Gigabyte Windforce OC card I had originally purchased years ago.
      But for those seeking to keep the power budget limited to the PCIe slot then the Galax GTX 1050 @$165 is really hard to beat for price/perf and perf/watt or the Galax pulse RX 560 which claims 45Watts power draw @$149 but is slightly lower performance than the 1050 but fits neatly into the price/perf comparisons.

      _" If pc only had say a 2 core cpu, and 4gb ram would you still get a 1050 over a 1030?"_
      Really depends on the CPU you are talking about but even an AMD APU running 2 cores (1 module) can take advantage of the extra graphics capability of the 1050, but not as well as say an entry level modern pentium chip will.

    I recommend you also check out the AMD RX 560. They run around 110 USD and handle right around everything I've thrown at it. They also really benefit from a memory overclock, as they're fairly bandwidth limited in most games.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 років тому

      +Fuima Tatsu Yea that could be interesting, but I don't think that card fits into a Small Form Factor machine and it likely pulls more power, and these machines do not have PCIe power connectors.

      PhilsComputerLab that's a pretty good point. Powercolor makes an RX 560 without a power connector, but it's still not SFF and I don't personally trust the slot to provide 70+ watts.

    Hi Phil, I have an ASUS gt 1030 no fan version- that I got for 56$. I compared Unigine Heaven/Valley benchmarks at the slowest gpu/vram speed and fastest speed. I got 36.1 fps and 1510 score at 1582 mhz gpu/4808mhz vram in Valley bench that increased to 48.8 fps and 2041 score at 1948 mhz gpu/7208mhz vram. Heaven bench went from 22.4fps and 564 score to 29.5fps and 743 score at the same min/max speeds. So 1/3 increase in performance for about 23% gpu and 50% vram increase in clocks. Temps go to 70c or so, I added a 60mm fan- now maxes at 50c and boost will run higher and longer- at the speeds listed above.

    If they had more Ram in that GT1030 it would perform much better.
    I will really want a new GTX1030TI with 8GB of faster Ram and higher clocks, also a better heatsink, something more quiet, fanless with vaporchamber heatsink, and a backplate, with built in memory, this card is amazing.
    All they needed to do is had added a few more cuda cores, a little higher frequency and more ram and faster ram memory, I like to see it with an M.2 slot in the back, so it can use it for the drives and as cache for video games and that way be faster

    I do also love this card a lot to be honest. I am a huge fan of mini-cases and ehm.. Well I got two systems where I did put a 1030 in it because it literally is the fastest (affordable) single slot low profile card out there. (I know there are like WX 4100 and P1000 which are around 1050 performance-and I also have them as well- but then having high temperatures in a small case it is still better to have the 1030 for gaming than such high priced cards). For me, it is really a nice card to the price and I am not sure if I should try to overclock mine because she sometimes also does reach 82 degrees already... what would you think? Should I give it a try?
